Lesson 1: Heat

I. What is heat?

a. A form of energy that keeps us warm

II. How are heat and temperature different?

A. Heat causes particles in matter to move faster

B. Temperature measures of how fast the particles move

III. How does heat move through a solid?

A. Conduction- Movement of heat through a solid

1.Conductor- Heat moves through easily (packed tightly)

- all metals

2.Insulator- Heat has hard time moving through (lots of air)

- paper, cardboard, home insulation, hot mitts

IV. How does heat move through a liquid?

A. Convection- heat moving through liquid and gases

V. What do we call the movement of heat?

A. Radiation- heat movement in waves
