OUR MISSIONTo improve the quality of your life through patient-centered care.

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCEAs an independent, nonprofit hospital, Enloe Medical Center has a long history of gathering support from our community as we work to enhance equipment, programs and facilities that benefit our region.

The financial obstacles we face become more challenging each year as government reimbursements for the care we provide to our largest population continues to shrink, while the costs of equipment, medications, labor and physician recruitment continue to rise.

Your generous support helps us continue to provide high-quality care close to home. You make all the difference for the patients coming through our doors — which are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Since writing this annual report, the face of our region has changed dramatically. The destruction of property and the

disruption and loss of lives is staggering and leaves us nothing short of breathless.

All of us are struggling to grasp the long-term impacts the Camp Fire will have on our family, friends, colleagues and neighboring communities. Like so many of you, Enloe Medical Center stands ready to serve during this challenging time.

In addition to serving the needs of patients and their families, we have activated plans to support and assist more than 350 Enloe employees, affiliate employees, medical staff, and volunteers whose homes are in the fire area. As of this writing, we have confirmed that more than 280 of our employees have lost their homes. Unfortunately, that number may grow in the days ahead.

We find hope in the outpouring of love and support mobilizing across the north state. So many organizations have established relief funds to support victims of the fire. The Enloe Foundation has redirected our fundraising focus for the time being to our Camp Fire Relief Fund to assist the hundreds of Enloe caregivers with immediate needs for shelter, food and everyday living supplies. Additionally, we continue to support the patients in our care with immediate needs as we have always done through our Compassion Fund.

The loyal support of all of you throughout these many years has enabled Enloe Medical Center to become the truly extraordinary organization that it is today. In this report, you will read how your financial support has affected the health of our region. I hope you are proud of the accomplishments you have helped make possible.

Thank you,

Mike Wiltermood, President & CEOEnloe Medical Center

THANK YOU FOR SHARING OUR VISION

As another eventful year ends and we reflect on the accomplishments achieved

as an organization, one particular success reminds me very clearly of the important role our community plays in our ability to provide extraordinary care for our region.

In February, Enloe Medical Center was recognized with the prestigious Planetree Gold Certification. The importance of this impressive achievement cannot be overstated, simply because there are fewer than 100 health care organizations worldwide to have reached this pinnacle. Our ascent to Gold Certification was not easy and we did not do it alone.

“More than a decade ago, we stood at a crossroads. We knew we were not living up to our potential as caregivers, and we were not meeting the expectations of our community. Significant change was necessary, and we set about building a new vision for our future, a vision that would require years of work and monumental change.”

These changes modified our culture and our operations to adopt components of a patient-centered health care experience, including the quality of patient-provider interactions, access to information, family involvement, and the physical environment of care. We also modified how we support our staff, created new opportunities for patients and their families to have a voice in the way we deliver care, and improved the ways in which Enloe reaches beyond its walls to care for our community.

This 12-year transformation tested us, opened us to new possibilities and helped us to build stronger relationships. With your steadfast support given through volunteering, constructive feedback and financial gifts, our success in this undertaking became a reality.

In the words of Susan Frampton, president of Planetree International, “The experience of Enloe shows what can be accomplished when a team of deeply committed, supremely innovative and highly driven caregivers take the courageous leap to redefine priorities and reorganize systems to put patients first.” What is truly important is the loyalty with which our community stood by us as this transformation took place, so to Susan’s statement above I would add community supporters as part of our team, because I am certain we could not have accomplished this feat without you. Thank you for sharing our vision and walking with us toward our goal.

On the opposite page, you will read about several other recognitions that distinguish Enloe, both regionally and nationally for quality of care. Each is noteworthy and taken as a whole, point to a level of excellence we hope you take pride in.

Even as we celebrate these achievements, we recognize the financial hurdles we face. The support we receive from our community becomes even more important in our efforts to continue improving our access points and delivery methods, to ensure you and your family receive the local, high-quality care you expect and deserve. Thank you for the loyal and generous support you give by making Enloe Foundation one of your charities of choice.

We wish you another year of joy and health.

Mike Wiltermood, president and CEO, Enloe Medical Center

HELP FROM STRANGERS, FAR FROM HOME

A woman traveling in the middle of the night on a bus from Vancouver to

Los Angeles with her young son suddenly needed emergency care. In great pain, she was sent directly to Enloe’s Emergency Department. After the woman was stabilized, Steven Zlotowski, M.D., and the attending nurses began to piece together the story of how she became stranded in Chico. It was slow and difficult to obtain details due to a mild language barrier with both the mother and son. It became clear that they did not know anyone in Chico and that the relatives were in Vancouver. They did not have a place to go after discharge, nor money for a hotel.Dr. Zlotowski sought out Case Management

for assistance. Ali Keller visited with the mother and son, and in about an hour, procured two train tickets from Chico to Vancouver and a taxi ride to the train station. The two were soon on their way home.

“This was one of my prouder moments for our institution and for appreciation of the outstanding work, resolve, and compassion demonstrated by one of my colleagues.”

- Steven Zlotowski, M.D.

Dr. Zlotowski reflected on the events, saying, “We may never be in a similar situation, but think how it must have seemed to the patient — to be in a strange place with only strangers around, having a language barrier, being responsible for her son, not having the luxury of resources to lean on. The mother must have been quite overwhelmed. Then to have someone like Ali come in with a plan to get them home all with just hours to spare.”

Dr. Zlotowski continued, “In the early morning hours, Ali really changed the trajectory of two lives, and I suspect others connected to these travelers that few will ever know about.

MESSAGES OF HOPE & HEALING

Fall is such a wonderful time of the year. It gives us a lovely break from

the crackling hot days of summer and the chance to throw open our windows and welcome the cool evening air. Turning our thoughts toward the upcoming holidays and the excitement they bring, we find an opportunity to reflect on the good fortune that has blessed our lives.

Among them are the interactions and experiences shared with the generous donors and volunteers who support Enloe Medical Center. These relationships enrich my life in so many ways, and I feel truly blessed to share in them.

“Our supporters understand the financial impact their gifts have on the medical center. They see the improved facilities and the upgraded equipment. They read about the expanded services and programs available to serve their friends and families. They know that by helping to enhance our local hospital, they are caring for their future health.”

More importantly, however, is the way these loyal donors and volunteers enrich the lives of thousands of patients each year. They deliver hope and healing in the midst of crisis, fear and, often, despair. They uplift the caregivers who attend to the body, mind and spirit of our patients.

We are grateful for the trust you have placed in us, and we honor each of you for sharing your hearts of gold with our community.

I am proud of the results the Foundation staff has been able to achieve this year. Guided by an extraordinary team of senior hospital executives and working with a committed group of volunteer board members, the Foundation staff has again exceeded the benchmarks for total funds

raised, efficiency ratio (cost to raise $1) and return on investment. This work is done in an atmosphere of transparency and financial stewardship, with the needs of our patients and the expectations of our donors always top-of-mind.

In the next few months, we will continue our work to finish the $5 million capital campaign to support construction of the Cardiovascular Care Center at Enloe. To date, we have raised over $4.5 million toward our goal, and with the continuing support of a generous community, the new center will become a reality in 2020. Please consider helping us and encouraging others to help as well, as we sprint to the finish line.

I hope you enjoy reading the information and stories presented in this report. But most of all, I hope you recognize your extraordinary role in the successes achieved. With your help, the goals and visions we set for the health of our community become a reality. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Offering Kindness Through ShoesA woman was discharged in the early morning after arriving by ambulance the night before. She tried to board a bus home, but the driver refused her because she was not wearing shoes. Kara Davis, RN, clinical educator, offered a pair of running shoes she had at her desk. They fit perfectly, and the woman was on her way to catch the next bus. Submitted by David Pierce, Volunteer Serviceswww.enloe.org /stories

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

You have heard the phrase before that sometimes “it takes a village” to

accomplish great things. From my seat as chair of the Enloe Foundation Board of Directors, I can tell you that I agree wholeheartedly.

In this case, the village is a diverse group of volunteer community leaders who give their time and talent to guide the work of the Enloe Foundation. We strive to grow relationships between Enloe and our loyal donors, serve as Enloe ambassadors in the community and, of course, provide annual financial support by choosing Enloe as one of our personal charities.

Board members also serve on various subcommittees based on their skills and interests. From donor outreach and appreciation, to fundraising campaign committees, to board governance and nominations, or special events, supporting the Foundation staff in these important activities is fun and engaging.

Our village serves another important purpose as a conduit of information, sharing the successes of the organization and communicating the challenges it faces in meeting the health care needs of a wide geographic region. We also provide feedback to hospital leaders. Overwhelmingly these are stories of courage, strength and excellence.

“We begin each board meeting sharing Stories of Excellence. It is a privilege to hear about the experiences of patients and their family members directly from the source, and with their permission, we relay these messages of gratitude to hospital leaders, who in turn do a wonderful job of recognizing and thanking the caregivers directly involved.”

This method of information sharing is critical to Enloe’s mission to improve the quality of your life through patient-centered care. Hearing these real-life stories also serves as a stark reminder of the importance of the work we are doing to support the hospital, and how closely we are connected to the community it serves. These are the experiences of our friends and neighbors, and we feel a responsibility to do our part to ensure their experience is as positive as it can possibly be.

We are also responsible to the hundreds of donors who entrust their charitable giving to the Enloe Foundation. We take seriously our charge of ensuring financial stewardship, transparency and effective use of the funds in our care. As the financial hurdles facing our locally governed, independent hospital continue to grow, the generosity of our loyal donors becomes increasingly important.

As a board, we know we cannot succeed in this effort alone. A healthy community can only result from the efforts of a much larger

“village,” made up of caregivers, volunteers, business leaders and generous donors, all dedicated to ensuring our local hospital remains strong. On behalf of the entire Enloe Foundation Board of Directors, thank you all for playing your part in this critically important community endeavor.

Mark Kimmelshue, chair, Enloe Foundation Board of DirectorsGiving Kindness

Every day at Enloe, I see examples of kind, patient-centered care, but over the holidays, three Enloe employees demonstrated the true meaning of the Planetree philosophy. A homeless patient came through the ER and was seen by Pete Davis, RN. Pete took it upon himself to spiff up the patient before he was admitted to the Surgical Care Unit. He bathed his feet, cleaned him up and even trimmed his hair. Pete personally brought the patient to the unit, which the patient expressed was deeply important to him. The kindness continued when the charge nurse, Serena Thompson, and the CNA, Lidia Lopez, identified that the patient’s clothes needed to be washed, and they took it upon themselves to launder the clothes. The true meaning of Planetree shone through these three employees.Submitted by Patricia Paddock, RN, Surgical Care Unitwww.enloe.org /stories

ENLOE FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Man’s Best Friend – Kay Kohen, Volunteer Services, worked with Ines Corriea, RN, to bring a very badly hurt older trauma patient — who spent weeks in the ICU — the only thing he wanted: to see his dog. Kay got the necessary approvals, got ahold of the man’s daughter, made sure the dog had the appropriate shots and vaccinations to limit any concerns of infection control, etc. Then she waited in the lobby for the patient’s daughter and dog to arrive, so she could walk them up to his room. When the dog came to the patient’s door, it was the sweetest thing. The dog started whining and the patient began to cry. It was truly a great moment.Submitted by Julie Threet, Volunteer Board | www.enloe.org /stories

JOURNEY TO PATIENT-CENTERED CARE: ACHIEVING GOLD

Judy Sitton, secretary,Enloe Foundation Board of Directors, andConnie Rowe, VP, Patient Care Services

Enloe Medical Center’s 12-year journey of cultural transformation led to Planetree Gold Certification

this year. The designation signifies the best of patient-centered care.

Exceptional leadership was integral in this story of excellence, from Enloe’s Board of Trustees and Foundation Board of Directors, to Enloe’s senior leadership and frontline caregivers. Leadership is the ability to inspire a shared vision enabling others to act.

This leadership and encouragement is evident in everything we do to support our patients, their friends and families, our caregivers, physicians, and donors.

“This achievement is reflective of a tremendous collaboration between our community and our organization as we try to create the best possible environment for healing and wellness,” said Enloe president and CEO Mike Wiltermood.

A detour that changed history To provide some background, in 2006 Betty Dean, RN, chair of the Enloe Board of Trustees, learned about patient-centered care at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Conn. She and her husband, Clyde, were vacationing on the East Coast, and she convinced Clyde to take a quick detour to visit Griffin. Thank goodness for that detour!

When Betty returned from Griffin Hospital, Planetree’s flagship hospital, she brought ideas for improving Enloe. This vision was the catalyst for change.

Before long, a second wave of Enloe representatives made the trip, including Marcia Nelson, M.D., Jan Ellis, RN, Judy Sitton, Attila Kasza, M.D., and Forrest Olson, M.D.

Many moments captured their hearts: valet parking, live piano music in the main lobby, and volunteers and staff greeting guests and offering an escort to their destination. Volunteers fed and talked with patients at the bedside, delivered flowers, consoled with a human touch, and gave spiritual support … and the list goes on. At Griffin, staff and volunteers offered a warm smile, information, support and kindness. Sound familiar? That’s Enloe today, day-in and day-out.

Luckily, we did not have to create this compassionate methodology from scratch. Planetree provided the education, support and practices that helped us move forward.

Caring with authenticity Nine components of Planetree make up the patient-centered care experience. Each taken singularly is powerful, but when used in their totality, they ensure people are supported and have a clinical experience that is personalized, humanized, and demystified.

Over the past decade, we implemented these components to improve care, relationships and communication. Patients felt the difference. Scores on patient experience survey, known as the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), rose from the 2nd percentile in 2006 to the 77th percentile in 2016.

The people who serve at Enloe are the eyes and ears for an anxious patient, a concerned friend to the family in need of understanding and support. They delicately and tactfully know when to be involved and when to step back. Perhaps the caregiver’s greatest role when serving patients is to authentically care.

We thank and appreciate you, as members of the Enloe community. You have helped by modeling the way, keeping us apprised of your needs, sharing in the vision, and providing the means and direction to move forward. Your support, leadership and tenacity to insist on excellence helped make possible our designation as a Gold Certified site.

We honor each of you, with the deepest appreciation for your hearts of gold.

A SNAPSHOT OF PATIENT-CENTERED CARE AT ENLOE

Healing Touch andComplementary TherapiesEnloe provides pet therapy, hand relaxation massage, aromatherapy, Reiki and acupuncture treatments.

SpiritualityEnloe introduced spiritual support volunteers, a meditation room, blessing of the hands and diversity education.

Nutritional and Nurturing Aspects of FoodEnloe offers fresh, local and healthy foods, a robust cafeteria selection, self-selected choices, healthy vending options, and nourishing menus.

Human InteractionEnloe implemented shared decision-making, staff retreats, and employee recognition, support and engagement.

Healing EnvironmentEnloe emphasized the importance of protecting patients’ sleep by implementing quiet time and a sleep menu, changing lab draw times, and using sound-buffering materials in new construction.

Arts and Entertainment Enloe displays scenic artwork and has a volunteer musician program, live piano music, as well as gardens and water features.

Healthy CommunitiesEnloe offers community education and events, such as Walk with a Doc, health fairs and flu clinics, and has made sustainability improvements.

Based on feedback from patients, their family members and health care professionals, Planetree identified core components that are essential to practicing patient-centered

care. Here’s how we’ve implemented these components at Enloe.

Access to InformationEnloe demonstrated this component through shared medical records, a patient portal and pre-procedure classes.

Family InvolvementThis can be experienced at Enloe through 24-hour patient-directed visitation, valet parking, family lounges, care partners, and additional support during end-of-life care

“Every experience can be a great experience. We don’t just look at their disease process; we look at family dynamics, we look at individual needs, what they want out of the experience. It allows the staff the freedom to care for them like the patient wants to be cared for.” Donna Larson, RN,senior director, Nursing Operations

NOT YOUR AVERAGE HOSPITAL

You might be surprised to know that Enloe Medical Center is one of only

2,845 non-governmental, not-for-profit hospitals in the United States. Not every individual receives care from such a hospital, but for the sake of the arithmetic, on average the population served by Enloe would then be 113,802. In reality, Enloe is not an average hospital, neither in terms of the population we serve (we serve three times that average) nor in the level of service we provide (we’re a Level II Trauma Center).

This past year provided an example of Enloe stretching itself to enhance its electronic health record capability, and now we’re undertaking a renovation of the hospital to create a Cardiovascular Care Center. The Enloe Foundation is very near to reaching its goal of $5 million.

“We are grateful that many people in our service area have been philanthropically generous in assisting us to achieve and maintain cutting-edge technology, quality care, and patient-centeredness.”

Reports from those who monitor the hospital industry show a narrowing between revenue and expense, along with increasing debt. Enloe has entered that exact circumstance and this underscores our hope that you will stay with us through the good and bad times. Help us keep the banner high.

I’ll end on a personal note of farewell since retirement awaits me, as does my wife, at the end of this year. My privilege has been to serve for eight years as CFO and experience the unparalleled flourishing of Enloe. The medical center will spare no future effort in the progress and provision of wonderful patient care of which you are a significant contributor. The fact is, few communities are so richly blessed.

Myron Machula, chief financial officer,Enloe Medical Center

Making a ToughValentine’s Day BearableKelsey Wirt, RN, was caring for a patient who had just become a quadriplegic due to a severe motorcycle accident. It was the day before Valentine’s Day, and he was unhappy because he always does something special for his wife, and this year he could not. With the support of co-workers Melissa Smith, RN, and Dawn Larrabee, monitor tech, who went to the store for flowers and a card, Kelsey was able to help the patient continue his tradition of recognizing his wife on Valentine’s Day.Submitted by Cindy Llewellyn, RN, NTSICUwww.enloe.org /stories

YOUR DOLLARS AT WORK SUPPORTING PATIENT-CENTERED CARE

Beyond the Scope of DutyA patient, who had multiple surgeries at UC Davis, was admitted to Enloe’s Emergency Department (ED) from a local skilled nursing facility due to surgical complications. After careful consideration, the doctor determined the patient should return to UC Davis for continuity of care, and arranged transport. When staff learned that the patient’s belongings were still at the skilled nursing facility, Calvin Toohey, ED Tech, immediately stepped in to retrieve them. He returned with all the belongings just in time for the patient’s departure.Submitted by Jennifer Morabito, RN, Emergency Departmentwww.enloe.org /stories

ENLOE FOUNDATION CAMPAIGN UPDATESCardiovascular Care Center At over $4.5 million and growing, our Cardiovascular Care Center Campaign is nearing fulfillment. The Enloe Foundation pledged $5 million in 2015 to help build a state-of-the-art Cardiovascular Care Center inside the main hospital on the Esplanade. The expanded space will provide more treatment areas, newer technologies, improved patient access, and a dedicated family lounge.

Heart & Sole: Run for Wellness With more than 600 registrations and 20 sponsors, this year’s fourth-annual Heart & Sole: Run for Wellness raised over $31,000. This run/walk event provides the opportunity for individuals and families to engage in fun activities designed to inspire healthy living choices.

Enloe Foundation Golf TournamentOur 2017 event raised over $131,000 to help support the Cardiovascular Care Center Campaign and the Golf Nursing Scholarship Fund. Since 1986, this annual tournament has raised over $2.3 million to support Enloe’s programs, equipment and facilities.

Give Where You Live With more than 900 contributing employees, volunteers and medical staff, we raised an astounding $279,862 through our Give Where You Live campaign. Our 28% participation rate is remarkable considering the national average for employee giving is 13%.

A HelpfulC onnectionMy daughter, who has autism, recently broke her arm. The emergency room staff was wonderful. However, she didn’t interact with them. He was able to engage with my daughter and gave her some of the cast material to hold, and he talked in a way that put my daughter at ease as he placed a splint on her arm. Later, when we went to the Ortho-Trauma Clinic for a checkup, we saw another caregiver. He was wonderful, but when he learned that Handerson placed her splint, he asked Handerson to place the hard cast. Handerson walked through the door with a smile, and my daughter’s face lit up. Familiarity is a really big thing for her. He was so accommodating and promised to take her cast off when it was time. The whole team has been amazing, and in my opinion, they all deserve recognition for how well they take care of their patients. WHY I GIVE WHERE I LIVE – Enloe Caregivers Give Back“Enloe is an amazing place to work. There is a culture of wanting to make a difference in the community that is real and authentic. The employees share this purpose, which drives the organization every day. I give to the Enloe Foundation because I am thankful to work for such a special organization that does so much good for our community 24/7.”

- Tony Evans, chief information officer, Information Services

“I was born at Enloe with a variety of health problems and so growing up, I was constantly in and out of the hospital. I don’t know what I would do without such quality care so close to home. I chose to give knowing every little bit helps.”

- Andrea Gleason, marketing assistant, Marketing & Communications

“We have both worked at Enloe for over 18 years. Every day, we see how we impact our community. It is with great pride that we give back to Enloe. It is our small way to help ensure the growth of our medical facilities. Thank you, Enloe!”

- Javier Vaquera, maintenance worker,Engineering, and Maria L. Vaquera, Environmental Services

ENLOE FOUNDATION

When PatientsBecome FamilySo many thoughts and emotions come to mind thinking about my dad’s time at Enloe. The nursing staff was awesome with him. Then there were the ones who stood out even more, going above and beyond. At first, it was very hard to leave at night, but getting to know the nurses and seeing how much they cared about our dad, we began to feel comfortable and trusted he was in good hands. When it came toward the end and emotions were at their peak, we met Hannah Stockmeir, care coordinator in Case Management. She gave us a better understanding of what was happening and what we needed to do. Dad’s doctor, Srinivas Pulagam, M.D., had great patience, professionalism, a big heart and fight. He did not give up on Dad even to the end. The moments after Dad passed, the great staff continued to be there for our family. Thank you to the doctors, nurses, physical therapists, volunteers, valets, and anyone else who met Dad and our family. You are very appreciated and will not be forgotten!Submitted by Michelle August, Cardiovascular Care Unit, on behalf of the patient’s familywww.enloe.org /stories Thank you to the more than 900 employees, volunteers and medical

staff contributing to our Give Where You Live campaign, we raised an astounding $279,862 last year.

Guardian Circle members as of June 30, 2018

Over 26 years ago, Dr. Donald L. and Alice Z. Stoner decided to support our mission with a gift larger than they could make from ordinary income and set up a charitable

remainder trust with the Enloe Foundation. Their generous gift provided lifelong income for them and left a legacy for countless patients who will benefit from it well into the future.

Make world-class health care your gift for tomorrow using these Planned Gift options.

Bequest – A legacy gift for future generations. Suited for just about anyone.

Gift of Securities – Unlocks the value of appreciated assets. Fitting for anyone holding appreciated public stock.

Gift of Retirement Benefits – Make a major gift using 401K or 403B, or IRA assets. Convenient for individuals with high-value retirement assets, with or without heirs.

Gift of Life Insurance – Gifting assets you no longer need. Best for anyone who has excess life insurance coverage.

Donor Advised Fund – Take a tax deduction today, distribute to charities later. Great for those who’d like to make a large gift in a single year to maximize benefits.

Gift of Property – Use appreciated real estate creatively. Favored for those with real estate holdings they no longer use or need.

Charitable Gift Annuity – Participate in charitable giving and receive lifetime income. Useful for elderly individuals seeking stable, lifelong annual income.

Charitable Remainder Trust – Receive a fixed income or hedge against inflation. Advisable for those with appreciated assets (such as property or stock) that are marketable but not producing sufficient cash flow.

Making a lasting impact with a planned gift is easier than you may think and can expand your philanthropic goals exponentially. If you would like to learn how Planned Giving could make a difference in your life today and support our work for tomorrow, contact the Enloe Foundation at (530) 332-4550 – we’d love to talk with you.
