1.) Approach lucrative times strategically.

With the recent flush of finances many producers in the beef industry are experiencing, it’s easy to become complacent and forget tougher times will resurface at some point.

Now is the time to take charge of your operation’s financial success and reinvest into the operation so profit may be maintained in a tougher economic environment. If needed, now is the time to make shifts in management

practices that may require significant capital expenditures.2.) Commit to

better recordkeeping.Update your records at least weekly,

or better yet, every couple of days. Remember, you can’t manage what you don’t measure.

For example, the Iowa Beef Center Feedlot Monitoring Program software (www.iowabeefcenter.org/feedlotmonitor.html) is an excellent tool to help keep records on not

only production costs, but also health, feed inventories, close-outs and benchmarking.3.) ID improvements that will have

the most impact.Although a lot can be accomplished

in a year, it’s important to keep your resolutions focused and identify where your organization needs the most improvement, and which steps will have the greatest impact on your enterprise and its profit now and in the future.4.) Attend at least one

educational event. We all need to be lifelong

learners. Technology is progressing at an exponential rate, and the beef industry is not immune to the progress. This progress is constantly challenging the way we think about our management schemes, so keep learning. There are many educational conferences and meetings throughout the Heartland. Check out the trade and cattle magazines for locations, dates and times for these events.

5.) E nsure successful expansion. With current cattle prices

higher than in previous years and feed prices reduced, talk of expansion has filled the air. Is it time to expand your cow herd? How can it be done profitably given the high cost of breeding stock replacements?

The Iowa Beef Center has educational materials in place to help ensure successful heifer devlopment and retention in this expansion era. Visit w w w . i o w a b e e f c e n t e r . o r g /h e i f e r d e v e l o p m e n t . h t m l for more information.6.) Better understand your cattle’s

health needs. With current prices of cattle,

death and even simple illness resulting in suboptimal growth can be ill-afforded. Work with your veterinarian on a herd health plan that suits your particular needs and become familiar with new pharmaceutical products available.7.) Minimize feed losses and

evaluate rations.

Even in times of increased profitability, better management of feed losses and costs should not be overlooked.

Reinvesting profits into new storage methods and feeding equipment can reduce the amount of feed lost, providing huge returns when feed costs go back up (it’s not a matter of if, but when prices will rise).

In addition, evaluating feed-stuffs being used in your nutritional program provides opportunities for added savings.

Using ration balancing programs such as BRANDS (www.iowabeefcenter.org/software_brands.html) and taking a closer look at the use of the changing ethanol coproducts ( ht tp : / / t i ny u r l . c om / m r u 5 au q ) can prove financially rewarding.8.) Become a better steward

of the land.Whether a feedlot or cow-calf

operator, make sure you understand your operation’s effect on the land on or near your operation, and educate yourself on possible measures you can enact, from utilizing alternative grazing systems to proper nutrient management tools.

The SOURCEis Coming

The SOURCE, an avenue for advertising your cattle operation

or herd sires, will be included with the November/December Heart Beat. It’s our goal to have a large number of breeders, commercial cattlemen and

businesses participate in this advertising venue.Advertising rates have been discounted for the SOURCE. We hope

you take advantage of this super deal and advertise your operation or business. The SOURCE is distributed to everyone on the Heart Beat mailing list, approximately 5,000 readers, and will also be set out on the Heartland display table at all Limousin events.

The rates for the SOURCE are: ¼ page $150, ½ page $250, and a full-page ad is $450. These ads are all printed in full color at no extra charge.

For more information, contact Dean Summerbell, Executive Secretary of the Heartland Limousin Association, at 612/963-3799 or [email protected]. You can also talk to any Heartland Limousin Association board member to place an ad.

Mary Quigley, production manager for the Heart Beat, will help with the design/layout of ads or you can send the ad camera ready. You can contact her by calling (405) 260-3775, cell (405) 706-6279 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Watch for the SOURCE in the November/December Heart Beat.

Now is the time to start planning for the 2016 National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colorado. The dates for this year’s Limousin activities are January 10-14. There are many events during these days, including: shows, a sale, Genetics On Ice benefit auction and banquet, a social and the NALF annual meeting.

The DoubleTree by Hilton Denver has two locations on Quebec Street. The Stapleton North location at 4040 Quebec St. has reserved a block of rooms under the Heartland Limousin Association for a rate of $97 plus tax. This rate INCLUDES two free breakfast buffet meals per room.

Reservations must be made by November 15, 2015, to qualify for this rate. One important change that has been made this year—in order to get a more accurate number for

our group, the hotel is requiring you pay for your first night when making the reservation.

You can make your reservations by calling (800) 222-8733 or (303) 321-6666, you must ask for the HLA block of rooms. The Heartland website (www.heartlandlimousin.org) will also have a link for making reservations. If you need to CANCEL for whatever reason, please call Dean Summerbell at (612) 963-3799 so the rooms can remain in our block.

The DoubleTree by Hilton Denver South, located at 3203 Quebec St., is the NALF headquarters for the NWSS. Their rate is $107 plus tax and reservations must be made by December 6, 2015, or until the group lock is sold out, whichever comes first. Reservations can be made online through the NALF website.

Page 4: Heart Beat Sept/Oct 2015

Our summer has been devoted to junior field days and the

beginning of the state fair run. We managed to take in six state field days, the Heartland Regional and the annual NALJA summer show.

As usual, the old adage concerning judges “One person’s opinion on one day” proved true again. We observed champions on one day not making it out of class on another day. Beverly and I counted that happening at least three

times so juniors, do not be discouraged. We did not see many Limousin cattle that did not deserve to be shown. We congratulate the exhibitors who took time away from work, extra activities, and daily duties to show their cattle whether it was Tulsa, OK; Sedalia, MO; Huron, SD; Paola, KS; or Fairmont, MN. We are very proud of the juniors for their accomplishments.

We also saw a lot of new faces showing Limousin. That is very heartening to see new juniors and the continued support of juniors from previous years.

Summer has also brought annual challenges for keeping cattle in good condition. At our home, the temperature fluctuates at least 20 degrees from 90 degrees one day to 72 the next, then back to extreme heat and humidity. It’s hard to manage and maintain animal health and condition under those weather challenges.

The price of feeders has been good. They may be off their market high, but still not bad. The fall predictions are favorable for prices, which will keep a positive attitude and excitement in the beef industry.

The fall season is upon us and Beverly and I are looking forward to September. This month will end the state fair runs and begin the sale season. From most indications, the upcoming sales should be strong as Limousin continues to gain acceptance in the beef industry.

It’s that time of year again when reservations are open for the National Western Stock Show in Denver. The Limousin activities begin January 10, 2016. The DoubleTree North has again extended a block of rooms to the Heartland Limousin Association, which is where we have been for a number of years.

We were disappointed to encounter an increase in the room rate, but managed to retain the ever-popular breakfast for two people per room. For the first time in five years, we extended our search for a suitable hotel within an acceptable distance to the Yards with shuttle service. After

searching some 125 hotels in which bids were requested, only three had a lesser rate than the one quoted at the DoubleTree North, and they were twice the distance from the Yards with not nearly the breakfast items on the menu.

As a result, we signed an agreement with the DoubleTree North for the quoted $97 rate per room per night, but we did not reserve as many rooms as in the past due to a guaranteed 80% occupancy rate. The Heartland Limousin will be responsible to fill the 80% occupancy rate, which is a financial responsibility if they go unused due to cancellations.

The major change this year is that with each reservation, the first night must be paid when reserving the room and will be non-refundable. In 2014, the Heartland filled 201 nights, but had 90 nights cancelled. If you reserve one of the Heartland rooms and need to cancel, please let Dean Summerbell, know and I’ll try to fill them. Last year we had a waiting list we could have filled with Heartland members, but because the cancellations were done through the National Reservations Center, the rooms went into the general reservation were not given back to the HLA.

I want to thank Stephanie Cavenee of Cavenee Design for her work the last seven years as the graphic designer for the Heart Beat. She did a great job and we are indebted for her services. Under her artistic design, the paper made a dramatic change from when we began in 2001. It went from newspaper print and black/white to a glossy magazine printed in full color. We wish Stephanie well as she continues to build her business.

We welcome aboard our new graphic design staff. Mary Quigley and Ricki Rookstool of Guthrie, OK, will handle our design of the Heart Beat and any other publication needs of the HLA. We feel very fortunate to have them on our team and will look forward to continued great service publishing the Heart Beat.

Lean Beef is Heart-HealthyExtra lean ground beef—that which

is at least 96% lean—has been certified by the American Heart Association to use the Heart-Check mark on packaging and marketing, the Beef Checkoff Program announced.

Extra lean beef options that meet the American Heart Association’s requirements for heart-healthy foods and are certified to display the Heart-Check mark include: Extra Lean Ground Beef (96% lean, 4% fat); Bottom Round Steak (USDA Select grade); Sirloin Tip Steak (USDA Select grade); Top Sirloin Petite Roast, Boneless (USDA Select grade); Top Sirloin Strips (USDA select grade); Top Sirloin Filet (USDA Select grade); Top Sirloin

Kabob (USDA Select grade); Top Sirloin Steak, Boneless, Center Cut (USDA Select grade).

“Beef farmers and ranchers like myself share a

common goal: to help consumers make shopping decisions to fit their needs and lifestyles by educating them about the health benefits of their food. To this end we will continue to support valid science to show consumers how extra lean beef is part of a

healthy diet,” said Jo Stanko, a cow-calf operator from Steamboat Springs, CO, and vice-chair of the checkoff ’s nutrition and health subcommittee.

Members of the Fullblood Limousin Alliance (FLA) met July 31 in Springfield, MO. This was held in conjunction with their annual show, which was held at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds in Springfield.

Topics discussed at the meeting were the promotion and marketing of the Fullblood cattle, DNA of cattle, growth of the FLA membership, FLA website and the upcoming sale October 3 at ACH Holdings in Bowling Green, KY, as well as a possible online sale in the spring.

The FLA appreciates the service of James Lucas, president, and Connie Crockett, secretary, for their many years on office. Thank you! Due to other obligations, they have resigned their positions on the board. Billy White of Ft. Gibson, OK, will serve as president and Kim Kosmicke of Cabool, MO, will take over the duties of secretary. Other officers include Randy McCutcheon of St. Joe, AR, vice president and Joe Latendresse, Oologah, OK, treasurer. Rhonda Withers was appointed to take over the board position to fill Randy

McCutcheon’s place and Ron Garrison will take Ken Glazier’s place.

Members of the FLA thank the show committee and volunteers for all their work putting together the National Show. We also want to thank the Moser family and Craig and Rhonda Withers for their financial support of the show.

Mark your calendars to attend the upcoming Stephen Haynes “Foundation Sale” October 3 in Bowling Green, KY. For further information concerning the sale, go to their website www.achhlimousin.com. The next FLA meeting will be held in Kentucky in conjunction with the sale.Congratulations Juniors

Fullblood juniors were given grant money for showing at national Limousin events. Emma Jo Holland, John David Holland and Colt Schrader each received $1,000 for showing at the NALJA show. Six juniors received $250 for taking part in the Fullblood National Show. They are Ashleigh, Lesleigh and Kaeleigh Christiansen, Randy Vandolah, Virgil Hood and Seth Johnson.

This summer has certainly been interesting for me. I decided,

after thinking it over for a long time, I should open a Facebook page for the Heartland Limousin Association. I’ve used computers for a long time, both

during my years in the education field as well as working for the HLA and the Heart Beat newspaper, so I did not think this would be difficult. I discovered that I had a lot to learn!

I have my own Facebook page; however, I use it more as a tool to read

and find out news concerning our members than for me to post things about our family. I haven’t even posted photos, just typed a few news items from time to time. I finally got brave enough to post photos of the champions and reserve champions from the Heartland Regional Show. It took me almost two days, but I was so proud once I finally accomplished the task.

Setting up the HLA Facebook page took several e-mails and messages from friends as well as a couple of trips to Best Buy to visit with the Geek Squad before I finally had the page “up and running.” Since it was a business page, it was a little different than my own page. I guess one thing I’ve learned is that I am

never too old to master new skills. I was amazed at how quickly the staff at the Geek Squad could click and find exactly what I needed, install it, and explain what to do on the page.

Please feel free to send news items and photos for the HLA Facebook page. Dean and I travel to many events; however, we know interesting things happen at other times than the official Limousin activities. You can send them to my e-mail at: [email protected].

I hope you will check out the HLA Facebook page, if you have not already done so. Click “like” and invite friends to “like” the page. Our goal is to spread the word about our

great breed and the people who raise the cattle.

Members of the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA) gathered in Paola, KS, the weekend of May 9-10, 2015, for the field day, social and meeting. The activities took place at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in conjunction with the Johnson County Livestock Show.

The Limousin juniors and their parents worked in the concession stand Saturday, May 9, selling food and beverages as a fundraiser for their association. They appreciated the donation of food and beverages from Price Chopper. Their hard work paid off making $500 for the junior association.

Saturday evening the KLBA members, friends and family gathered for a social and dinner. Thanks to the families who brought salads, desserts and other dishes for the beef dinner.

Members of the junior association held their meeting and planned for the NALJA show in Tulsa, OK. They discussed the color for their tee-shirt,

the design and logo, and the color for the halters.

Sunday morning the KLBA members held their annual meeting prior to the field day show. A variety of topics were discussed, along with an election for members of the board of directors and officers.

The main topic of discussion was the possibility of holding a seminar and social for Limousin breeders and commercial cattlemen in November. After much deliberation, it was decided that it would be held in Manhattan November 14, 2015. Breeders were encouraged to invite their customers to attend this informative, educational, and social event.State Fair

Brewer Farms Serves Bratsat RAGBRAI

Brewer Family Farms Inc. of Dallas Center, IA, spent a week in July serving brats to the participants of RAGBRAI, a week-long bike ride across the state of Iowa. This year the ride started at the Missouri River in Sioux City and ended at the Mississippi River in Davenport with stops at six other towns along the way.

Joe and Brenda, along with Joe’s parents, Dan and Linda, and friends worked from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. feeding the hungry riders. It was a busy week for the Brewer family, because they had to tear down at the end of the day, load everything in the cattle trailer, and set off for the next stay, only to do it all over again the next day.

They sold a variety of skinless brats, including Bacon Cheddar, Plain, Jalapeño Hot Cheese and Hawaiian. Throughout the week they estimated they sold approximately 5,200 brats.

The riders enjoyed beautiful weather for their ride; however, there was one day when it was hot

and humid, typical Iowa weather in the summer.

Brenda said, “The people you meet on RAGBRAI are great and everyone had a wonderful time.”

Joe Brewer, the brats master.

SOUTH DAKOTA SELECTS BEEF AMBASSADOR

The South Dakota Beef Ambassador competition took place during the Summer Spotlight Show in Huron. Kaley Nolz, daughter of Dave and Peggy Nolz, of Mitchell continued the winning ways, joining her sisters Amanda and Courtney who also were state Ambassadors.

Kaley will represent the state in the senior division (ages 17-20) at the National Beef Ambassador Contest September 25-26 in Denver, CO. She also won the junior division (ages 13-16) back in 2010, the same year her sister, Courtney, won the senior division. Her oldest sister, Amanda, received the highest award being named National Beef Ambassador in 2006.

She is a student at South Dakota State University studying Ag Business. Her ultimate career goal is to become a lawyer.

South Dakota News…SD Juniors Take Part in Spotlight Show

The 2015 South Dakota Summer Spotlight Show was held July

23-26 at the state fairgrounds in Huron. The Limousin Junior Show, July 25.

The fairgrounds was a busy place with the Beef Ambassador Contest, the livestock shows including breeding and market goats, cattle, market lambs and sheep and pigs. There was also a Livestock Skill-A-Thon and Team Fitting Competition.

Following the cattle shows on Saturday, the selection of the Top Five Breeding Heifers and Market Animals was held.

There was one major change to this year’s show. The 4-H Livestock Judging Contest, which has been held during the Spotlight Show, was switched from this weekend in July to September 19 in Brookings. It will be held at the South Dakota State University Animal Science Arena. Joshua Cribbs, SDSU Livestock Judging Teams coach says there are several reasons for the move. One of the major reasons for the change is this will allow the

juniors to focus only on judging. As a result, more time can be spent on the learning aspect following the judging competition.SPOTLIGHT SHOW RESULTS

John Zilverberg Competes in National Senior Games

John Zilverberg, 101, of Highmore, SD, competed in the National Senior Games held in Minneapolis, MN. He is the oldest athlete in the competition, that ended July 15, 2015.

The retired rancher competed in discus, shot put, javelin, hammer throw and bowling events in the 100-plus age group. Zilverberg says he always tries to bring home gold medals. He received a gold in the hammer throw and bowling; silver in the shot put, discus and javelin.

Zilverberg took part in his first Senior Games in 1985. He says he can’t do any running and jumping events because one of his legs gave out, but he exercises to keep his arms in shape. He turned 102 August 2.

John also enjoys bowling and he practices once a week, catching a ride to the nearest bowling alley, a 98-mile round trip.

He was born in rural South Dakota in 1913, he lived during the Great Depression; and when he was 21 he took a job for 50

cents pitching manure. John signed up for the Marines after Pearl Harbor. He has lived through 17 presidents.

According to John, the secret to a long life is good genes but also keep active. When he was younger he enjoyed going to dances. He cautioned you should not sit in your rocking chair and quit because you’ll never make it that way. He went on to say you should get out and do something. “If you’re honest and work hard, I think you’ll usually get along pretty well.”

Burgers and steaks at The Cannery Public Market, the farm’s new restaurant, will showcase Limousin beef from the farm, which has a herd of 40 thus far. They feature the tender and flavorful beef cuts they get from their Limousin cattle.

Executive chef L.J. Weber, formerly with Plae Bistro in Green Bay, heads the culinary team. Among the many items on the menu are burgers, prime rib sandwiches, and Caprese salad

with beef tenderloin. Breakfast will be served on the weekends.

Besides restaurant dining, they also sell local products and grab-and-go gourmet meals. Not only do the meals include the meat, but also the seasoning, a side dish and simple instructions for preparing the meal later.

States With the Most FarmsThis information was written by

Rob Cook and published in Beef2Live July 10, 2015.

In the article, Cook reported that the United States has a total of 2.1 million farms. He ranked the states, according to the number of farms, from 1-50.

A farm is defined as “any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the year.” Government payments are included in sales.

Ranches, institutional farms, experimental and research farms, and Indian Reservations are included as farms. Places with the entire

acreage enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP), and other government conservation programs are also counted as farms.

Texas has the most farms in the United States followed by Missouri and Iowa. Listed are the rankings for Texas followed by the Heartland states:

Rank Number % of U.S.#1 Texas 245,500 11.78#2 Missouri 97,700 4.69#3 Iowa 88,000 4.22#9 Minnesota 74,000 3.55#10 Wisconsin 69,000 3.31#12 Kansas 61,000 2.93#17 Nebraska 49,100 2.36#28 South Dakota 31,700 1.52#29 North Dakota 30,300 1.45
