• Valencia has a Subtropical Mediterranean climate. The annual average temperature is 17.8 °C,
• Residential use building: – Constructed in 2001– 4 floors – 12 flats – total floor area of 610 m2
• Annual energy consumption is 61 kWh/m2
– 54 kWh/m2 natural gas, – 7 kWh/m2 from electricity.
• The annual thermal needs are 23 kWh/m2 for space heating,
• 25 kWh/m2 for DHW • 22 kWh/m2 for space cooling

• Updated thermal energy generation system consists of:– A solar thermal field, – Adsorption pump unit, – Three air-water electric heat
pumps,– Three water tanks (heat and
cool)• The system generates the heat and
cooling of DHW and air conditioning demand.
• The heat and cold energy are stored in the heat and cooling water tanks and supplied to the DHW and heating/cooling distribution circuits.

• Solar thermal array connected to two thermal stores,
• The solar heat transfer is controlled by an algorithm in the SCI-BEMS:– The objective is
maximizing the energy efficiency of the system;
– The heat can be used for:• Cooling, • Also for domestic hot
water purposes,• And space heating.

• Objectives:– Generate energy savings in
heating, cooling and domestic hot water of 30% through renewable generation sources,
– With a less that ten years payback period.
• Results according to simulations:– Solar thermal system covers till
the 52% of the heating (SH+DHW) energy needs,
– The system provides a total cooling energy production up to 27%.
