Well, in case you hadn’t noticed, it’s nearly the end of November and we stopped the press for this issue so we could fit in all the news from the 24-hr Dinghy Race and even a few Halloween photos too. Another roaring success—check out the 24-hr Dinghy Race write up plus all the photos from the weekend of fun in this issue’s Shutterbug.

Following the details recently shared by the Commodore at the members information on 19 November regarding the Club’s development, the next issue of Hebe Jebes will provide a full update, so watch this space.

In this issue...Sailability charts new waters, the Sailing Centre gets SLAM-ed, Hebe Dragons soon to chill out in Langkawi, art jamming and...Alfred’s camera gets wet—yes, we bring you all the most important stuff.

Check out all the events that are going on in and around the Club, both on and off the water. If you haven’t already, sign up for the infamous New Year’s Day Club BBQ on Hap Mun Beach—see the announcements section for details.

Also what are you up to? Don’t forget to send us your updates of what’s happening at the Club and in your lives. Whether it’s boating achievements; announcements—weddings, new arrivals and the like; Christmas fun; sailing tips; funny stories or just a few photos from around the Club—send them in and we’ll share them in upcoming issues of Hebe Jebes.

Happy reading...

Alan ReidGeneral Manager

With the publication earlier this year of the Club’s 50th anniversary book, we have received many requests from members who are no longer in Hong Kong to be sent a copy. Of these overseas members, the following have asked to pass on their regards to those members of the Club who have, in some cases, a long memory: Ex-Commodore

Stewart Wilson, who relocated to Malaysia; Ex-Commodore Ian Blair who is based in Cyprus; Ex-Commodore Ken Trice who is working in Sri Lanka; Clive Holgate who is retired in the Philippines; and Roger Mason who is retired and lives in Cornwall, uK. The Club still has copies of the book available to members, past or present, who would like a copy. Please contact the main office should you want a copy, or you may pick one up at the main bar.

I would like to remind members that only cars with a Disabled Persons Parking Permit should park their cars in the two parking bays marked as such, beside the entrance to the garden bar.

A fitting finish to a very successful Hebe Race Week, the annual Halloween night was, as usual, a great success. With over 70 children plus their parents attending the event, Rob, the Sailing Centre staff and the volunteers were busy all night. A big thank you to Al from Paisano’s for sponsoring yet another mountain of wonderful-tasting pizza. Check out the Halloween photos in this issue’s Shutterbug.

I have recently been asked to clarify the status of members’ spouses on several occasions. unlike some other clubs in Hong Kong, Hebe allows the spouse of a member signing rights on the member’s account. However, a member’s spouse cannot hire any club facility, such as a locker or a hard-standing space. Only the member can arrange to hire these types of facilities. Likewise, spouses are not allowed to vote or ask questions at an Annual General Meeting or Extraordinary Meeting. A member’s spouse may apply to become a member in their own right and, if the General Committee agrees to this, then the spouse will be required to pay the monthly subscription fee, the building levy, and be subject to the minimum food and beverage fee.

Finally, I would like to remind members of the following upcoming events, all of which are elaborated on elsewhere in the magazine; join the Boys of the Welsh Choir in the garden for singing, mince pies and mulled wine; Margaret and friends at the long Ladies Christmas Lunch; Christmas Day and the Children’s Christmas Party with Santa; Boxing Day Treasure Hunt on the water with a seafood lunch to finish; New Year’s Eve Ball at the Club; New Year’s Day on the beach with the Commodore and the tug-of-war rope; and join Chieftain Andy Miller for Burns Night with all the Teuchters in the Club.

Wishing you fair winds and happy and safe boating now that the weather has improved dramatically.

A few congratulations are in order in this issue, and the first of these goes to club staff Kylie and Wilson on the birth of their first baby, Lok Hin, on 26 September, the day of our last typhoon.

I would like to also congratulate all those at the Sailing Centre on managing a host of successful events over the period including the Optimists

Open, the ESF ‘Challenge Week’, Hebe Race Week and, of course, the Hebe Haven 24-hr Charity Dinghy Race. The Club is very fortunate to be so well supported by staff, instructors and volunteers alike —a fantastic effort.

Our dialogue with the authorities regarding lease renewal has progressed, and the Club’s efforts to provide non-member access to our dinghy sailing programmes, including those under the auspices of Sailability, have been pivotal in securing policy support for our lease renewal.

With the growth in membership over the years, the Club has added support facilities, by way of container offices and areas under awnings, to overcome the very limited building areas contained in our lease provisions. We are in discussion with the authorities to manage a transition from the current facilities towards better-designed and lease-compliant extensions to the Club for the future.

The Club is also pleased to announce that it has placed an order for an ‘Access 303’ dinghy for Sailability. These crafts are the next step up from the ones you currently see at the dock, and provide the progression to competitive racing for the sailors. The activity level from this sector of our dinghy programme is really impressive, thanks to the efforts of all those who turn up on Saturdays to make it happen.

You will have noticed a new look to the Hebe Jebes, the result of a partnership with Excel Media Group. Working with management and the publisher is a focus group made up from Hebe members, who will help to channel our articles and act as guardians of the character of the magazine. I am very pleased to advise that Cathy Delany Hobbs and Mark Newman have taken on this role.

Finally, to Events: a big thank you to the volunteers who made this year’s Art Jam, in aid of the 24-hr Charity Dinghy Race, such a success and we hope to see you all at the upcoming social and boating events.

Thank you and stay safe on the water.

Lok Hin﹗

Hebe Race Week (Hebe

Nicole ArnulphyRear Commodore - Sailing

After thirty-five years of sailing out of the Hebe Haven Yacht Club I felt it was time for me to step up and give back to a Club that has given me so much. I have fond memories of cruising with my parents on Sundays, sailing toppers with my friends on Saturday mornings and playing games of Hide and Seek around the boat yard. Eight years

ago, I met the then Rear Commodore of Sailing, Gault Rice, and he invited me to race with him on Struan. This is where Simon Blore taught me how to do foredeck! Since then I have had some amazing cruising and racing experiences on a huge range of boats and now I am delighted to serve the Club.

I cannot do it alone and have been truly blessed with a wonderful sailing committee with great people who represent so many different groups of sailors throughout the Club. This year’s Sail Com. includes Bridget Chan, Chris Austin, Colm Anderson, Elaine Goddard-Tame, Pete McCaffery, Rob Winter and Simon Jones.

Coming up we have the uK Sailmakers Winter Saturday Series, which will consist of two races in the afternoon on alternate Saturdays during November and December. Sailors are invited to participate in the whole series or individual races, as they prefer. If you are keen to see what goes on during the races, then why not volunteer to do assistant race officer duty. This is where you spend the afternoon on the Frasier Doig helping the Race Officer to keep track of the racing and results. For more information contact the sailing office at [email protected].

I am very open to input and feedback, so if you have any thoughts, ideas or comments please feel free to email them to me at [email protected].

And finally, I would like to thank CK and his team for all the hard work they have put into sailing at our Club over the past two years.

Eric L. Stark Rear Commodore - Operations

As we come up to autumn again there are a few interesting pieces to note. Four new additional cameras covering the north and south pontoons have been installed. This will give better security and assistance coverage to the pontoon areas. It will also complete this phase of security camera installation and give the Club a better overall view

of what is happening. The security system is designed to accommodate storage of the recorded areas for up to a one-month period.

As usual, we suspended the boatyard service and reshuffled boats on the hardstand and on moorings to accommodate the 24-hr race. We are also using this reshuffle to look at how we can improve our boat-launching services as well as try to find more areas for additional member boats in our ongoing effort to reduce the waiting list and time. We did have a few spots open up with the removal of several unused boats in the racking system and I would like to encourage members to either actively use their boats or give up the spots to members who are waiting on the lists.

There have been continued complaints of commercial activities in the marina area and I would urge caution to all members to please follow the bye-laws of the Club as these activities are forbidden. If you have questions of what is and is not allowed please feel free to have a chat with our Marine Manager, Mr Ale Shek or Ms Sarah Wong in the Marine Office who I am sure will be happy to help explain in further detail.

There have also been complaints of boats being tied up in the pontoon areas of the marina, both by members and non-members. With the addition of the new cameras, we are looking to be more proactive on policing this in the near future.

We hope you have an enjoyable and safe time on the water.

Club Matters

10 Hebe jebes • NOV/DeC 2013

Ale ShekMarine Operations

We have noticed that in the boatyard and car park area there has been an increase in animal waste/faeces. We would like to bring this to all members’ attention and remind all that we are all responsible for promoting good sanitation on the Club premises. Please make sure you clean up your pet’s waste after they have finished.

We have a waste oil collection facility next to the boatyard area and we have recently noticed that there are tanks of waste oil being left at the collection point. Members are reminded that the waste oil should only be poured into the designated collection drums for safety purposes. In case of fire, the consequences would be unthinkable. If the drums are full, please notify the Marine Office.

On another note, within the scope of the hardstand, please do not place any items such as dinghies, Kayaks, RIBs or diesel drums etc. so as to prevent obstruction of access to boats, which will affect other members. The HHYC Marine Office will remove all items without prior notice. Thank you for your attention!

Members who have hired boat crew to take care of their vessels, and to whom boat crew cards have been issued, must inform the Marine Office of any change to their status, so that old cards can be returned and cancelled and new cards issued should a new crew be appointed. Thank you!

Simon Robertson Sailing Centre Committee Chairman

With the onset of cooler weather conditions, one could think that the Hebe Haven Slam Sailing Centre staff would be enjoying some well-earned down time after a busy summer programme of sailing. unfortunately for the staff of the Centre, the months of October and November are the two busiest months of dinghy sailing in the Club.

In early October, Challenge Week saw over 50 school kids try their hand at sailing. Some of these kids had had previous sailing experience but the majority were first-time sailors. Immediately following Challenge Week, the Hebe Dragons Racing Squad spent a weekend on the water with international guest coach Raphael Di Donna from Uruguay. Raphael is a highly qualified racing coach, having trained several uruguayan Optimist champions in his career. The sailors were put through two weekends of intensive race training and all benefited immensely from his tuition.

Mid-October saw Hebe Race Week being held, with over 50 sailors and volunteers participating, making this year’s regatta one that will be remembered for a long time. Sailors were coached in the morning by Alfred and Raffa, and then had a chance to put into practice what they had learnt in the afternoon races. Wednesday of Race Week, the Around the Island Race took place—an excellent opportunity for parents to sail with their children. Hebe Race Week would not be the memorable regatta it is without the Monday night games, held at Trio Beach this year, and the talent quest and bingo night on the Wednesday. Friday afternoon saw the presentation of the prizes for the week’s sailing then, like all regattas, a party was held to celebrate the event.

This year, with the changing of the dates of Hebe Race Week, the party coincided with the Club’s Halloween Party and all enjoyed a great night of games and entertainment. Thank you Raphael for all your efforts in coercing the sailors and volunteers during Race Week and making the event a fantastic regatta enjoyed by all.

With Hebe Race Week behind them, the staff then shifted into high gear and started to prepare the Club’s dinghies for the annual 24-hr Charity Dinghy Race. It is by far the biggest dinghy event held by the Club and takes a huge amount of planning and coordination, all supervised by the chairman of the 24-hr Race Committee.

All Club equipment and dinghies had to be checked to make sure they were in good, running order and any necessary repairs were carried out. This also included any repairs to the borrowed dinghies from RHKYC and ABC.

This year’s 24-hr Charity Dinghy Race started in fantastic winds. With eight knots at the start and winds through the night predicted to have been 15 knots, this year’s event had the possibility of smashing the race record for the most laps sailed.

With the winds dropping completely when the sun went down and not picking up again until the next morning, however, the only record that was broken this year was for the longest timed lap. One unfortunate group of sailors took just under three hours

to complete a single lap. Congratulations to all sailors who took part this year in very trying conditions.

As the Centre tidied up from the 24-hr Race, the first week of November saw over 200 students complete taster days of sailing. The racing squad is continuing to train and compete in regattas around Hong Kong. December 7 and 8 sees Hebe Haven Yacht Club host the 2013 Hong Kong Optimist Dinghy Association (HKODA) Nationals. It is a great honour to host this event and the Club is expecting over 50 young sailors to compete in this year’s regatta.

Fair winds.

The new season is now well under way, with the Dragons having already competed in two major events: the ABC Sunseeker Opening Regatta and the HKSF International Regatta. The Dragons were also busy taking part in the Hebe Race Week and the famous 24-hr Charity Race.

For the Dragons, this new season means the start of the new partnership with SLAM—more information below.

You may have noticed a great deal of SLAM flags around the Club and, since mid-September, all our racers have been sporting a complete uniform including rash top, skiff shorts and a life jacket. Later in the year, they will receive their winter uniform as well as their out-of-water uniform. We urge them to take good care of their kits and wear them for both training and racing. We look forward to seeing them on the water with their complete gear!

The second day, Franck (Zoe’s father), joined Alfred on the safety boat. Sadly, Nathan could not make it so we were left with three boats. It was once again a beautiful day. After two general recalls, the first race was under way and, as usual, our three sailors were following each other on the starting line. Except that this time, they crossed it before the final gun shot. They all ended up disqualified for their mistake. The second and third races went well, and reassured Arthur of his supremacy in the team. Well done to Zoe—this weekend was to her advantage, having a light body!

到了賽事第二天,Franck( Zoe父親)乘坐Alfred安全艇出海

Dragons say the funniest things:Alfred to Zoe: “Zoe, what happen to you in the first race?”Zoe to Alfred: “I was following Arthur who was behind me.”Alfred to Zoe: “How can you follow someone who is behind you? And Arthur, what were you doing behind Zoe?”Arthur: “I had a bad start!”Alfred to Zoe: “Zoe, what would you do if the one you were

following—but behind you—was not there?”Zoe to Alfred: “I don’t know, I have no plan!”Nathan: “At the end of the first race, we thought

Nathan was lost and did not know where to go when we saw him next to the finishing line and close to Timothée.”

Alfred to Nathan: “Why did you talk to Timothée while he was still racing and ahead of you?”

Nathan to Alfred: “Someone told me the race was over at the buoy No. 4 so I stopped racing and wanted to tell Timothée.”

Arthur borrowed a life jacket from another club but when he got out on the water he found that it was broken! Plan B from Alfred, duct tape!

Zoe

Arthur

Arthur

September 7 and 8 were certainly the best days in a long time, with a nice steady wind and a blue sky over the Stanley area for the first regatta of the new season.

Our team, comprised of Arthur, Zoe, Timothée, Nathan and James Johnson (on Laser), was so happy to race against a new generation of sailors since all the older ones from last year have now moved on to a different boat because of their age. This will give some opportunity to the Dragons to go higher in the ranking.

After a very good start in most of the races (sometimes you could only see HHYC in the first three positions), our sailors tried to follow the others but too many tacks slowed them down. The first race went excellently, with Timothée reaching 18th position. In the second and third races, it was Arthur’s turn to catch up—making 18th place in the second and 16th in the third—with Zoe a few boats behind. As for Timothée and Nathan, they were left together trying to find the best path. The heat was strong at that time!

At the end of the day, both Alfred and I thought they would be exhausted from their day and we would have a quiet journey back in the car. This was not the case at all—the entire race was forgotten and the team was in full shape to sing and laugh.

sail Training

As expected, there was no race on Sunday—most of the boats were already back to their original club and tied down! Since we spent a lot of time waiting for the wind, it was amazing to see almost all the sailors from all the clubs swimming next to their boats.

Optimist

Alfred got pushed in the water with his camera inside his life jacket

After the second race, the committee boat started to move from Shelter Island in the direction of Sai Kung to prepare a new course. All the dinghies and coaches started to follow the race officer (bear in mind, there was no wind). Once all were getting closer, the RO started to veer away back to Shelter Island. Again all the boats had to turn back. It was like a long procession. Once in position, marks in the water, still no wind, we heard the preparatory signal for the third race. No one was able to move towards the starting line until five minutes later when the RO called the day off.

Hebe Dragons Overseas Training Camp, Optimist and Laser Squads, Langkawi Malaysia 1 – 10 February 2014

Once again, the Hebe Dragons (Optimist and Lasers) will be heading for the shores of Malaysia to take part in their annual pre-season Race Training Camp followed by an International Regatta in Langkawi, Malaysia.

The trip is a very important fixture on the racing calendar, as it will focus on many aspects of training as well as team building. This training camp has helped past participants to represent themselves, the Hebe Dragons racing team and Hebe Haven Yacht Club in regular events around Hong Kong and can offer opportunities for participation in further international events.

This invitation is for those sailors who have been identified by the Hebe Haven SLAM Sailing Centre as having a strong commitment to racing and possess considerable future racing potential.

HKSF International Regatta (20 – 22 Sept)

This regatta was a ranking regatta for the HKODA, i.e. it counted towards the Hong Kong national ranking. All the team was looking forward to racing against international competitors from Taiwan, the Philippines and, of course, the other Hong Kong clubs.

Sadly, a few days before, we heard that a typhoon might come close to HK over the weekend. This did not deteriorate the mood and on Friday the whole SLAM Dragons team was on the water, including some sailors from the B team. Alfred called up all the Oppies and Laser sailors just before launching their boats to give them their long-awaited new SLAM uniform, which consists of a rash top, a life jacket, skiff shorts, gloves and a cap! All of them were so proud to wear them for the first time—despite some last-minute sizing issues!

After a few AP flags, the first race was under way. As usual, a very good start for the Oppies and the Lasers, but a lack of wind forced the committee to shorten the race. In the Laser team, great performance from Ian Duncan who finished 2nd in the Laser 4.7 division!

Ian Duncan

On the Optimist part, the competition was tough with 67 boats on the water. Arthur and Zoe were very close to each other, followed by Timothée and the rest of the team side by side. Binckee Uiterwaal (Team B) managed to finish the race despite being in tears due to a strong pain in his back. Luckily, after applying an ice pad, he was up and running for the second race which was abandoned due to the lack of wind. The rest of the day was a long waiting period in 36-degree heat with most of the kids out in the water swimming around their boats.

Rico Se

On Saturday, because of the typhoon, it was very important to run as many races as possible. Four of them were completed against a strong wind in the morning which proved lethal to most of the team, except for Timothée and Alan who made it for one more race. Zoe hurt her back while the rest were exhausted and preferred to retire.

Hebe Haven SLAM Sailing Centre partnership 2013

We are delighted to officially announce that our partnership with SLAM has been signed and sealed.

After months of on-going communications and discussions, we have the pleasure of officially becoming the Hebe Haven SLAM Sailing Centre.

You will notice the rebranding of the Sailing Centre has now taken place, with a number of exciting plans currently coming into the Club and Sailing Centre.

The Hebe Dragons Team are now looking very smart and professional out on the water, as you will see from recent photos or time spent at the Club on one of the training days.

New staff uniforms and safety equipment has also brought the look of the Sailing Centre in line with the high expectations that we have, and there have been many positive comments from people about the new look at the Sailing Centre.

Hopefully, over the winter months, we will set up a club merchandise shop for everyone to purchase the numerous items that SLAM has to help you kit out for your sailing on both dinghies and yachts, as well as Hebe Haven-branded items such as memorabilia for friends and family.

Watch this space for updates.

Hebe Dragons(Optimist隊 及 Lasers隊)再次前往馬來西亞

What are the benefits of this training camp?

Taking the sailors off to a very different environment and sailing location is hugely beneficial to both the individual and the team. The sailors have an opportunity to truly bond and build a team spirit that will help them upon their return to Hong Kong and in representing Hebe Haven Yacht Club in regattas and events.

The coach and team manager have the perfect opportunity to spend dedicated hours with sailors on and off the water, instilling both the physical and mental discipline required for competitive racing.

Location The team will fly to Langkawi, Malaysia, to take advantage

of the fantastic facilities at the Langkawi Sail Training Centre. The sailors will charter boats that are in good condition and will use the Optimist and Laser dinghies for the duration of the trip. The warm waters and fresh winds are ideal to train the squad in conditions that will allow the coach to maximise the time on and off the water during the winter months when it may not be as ideal to sail here in Hong Kong.

Dragons team a & b trainingIn order to build up competitiveness, Alfred will now run

a weekly regatta during training, and a monthly one with a minimum of three races. There will be a monthly ranking which will also include the official races. There will be the following handicap (low point ranking) according to each event:

• Weekly/Monthly Regatta: 1• HHYC Regatta (ex-HHYC winter race/ABC/RHKYC race

which are not HKODA): 0.75• HKODA Regatta (next one will be ABC): 0.5• Nationals Regatta: 0.25Only the 10 best sailors will make it onto Team A. The others

will be sailing and training in Team B until the next ranking (every three months).

The top three sailors in Team A will be able to choose their own boat name. The top four Hebe sailors in the Hebe Haven HKODA Nationals 2013 will also be allowed to name their boats.

Raphael Di Donna report

The Club has been very fortunate to have the additional coaching expertise of Raphael Di Donna from uruguay working at the Centre for a two-week period during Hebe Race Week, the 24-hr Charity Dinghy Race and for a couple of training weekends with the Hebe Dragons squads.

It has been extremely productive to have the opportunity for our young Dragons team to learn from another popular and professional coach on and off the water with our sailors. The team has really benefited from his time with them and his good work has had a positive impact upon the squad and sailors who have spent time with Raphael at the Club. We look forward to working with Raphael again in the future and thank him for his time and efforts with the Hebe Dragons.

Dinghy hire report

More club members are heading out onto the water on the fleet of dinghies in recent months. This is a positive sign and we will look to build up the number of adult sailors taking out dinghies on to the local waters of Sai Kung.

One area where we need your help is when you return to the Club after your dinghy hire. It has been brought to our attention that unfortunately some boats are not being packed away properly after the charter. Please help us to stow the boats properly on your return to the Club. If you are unsure of the correct procedure, please ask us as we are more than happy to help. Thanks for your help in leaving the boats as you found them when chartering them for your day on the water.

With most of the students taking ‘introduction to sailing’ courses, the weather was ideal for their five days on the water on the fleet of Laser Pico and Laser Bahia dinghies and J80s.

Within the group, there were some students with previous sailing experience, so this allowed for a fleet of Laser 4.7 and Radials to take to the waters for some more advanced training.

Many thanks to the teachers (Lisa, Louise, Chris and Rich) who once again helped us coordinate another successful programme for 45 more students to take part in the sport at Hebe Haven.

Welcome to Hong Kong Academy & Kellet School

We are delighted to finally have both Hong Kong Academy and Kellet School join our sailing programmes after their recent relocation from the south side of Hong Kong.

It is great to have both these schools send students to the Centre for activities out on the local waters, that we feel are the best for sailing within Hong Kong.

We look forward to forging a solid relationship with the schools and students who have and will take to the waters out of Hebe Haven, and welcome the families who have recently moved to Sai Kung for a different but more fun place to live in Hong Kong.

Racing

Friday was the last day of racing and races 10 and 11 of the series were held—allowing some sailors to discard their worst results of the week, and determining the finalists in the Optimist and Pico fleets.

It was a week of incredible winds and amazing efforts made more enjoyable for the sailors by the expertise they gained daily in the race clinics. They placed as follows:

• Optimist 1st Arthur Hainz, 2nd Jasmine Scholer, 3rd Nicolle Scholer.

• Pico 1st Rose Duckworth, 2nd Derek Warren & Jack Hart, 3rd Zachary Blacker.

To top off the week, Friday night was a scary, ghoulish evening of fun and dress-up with the Halloween Party. It was hosted by the Sail Training Centre staff and ably emceed by Rob Allen who kept the children on their toes with crazy games such as eating donuts from a string, mummy-wrapping and apple-bobbing.

The volunteer mums and dads, and the Sail Training Centre staff who worked tirelessly during the week to ensure that children were fed and watered, and events proceeded seamlessly deserve a huge THANK YOu, as do the organisers for not going nuts!

Looking forward to next year.

Hebe Race Week

Wow, what a week! Thirty Optimist and Pico sailors, ranging in age from seven to 13 years old, completed 13 full races out in Shelter Bay, Sai Kung.

There was training in the mornings, racing in the afternoons and fun and games into the evenings.

Guest national racing coach Raphael Di Donna from uruguay took up the challenge to provide the race team with his wealth of expertise, and I think all who watched and those that sailed will agree the improvement over the past nine days has been huge.

A big thank you to Raphael. On Monday evening the weather was gorgeous for our BBQ

and beach games at Trio until after dark, with the final—British Bulldog (including parents)—held under the lights. A very sandy trip home!

On Tuesday evening we were treated to HHYC’s own Peter Austin telling us how he started his sailing journey on Optimists at the age of seven at HHYC and went on to compete in the Youth America’s Cup for Team GB. What an incredible journey of an amazing young man and a fabulous inspiration to all our young sailors.

Wednesday was the fun Around the Island Race held around the Pak Sha Chau island of Sai Kung. Fun was had by all, including a few of the volunteer mums in Picos and a Bahia. I took part myself on the Bahia, expertly crewed by my children Derek and Hannah who were able to teach me a lot of what the Club has been passing on to them these last few seasons. It was excellent and we hope to see more volunteer sailors next year. As evening came it was time for our traditional talent show emceed by young volunteers Julie Joubert and Megan Hughes, with some wonderful performances ranging from Irish dancing and trumpet playing to gymnastics—proving that the kids’ talents don’t just run to nautical themes. Jeremy Sheldon (parent volunteer) called a very exciting Bingo game to round out another action-packed day at Race Week.

Thursday was back to business. Luckily (or not, due to the bruises I sustained) I was able to accompany the coaches on a safety boat in the morning—watching the Optimist Fleet practising race starts—then on the committee boat in the afternoon, watching both fleets compete in races seven, eight and nine of the series. What an improvement in all the sailors’ expertise and smooth sailing!

events

A new feature this year was the stand-up paddle board race, we hope that this event will become more popular in the future and may also be included as a 24-hour event.

The 24-hr Charity Dinghy Race Committee have put a lot of effort into this year’s event and I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks for all their efforts and support. Good job, team!

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to all the sponsors, their contributions make a big difference to the everyday lives of the beneficiaries of this racing event, thank you so very, very much.

Once again we are so lucky to have the staff in place that make this weekend such a well-run, smooth operation. I am sure that you will all join us in extending our appreciation, for their fantastic efforts, to the staff of the Hebe Haven Yacht Club.

And last but not least, to the sailors—over 500 of them this year—thank you for being part of our racing event. I would also like to thank all the volunteers who help us run the event, without you it would not run. Thank you to the more than 300 volunteers who helped this year. Please be on the look out for the date of next year’s event so you can sign up to help or join the committee.

Check out heaps more photos from the 24-hr Dinghy Race in this issue’s Shutterbug.

During the month of October, as the days become cooler after the long hot summer months, a group of like-minded people gather at the Hebe Haven Yacht Club for a dinghy race. This is not your usual run-of-the-mill type of yacht race, this is not your Saturday-afternoon-around-the-cans type of race, nor an Around-the-Island type of race, no! This is a 24-hour dinghy race.

A 24-hour dinghy race, a race that is fiercely campaigned for by the competing sailing teams. At the same time, allowing room for the less competitive sailors. But even more than this, it is an event that raises money for charities. This year the funds raised will benefit Children’s Cancer Foundation, Enlighten, Ideal, Treats and our own Sailability, which is based at the Club.

Alongside the race, there was a carnival atmosphere generated with stalls selling various items, food stalls and the usual and very popular beer tent. There were bouncy castles, face painting and games for younger children and a lot of entertainment provided by live bands, DJ and solo singers. Thank you for supporting this event.

events

The evening was great fun and a good chance to catch up with friends whilst waiting for paint to dry. A few glasses of French wine with delicious cheeses by D’Oli also helped to inspire the artists and, if you preferred German beer, Westwind Food & Beverage (Hong Kong) Limited had a range for tasting.

For those who preferred not to join the painting, there was an entertaining darts challenge. The competition was fierce and, after the grand final, Rob Allen was announced as the Darts Master.

By 10.30pm the final touches were made to the artworks, paints and brushes were cleaned and we celebrated a successful event surrounded by colour.

Thanks to everyone who supported the event, especially Dee Saunders for her coordination of supplies and Emma Warburton for her expertise. Thanks also to our sponsors D’Oli and Westwind Food & Beverage (Hong Kong) Limited.

Watch this space for pre-event notices for the next Art Jam!

The Garden Bar at Hebe was decked out by the Marine Staff, with tarpaulins covering the floor ready for some paint slinging. Not for redecoration, but for the 2013 Art Jam evening. Raising money for the 24-hr Dinghy Race charities, this event combined wine, beer and cheese tasting with painting. A fine opportunity for our sailing community to explore their artistic talents and slap some paint on canvas.

All standards of expertise were there, ranging from well-prepared artists with ideas and plans, to others ready to ‘have a go’. Over the evening the blank canvases were transformed into a fantastic exhibition. Landscapes, portraits, abstracts; different styles and techniques appeared and were admired. Emma Warburton was available for advice and assistance on which techniques to use to achieve beautiful results.

Sailability

Asian Para Games—Team A awarded 2nd Prize. A tremendous effort from all

The Sailability Award for the sailor who made the most progress in the 2012/13 year, was given to Simon Mountain (Saturday Sailor).

Pictured here—a young ‘happy chappy’ I think!

As part of the 24-hour race prize giving presentation, Sailablilty were delighted to receive the prize for the best dressed team! Well, we did stand out a little—didn’t we!

Our new 3 Access 303s (Pink, Blue and Orange have been sponsored by HHYC; ABC & the RHKYC respectively).

Most sincere thanks go to their respective general committees and the membership of each sailing club. It is fantastic to see the Hong Kong sailing family come together to support us in our quest to represent Hong Kong next year.

We are now looking at a new class of boat—the 2.4-metre single-handed class—which we are to sail (in addition to the Access 303 class) in Korea next year. By the way, we have one firm sponsor for these and are seeking two more!

In October—and with thanks again to the Dutch Association in Hong Kong—we finally received delivery of our first safety boat. Our new engine has arrived and everything is being made ready for the formal launch party in the coming few weeks.

It’s all getting very exciting isn’t it! We have a duty to report that several of the original

trustees changed during the month and our new Trustee Committee comprises:

• Continuing: Mike Rawbone, Michael Randall, Barry Hill, Mark Houghton & David Campbell (continuing).

• Newly appointed: Mark Ashton, David Williams & Surinder Punjya—independent (newly appointed).

• Stepping Down: Marven Bowles and Edward Bunker (independent) to whom we offer our sincere thanks for their past contribution and support.

We have one remaining post open should you know of someone who is great at fundraising and has the time!

As always, our sincere thanks go to HHYC for all their support and all our volunteers who consistently turn out on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays—rain or shine. We could not do it without you.

1st Prize to the ‘Saturday Sailors’. A really happy but tired lot!

Words Mike Rawbone

Sailability Charts New Waters

For those of you with a memory, the last Sailability article finished with the comment, “Whatever next?” Well, I am pleased to report a lot has happened since that question was posed…

Firstly, and as many of you will have read in the SCMP and/or heard on RTHK, Sailability has become a beneficiary of ‘Operation Santa Claus’ this year. Our project is to be given $604,000 as a contribution towards training our Para sailors and getting our team to South Korea next October. Wonderful news as the balance of costs will be met by the Hong Kong Paralympics Committee. All we need now is the winter kit!

Secondly, the 24-hour event was an outstanding success for HHYC, Sailability and all those who participated. It was also good to see the event covered by ‘now TV’ news and filmed by RTHK.

In all we had six Access 303s competing, four of which sailed for the full 24 hours. Prizes were subsequently awarded in the Access 303 class to:1st Saturday Sailors—Sailors with learning difficulties

Wine of the Month

Crisp acidity and subtle aromas of citrus fruit and freshly cut grass create a bright, expressive wine. Enjoy this superior Sauvignon Blanc with crab salad, calamari, prosciutto-wrapped pears, and roasted chicken.

The wine has a smooth texture and sweet, red-fruit character that distinguishes California’s finest Cabernet Sauvignons. Flavors of cherry and blueberry, along with smoky oak and vanilla accents invigorate the palate and provide a lengthy finish. Enjoy with standing rib roasts, grilled steak, roast duck, spareribs, lasagna, or flavorful hard cheeses

Announcements

This annual overnight multisport race has been organised by the Aberdeen Boat Club since 1985 and the Club is delighted to announce the 30th running of the race in 2014.

The Four Peaks Race is about PEAK PERFORMANCE. With the average boat taking 24 hours last year, the race requires landings by transfer craft or swimming, speed and strategy on land over rough terrain, and fine seamanship and sailing skills on the water. Tactics, practice and stamina play a big part, and rewards for all bring competitors back again and again for both the excitement and the camaraderie. Courses are 80 – 90 nautical miles for Division A and 50 – 60 nautical miles for Division B.

The ultimate Hong Kong challenge for sailors and runners alike, the race is governed by strict rules and safety regulations. Competing boats meet ISAF Offshore Special Regulations Category 4 and have a minimum LOA of 7m. Engines may be used only in an emergency, or out of gear to charge batteries or weigh anchor. The minimum crew is five persons, with a minimum of two runners climbing each peak and a maximum of three sailors who are non-runners. Any crew member may climb 1 – 4 peaks.

Around 50 boats from all horizons will be on the start line for two days of top racing. For some sailors, it will be their last race in Optimist having reached the age of 15 at the end of 2013. For some younger ones, it will be their first great experience to enter such an event.

Prizes will be offered to the overall winner, the first five overall, the first three in the under-12s category and the first three in the under-10-years-old category.

The Hong Kong National Champion, based on the 2013 ranking, will also be rewarded.

A fantastic buffet organised by Hebe Haven will be offered to all competitors on the last day.

By the time you read this, the notice of race will have been posted on the HKODA website (http://www.hkoda.org) and sent out to all the HK coaches.

This event could not be organised without the support of HKODA partners:

title sponsor: The Hebe Haven Yacht Club

co-sponsors: Pizza Express, California Sunshine Fresh Milk

supporting sponsors: SLAM, Watsons water, Watsons Iso-Tone, Cadbury Chocolate

Hebe Have Yacht Club in association with the Hong Kong Optimist Dinghy Association present the Hong Kong National Championship on 7 and 8 of December to be held in the vicinity of Port Shelter. This event is hoisted and supported by The Hebe Haven Yacht Club.

Each year, the top Hong Kong Optimist sailors participate in five official HKODA ranking regattas (ABC southside in December, RHKYC Middle Island in April, HHYC Open Regatta in June, HKSF Festival of Sport in June and HKSF Open regatta in September) and in the HKODA Nationals.

The day is always a happy occasion and seems to encourage good weather. This is helpful for the number of people who decide a swim would be a good way to start the New Year. It also enhances the view of the club boats in the bay, many dressed with flags and decorations.

By four o’clock everyone is ready for beach games. Running races, wheelbarrow races, three-legged races and egg and spoon races are part of the programme for children and adults. One of the highlights is the egg-throwing competition where partners throw and catch eggs whilst moving further apart. As eggs break on the beach or on the competitors, eventually a team is victorious, throwing their egg the furthest distance across the beach.

The final event is the tug-of-war involving everyone on the beach: best-of-three pulls across the beach. Then, as the sun sets, everyone packs up and ambles back to the boats and home to Hebe.

So, this year put the New Year’s Day barbecue on your calendar. Come and enjoy good company and food. Transport is available from the Club, or bring your own boat. Barbecue packs can be ordered from the Club or bring your own picnic. This is the perfect opportunity to finish up those mince pies and Christmas cake.

See you there: 1 January 2014, Hap Mun Beach.

If you have attended the HHYC Boxing Day Quiz at Yau Ley Restaurant you are no doubt one of those hardy souls who have also continued the party on New Year’s Day by travelling to the HHYC barbecue at Hap Mun Beach.

Every first day of January, Hebe sailors and friends head across to Hap Mun Beach. Some sail or motor, whilst others take the Fraser Doig. At the beach, club staff set up barbecues and manage a sampan service between boats and the quay.

It is a great opportunity to meet up with many friends and share a toast to the New Year. People take the time to snooze on the sand in recovery from the previous night whilst around the barbecue pits people share recipes and food cooking techniques. Many families get together to build sandcastles and share childcare, enjoying the day after the night before!
