Stoptober Campaign PackWelcome to your Stoptober 2015 campaign pack. Here, you will find all of the information that you need to successfully plan and promote Stoptober in your school.Stoptober is the NHS 28-day national stop smoking challenge that encourages people all across the country to stop smoking together on the 1 October for 28 days (and beyond).  Evidence shows that if a smoker can quit for 28 days they are five times more likely to stay smokefree, and Stoptober motivates and supports quitters through the 28 days. Stoptober provides schools with an opportunity to teach pupils about the risks of smoking and can also provide pupils and families with support to quit smoking.

SmokeFree Islington have produced these Stoptober posters for you to print and display in your school.

For further information and support on anything in this pack, please contact Hayley Harkins (Health and Wellbeing Project Officer) on 0207 527 3139 or [email protected]

Smokefree Homes and Cars

As you may be aware, there is a new law coming into effect on 1 October 2015 about smoking in vehicles. Under new laws, it will be an offence to smoke in a vehicle with someone under the age of 18 present, or to fail to prevent smoking in a vehicle with someone under the age of 18 present.

The Smokefree homes and cars campaign aims to raise awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke to children and encouraging people to stop smoking as the best way to protect their family.Millions of children in the UK are exposed to secondhand smoke that puts them at increased risk of lung disease, meningitis and cot death.

Smoke free school gates

SmokeFree Islington would like to support schools who want to implement a policy of smoke free school gates (and playgrounds), with a workshop for pupils (involving pupils in the campaign, for example designing signs and posters), or for parents with information on secondhand smoke and why children start to smoke.

If your school would like support around tackling smoking at the school gates contact Marina Chrysou [email protected] or Hayley Harkins [email protected]

Tobacco education (PSHE) resources for primary schools

Primary lesson plans

Here are some sample lesson plans from our NEW drug, alcohol and tobacco education teaching resource Drug Wise which we will be sent to schools as an interactive CD after half term!

For support to teach these lessons, for other lesson plans or more information, please contact Sally Martin, Healthy Schools Advisor (Primary PSHE) [email protected]

These lessons have been especially selected for schools who would like to teach about the risks of smoking as part of the Stoptober campaign:

Year 1 - What do we put into our bodies? Year 3 - Smoking and tobacco / Stopping smoking Year 5 – Risks of smoking / The media and other influences / Resisting pressure

The tobacco quiz activity explored in the Year 3 lesson (smoking and tobacco) can also be used as a home/school link activity for pupils to quiz their parents.

To evaluate the impact of the lessons you might want to use the pre and post-topic assessment and pupil reflection activities for Year 5, as this is a whole Year 5 unit of work.

Please note: in preparation for the Year 3 lessons you may want to order some further resources in advance, including:

Smokey Sue – smoking machine (available from the Islington Education Library Service), cigarettes and a lighter.

Stop smoking tool kits, such as the NHS quit kit at www.gosmokefree.nhs.uk/quit-tools/quit-kit. These can be ordered from https://quitnow.smokefree.nhs.uk (click ‘Quit now’ andfill in your details to receive a free quit kit).

Tobacco education (PSHE) resources for secondary schools

KS3 scheme of workThis scheme of work contains a set of lesson plans and resources to help pupils become more aware of the effects and impact of smoking. The lessons provide opportunities to explore attitudes to smoking and develop the skills to make healthy choices and resist pressure. There are opportunities to raise the issue of smoking other substances, in particular shisha. The scheme of work is available on the Healthy Schools area in Fronter; if you would like a CD-rom copy sent to you please contact Hayley Harkins [email protected]

If you would like support to ensure your drug education programme addresses smoking (of cannabis, e-cigarettes and shisha as well as tobacco), especially with older year groups, please get in touch with Janine Killough, Healthy Schools Advisor (Secondary PSHE) [email protected]

Support for vulnerable pupils who are smoking, or at risk of smoking

Promoting Stoptober and raising the issue with parents:

The Health and Wellbeing team work in partnership with SmokeFree Islington to support schools in raising awareness of stopping smoking and smoke free homes with families. There are a number of ways to do this:

Information display: schools can have a display and stall in the entrance of the school encouraging parents to sign up for the smoke free homes pledge and to find out more about the quit smoking services available in the borough.

Information stall: SmokeFree Islington can hold information stalls in schools at fairs and coffee mornings, which gives parents the opportunity to ask any questions they have in an informal setting. This will also give parents an opportunity to find out about the support available to quit smoking.

Interactive workshop for parents: the Health and Wellbeing team and SmokeFree Islington offer workshops on quitting smoking, shisha and electronic cigarettes. These aim to help parents find out more about the topic and the myths surrounding them. They can also find out about the support available to quit smoking. Please contact [email protected] if you would like to find out more or sign up.

Smokefree parent champions: the Health and Wellbeing team and SmokeFree Islington offer a project for parents to become involved in encouraging other parents to keep the school playground smoke free. Please contact [email protected] if you would like to find out more
