There’s always a bit of magic to the way professional interior designers join a room’s elements to create a space of seamless, elegant beauty. we often wonder how to put that art into practice ourselves. Rhona Roe, founder and head designer of Hedgeroe with 25 years of experience, shares a few decorating tips, which are just a tastE of what will be revealed during her Summer MasteRClass Series.

Where do you start when designing a room? We do lots of freehand sketches which help to consider proportion and scale, these are the building blocks of any design and will affect furniture and décor choices. Developing scaled floor plans is a great way to experiment with positioning furniture, as you only place items once.

Deciding on a colour scheme can be difficult. How do the professionals

choose their palettes? Paint colours are often selected to enhance a room’s key features. Choose a colour that appears in a piece of art or a rug to balance a piece of furniture, this is a great starting point.

How should collections of art and objects be incorporated into a room’s scheme? The thoughtful curation of art and accessories adds character and impact to a room. Selecting pieces to display that work with a space’s colour, texture, and mood are key. Sometimes, choosing a piece that contrasts with the room’s aesthetic can have a powerful effect.

How do you create a luxurious scheme? To create an atmosphere of luxury, focus on textures, patterns, and styles that are timeless. Choosing harmonious colour palettes is a great way to achieve a look of luxury.

How do you ensure timelessness in interior design? Quality and craftsmanship will always stand the test of time. By blending the past and present in furniture

design and adding carefully chosen accent pieces, you will help an interior endure the ever-changing trends.

Any tips for creating interior summertime floral arrangements or living elements? Invest in a single great vase for large arrangements. For special occasions, we like to place tea light holders and fresh foliage in vases of different sizes. Seasonal greenery interspersed with flowers is always an excellent way to capture the season and bring it into your home.
