Fall Arrest Fall Restraint Fall arrest systems are an active fall protection system that decelerates the decent of a falling
person through shock absorbing equipment until the person has come to a complete stop.
!Pros:
• The shock absorbing products lower the impact force on the persons body.
• Normally have more work ability in areas such as catwalks and fly floors
!Cons:
• In the event of a fall the person will require to be rescued from suspended harness
• Greater fall clearance will be required
Fall restrain systems are designed to prevent persons from reaching a fall
hazard, this is normally achieved through fixed length products
!Pros:
• Zero chance of a fall taking place • No rescue systems required
!Cons:
• Normally will have less work ability in areas such as catwalks and fly floors

How Much Can The Body Handle (Gravitational Force)
!• Between 5g - 8g will cause the average human to be loose consciousness\ • In the average human 14g will cause tearing of internal organs • After 3 minutes of a human hanging in a standard harness the blood will pool in the legs and
start to cause detrimental effects on the body, In a worse case scenario death of a human can apply within 10 minutes of suspension in a standard harness. These types of injures are referred to as suspension trauma, First responders should not use standard first aid treatment on casualties of suspension trauma (unless CPR is required) as this could cause reflow syndrome. First responders should contact emergency services for emergency advise.
How To Reduce The Risk Of Injury During A Fall / Suspension !• Insure correct type of harness is being used for the correct situation • Insure correct shock absorbers are applied to your height safety system • Insure harness is correctly fitted to personal at all times • Apply trauma straps to all harnesses • Limit the amount of suspension time for the persons • Have a rescue plan and kit prepared, ensure that all staff have been trained and are competent. • Never work alone
No venue should rely solely on emergency services as a rescue plan, with death a possibility after 10 minutes of suspension the chances are the emergency services will not have even arrived yet.
