“HEALING YOUR SKIN FROM THE INSIDE OUT!” IN THIS ISSUE

Your Winter Skin Checkup

Changes in the look and feel of your skin during cold, winter months are not abnormal, but you can counteract unpleasant irritation.

What are the signs?

The telltale symptoms of dry skin are easy to spot: Skin just generally feels drier and tighter. Other signs may include roughness, itching, severe redness, flaking and scaling. Sometimes pores become less visible or skin may look dull. In severe cases, skin may crack and bleed, especially on the hands and fingertips.

Why does it happen?

Sun exposure or cold, dry air can cause skin to become dehydrated. Dry skin is more common in the winter because the air

contains less humidity. It can also be genetic or hereditary, or a natural effect of aging.

What are your options?

LeLayah Cosmetics has a variety of body butters and moisturizers that are not just for the face, but can be use all over the skin. Try a LeLayah’s Kiwi Pigmentation Enhancer which contains natural kiwi, jojoba oil, and other organic ingredients that will help seal in moisture.

Look for fragrance-free products with alpha hydroxy acids, which gently exfoliate to allow more water and moisture into the skin. LeLayah’s Pomegranate Passion Exfoliant packs a powerful supply of natural and organic alpha hydroxy. The pomegranate seeds will remove dead skin while ensuring that moisture is not depleted from the skin. (Continued – Page 2)

(Winter Skin Checkup – Continued)

Avoid antibacterial and deodorant soaps, which can be harsh and drying. Instead, use a gentle cleanser, such as LeLayah’s Botanical Boost Cleanser which can also be used as a body wash.

Use a humidifier during the winter. Central heating and space heaters can dry out the air in your home which is one of the biggest contributors to dry cracked skin.

Always choose natural, breathable fabrics, such as cotton and silk, for your bedding and innermost layer of clothing.

Drink plenty of water and other liquids to keep skin hydrated from the inside out. Omega-3s (essential fatty acids found in foods such as salmon, walnuts, flaxseed,

soybeans and broccoli) can also help keep skin supple.

When should you worry? See a skin care expert if dryness and itching keep you awake at night, if you have open sores or large areas of scaling or peeling skin, or if you develop an infection from scratching. You could have a more serious condition such as eczema, psoriasis or another skin disorder. Did you know?

Although everyone's skin changes with age, a man's skin tends to stay moist longer. That's because a woman's skin becomes much drier after menopause.

The best time to apply moisturizers are immediately after a shower or bath, when skin is still damp.

Since dry skin is extra-sensitive, it's important to protect it from the sun, especially if it's snowing (snow can reflect as much as 80 percent of the sun's rays). Apply the correct SPF based on your correct Fitzpatrick score every day to your face, neck and ears.

See Your Skin Care Expert if you are not sure of your Fitzpatrick Scale rating.

How Stress

Affects Your Skin Nurturing happy, healthy skin begins with using the best products to cleanse, moisturize and rejuvenate – but it doesn’t stop there. The truth is, caring for your

skin can be a battle, and stress can be a major factor. None of us are immune to stress. It can sneak up quietly. Other times it charges at us head-on. But how does stress affect your skin? In times of duress, our bodies produce a steroid hormone called cortisol which, aside from the sparking the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism, increases your skin’s natural oil production cycle. This can allow bacteria to breed, resulting in breakouts. When you’re under attack from stress, you need a strategy to help relieve it – the first step is to consult your skin care expert..

Next, here’s what else you can do. Listen to your body Stress triggers can be difficult to pin down, especially when you’re busy. If you’re feeling tired, having trouble sleeping, experiencing changes in appetite or finding it hard to focus, ensure you take time out to do the things that make you happy and promote relaxation. This might involve getting back to that book you never finished, catching up with friends or settling in for a well-timed Saturday nap.

(How Stress Affects Your Skin – Continued) Maintain your skin care ritual Work stress often scrambles our priorities, so keeping up routines like your skin care ritual can help you feel more balanced. Proper cleansing is also a good way to slow down and spend some quality time pampering yourself after a long, hard day. Treat your daily cleansing ritual as an opportunity to indulge in some much deserved you-time, using a cleanser with natural ingredients from the LeLayah line that’s suited to your skin type and won’t cause irritation. Experience our hydrating anti-aging skin care treatment like the 24K Gold facial or indulge your senses with a White Chocolate-Raspberry , enzyme

facial treatment for a peaceful, mindful moment during the day. These facials also contains natural antioxidants ingredients which help keep your skin fresh, hydrated and revitalized. Relax, reflect, rejuvenate While an effective skin care ritual is key to keeping skin clear and healthy, addressing the causes of stress is even more important. Always consult your skin care expert as a starting point. Identifying situations that make you feel anxious or overwhelmed, recognizing but not engaging with present emotions, and gradually changing your response to them can help you better manage stress over time, in positive ways. Recognizing the physical and emotional experience of stress when it arises, accepting its presence, and practicing deep, abdominal breathing also helps neutralize anxiety.

Talking through issues with an attentive friend or trained professional can also help liberate stress and make sense of the big picture. Otherwise, meditation and massage are also great ways to slow down and reconnect with what’s truly important – you and your well-being. Stress is a part of modern life, but it doesn’t need to rule yours. Here are some other great Want some other tips and tricks for handling your stress? The Health Benefits of Chocolate

Science now shows that chocolate may be good for you. Five chemical compounds contained in raw, unadulterated chocolate are highlighted to show exactly what they are and how they work.

First, antioxidant polyphenols that neutralize free radicals provide some of the most compelling aspects of eating chocolate because they can reduce processes associated with the development of diseases like Alzheimer’s, heart disease and cancer.

Second, chocolate contains anandamide, named after the Sanskrit word for “bliss,” which is a neurotransmitter in the brain that temporarily blocks feelings of pain and anxiety.

The caffeine and theobromine in chocolate have been shown to produce higher levels of physical energy and mental alertness while, counter-intuitively, lowering blood pressure in women.

Chocolate’s heart-friendly properties may be due to the presence of epicatechins, antioxidants which are found in higher concentrations in darker and raw forms.

Studies showed that one-and-a-half ounces of dark chocolate a day for 2 weeks reduced stress hormone levels.

Lastly, when used on the skin, chocolate facials are known for the following benefits :high level of anti-oxidants, which is great for your skin, anti-ageing properties, it imparts a healthy glow to your face, it takes care of blemishes and boosts the production of collagen, it softens and hydrates your skin so that wrinkles are kept at bay, and, having a chocolate facial is known to suit almost every skin type and hence, you can benefit from this divine chocolatey experience, no matter what skin type you are blessed with.
