It happens. Brain cells communicate with electrical impulses and anythingelectrical can misfire, especially when exposed to harmful substances. Thehuman brain can even short circuit, as in the case of a seizure. When themechanism goes wrong it changes the whole world for the sufferer and itseems that it can’t be turned off such as in Fibromyalgia, RSD, Dystonia, un-resolved or unexplainable Chronic Pain Syndromes, Alzheimers and Parkin-sons.

What you may not realize is that so many of the chronic ailments thatplague people today come from chronic misfiring of circuitry as the brainattempts to communicate with and regulate the other organs in the body. When the human wiring system is compromised, the human being com-promised. Proper communication cannot occur and this is what leads to or-gans and tissue going haywire. The result? You name it: autoimmunedisorders, organ failure, chronic pain, fatigue, weakness, vertigo, metabolicissues, etc… the list is endless. The chronic health issues of our time beginin the brain.

This is why I have found the work of Dr. Gilbert Jaudy to be of such inter-est over the years. Having been a patient and interviewed many of his pa-tients, I know Dr. Jaudy’s Functional Neurology treatments tap intosomething deeper than any other alternative health treatment. Here aresome highlights from our recent conversation.

HT: What makes Functional Neurology treatments different from con-ventional type of treatments, it all deals with the nervous system, right?

Dr. Jaudy: Through Functional Neurology we are able to measure the effi-ciency of the neurological pathways that we affect. With our uniquemethod of testing, we know when the healing has occurred and the path-ways are clear. Functional Neurology treatment outcomes are measured byexamination of function of the nervous system. The bottom line is themeasurement of what was done. For instance if a random procedure or

therapy is done and we are not able to measure neurologically what hap-pened in the brain, then we are not able to tell if we were helpful.

HT: How do you know the treatment is effective?

Dr. Jaudy: We have several types of testing. We use specific computerequipment and specific testing equipment for example to monitor the di-lation and reaction of pupils to light, either direct or indirect. We are ableto measure different activities that give us immediate response to what thebrain is doing. We use clinical methods which gives us the ability to see thehow the nervous system recovers and how it responds to the application.

We test, re-test, monitor, and measure before and after each treatment ap-plication. The control system — the nervous system — is the central organ-izing authority; measured by sophisticated Brain-Based ComputerizedTechnology, including EEG, EMG, and autonomic nervous system re-sponses and measurements.

Nervous system function includes measurements and monitoring changesto the autonomic nervous system (your auto pilot) and somatic motor func-tion before and after each application evaluating the end organ function. There are many measurable variables such as heart rate, respiration, motoroutput of muscles, EEG and EMG analysis, sensory testing, posture, neuro-logical reflexes are used to determine if a functional loss is present.

A functional loss represents altered/impaired nervous system performance. If a functional loss is present, it is then determined WHERE the loss stemsfrom, such as brain, cerebellum, peripheral nerves, etc. People tend tothink the back, neck, joints, and limbs as separate body parts but they areabsolutely connected and controlled by their neurological origin in the“central computer” which is the brain.

HT: So, that’s how you get such profound results. You just keep workingwith the patient until you can measure the result you want. There is noguesswork involved.

Dr. Jaudy: Yes. There is no “random” in Functional Neurology. There isno “let’s do this and then see if you feel better.” We know when we do anapplication and measure the outcome if we are on the right pathway, andif the patient will react favorably. The parameters that are assessed tell usif the patient is going to do well or not do well. The treatment is brokeninto phases and you are tested, pre-tested, and post-tested as you gothrough many phases of applications in just one treatment session andeach subsequent treatment application is dependent on the previous find-ing. That is how we get results in one to three visits. When patients com-ment it’s a miracle, it’s actually a clinical expectation. They say “Wow! I’veonly had one or two treatments” but it isn’t a quick fix, it’s a real fix. Wehave created neurogenesis or neuroplasticity, likened to a jump start on aninternal connection in the brain which will reflect to the entire system atthe speed of light. It keeps going. It is exponential.

HT: So, you can identify the areas in my brain that are misfiring and

Raw RevelationsRevealing Nature's Ingredients for Amazing Health!

Raw Revelations started with a revelation about the healing power of raw, living foodsand nutrition. With a mission to improve our health, we started growing wheat grassand sunflower greens with ocean water, gardening, and wild foraging. We use herbsand superfoods to create delicious and satisfying raw snacks like our famous Kalechips.

The pure enthusiasm and passion we felt from this vibrant lifestyle developed into abusiness that reveals the most nutritious and healing materials from around the world.Since we started in 2007, we have grown from a single farmers’ market stand to 5farmers’ markets in multiple counties, a website for online ordering, and a Murrieta-based storefront equipped with a tonic bar and health coaching services.

How Raw Are You?

With the name Raw Revelations, some people may assume that we are strict rawfoodists or have a particular strict protocol for how a diet should be. In reality, thereis no one correct diet protocol for everyone, but there are simple truths.

Increasing the consumption of food in its whole, raw form is going to be a good ideafor just about everyone. When a person starts eating a diet high in whole, raw foods,it has such a positive impact on their health that they often consider it a Revelation!

The main benefit of raw foods is detoxification. The enzymes, fiber, and living watercontent within raw food enables the body to do some much needed house cleaning. The safest way to detoxify your body is to eat more raw food. It’s that simple!

The mistake we find some people make is staying on a high raw plant diet for toolong, which can bring dampness or cold into the system or create a nutrient defi-ciency. Raw Revelations understands the delicate balance of ones diet to maintainoptimum function of the mind, body, and spirit. We embrace and utilize all dietaryphilosophies in our products, from Ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic understanding, tograin-free paleo, macrobiotics, and the raw vegan movement.

How Wild Are You?

Another "Revelation" we have had is understanding the importance of wild foods.Colin Buchanan, Owner, loves the outdoors and is always exploring wild edibleswhen backpacking or hiking. Wild foods have not experienced hybridization fromcenturies of selective breeding and human farming.

Wild foods don't need to be irrigated or sprayed with pesticides to survive. We striveto source as many wild foods and herbs as possible, from our Wild Cacao Powder ofthe Ecuadorian Andes, to Wild Turmeric from India. Many of our best selling prod-ucts contain wild crafted foods, such as our MSM Morning Mix, Bag of Tricks, Heav-enly Hot Chocolate, Coffee Fix, Wild Vitamin C and Maca.

Wild foods have an amazing genetic diversity of different nutrient compounds andoffer a great reference for our own DNA to optimally express good genes. Wild foodscan adapt to much larger amounts of stress by producing various saponins, alkaloids, sterols, polysaccharides, and other compounds that can be used by the body to dealwith all types of stress.

How can Raw Revelations be of service to me?

Our mission is to bring optimal health and wellness to the local community by meansof education through our knowledgeable sales team, health coaching, and weeklyworkshops.

Our Tonic Bar is open from 10-6, Tuesday through Friday. We are also at the follow-ing farmers’ market locations: Temecula, Poway, Hillcrest, Leucadia, and La Jolla eachand every weekend.

You can always connect with us online at rrsuperfoods.com and order through our web-site. Come join us at our tonic bar for a healing warm tonic latte, our signature choco-late shake or even a wild blueberry ice cream. We look forward to supporting you throughyour healing journey and creating the possibility to thrive. Please see their ad above.

Living in SicknessContinued from page 2

work on those areas so that chronic conditions resolve and the body canfunction properly again?

Dr. Jaudy: Absolutely. Regardless of the condition you present with, thebottom line is symptoms can have no end. You can start with one condi-tion then that migrates into two and then ten and then fifteen. As thebrain and the other systems start compensating, you start having hiddencomplications and neurons come into play and you get a mess that is gettingdeeper and creating more complex neurological layers.

Functional Neurology allows me to pinpoint the problem area. If I have aproblem in my frontal lobe it is going to affect one thing. If I have a prob-lem in my frontal lobe and my parietal lobe it is going to affect another. IfI have a problem in my frontal lobe and my parietal lobe and my basal gan-glia, the structures in the brain, it is going to affect a different function. IfI have lesions in two, or three, or four areas in my brain then I am goingto create considerable disharmony which will create deficiencies in func-tions in the entire body; the nervous system, the joints, muscles, ligaments, our chemicals, the way we think, the way we walk. Everything will be af-fected.

I don’t blame patients as most have seen 15-20 doctors and think “Oh thisis another one of them, nothing is going to work for me because. I’ve triedeverything under the sun, and I don’t know what this is going to do for me,I’m done.” That is not true. It is not reality. The patient needs to under-stand if the system is not re-wired properly the way it was designed to work, then the link has been missed, and the link can stay missing all your life.Let’s do an exam and find out what is happening so that you don’t have tosuffer for the rest of your life. You don’t have to be crying, crippled, becomedemented, irritable, hyperactive, or have ailments the rest of your life withthe clinical applications of Brain-Based treatments in Functional Neurology.

HT: That is where the healing begins.

Dr. Jaudy: Absolutely, when you reconnect the wires and you start chang-ing on the electrical level life comes back! And so you change also on thechemical and mechanical level. It’s a gift to humanity. It has to be donetargeted. It has to be done specific. It has to be done with the highest stan-dards of analysis. Let me give you an example. If you want to create a spe-cific document on your computer for a specific purpose, you don’t just startpunching numbers, can you?

You can’t do that because the bottom line is you aren’t going to get thedocument. You’re going to get gibberish. But, if you focus on the layoutshape, and purpose you are going to get the document you want. So if youdon’t focus on the proper goal and function of the neurological pathwaysyou aren’t going to get the result you want. It’s going to manifest in ran-dom output and not the result you desire and probably more aggravationof the problem.

It’s because the brain is an electric generator and it generates electricity atthe speed of light. The cells or receptors are electric receptors—how longdoes it take you when you go into your bedroom to get light from theswitch?

HT: Instant?

Dr. Jaudy: Instant. And this is the speed that we can see the results. Whenreceptors or cells in the brain connect and start talking to each other elec-tricity comes back very quickly.

Whereas before the chain is going to keep going and going until this organ-ism, which is the human body, begins to disintegrate. It’s going to fallapart.

The falling apart for patients is very, very emotional. It can go on, beforehumans completely collapse, they can sometimes suffer for twenty, thirty, forty or fifty years. I see these cases daily in my practice. Symptoms arenot solved when they are simply masked by medication and more timesthan not can actually increase or emerge in other areas. The modern neu-roscience of Functional Neurology allows trained doctors to use targetedtreatment applications which target specific neural pathways, called neu-ral tracts. Patient-centered diagnoses are completely individualized anddiscovers the roots of your symptoms. Rather than labeling the sources ofyour symptoms with unknown or unexplained phenomena, a patient-cen-tered diagnosis involves thorough and meticulous techniques that identifyeach of your symptoms systematically. The patient also sees the results forthemselves, not only because the doctor shows them what is happening;but also, because the treatments produce noticeable, positive results. Treat-ment to the very neurological and physiological pathways that make func-tion possible. It’s purely the neuroscience of the wiring and engineering ofhuman bodies. If these facts of function of human life are not addressedthen any disruption in the function and symptoms of a patient will not beuncovered; and they will remain a mystery to, not only the doctor, but thepatient who suffers.

7 Steps to The Good LifeBy Linda PrejeanAs we know, happiness can be fleeting. In fact, at its root, the word ‘happiness’means ‘by chance.’ The same can be said for “The Good Life,” since sometimesyou’re up, and sometimes you’re not. The emotional roller coaster of loss, dis-appointments, and failures can disrupt the best of times.

However, ‘happiness’ has a second meaning: that of a rich, fulfilling, satisfyinglife. It is possible to live in a way that brings you joy in spite of unexpected set-backs. Instead of seeking ‘happiness’ through externals like money, success andbigger things, turn to your inborn and instinctive desire for self-actualization.

Statistics show that although we have doubled the human life span in two cen-

Falling into Winter: How to Help your Body Make the TransitionBy Naomi Calderon, CHHC

As a child of the Midwest, The Fall season always offered one last chance to air out thehouse before cold weather set in. Screens were replaced with storm windows, the lawnmower traded places with the snow blower and shovels. Shorts and t-shirts were washedand packed away, and sweaters were brought out from being stored during the hot, humid months of summer.

We know to spend time preparing our surroundings for the changing seasons, but howoften do we slip into those same seasons without a second thought to preparing ourbodies? Some of us eat seasonally simply because that's all that's available in our localstores, but it's something we do with little intention.

Often people think of cleansing as synonymous with spring, and Mother Nature sup-ports us with some perfect foods that help us to spring to life after a long winter. Butit's also possible to help our bodies transition from the aliveness of spring and the heatof summer so that the slower, more grounded energy of winter works for us instead ofit being something we struggle against.

Think of it this way. Fall takes us into winter, a season of hibernating, recharging. Ourbodies attempt to make this transition as well, but when we continue our normal rou-tine (which usually looks like an over-packed calendar and hectic lifestyle) we push upagainst what nature is calling us to do: slow down, go inward.

Making the transition from the energy of summer into the energy of fall and winter---to get your system “winterized” in a clean, healthy way---is possible with a little plan-ning. It allows you to keep your energy up, remain focused and grounded, bolster yourimmune system and navigate what I like to call the “Holiday Trifecta” with a greater

turies, our ability to find satisfaction and fulfillment has declined.

Dr. Carl Rogers, co-founder of Humanistic Psychology, defined ‘The Good Life’as a natural and continual aim to fulfill your potential, and considered it “aprocess, not a destination.”

Here are 7 Steps to the optimal life you are meant to live:

1. Seek alignment. If your values don’t match your experiences, there is ten-sion, like a rubber band stretched to the breaking point. Your values are a snap-shot of what your heart feels, pointing you in a direction that is meaningful foryou. If you deny or bury the cues, you will feel stressed and off course. Clar-ify your feelings by talking to someone you trust. When you are calm inside, you are congruent, and the better your life will be.

2. Live each moment without manipulating it to fit your needs. Instead, be cu-rious and engaged in what is actually happening. A deep connection to thepresent will keep you from dwelling on the past, or looking anxiously to thefuture.

3. Express your feelings honestly and with kindness. This creates openness soold parts of yourself can come out of hiding and heal. Dr. Rogers believes thebetter you are at expressing your drive toward fulfillment, the better healthyou will have. If you remain frustrated, you are more likely to experience dif-ficulties, displayed in a variety of symptoms.

4. Relax the rigid hold on the way you view reality, and allow for flexibility. You’ve changed your beliefs before, i.e., Santa Claus, and many of your beliefsare just stories. New inspiration rises to the surface like rich cream, giving youmore energy and enthusiasm.

5. Be less defensive by first identifying the threat. When you are on the defen-sive you are not open to change and less resilient emotionally. You might beable to control an experience, but the threat is not removed. The more genuineand honest you are with yourself, the more your feelings can be integrated intothe experience, giving you choices: dwell on it or face it; in other words, youshift your perception and possibly your reality.

6. Commit to something meaningful and take action guided by your values.Internal guidance will move you toward your goals and dreams. In spite ofsetbacks, stay positive and, like footprints on the beach, make one forward stepafter another.

7. Balance comes from acceptance of all your feelings. Dr. Rogers was widelyknown for the “Curious Paradox.” He said, “The curious paradox is when I ac-cept myself exactly as I am, then I can change.”

Genuine self-acceptance can move you to the breathtaking experience of a fullylived life - “The Good Life.”

sense of ease.

Nature provides us with everything our bodies need to live vibrant, healthy lives. Witheach season we're equipped with produce that will support us during that time.

Take oranges. Why might they be plentiful in the middle of winter? Answer: to give usthe boost in vitamin C to fight off colds. (Isn't Mother Nature brilliant?)

So how do you harness this power?Eat what’s seasonal to support your system. Remember the oranges? Here are someother seasonal foods brought to you just in time by Mother Nature: To increase serotoninlevels, which can be in short supply when it’s gray and overcast: yams, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, walnuts and avocado.

To arm against cold and flu season: garlic and ginger (antibacterial properties); andalong with citrus add in cabbage, broccoli, winter squash, and pomegranates for theirvitamins and antioxidants.

Stocks and their heartier counterparts, stews, will help keep your body warmed and intune with the season. Fill them with fresh root vegetables plentiful from the farmer’smarket, and you’ve created a healthy base for your everyday meals. Many healthy recipescan be found for the slow cooker, so that when you get home from a busy day, you canrelax---the work is done for you.

Hint: double or even triple the batch and freeze the extra in mason jars for the comingweeks.

While we may not slow down during the winter months, our bodies intuitively know it’sa season to recharge. Do some planning, be intentional and give your body what itneeds now so when it comes time to fling wide the doors, air out the house and wel-come Spring, you’re ready to greet it, recharged and vibrant.

Deepest Answers Found Through HypnotherapyBy Iah Ka Onga-Ja

Did you ever wonder why you have a fear or phobia, or what is caus-ing your current health condition, of if you had other lifetimes, or ifthere truly is life after death? Did you know that all the answers toyour deepest questions can be found within your own subconsciousmind?

The subconscious mind is a deeper part of your mind that contains thekeys to accessing all the wisdom that you seek. To reach this part ofyour mind, a focused state of meditation will get you there.

Better yet, a skilled hypnotherapist can guide you to access this subcon-scious part of your mind. A hypnotherapist is a therapist who canguide your mind into a focused state of meditation, also called hypno-sis. Hypnos means a dream state. When you dream at night, you arealso accessing your subconscious mind.

A hypnotherapist guiding you in a hypnotherapy session will give youyour own 3D experience within your own mind to see, feel, and knowwhat to believe to the point it truly changes you to the core. Your be-liefs, your fears, your health, and your awareness all will change in aninstant.

There are some hypnotherapists who are capable of guiding you toreach deep spiritual answers of the unknown. For example, to helpyou discover your spirit guide who knows your life purpose, to meet thearchangels to bring you unlimited potential, to meet your power ani-mal who gives you its strengths, to discover heaven and realize life con-tinues after death, to view others realms and dimensions and exploreother existences beyond earth, to visit with your loved ones who havepassed to heal from grief, or even explore the in-between life stage togain deeper knowledge and awareness.

Also possible to discover is deep healing answers of your past. For ex-ample, who you were in a past lifetime, why you married your spouseand if you had been together in another lifetime, inner child healingto recover from abusive or traumatic memories from your childhood, the reason you were born by your parents, to find your lost soul, or theroot cause of any health condition be it physical, mental or emotional. You can even go to the future and see what you will be doing then. You can discover the skills you had in a past or future lifetime and bringthose skills to you once again to the present.

BECOME A HYPNOTHERPIST If you are someone who naturally counsels others or where others tendto come to you for advice, if you have a love for people and want tohelp them move past their suffering and help them grow in the deep-est most rapid way, if you are intuitive and wish to spiritually awakenand uplift others in the most profound way, then becoming a hyp-notherapist may be for you.

You must find the different hypnosis or hypnotherapy schools and seekthe one that fits best for you. Most teach general hypnosis whichmeans you will speak powerfully healing positive affirmations. Someschools teach beautiful guided imagery skills. Some will teach moreadvanced hypnotherapy, which is regression therapy, to do the deeperhealing. Few teach past life regression. And even fewer teach spiritualor shamanic hypnotherapy which brings the deepest of healing andawakening.

Hypnotherapy is in the holistic healing field which is becoming morepopular and widely accepted. Soon we will be seeing the holistic fieldand medical field working in unison together as more people are seek-ing a holistic approach.

To find a hypnotherapist or hypnotherapy school, contact Iah Ka at BalancedEnergies at 951 699-9010 or visit www.BalancedEnergies.com.

2. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid)CLA is a natural occurring omega-6related fatty acid. It helps the bodyincrease metabolic rates, boost theimmune system and keep choles-terol levels in check.

Additionally, CLA is found notonly to reduce body fat, but to in-crease muscle strength and exerciseendurance. Some findings suggestthat CLA reduces the risk of breastcancer, improves immune systemfunction, and decreases risk of car-diovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and even allergies.

Why does it work?CLA allows the body to burn fatmore efficiently. It won’t reducebody fat, but it keeps fat cells fromgetting bigger. This will alter thebody’s fat to muscle ratio, resultingin more lean muscle and less bodyfat. One would think increasingfatty acids would lead to more fat,but it doesn’t always work thatway.

How much should I take?To receive the fat reduction bene-fits, it ‘s recommended to take atleast 3,400 mg per day. I personallytake 2,000 mg per day.

Where is it found?CLA is found in low levels in beef, lamb, whole milk, eggs an otherdairy products. It cannot be pro-duced by the human body. In orderto get high amounts of CLA fromfood, you would have to eat a lot ofhigh fat foods as listed above. So,the best solution for getting ade-quate amounts of CLA is throughsupplementation that includes abalance of safflower, linseed orflaxseed oils.

3. L-carnitineL-carnitine is a metabolite, a build-ing block for protein, which helpsyour body convert fat into energymore quickly. By speeding up theconversion rate, you burn fat calo-ries faster each day. It’s used notonly to aid fat loss, but also as anantioxidant. L-carnitine is com-monly used to treat heart condi-tions, peripheral vascular disease, diabetic neuropathy, Alzheimer’s,kidney disease, hyperthyroidismand to increase sperm production.

Why does it work? The fatty acids that are delivered tothe cells from the circulatory sys-tem need L-carnitine to carry themthrough the mitochondria’s cellmembrane. Fatty acids are brokendown in the mitochondria to pro-duce energy for cell functions. SoL-carnitine assists fat loss by shut-tling more fatty acids into the cell’smitochondria to be used for en-ergy. Because of this, L-carnitineensures that less fat gets stored asbody fat.

Additionally, L-carnitine also worksas a detoxifier as it latches on toshort-chain-fatty-acid waste prod-ucts and shuttles them out of themitochondria, allowing your bodyto more efficiently output energy.

How much do I need?A person that eats meat regularlyconsumes from 100 – 300mg of L-carnitine daily. For purposes ofweight/fat loss, you would need totake at least 500mg daily to see fatloss. I take 2,000 mg per day whenI am reducing fat.

Where does it come from?L-carnitine is derived mainly frommuscles, kidneys, and livers of ani-

The Connection between Common Airborne Infections and Musculoskeletal DiseasesBy Dr. Alexander Shikhman

It has been well recognized that various infectious agents, including the air-borne ones, can trigger a gamut of autoimmune and chronic inflammatoryprocesses in humans and eventually result in the development of serious ill-ness such as arthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. However, the link between the infections and autoimmunity is commonly ignored inmany medical practices which results in substandard care.

There are several airborne bacterial infections which often become chronic insusceptible individuals. These are infections with Mycoplasma pneumonia,Chlamydophilia (Chlamydia) pneumonia, Streptococcus group A (Streptococ-cus pyogenes) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa among others.

Since the isolation of microorganisms may represent a big challenge; the di-agnosis of chronic infections triggering various musculoskeletal ailments istypically based on the detection of specific antibodies.

Case Study: a simple cold that would not go away

A 51 year old man with no previous medical problems complained of extremefatigue, muscle pain, joint pain and morning stiffness as well as a dry coughwith no sputum. He stated that his symptoms started a year earlier after ‘asimple cold’ but they did not go away. Initially he was seen by his primary carephysician who performed a battery of blood tests and did not find anythingabnormal. Then he was referred to a rheumatologist who also performed an-other panel of laboratory tests and could not find any abnormalities. He wasdiagnosed with fibromyalgia and evolving chronic fatigue syndrome andstarted on antidepressants. He tried several antidepressant and prescriptionpain killers but did not believe they were making a difference and did not liketheir side effects.

Upon arriving at our clinic, his physical examination was pertinent for gen-eralized muscle and joint tenderness as well as scattered wheezes over thelungs. His blood work revealed significantly elevated levels of antibodiesagainst Mycoplasma pneumonia, a small microorganism causing bronchitisand pneumonia. The rest of the lab test results were within normal limits. Thepresumption was made that he was dealing with a mycoplasma-driven processand began a trial of antibiotics in combination with antimicrobial herbs. After4 weeks of therapy, he noticed a gradual improvement of the symptoms. In 4months, he was virtually symptom-free. After 1 year, his Mycoplasma anti-body level converted to negative and the therapy was discontinued. He is stillsymptom-free.

Treatment of chronic infections is a long term one. Do not expect improvementright away. In fact, the initial steps of the antimicrobial therapy may be associ-ated with worsening of fatigue and generalized pain which represents your bodyreacting to the antibiotic-induced toxin relief. A successful therapy results in thedecline of the specific antibody titers.

Integrative therapy for airborne chronic infections utilizes not only herbal an-timicrobial remedies but also food supplements facilitating restoration of im-mune responses, pre- and probiotics and natural products enhancing body detoxpotential.

If you have any questions regarding connection between airborne infections and mus-culoskeletal diseases, do not hesitate to contact IFSMED at [email protected] for moreinformation.

mals, such as beef, chicken, sheep, lamb, andrabbit. You can get it from plant sources as well, but the levels are very low. Avocado, alfalfa, andwheat germ contain less than 2 mg per 100 g ofthe edible portions.

4. Omega 3, 6, 9Omegas are essential fatty acids (EFA). They areeffective in weight loss by helping to stabilizeyour mood and keep your energy up. Omegafatty acids can also suppress appetite whichhelps in weight loss. Additionally, they havebeen found to block the genes that produce fatin the body and increase thermogenesis. Ther-mogenesis is basically heating your internaltemperature to burn calories at a higher rate. You need this to keep your body functioningproperly when you’re operating on a caloriedeficit diet .

Why does it work?In simple terms, you need good fat to releasebad fat. This is where Omega 3, 6, and 9 comein. Generally when we are trying to lose fat, it’sbecause we have too much stored “bad” fat. When we begin to cut our fat intake, our bodieswant to hold onto the fat and we have a veryhard time actually getting rid of it. Our bodyneeds to know that it will still get the fat itneeds to survive, so we gradually replace thebad fat with good fats- Omega 3, 6, 9! Never goon a low-fat diet without taking Omega’s to sup-plement the fat intake.

Where do they come from?Omega 3’s, DHA and EPA, come from fatty fishor algae. ALA comes from plants like flax seed.ALA is partially converted to DHA and EPA inyour body.

Omega 6 is an unsaturated fat found in veg-etable oils, nuts and seeds. It is good to replacethe saturated, or bad fats, in your diet with thisone.

How much should I take?Taking the right ratio of 3, 6 & 9 is important aswe don’t want to overdo specific, even healthyfats, in our diet. Too much fat is still too muchfat! Because I don’t eat fish, I take an Omegablend of Omega 3 derived from krill and Omega3, 6 ,9 from plant sources. I stick to the 2-1-1ratio. The recommended amount is around1000 mg Omega 3, 500 mg Omega 6, 500 mgOmega 9. When on a low fat diet, I take triplethat per day.

5. CapsaicinCapsaicin is a natural alkaloid found in chilipeppers. Commonly included in the average fatburner supplement, capsaicin increases metabo-lism, supports the immune system, improvescirculation, and promotes increased body heat. How does it work?

Capsaicin activates the specific proteins that areresponsible for burning fat, and suppresses theproteins that are responsible for generating andstoring fat. Reports show that capsaicin can re-model body fat cells into mitochondrial-richcells that have a higher capacity for fatty acidoxidation.

Capsaicin also decreases the production of thehunger-inducing hormone, ghrelin, causing youto eat less. When using long-term, it may beable to switch your body towards favoring usingfat as an energy source and increasing fat burn.

Where does it come from?Capsaicin is present in hot peppers. It is whatmakes them spicy. To get capsaicin as a supple-ment, look for supplements labeled as peppers(excluding black pepper).

How much do I need?To get the thermogenic properties of capsaicin,it is recommended to use 135mg at each meal.

Passive Stress Reduction: The fastest, easiest way to reliefBy Mike Bundrant

Science has proven that if you spend months and years learning to meditate, your stress will melt and your health will improve.

High blood pressure, hypertension, obesity, anger, anxiety, depression, ADHD,chronic pain, tense relationships, work stress – all these give way to a feeling ofbeing grounded and present and in control.

If you are like most people, you have not put in the months and years of effort inorder to learn the art of deep relaxation. You struggle to meditate and lose inter-est when progress is painstakingly slow.

Meanwhile, stress is eating you alive. You know something needs to be done, butare at a loss for the right tool.

This is why I am a big fan of passive stress reduction through light and soundtechnology. I have been studying it since the 1900’s and have watched in amaze-ment as it has become more sophisticated. It really works and it requires NO EF-FORT.

Light and sound technology works to entrain your brain to enter the just theright state for your needs. Through audio-visual stimulation at just the right fre-quency, your brainwaves naturally adjust to give you the outcome you are look-ing for.

If you need to relax deeply, there’s an application for deep relaxation. If you needfocus, you got it. If you need energy, set the technology to stimulate the rightbrain waves, sit back, relax and notice the significant energy increase when youare done.

The latest and greatest development in light and sound technology is the PSIO.PSIO has taken audio-visual stimulation to the next level by 1) making it gentleon the eyes and 2) combining it with binaural beat sound technology and gentlemusic to stimulate both sides of the brain and 3) creating over 100 programs tochoose, from energy, to personal performance, meditation and personal develop-ment 4) making it compact and easy to use by combining all necessary compo-nents into one compact device.

I’d suggest you take a look at PSIO by visiting PSIOUSA.com. Even better, get afree, no obligation demonstration of the PSIO right here in Murrieta with thecompany Founder, Kelsey Butler. You can reach Kelsey at (951) 600-0770.

Here’s how PSIO works for me. The technology consists of a high tech pair of glasses that diffuse gentle light sig-nals in front of your eyes (it is effective with eyes open or closed). You pop in theear buds, too, to get either binaural beats and soothing music, or voice guidance, depending on the program you choose that is synchronized with the light show. That’s it!

Choose the program that fits your needs in the moment, whether energy, joy, sleep, focus, memory, weight loss, pain management, quitting smoking, generalrelaxation, a power nap or many other applications.

Then, sit back and do nothing for a few minutes other than enjoy the psychedeliclight and sound show. My personal results are typical. When I sit down, I subjec-tively rate my state on a scale of 1-10.

The other morning, my energy was low – about a four – no coffee yet and a baddiet the day before. So, I played the energy program for 16 minutes, took off theglasses, waited another minute or two and rated my level of energy at an eight! That's it. I did nothing else. I even skipped my morning cup of coffee and feltgreat.

Is this all placebo? I don’t know or care because it works. However, if you are in-terested in validation through scientific research, there is plenty of it.

References:Dave Siever: The Effect of Brain Wave Synchronization on Endodontic Anxiety

He recorded the heart rate and GSR of participants during the root canal proce-dure. And as expected, all three groups experienced the most anxiety while re-ceiving the "freezing" injection. However, the group that received visualstimulation and music had the lowest heart rate throughout the root canal proce-dure.

The Use of Repetitive Audio-Visual Entrainment (AVE) in the Management ofChronic Pain

This patient sustained a back injury several years prior to this study and was tak-ing an average of 35 Extra Strength Tylenol daily before AVE sessions were intro-duced. He had attempted suicide one month prior to the beginning of the study. He stated that if the AVE therapy did not help him, he would attempt suicideagain. We are pleased to report that he is alive today.

The overall conclusion was that brainwave entrain-ment is an "effective therapeutic tool". People suffer-ing from cognitive functioning deficits, stress, pain, headaches & migraines, PMS and other behavioralproblems all benefitted from using binaural beats.

Research by Dr Vincent Giampapa, MD, Former Presi-dent of American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine, NewEngland Journal of Medicine

Dr. Giampapa suggested that binaural beats "dramat-ically" affects the production of three hormones directly related to longevity of life and overall well-being; cortisol, DHEA and melatonin.

How to Get the Nutrition you Needfrom your Own BackyardBy Andy Cannella

Kale has only 33 calories in aone-cup serving and is low insaturated fat, and very low incholesterol. It is also a goodsource of dietary fiber, protein, thiamin, riboflavin, folate, iron, magnesium and phosphorus.Kale is also a very good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, vi-tamin B6, calcium, potassium, copper and manganese.

Broccoli, cabbage, bok choy, spinach, beets, carrots, cauliflower, Swisschard, arugula, garlic and onions have very similar nutritional quali-ties. Additionally, they all have a low glycemic load, good to excellentanti-inflammatory properties, and are great additions to your diet forweight loss and optimal health.

One more thing they all have in common is that they can be grown inyour own vegetable garden right now. And that’s the best way to en-sure you are getting the freshest, healthiest, organic vegetables possi-ble. It’s definitely not too late to get your cool season garden started.

The added bonus of getting your backyard garden started now is thatit will be ready to go for the spring and summer. You can be the firston your block to enjoy that first vine-ripened tomato of the season, not to mention peppers, peas, beans, squash, eggplant, cucumbers andmany more. We use only sustainable garden practices to ensure the long-termhealth and productivity of your garden. Natural amendments, ratherthan chemical fertilizers, are used to build the soil, which in turn feedsthe plants.

Crops are rotated to different sections of the garden year to year to re-duce the naturally occurring pests that would otherwise build up inthe soil. Companion planting is used to encourage beneficial pollina-tor and predator insects to visit your garden. 7 Tips for Beginners Who Want the Full Benefits JuicingBy Don Rogers, Owner of Juice it Up Murrieta Village Walk Plaza

Now that the holidays are among us, we have been to one or a few too many par-ties. So, we find ourselves wanting to get back into shape.

We decide that it’s time to start juicing!

You do all the research, buy a juicer and more produce than you know what todo with. You find yourself standing at your kitchen counter. In front of you is allthat you have purchased and you think to yourself: Now what do I do with it?Here are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Start with what you like. When you start juicing, start with some vegetables that you like and enjoy. At thesame time try avoiding, or at least minimizing, overly sweet juices. The sweetjuices are nice as a treat, but you do want to minimize the sugar content. Sostart with vegetables juices that you enjoy and slowly introduce a vegetable orvegetables that you are not so fond of in small amounts.

With time, you will most likely find that your taste buds and body will enjoy thejuices that, in the beginning, you did not enjoy.

2. Take it slowStart slow. You do not want to overwhelm your body, nor do you want to feelnauseous.

Your stomach will send clear signals if you are juicing vegetables that you should-n't be juicing, at least, not at the moment. You might find that certain vegetablesare okay as long as you juice them in smaller doses. Everyone will be different. Itis therefore important that you listen to your body. The vegetables that are okayfor you might not be okay for others.

3. Avoid dark greens to begin withInitially, when you start juicing, you will want to avoid the really dark green leafyvegetables such as kale, dandelion leaves, Swiss Chard, etc. These dark green

leafy vegetables are very high in nutrition but also very powerful. Introduce thesevegetables slowly into your routine after you and your body get used to drinkingfresh juice.

Start with gentle vegetables such as carrots, celery and cucumber. But do notoverdo the carrots. Use ¼ to ½ of a carrot. If you use too many carrots, then youwill increase your blood sugar level too much. With time, you will actually wantto remove carrots from your daily juice routine and instead focus more on the nu-tritional rich and low in sugar vegetables. This does not mean you cannot norshould not juice carrots. Instead it means get some variety. Don't go overboardwith carrots. This can be difficult because carrot juice is really delicious.

4. Ramp it up gradually. When your body is comfortable drinking the more basic vegetables like carrots, celery and cucumber, which could be a week or so, then move onto vegetableslike broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, lettuce, etc. Introduce all new vegetables slowlybut surely. Once your body is acclimatized to these vegetables then you can tryother vegetables.

5. Begin to mix it up with dark greens and herbs. When you feel ready, begin to mix it up a bit. Try some asparagus, spinach, en-dives, etc. Begin to introduce the more commonly eaten vegetables and slowlyintroduce some herbs such as parsley and cilantro.

Over a period of time and as your body gets more used to juicing, then you canslowly introduce some dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, Swiss chard, wheatgrass, collard greens, mustard greens and dandelion greens.

In the beginning, don’t use more than ¼ dark green vegetable juice. The darkgreen vegetable juice can be quite powerful. You will know what I mean aftertrying some Swiss chard, kale or wheatgrass for the first time.

6. Be careful with sugar.Vegetables that are grown underground tend to be higher in sugars. This includescarrots, beets, yams, etc. These vegetables do provide important nutrition, butthey are high in sugar. The key is to not juice them too often and when you dojuice them, use smaller amounts. The nutrition in all vegetables is important, butwe want to juice responsibly by being aware of our blood sugar level.I suggest people juice a little carrot in the beginning simply because it tastesgreat. But I do not like to encourage juicing carrots long term. Carrot juice is agreat way to introduce you and your body to fresh vegetable juice, but the key-word here is "introduce." After your body has been introduced to juicing, it's timeto focus less on carrots and more on vegetables that are grown above ground.

7. Listen to your body. When juicing, it's important that you listen to your body. Your body will tell youwhich vegetables your body likes or dislikes. Whenever introducing a new veg-etable, start slow and with a small amount of the new vegetable.

In this way, you safely discover if there is a vegetable that your body does not like.I like to suggest that people never add more than one new vegetable to their juiceat any given time. If you add two or more new vegetables to your juice, and ifyour body does have a reaction to the juice, then which vegetable was the culprit?

By adding one new vegetable to your juice recipe at a time, you can then easilyidentify which vegetable was the culprit.

Remember the juice will smell just like it tastes. So let your nose taste it first.Being a good juicer takes some time. Don’t give up. Even the best cooks had tolearn to cook.

Still not sure of what to juice? Visit Juice It Up in Murrieta’s Village Wlk Plaza.

I c o m m u n i c a t i o n

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Ther-apist for the past 17 years, I have seenmany couples in my office strugglingwith relationship issues, with both peo-ple in severe emotional pain.

Over the course of the years, I have no-ticed that no matter what the present-ing problem in the relationship seems tobe, communication is the underlyingissue that is present. It can be difficultycommunicating feelings or needs, diffi-culty understanding a spouse’s feelingsor needs, or simply growing in differentdirections and not communicating at all.

Sometimes the communication in a re-lationship becomes more difficult as oneor both of the parties are suffering frommental health issues such as anxiety ordepression. It may be that the couple isjust under stress from everyday issuesrelated to family, finances and health.Whatever the reason in your family, thecommunication issue must be resolvedin order to move forward productively.

Here are some small tips that can create bigchanges for the better in your relationship.

1. Make sure to set aside time EVERYDAY to communicate with your signifi-cant other. That time can be over coffeein the morning, after the day is done oreven meeting for lunch. It can be a smallamount of time such as 15 – 20 minuteto talk about your day and touch base.

2. Make sure to express your feelingswith your partner by using “I” state-ments rather than “you” statements, which can be interpreted as blaming.

3. Make sure to listen to your partner’sfeelings by paying attention to what issaid and asking clarifying questions ifyou are not sure what is meant.

4. Make sure to argue in a fair way bythinking before you speak, refrain from

using “attacking” words and never involveyour children in adult disagreements.

5. Setting aside a “date” night once ortwice a month with your spouse can alsobe very helpful. In using this date night,be sure to focus on talking, connectingand having fun rather than issues thatcould create an argument between you.Save those issues for another time.

If using some of these tips still doesn’talleviate the relationship strain or onlycreates a temporary fix, then it may benecessary for you to seek professional in-tervention. A licensed therapist can helpyou reach your relationship goals.Sometimes that may mean doing somework as an individual as well.

Neurofeedback can help individualsreach their calm, alert, focused zonemaking relationship communication aneasier goal to reach. Neurofeedback isdone in a therapist’s office with sensorsconnected to the ears and scalp. Bywatching the computer screen game orpictures, you can teach your brain to op-erate in that calm alert focused zone. This process is simple, non-invasive andonly takes about 30 minutes of your dayonce or twice a week.

When you are able to be calm, alert andfocused at home, your ability to use ap-propriate communication skills will im-prove. As your communicationimproves, your relationship can improveas well.

Remember, you don’t need to suffer in adifficult relationship. You have the abil-ity to take the steps necessary to have allthat you want in your relationship!

Keep Your ChildrenHealthy This Seasonat Prime WellnessClinic

By Dr. Kelly Austin, ND

An ounce of prevention isworth a pound of cure! Build-ing the immune system natu-rally is essential to maintaininghealth throughout the fall andwinter months.

With cold and flu season quickly approaching, there are many things youcan do now to support your child’s immune system. As Naturopathicphysicians we work with our patients to ensure optimum health throughindividualized treatment plans, nutritional modifications, vitamin supple-mentation, botanical medicine and homeopathy.

We want to ensure you have an arsenal of natural treatments available toprevent illnesses from the common cold to the flu. Everyone should startoff with the following simple suggestions in their medicine cabinet:

• Vitamin C enhances the immune system’s ability to fight infections ofmany kinds. It both reduces the duration and the severity of symptoms ofcold and flu. When your body is sick, you can often take higher dosagesof Vitamin C than you would in a healthy state. Kids love our Vitamin Cpowder in any beverage.

• Zinc is an essential mineral in the body that is necessary for immunefunction. It can prevent a cold or flu virus from reproducing and can helprelieve respiratory symptoms. You might in fact be deficient in zinc – youcan find out by taling a Zinc Tally Test.

• Beneficial bacteria (probiotics) such as Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifi-dobacterium longum stimulate innate immunity and protect against for-eign bacteria and viruses. Research shows that children who use probioticsare less likely to develop upper respiratory infections, flu, or digestive infec-tions.

• Vitamin D improves immune response and strengthens the respiratorysystem. As temperatures begin to drop and we spend less time outdoors inthe sunlight, our Vitamin D levels begin to drop. This is part of the reason“flu season” occurs in the winter.

There are so many diet and lifestyle changes that should be made with theseason change. Vegetables are the body’s main source of naturally occur-ring vitamins and minerals, which provide building blocks for a healthy im-mune system. Eating colorful foods that are high in antioxidants, couldboth protect your cells and play a role in immune health!

To keep your kids healthy this winter, here’s what we recommend:

• Avoid sugar to keep the immune system healthy! Studies show that eat-ing 1 tsp of sugar can depress the immune system for up to several hours, making you more susceptible to catching a virus like the flu. This includesall white foods, refined grains, sweeteners and sodas.

• Ensure your child has plenty of fluids in their daily routine, includingwater and herbal teas like peppermint, lemon balm and nettle. Dehydra-tion works against the immune system by weakening the immune responseand the mucus membranes’ ability to protect the body. Avoid fruit juices asthey have high concentrations of sugar.

• Get plenty of sleep and reduce stress! It is well known that when thebody has altered cortisol levels from stress, the immune system does notfunction optimally. Going to bed earlier and waking up later is needed withthe change of the fall and winter seasons.

• Glutathione: An antioxidant to remember this season is glutathione.Nebulized glutathione can be used to promote lung function. It can in-crease white blood cells, breakup mucus and congestion and alleviate thesymptoms of allergies, sinusitis, bronchitis and colds.

It’s Holiday season again! How did 2013 go by sofast? I wanted to thank you all for reading my arti-cles and I hope you have been able to learn athing or two throughout the year!

Given, that this is the season for eating (let’s behonest people), I wanted to write about core mus-cles. I love the core. It is central to everything wedo. A weak core is a weak you. A poor internalcore has digestion problems and food sensitivities. This can lead to headaches, bloat and mind fog toname just a few discomforts.

One of the best things you can do for you core isto detox or cleanse periodically. Why? There arelots of great reasons, but the most common senseone is that if we bother to change the oil in ourcars periodically - get them tuned up and flush outsystems - isn’t it a good idea to do the same thingfor ourselves?

Our bodies go through shifts during every season. It is important to detox so your body cleans outthe old that may be sabotaging your weight lossefforts or suppressing your immune system. Sea-sonal detoxes allow the body to shift graduallyinto eating foods designed to be eaten during thatseason.

It allows you to learn the tools you need to sup-port your metabolism through the changing sea-son, and will renew your cells so you can glowfrom the inside out.

A great way to take care of your gut is to drinkplenty of water daily - about half your bodyweight in ounces. I like to drink mine warm. Ac-cording to Ayruvedic medicine, this warm waterhelps flush toxins out of the gut faster than coldwater. Other prefers lemon water and this is awonderful way to support your liver.

Take some probiotics, especially if you take antibi-otics! Prescription antibiotics may kill an infection, which is great, but they also kill off our beneficialgut flora. This leaves your intestines susceptible toyeast over growth and other gut issues.

Taking a probiotic supplement will help replenishthe good gut bacteria and restore balance. Othergreat dietary options for probiotics are fermentedfoods such as tempeh, pickles, sauerkraut, Kefirand cultured yogurt.

Once you have established ”good” gut bacteria,it’s important to feed them, so they stay strongand healthy. According to the authors of Gut In-

sight: Probiotics and Prebiotics for Digestive Healthand Well-Being, Jo Ann Tatum Hattner and SusanAnderes, you should include the following foods inyour diet: bananas, apples, blackberries, blueber-ries, boysenberries, strawberries, raspberries, cran-berries and raisins.

Vegetables rich in prebiotic content include: arti-chokes, asparagus, jicama, red and white onions, leeks, garlic, spinach, dandelion greens and toma-toes.

One of my favorite things to do for myself everyday is to BREATHE! You should try it, too. Find acomfortable place to sit or lie down and breathedeeply into your belly. This oxygenates your wholebody and gets the diaphragm moving. The bigbreaths allow you to use all your respiratory capac-ity while the movement generated in the di-aphragm massages all those internal organs thatwork so hard for you!

Get in a few good belly laughs too - laughter is always the best medicine!

Are You Taking Care of your Own Needs?By Jennifer McCormickMany of us lead busy lives and feel we have no free time to devote to our-selves. We are so busy taking care of everyone and everything else thatwe are too tired to exercise, meditate or do something that we deem fun.

As we navigate the holidays, with all the shopping, the indulgent foods, family gatherings, the countless errands and the like we will serve our-selves best by taking a moment for ourselves.

A moment to breathe, perhaps to be still and look within to find calmness.

Meditation, yoga, chanting, taking a walk, dancing, volunteering are justa few of the ways to nourish yourself during the holidays. Devoting fiveto fifteen minutes just for yourself everyday.

Upon waking, feel your body, breathe deeply and stretch. Think of 10things you are grateful for. Or before going to bed, recount the manyways you have been blessed in your life, focusing ONLY on the positive.Remember this is time for you to connect and center yourself. We areable to offer more when our own needs are taken care of first.

When we are blessed and feel gratitude we may remember that we don’tknow everyone’s story or have not walked in their shoes. This is what al-lows us to see the world with more compassion.

The saying dance like no one is watching, sing like no one is listeningand love like you've never been hurt comes to mind.

Take the time to nurture your inner child and do something fun for your-self everyday. In doing so, you will feel happier and lighter. You may justnavigate this holiday season with a bit more ease.

Offering holistic wellness techniques including guided meditation, hypnosis, hypnotherapy, personal training, and nutritional counseling for those seekingtransformation of your mind, body and soul. Contact Jennifer McCormick at951-723-0925 [email protected].
