Heat pump & solar

Bosch PowerTec is combining solar electricity and heating. The combination of photovoltaic system and heat pump is controlled by the e.Control unit. The sys-tem is designed so that the use of electricity by other devices in a home, such as a refrigerator, will take precedence over the heat pump. This prevents the heat pump from using all of the solar energy, causing other home appliances to revert to drawing power from the grid.

The system can also be optionally upgraded with the BPT-S 5 Hybrid battery storage solution, which stores solar energy in a powerful lithium-ion battery. This can be used to power the heat pump even when there is little or no sunlight. In order for this to work, a heat pump with the ‚SG-Ready‘ label needs to be used. The demonstration system uses a heat pump made by Junkers, which is a member of the Bosch Group. In a typical four-person household, the sys-tem can increase energy self-sufficiency to an impres-sive 75 %. During the summer months, even 100 % can be achieved.

In addition to noise reduction, the optimised air-flow also offers another advantage: It reduces the amount of electricity needed to drive the EC fan, while maintaining the same output of air. The company has also addressed the issue of ice formation on the evaporator. If the sensors in the cooling circuit detect that the temperature has dropped below a specific value, then the flow of air is automatically in-creased. This reduces cooling, so less ice forms on the evaporators.

Ochsner describes its GMLW 5 plus air heat pump as the quietest heat pump on the market. The company has reduced the sound pressure level of its heat pump, which is now at 20 dB(A) under full load. Its so-called ‚silent mode‘ actively reduces the noise level even further.

The efforts to develop better sound insulation did not come out of the blue. Air heat pumps that make too much noise can lead to problems with neighbours. For this reason, air heat pumps may increasingly re-quire authorisation in Germany, according to Ochsner.

However, its products are well prepared in case this happens, thanks to the low noise levels they produce.

The performance data of Ochsner‘s products is also quite good. The GMLW 5 plus, with a power range of 3.7 to 6.8 kW, has an impressive coefficient of performance (COP). The COP at operating point L2/W35 (air tempera-ture 7 °C / water temperature 35 °C) is 4.1, measured in ac-cordance with EN14511. Even at L-10/W35, the heat pump achieves a COP of 3. The pump achieves these high COP values by using two electrical valves and one thermal expansion valve, among other things.

The “smart grid”-capable heat pump also pro-vides cooling during the summer. According to Och-sner, the pump has a power of 4.4 kW at L30/W18 and an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 3.3. This means that the heat pump can run on self-generated solar electricity.

The fact that this heat pump is a premium prod-uct is clearly demonstrated by the warranty terms. Ochsner offers a seven-year full warranty as well as a ten-year warranty against rusting through for the out-door unit.

Collectors

The solar collector manufacturer STI from Meerane in Saxony will be presenting the third generation of dis-charge systems for drain-back applications at the Intersolar 2014 in Munich. In the most recent imple-mentation, STI uses a collective discharge system similar to the one used in its Drain Box system, which allows entire collector fields to be emptied into one container.

„The ease with which the system can be put into operation is a major advantage of the new generation of products. The drain-back system is delivered to the customer completely pre-assembled with a modern high-efficiency pump, a customised solar controller as well as hydraulic connections. Once the system is filled with glycol, it automatically begins operating without any additional adjustments. This saves our customers a tremendous amount of time,“ René Fiedler, Managing Director of STI GmbH said.

Another new product that STI will introduce in Munich will be a heat pump collector. STI‘s collector, which is now ready for series production, can be in-tegrated directly into a heat pump system. „The completely new design of the collector, which dif-fers significantly from available collectors, expands the solar spectrum in the heat pump system by 80 %. The coefficient of performance (COP) of the heat pump system can easily be doubled using the directly integrated solar system,“ René Fiedler said in conclusion.

part of a current research project, Narva and its coop-eration partners ISFH and KBB have developed an in-novative, patented heat pipe, which allows the maxi-mum temperature to be set between 100 °C and 200 °C. The cut-off point at 100 °C is particularly in-teresting because it can prevent the storage system from overheating. Even a solar circuit made of plastic would be conceivable. The heat pipes are not only suitable for vacuum tubes, but can also be used in a flat-plate collector.

The new heat pipe system from Viessmann is not designed for simple house roofs. The company is introducing a concept that will allow the economi-cal use of solar thermal energy in heating grids at collector temperatures of up to 120 °C. To achieve this, it uses a new heat pipe vacuum tube collector in combination with a steel manifold (DN 50) that is manufactured on-site. What makes it special is the fact that Viessmann uses a roll-bonding process to make it. Units are assembled consisting of six evap-orator strands that share one condenser. At the construction site, the condenser is connected to

the insulated steel manifold, which will later ab-sorb the heat from the heat pipes. Viessmann plans to achieve a heating price of 5 €-ct/kWh with the system, enabling it to compete with fossil fuel sys-tems.

Regulating and controlling

The controller manufacturer Resol will be exhibiting its new PSW series of pump signal converters at the Intersolar. The converters are available in three ver-sions: Basic, Premium and Universal. The PSW Basic converts the rotation speed signal of a controller into a suitable input signal (PWM, or 0 to 10 V) for a high-efficiency pump. The PSW Premium is similar in func-tionality to the PSW Basic, but is additionally equipped with a relay output for the power supply of the pump. In addition, it has an overrun function to reduce the frequency of switching processes of the high-efficien-cy pump. The PSW Universal can be used in many sit-uations where special ‚language skills‘ are necessary. It can generate a total of 80 different signal combina-

tions of pulse packets, leading and trailing phase angle, PWM, 0 to 10 V, 0 to 20 mA, 4 to 20 mA, as well as the corresponding inverted signals. In addition, it also has a separate L‘ output that eliminates the need for an external power supply for the pump.

If a high-efficiency pump is installed at some later point in time, it is not necessary to replace the com-plete controller. Resol can also provide a Wilo Yonos Para high-efficiency pump, if required. This set comes pre-wired and saves time and work during installa-tion. The set is available in different nominal diameters.

For price-conscious customers, Steca is offering the two new compact hot water controllers TF B001 and TF B202. Both controllers are designed for use with fresh water stations that operate in ranges of 0 to 20 to 40 and 0 to 80 L/min. To keep costs low, the TF B001 uses just one single sensor. Steca relies on a multifunctional Grundfos Direct Sensor that can measure flow as well as temperature. The TF B202 is also equipped with a multifunctional controller, which is made by Huba Control. With a total of three sensor inputs (two for temperature) and two out-puts, the TF B202 offers a slightly more comprehen-sive scope of performance than the TF B001. Both controllers can control the rotational speed of con-ventional wet rotor pumps as well as the newer high-efficiency pumps. In addition, the TF B202 can also control circulation pumps. For this purpose, the controller can supply time, temperature or pulse-dependent control.

Sorel Mikroelektronik has greatly expanded its range of products this year in the area of heating controllers (see SW&W 04/2014, page 52). One of the innovations is a biomass controller. The device controls the temperature difference between the generator and the storage system, similar to the way a solar controller does. It is primarily intended for fireplaces or pellet stoves with water chambers. As soon as the boiler reaches 65 °C, the controller starts the charging pump. It then has to quickly in-crease the rotation speed because temperatures usually rise quickly in the range between 65 and 90 °C. The system needs to avoid reaching 95 °C be-cause then the thermal discharge safety device would kick in to prevent the water circuit from over-heating. Booth: C4.436

Technische Alternative introduced a new web inter-face called C.M.I. Control and Monitoring Interface at the beginning of 2014. The interface provides a powerful platform for system monitoring, visualisa-tion, remote maintenance, data logging, as well as alerts. The system can be accessed either directly via a LAN network or via a secure web portal using a plug-and-play solution. Using the free software TA-Designer, a user can easily create a multi-page system visualisation. In the future, Technische Alter-native will provide programming templates and de-sign suggestions for menu pages. This allows control-ler parameters and system information to be dis-played in a personalised graphical user interface. Many of the features of C.M.I. can be activated using drag-and-drop actions. Remote access to the system is possible from any place at any time via an Internet-enabled device such as a PC, smartphone or tablet.Technische Alternative is particularly proud of the de-sign, which received a prize at the Plus X Awards.

Grundfos has improved its sensor components and will display new sensor series as well as optimised existing series. The company has optimised the sensor hardware and software. A more powerful microprocessor and improved algorithms provide better signal resolution and improve the accuracy of flow, pressure and temperature measurements. The optimisation also improves the stability of the signals.

Grundfos has also improved the resolution of the sensor chip, making temperature measure-ments more accurate. In addition, sensors are now available that are designed for use in highly

cal careous and magnetite-laden liquids. These optimisations have been implemented in the new MFS ( Multi Functional Sensors) series. The series includes 3-in-1 sensors that can measure values for flow, pressure and temperature simultane-ously. The output signals can be transmitted dig-itally.

The optimisations have also been implemented in existing series, such as the Vortex Flow Sensors with additional temperature measurement from the VFS and VFS-QT series, the pressure sensors with additional temperature measurement from the RPS series, as well as the DPS differential pressure sen-sors with additional temperature measurement.

Systems and package solutions

Baymak is offering a new system called Aqua Solar. The company paid special attention to an aesthetic appearance. The tank has been modified and is pro-tected from corrosion by titanium added enamel and magnesium anodes. Tanks are insulated with poly-urethane with a density of 40g/cm³. New highly UV resistant plastic side covers will allow easy transpor-tation and easy installation. The system is available with a storage capacity from 160 to 300 litres.

Depending on the system size, the Aqua Solar uses either one or two laser welded flat plate collec-tors with 2 or 2.5 m² each.

If you want to learn more about the requirements that heaters need to fulfil in order to receive the Ecodesign label, then Oventrop is the place to go. Oventrop has developed an app with which you can calculate the energy class of a package. Up till now, users had to manually enter the data of heating units, storage systems and controllers. Data for Oventrop products, such as storage, controllers and collectors, will soon be implemented. The data for almost all types of boilers on the market will also be available and can be selected quickly and easily using selection screens. This will enable heating sys-tems experts to calculate any package label with minimal effort.

Innovations from suppliers

Absorber coating specialist Alanod will also be intro-ducing new products. After acquiring its competitor BlueTec a few weeks ago, Alanod has now started in-cluding the Eta-Plus coatings in its own product range. The coating is available in versions for copper as well as aluminium absorbers and provides an ab-sorption level of 95 %. This makes it comparable to the Mirotherm and Sunselect coatings from Alanod‘s own product range.
