The work described herein was performed in accordance with our work plan dated January 25, 2007 1 , which was approved by the Sites Management Section (SMS) via a letter dated February 27, 2007 2 . The investigation included assessing subsurface conditions associated with the former 10,000-gallon diesel fuel underground storage tank (UST), former drum storage at the automotive garage area, and former drum storage adjacent to the quarry. Maps showing the site location and applicable site features are included in the Attachment, Pages 1 – 2. FORMER 10,000-GALLON UST AREA On June 27, 2007, H&N field staff oversaw the excavation of a test pit (Test Pit #1) in the area of the former 10,000-gallon UST, which was located immediately east of the former main building, which was destroyed by fire. Green Mountain Mulch (GMM) provided the excavator and operator for this effort. During the excavation, soils were screened continuously from 0 to 11 ft below ground surface (bgs) for the possible presence of contamination. This included a visual and olfactory assessment to identify any staining, discoloration and/or odors and a Photoionization Detector equipped with a 10.2 eV lamp (PID) was used to measure Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). In addition, PID levels were all background (0 ppm). To confirm the absence of contamination from field -screening, a composite soil sample was collected from the excavated soils and delivered to Endyne, Inc., an environmental laboratory of Williston, VT (Endyne) for analysis of VOCs via EPA Method 8260. Laboratory results are included in the Attachment, Pages 3 – 6. Based on the laboratory results, no VOCs were detected above laboratory limits (ND). However, several Unidentified Peaks (UIPs >10) were detected and matched via library records as Alkylated Benzenes and Alkylated PAHs. As the main building was destroyed by fire, it is likely these detections are resultant of un-combusted material fallout from the fire. FORMER DRUM STORAGE – AUTOMOTIVE GARAGE AREA H&N field staff also oversaw the excavation of 5 test pits (Test Pits #2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) in the automotive garage area, which was formerly used to store used motor oil in 55-gallon drums. This area is located in the northeast portion of the property. No drums were present in this area during our investigation. During the excavation, soils down to 9 ft bgs were field screened as indicated in the previous section. Although minor staining was observed on the surface, no visual or olfactory evidence of contamination was observed in any subsurface soils. In addition, PID levels were all background (0 ppm). However, assorted debris (tires, scrap metal, electrical conduit and wood beams) were encountered in Test Pit #6. Groundwater was not encountered. Bedrock was encountered in this pit at 9 ft bgs. As no violations of the 10 ppm by PID action limit were recorded, no soils were excavated for on-site treatment in accordance with the work plan. FORMER DRUM STORAGE – EAST OF QUARRY H&N field staff also oversaw the excavation of a test pit (Test Pit #7) in the former drum storage area east of the quarry. This area is also located in the northeast portion of the property. No drums were present in this area during our investigation.

No staining on the surface and no evidence of contamination were observed in subsurface soils in this area. In addition, PID levels were all background (0 ppm). However, assorted debris (scrap metal and large stone slabs) were also encountered in Test Pit #7. Groundwater and bedrock were not encountered. As no violations of the 10 ppm by PID action limit were recorded, no soils were excavated for on-site treatment in accordance with the work plan. CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS In June 2007, H&N performed a limited Site Investigation at Barrup Farms in Derby, VT. We oversaw the excavation of 7 test pits across the site to characterize soils conditions associated with the former 10,000 diesel UST and two former drum storage areas. Based on the results, we are able to advance the following conclusions:

• No evidence of contamination was encountered via field-screening methods (visual, olfactory and PID) in any of the three areas.

• Low levels of Alkylated Benzenes and Alkylated PAHs (via laboratory UIP scan) were detected in a subsurface soil composite sample in the former UST area. These detections are likely resultant of un-combusted material fallout from the fire that destroyed the main building.

• Minor staining was observed on surface soils in the former drum storage area next to the automotive garage. These soils did not exceed the 10 ppm by PID action level.

• Assorted debris consisting of tires, scrap metal, electrical conduit and wood beams was encountered in Test Pit #6 while scrap metal and large stone slabs were encountered in Test Pit #7.

Based on these conclusions, it appears that operations associated with the former 10,000-gallon diesel UST and drum storage have not grossly impacted subsurface soils at the site. Therefore, no soils were excavated for on-site treatment. As groundwater was not encountered in any of the test pits, subsurface water quality could not be investigated, although our assessment of soil quality indicates that VOC impacts to subsurface water quality in the areas presented would be minimal.

Mr. Ashley Desmond Page 4 RE: Barrup Farms – Site Investigation June 11, 2008 As our investigation was designed to assess VOCs in the areas described herein, it is unknown whether the assorted subsurface debris encountered in tests pits in the drum storage areas have impacted soil quality relative to inorganic or other organic forms of contamination. Without a hydrogeological assessment of the site utilizing monitoring wells, etc., groundwater discharge from these areas are uncertain. Based on topography and surface hydrology, however, it is possible groundwater is discharged at the seeps and stream to the southwest. Therefore, we recommend re-sampling SW-#1 and #2 (previously sampled in 2000 for VOCs only) for metals, PAHs and PCBs. If no violations of groundwater/surface water standards are recorded in these proposed samples, we recommend no further action at the site.
