AROUND TOWN
AlfamaOnce the Moorish and Jewish quarter, this quaint medieval neighborhood is the second oldest in Europe. It is considered by many to be the true soul of the city with its clothes lines and exquisite old buildings and tiles. Perfect for wandering around without a map and catching glimpses of the river around every corner. Be prepared to discover the sounds and aromas of the city as you are likely to hear Fado and smell grilled sardines every step of the way.
Lift and Miradouro of Santa JustaBuilt by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, the lift opened in 1902 and has been taking people from Baixa to Bairro Alto ever since. Take a break at the café on top and enjoy the fantastic view of the city centre, especially at night.
Bairro Alto Bairro Alto is a mix of the old and new hipster Lisbon. During the day, “Bairro”, as it is known by locals, is a relatively quiet place perfect for vintage and antique shopping. It comes to life at night when restaurants and bars welcome all types of crowds that fill the streets, glass in hand.
BelémBelém is home to some of the most famous monuments in Lisbon. From Padrão dos Descobrimentos to the Tower of Belém, the portuguese discoveries are in the centre of this part of town. Imposing its presence in Belém, is the Jerónimos Monastery, the ultimate example of Manueline style, an architectural style that incorporates maritime elements and representations of the discoveries with aspects of Late Gothic architecture.
Belém is also home to the world renown Pastéis de Belém, traditional custard tarts that have conquered people around the globe. Decorated with white and blue tiles, these large tea rooms are a major tourist attraction and while it might take a while to get a table, it is definitely worth the wait!
Castelo de São JorgeThis medieval castle is a must see. Go up by taking the 28 tram and enjoy the old town on the way up. When there, go up the watch towers and enjoy the amazing views of the city, the bridge and the river. For the full royal experience order a glass of wine and enjoy the beautiful sunset.
