Ohio grocery chain turns to Symphony EYC for inventory management and replenishment solutions

Heinen’s Fine Foods is a third-generation, family-owned grocery chain with 17 neighborhood stores serving communities throughout Northeast Ohio. Specializing in providing the highest quality foods, the company recently opened a new store in the Chicago area. CHALLENGE

When Maryann Correnti came to Heinen’s as CFO, there was no integrated inventory management system. Correnti’s greatest frustration was her inability to give her executives up-to-date information on operations.

“For us it was very frustrating because we thought something was in the warehouse or had been ordered. We’d walk through the stores and see empty shelves,” said Correnti. “Consequently, one of my first strategic goals was to put in an inventory management system.”

SOLUTION

As part of its inventory management strategy, Heinen’s selected Symphony EYC G.O.L.D. to manage its end-to-end supply chain. The overall objective was to create “one single version of the truth” for all inventory management data by integrating more efficient functions throughout the supply chain.

Symphony EYC G.O.L.D. (Global Optimized Logistics and Distribution) offers a number of modules that can be implemented individually or as a complete solution. Over time, Heinen’s has implemented a significant portion of the of the Symphony EYC G.O.L.D. platform, including:

• Master Data Management • WMS• Merchandising and Pricing • Store Replenishment• Order Management • Direct Store Delivery • Inventory Management

Together, these modules have helped Heinen’s to ensure better accuracy and control over the assortment of DSD Products in all of its grocery stores. As best practices for their business processes, these solutions incorporate innovations around customer insight and analytics that easily transform customer demand into profitable decisions.

In addition to helping Heinen’s clean up its business processes, this initial Symphony EYC implementation provided the grocery retailer with the technologies and tools needed to improve fill rate performance on both advertised items and everyday ones. With the ability to order more appropriately and keep shelves stocked, Heinen’s product availability significantly increased and so did customer satisfaction scores.

The final step in Heinen’s Symphony EYC G.O.L.D. implementation was to improve replenishment functions. In order to extend these functions beyond initial merchandise, inventory management and warehouse management, Heinen’s added G.O.L.D. Demand Forecasting and G.O.L.D. Warehouse Replenishment Optimization. These new modules better support the forecasting and replenishment workload by optimizing inventory availability via replenishment strategies. And improve execution based on forecasted channel, customer and promotional demand.

Since rolling the new replenishment modules out to its first warehouse in October, Heinen’s has experienced significant on-hand inventory reduction based on an accurate forecast for holiday, as well as promotional demand and operational efficiency through-out their retail operations.

BENEFITS

• On-hand inventory reduction • Greater efficiency • Better product availability • Improved business processes • Faster planogram creation • Improved category optimization • Lower Inventory • Elimination of Over Stocks • Fewer Man Hours
