MEMBER SPOTLIGHT BAYLAND BUILDINGS, INC P.O. Box 13571 Green Bay, WI 54307 http://www.baylandbuildings.com (920) 498-9300

Ironically, Bayland’s first office was actually a converted laundry room, they didn’t even have their own building. However, before long they successfully moved into their first self-constructed office in Green Bay. Founder and President, Steve Ambrosius, established Bayland Buildings, Inc., in February of 1991 with only two employees. Today, they employ over 250 employees and are 100% employee-owned.

Steve forged Bayland on the guiding principle, to treat every person the same, no matter their wealth, social status, C-Level Executive or a crewmember swinging a hammer. He instilled that honestly and integrity will grow this company faster than a large profit on a single project.

As of January 2016, Bayland Buildings, Inc. proudly became 100% employee owned through an employee stock ownership program (ESOP). No matter who you work with you are always working with an owner. This unique relationship empowers each employee of Bayland Buildings, Inc. to fully commit and invest in the success of every project.

Bayland is true design/build general contractor that understands they are building relationships and the importance of listening carefully to the needs of their clients. Learning from their clients, they have continued to add resources which making them more cost effective, more flexible, able to adhere to constricted schedules, and provide superior quality than their competition.

Over the course of their growth, they have added highly qualified professionals such as architects, engineers, and designers. In addition they continue to add skilled crew members, allowing them the ability to self-perform concrete, steel erection, rough & finish carpentry. They continue to extend their reach and position as an industry leader by acquiring ownership in markets such as, a steel fabrication and excavation. These combined resources have allowed them to increase quality, reduce costs and hit deadlines better than their competition.

Most recently, Bayland Buildings, Inc. hit a long-term goal of exceeding $100 Million in sales. The achievement not only marked a new milestone in their history but also solidified their direction as a company, with 70% of those sales from repeat clients.

“Bayland has never hit this level of sales in our history and it is a testament to their dedicated employee/owners! Everyone is committed to providing quality solutions while creating long-term partnerships” said CEO Abe Farley. “That’s why so much of our business is repeat customers.”

The “Great Recession” was a challenge for every industry and it was no stranger to the construction industry and to Bayland Buildings, Inc. As area manufacturers downsized and held back on their growth, new construction projects reduced dramatically in NE Wisconsin. Besides the overall volume decrease they a saw in influx of competition within

their target markets. Larger contractors began chasing their larger projects and small & housing contractors competed for their smaller projects. To keep their crews working, many of the leadership team took pay reductions and overhead costs were reduced. Overall they made the required changes in order to adjust to the market, close sales and support their employees as best as possible.

They are still bullish on the economy through 2019 and if January is an indicator of the remainder of the year they will significantly increase 2018 sales. However, they are predicting a slowdown coming some time in 2020/2021. Foxconn is one factor that leaves questions of its overall impact to the Wisconsin construction industry. The amount of work with the development of their facilities as well as, the surrounding the community, may reduce the level of competition in NE Wisconsin.

Some of the markets they serve such as multi-tenant, assisted living, warehouse / distribution and manufacturing they feel will remain steady. However, retail & office continue to fluctuate as evident by recent bankruptcies.

The construction profession has its challenges with their current unemployment rate and lack of young people entering the trades. They are working with a number of area high schools and tech programs to improve this situation, but it does take time to have an impact.

As far as industries trends there are advancements in materials, energy efficiencies, etc. and Bayland stays on the forefront of those advancements. One area in particular that they see interesting advancement is on the design side with virtual design. Creating 3D virtual buildings that clients actually experience a preconstruction walk-thru of their future building. They are not at that point yet but they are researching that technology. They do have 3D BIM software and they can show clients their buildings with 3D view from a computer.

One of their most exciting recent projects was the Menominee Nation Arena in Oshkosh. They designed and built an 83,000 SF state-of-the-art sports and entertainment facility in 7-months. This facility helped bring the Milwaukee Bucks Development team “the Herd” to our region, bringing an increase in jobs and tourist money.

They are members of the Heart of Valley Chamber for several reasons. First, are the business connections and the relationship building opportunities. They are a service provider therefore for their sales process begins and ends with building relationships. Second, is information and educational resources. Third, is connection to the Heart of the Valley communities and their ability to support this community through events and sponsorships. “I personally and professionally have benefitted tremendously from being a member of the chamber!” - Dean Hunt, VP of Marketing and Business Development

If your goal, resolution or word of 2019 is focus, here are some tips to set up your smartphone to curb unwanted distractions.

Manage your notifications – every app wants to send you a notification and it takes time and attention to check and clear those constant alerts. Dedicate some time this New Year to determining

if you need every alert that comes to your phone. You can adjust notification settings in iOS and Android by visiting the Settings menu and tapping Notifications.

Use do not disturb – whether you’re working on a deadline or want to eliminate distractions near bedtime, the do not disturb feature can stop any notifications from making noise and lighting up your screen. Both iOS and Android allow you to set exceptions to that rule (like to allow phone calls from specific contacts) and let you schedule time frames to automatically enable do not disturb.

Check your usage – sometimes you’re not fully aware of just how much your smartphone may get you off track or what

apps suck your time. Apple added Screen Time to iOS in 2018 to let you easily check your usage. Not only can you see how many times you pick up your device, which may surprise you, but also exactly how much you use specific apps. It even breaks it down into categories of social network-ing, entertainment and productivity. Android does not natively have this feature just yet, but there are a host of apps that can be used.

Set limits – once you’ve found the apps that may consume more of time than you like, you can consider setting limits. Screen Time will let you set limits or specific downtime where certain apps aren’t available.

Smartphones are an incredible tool, but focusing during work or personal time with family and friends is important. Evaluating your settings and notifications can help you stick to your priorities.

The Fox Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to welcome two new additions to our staff. Lorna Stephens has been hired for the position of Visitor and Administrative Services Coordinator and Mackenzie Utpadel has been hired as Digital Marketing Specialist. Founders of Settlers bank, Dave Fink and Tom Spitz were recently named Executive(s) of the Year in Madison by ‘In Business Magazine. They have consistently achieved a 15 percent annual growth. Spitz and Fink manage Settlers bank in a strategically opportunistic way, which led them to open a location in Appleton in August 2018. It is the third location for the bank and the second market; the Appleton market was chosen because the bank already had been doing business there for 10 years, and management recognized there were unmet business needs in the Fox Valley. In addition, they found the right person to lead the Appleton market or, rather, Mike Waters found them. Staffing it properly began with the selection of a local leader, and in a judgment call that was part good fortune and part due diligence, they hired Waters, a Fox Valley banker who wanted to open his own financial institution. After meeting with him several times, Spitz and Fink offered him an opportunity to accomplish the same goal but under the Settlers bank name. Bayland Buildings, Inc. is pleased to announce being selected as the General Contractor on the following projects: * El Maya Mexican Restaurant, for their new DePere location. The restaurant is estimated to be complete by the end of January. * Metalcraft for their Mayville facility expansion. The 6,300sq/ ft addition is estimated to be complete by April 2019. * One Barrel Brewing and Wild Tomato Pizza for their new Door County location. The new restaurant will be opening in Egg Harbor this spring. * Dawn’s Fresh Foods, a manufacturer and distributor in Portage, for their 32,000 sq. ft. addition that is estimated to be complete by August 2019. * Country Villa, an Assisted Living facility in Omro, for their facility expansion. The addition is estimated to be complete by September 2019.. * Emerald Bay Retirement Community, for their Howard facility expansion. The 28-unit addition is estimated to be complete by October 2019.
