2 Kings 17: verses 5-6, 24, 29, 32

(5-6)"The king of Assyria invaded the whole country and, coming to Samaria, laid siege to it for three years.  In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria". (24) "The king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath and Sepharvaim, and settled them in the towns of Samaria to replace the Israelites; these took possession of Samaria and lived in its towns.“(29) "Each nationality made gods of its own and put them in the shrines on the high places built by the Samaritans; each nationality did this in the towns where it lived." (32) "They worshipped Yahweh as well, and they appointed priests out of their own number for the high places, and these officiated in the shrines on the high places.  They worshipped Yahweh and served their own gods at the same time..."2 Kings 17: 5-6, 24, 29, 32

Old Testament Backdrop Read Hosea chapter 2

Hos 2:16 And at that day, says YAHWEH, you shall call Me, My husband; and you shall no more call Me, My Baal (Lord or God).Hos 2:17 For I will take away the names of the Baals(god’s, idols) out of her mouth; and they shall no more be remembered by their name.Baʿal" may refer to any god or to human officials. Most refer to a variety of local spirit-deities worshipped as cult images, each called baʿal and regarded in the Hebrew Bible in that context as a "false god”

This history of discord between Judeans and Samaritans stretched back to pre-Samaritan times in the 10th century BC when the 10 northern tribes of Israel united in a civil war against David's descendant King Rehoboam.  The 10 tribes successfully broke away to form the Northern Kingdom of Israel.  The 10 tribes elected Jeroboam, a descendant of Joseph's son Ephraim, as their king.  To prevent the influence of the Southern Kingdom of Judah through the priesthood and the Temple in Jerusalem, Jeroboam expelled all the priests and Levites. Jeroboam rejected worship of the Covenant at the Temple in Jerusalem, set up a new Temple on Mt. Gerizim in violation of the Sinai Covenant, and reintroduced golden calf worship.

Jonh Chaper 4 And He came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the piece of land Jacob gave to his son Joseph. And there was there a spring of water that had belonged to Jacob, and Yahshua was tired from the fatigue of the journey. And He sat on the well, and it was the sixth hour. A woman came out of Samaria to draw water. Yahshua said to her, Give Me some to drink. For His disciples had gone away into the city that they might buy provisions. Then the Samaritan woman said to Him, How do You, being a Jew, ask to drink from me, I being a Samaritan woman? For Jews do not have social dealings with Samaritans.Yahshua answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of YAHWEH, and who is the One saying to you, Give Me to drink, you would have asked Him, and He would give you living water. The woman said to Him, Sir, You have no bucket, and the well is deep. From where then do You have living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob who gave us the well, and he and his sons and his sheep drank out of it? Yahshua answered and said to her, Everyone drinking of this water will thirst again; But everyone who drinks from the waters that I give to him will not thirst forever. But those waters that I give to him will become in him a spring of water that will spring up into life that is eternal. The woman said to Him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw. Yahshua said to her, Go, call your husband (Ba’al על .and come here ( ,ב

And the woman answered and said, I have no husband. Yahshua said to her, Well did you say, I have no husband. For you have had five husbands! And the one that you have now is not your husband. This you have spoken is true. The woman said to Him, my Master, I perceive that You are a prophet. Our fathers have bowed down and worshiped in this mountain, and you say that in Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary to worship.Yahshua said to her, Woman, believe Me that an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for life is of the Jews. But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeks such, the ones worshiping Him.Elohim is spirit, and the ones worshiping Him must worship in spirit and truth. The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming, When that One comes, He will teach us all things.Yahshua said to her, I AM! The One speaking to you.

Yahshuah’s Words in context !Putting it all together

Now let’s look at Yahshuah’s conversation with the Samaritan woman from the Old Testament , and historal perspective. Yahshuah is standing at the very location where Jeroboam established his capital, drive out all the Levite preists, and re-established the worship of the golden calf abolished at Mt. Sanai. A clear rejection of YahWah (God), temple worship in Jerusalem, and a consolidation of his own kingdom.

While at this site Yashuah speaks to a Samaritan woman breaking several Jewish social conventions. Yahshua said to her, Go, call your husband (Ba’al על .and come here ( ,ב Yahshuah is not speaking of a man who is her husband, or a man with whom she has had sexual relations with, he is speak to her about the ba’al (god) she is falsely worshipping. Yahshuah tells her to go get her “husband” (false god) knowing that it is not possible for her to do as ask by Yahshuah. A false god is not living and cannot act unlike Yahshuah who he tells her that he is the living and is with her at that very moment.

And the woman answered and said, I have no husband. Yahshua said to her, Well did you say, I have no husband. For you have had five husbands! And the one that you have now is not your husband. This you have spoken is true.

The five husbands spoken of here are once again not men, but false god’s.(pagen gods) Historicaly the remanant of the Isrealites intermarried with 5 other groups of people. All of which brought their own religion and god’s. Yahshuah is speaking of these 5 pegan gods the woman has worshipped in the past, and makes reference to the current favorite being worshipped presently.
