Introduction This book is about Helen Keller and many other things about her. Helen Keller made life better for blind and deaf people. She gave speeches to 

prove that blind and deaf peoples’ lives could be better. 

Who is Helen Keller?  Helen Keller was a famous and special person. She was a blind and deaf person. Helen had a hard, crazy, and difficult life. 

She used her hands to see and hear! The machines that blind people use today were thanks to her. 

Let’s learn about Helen’s childhood!   Helen was born on June 27, 1880. Her parents’ names were Kate Adams Keller and Captain Arthur Keller. She was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Helen and herparents lived in a small house in  Tuscumbia, Alabama. She also had a little sister named Eve.  

A Tragic Illness! Helen was only 19 months when she got sick with a disease called meningitis. Her illness stayed in her for about four weeks! When she was only a year old her illness went away. Helen’s illness caused her to become blind and deaf. 

 

Oh no! Mayhem is here!   After she became blind and deaf, Helen started to become wild. Mayhem took over her! Helen started to hit and smash things. She did lots of times knocked down her little sister’s, Eve’s cradle. She caused trouble all around the house. She usually broke glass objects because she had a dainty house. She did all this because she couldn’t see nor hear.  

A Very Helpful Teacher Helen was sent to Washington D.C. to see Alexander Graham Bell, a teacher for the deaf. His mother and wife were deaf so knew how to take care of the deaf, what the deaf wanted, and what could caused the disease. He told her parents to send a letter for a teacher from The Perkins School For The Blind.  

 

Anne Sullivan Helen’s parents did just what the teacher said. They sent a letter to The Perkins School For The Blind. They responded. They said they would send the teacher on March 3, 1885. So, on March 3, 1885, the teacher came. Her name was Anne Manfield Sullivan. When she was coming, Helen felt footsteps on the stairs. She thought it was her mother. Then she reached out her hand. Someone took her by the hand pulled her close. When she knew it wasn’t her mother, she pulled away. Sometimes Helen called this the birthday of her soul.  

A Miracale, A Miracale! Anne gave Helen a doll. Then she spelled D‐O‐L‐L in the palm of Helen’s hand. But Helen didn’t understand what the word meant. Then Anne and Helen went to the garden. Anne poured water on Helen’s hand. Then she spelled W‐A‐T‐E‐R in the palm of Helen’s hand. Then Helen understood! W‐A‐T‐E‐R was something very cool running on her hand! Helen then knew 30 words by the end of the day!  

Helen learns Braille and to speak! Helen learned to speak and read Braille when she was only 13. She learned at the Perkins for the Blind. On June 28, 1904, she was the first blind and deaf person to get a college degree. In 1902 she 

finished and published the book The Story Of My Life. 

  

Helen gets on famous! Helen became very famous. She made big speeches and Anne Sullivan translated every word and sentence. Helen did these speeches to prove blind and deaf people’s will be better someday.   

A Terrifying Ending! Helen and Anne still went on many tours. On May 24 Anne Sullivan died. Then Helen wrote a book about her best friend, Anne Sullivan. Then Helen became sick. She stopped her tours. She then died on July 26.
