Healthy Living and Diabetes

This year when International Diabetes Federation adopted a simple yet powerful

theme of „Healthy Living and Diabetes‟ for their three years programme (2014-

16), we at Grass-Diabetes.com couldn‟t be happier as it gave immense

confidence and made our belief stronger to our organization on this simple fact

which we have been reiterating for so many years. This thought was the basic

fundamental reason which made us function on the concept of Genetic Risk

Assessment System for Diabetes i.e.

Where does world stands on Diabetes?

The above facts and figures echo the importance of an urgent action- An

action which reinstates the fact that most cases of type 2 diabetes can be

prevented. The serious complications of diabetes can be avoided through

healthy lifestyles and living environments that encourage and facilitate healthy

behaviour.

382,000,000 People

are affected by Diabetes Worldwide

316 Million persons are at High Risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes

By 2035, every 1 in 10 person will have

diabetes

The problem is threatning because it

remains hidden throughout the world

High Risk persons will increase to

What is Healthy Living and how does it helps in battling diabetes?

Healthy Living is about making healthy choices every day. A few of the best

things we can do to stay healthy are:

Being physically active

Eating well balanced food

Not indulging in habits like smoking or excessive alcohol intake

Get enough sleep

Focus on being mental healthiness too

Everyday making healthy choices which keep us fit physically, mentally and

spiritually.

How to adopt “Healthy Living” to battle Diabetes?

Healthy Living is a very clear and simple way of communicating message for

masses as well as „classes‟ to make them realize and generate awareness on,

how the healthy choice can be the easiest choice to avoid diabetes. There are

various ways an individual can take to make knowledgeable decisions about

what they eat and how they live their life which helps them to battle various

diseases including diabetes.

If you pay attention to a simple fact on how important it is to start your

day with a healthy breakfast, you will win the first battle for a healthy living

and simultaneously may win over not acquiring type 2 diabetes too.

Skipping breakfast leads to weight gain which is one of the main factors of

type 2 diabetes. Have unsweetened tea or coffee, unsweetened yogurt,

low sugar-high fibre cereals in breakfast and including leafy vegetables,

fish, fresh fruits, whole grains food items, nuts etc. in your lunch and dinner,

foods like these are found to be very effective in reducing the person‟s risk

of type 2 diabetes.

Focus on your lifestyle. Do you live atleast a moderately active life? Do

you know that just 30 minutes of exercise a day can reduce your risk of

developing type 2 diabetes by 40%? Need we say anything? Physical

activity is one of the main pillars in the prevention of diabetes. An

improved physical activity is important in maintaining weight loss which is

directly linked to reduce blood pressure, reduce latent heart rate,

increased insulin sensitivity, improved body composition and

psychological well-being. Obesity, mainly abdominal obesity, is

interconnected to the development of type 2 diabetes.

As per IDF‟s statistics, being overweight and having obesity interprets to

80% of new cases of type 2 diabetes. Working out to reduce weight

improves insulin resistance and reduces hypertension. People who are

overweight or obese should therefore be encouraged to achieve and

maintain a healthy body weight.

To begin a “Healthy Living” you don‟t need to necessarily have a threat of

diabetes disease looming over your head. It is a concept for one and all, but if

you are diabetic or feel you are on verge of being a diabetic, changes are

required to be made in your life now.

If you are worried that your lifestyle looks exactly opposite to what you have

read here and think that all these above „Healthy Living‟ suggestions are meant

for you, begin your first step towards knowing how much of risk you are under.

Grass-Diabetes.com‟s concept originated from same idea which International

Diabetes Federation has adopted as their theme this time. We believe in

promoting and educating people on introducing to the risks of diabetes so that

they can start living a Healthier Life and work towards avoiding type 2 diabetes.
