Heartland High School
Home of the Wolves
Heartland High School is known to be a second chance for a lot of its stu-
dents. This quarter we wanted to share some of what's going on at Heart-
land with the world. Heartland has been around for 26 years and has had
the honor of mentoring many young adults. Heartland last unveiled a
school newspaper in 2011. We are proud to reintroduce The Heartland
Highlander.

The Artistic mind is a strange and confusing thing. In this article,
we're going to venture through the artistic mind of Zeon Neuway, a
sophomore at Heartland High School.
“Art is when you hear a knocking from your soul and you answer
it.” Terri Guillemet.
Zeon was born and raised in McCall, Idaho, where he discovered
his artistic talent at a young age when he saw other people draw.
His art teacher, Mrs. Dittmer, helped him expand his artistic mind
from stick figures to cool detailed drawings and sculptures. His big-
gest artistic milestone was when he won the school art competition
the last two years in a row.

Heartland is proud to be the home of three Vandals athletes. Seth Waite and
Quinton Clayson play on the Vandal basketball team and Ben Olson wrestles.
Balancing school and athletics is not easy and we are impressed with the level of
commitment that these three demonstrated throughout the season.
“Its hard to beat a person who never gives up.” Babe Ruth
“Art is not what you see but what you make others see,.” Degas.

Becky Dwello
“It take’s a big heart to shape little minds." Anonymous. Becky Dwello is
one of the four wonderful teachers we have at Heartland High School. Be-
fore teaching at Heartland she taught at New Meadows High School for
many years. In that time she developed a unique teaching style based on
trust and curriculum that is more interactive and hands on for her students.
Outside of teaching at Heartland, she is very active and she enjoys the out-
doors. Becky has horses and loves to kayak. Becky teaches History and
English at Heartland and she enjoys both subjects. However, History is her
passion so Becky's English classes are more history based. We are proud to
have Becky at Heartland and she is a wonderful woman and teacher.

On February 10th Heartland High School moved into a temporary location while a new build-
ing is under construction. The new 5,000 + square foot building is expected to be completed in
early 2018 and will accommodate up to 40 students. It will have four classrooms including a
science lab, four bathrooms, and office space. In the center of the school, there will be a family
room/kitchen where students can study together, do homework, cook and eat together.
The building is designed to utilize solar energy which would include the installation of a solar
dashboard that would allow students the opportunity to monitor and control the school’s energy
source. In addition, the building will have radiant floor heating which will significantly reduce
the amount of energy needed to heat the building.
The current building (trailer) has been used since the 1990’s and has had over 250 students
come through its front doors. Students describe the Heartland experience as safe, comfortable,
and almost like a second home. It is the goal of everyone involved to maintain that feeling in
the new building. Angie Hersel, who has been with the program from the beginning loves the
quote, “There are no bad days, some are just better than others.” She followed up by stating,
“With that in mind and thinking of the new building maybe I should change it to, ‘All good
things in life are worth waiting for’ or ‘All good things come to those who wait..”’
“For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the
Pack.” Rudyard Kipling.

Would you rather live with no internet or no cell phone?
Would you rather have a rewind button or a pause button on your life?
Would you rather find true love or find $10,000,000?

Student Survey
We gave our fellow classmates a student survey of “would you rather” questions and these are the
results.
