Watch the water glide and dance as it fills the kettle. Press the button. As the

water boils hear the thunderous roll and feel the warm steam as it rises. Making and

drinking a cup of tea is one of life’s most simple and enjoyable

pleasures.

From around 4,700 years ago in China the beverage has

been enjoyed in solitude, in ceremonies and at parties. With

my tea steeping and your company, I can’t think of a better

way to start a discussion on women’s health and being your

best.

Starting with tea, our first article is entitled the Virtuesof Tea, which discusses the main varieties of tea and

the wealth of health benefits each offers. Herbal and

herbal formula teas offer even more flavourful

varieties and can help with innumerable health

conditions. Seek them out at your favourite

health food store.

Lack of adequate sleep (which is my current

challenge with a seven-month-old baby), menopause,

PMS, a life-change, fertility issues, over-work, an

illness, a lack of exercise and good nutrition, and even

aging can make a woman not feel her best. That’s why

for this issue, I also invited naturopaths and other writers

to share their expertise and health solutions with you.

Are you at your best? You can be. Grab yourself a cup

of tea and find a comfortable place to read and find out how.

A HEALTH INFUSION

Ever since Shen Nong discovered the stimulating and detoxifying

properties of tea some 4,000 years ago, humans have been interested in

its medicinal properties. It is these properties that first made it popular, at

a time when it was considered a medicine.

It was thought that its bitter taste stimulated wakefulness, good

overall health and the acquisition of great wisdom. In Chinese medicine,

during the Tang and Song dynasties, the medicinal effects of tea were

recognized more and more. It was recommended to cure and prevent

various ills, such as headaches, dark thoughts and bad digestion as well

as to dissolve fats.

A few centuries later, Li Shizhen (1518–1593), physician and author

of Compendium of Materia Medica, claimed that tea could

regulate the body’s internal temperature, calm anxiety,

dissolve fats and improve concentration.

Although the stimulating, diuretic and antibacterial

properties of tea were recognized by Chinese medicine

a very long time ago, it is only recently that modern

science has confirmed these benefits. Because of its

antioxidant effects, the health benefits of tea are arousing a lot of

interest in the medical community, particularly in the areas of cancer

prevention and the treatment of degenerative and cardiovascular

diseases. Today, we no longer believe that tea is an elixir of

immortality or has the mystical powers attributed to it by the Taoists of

yore. However, it has virtues that contribute to longevity by stimulating

heart function, strengthening the immune system and preventing

cellular mutations. Of course, processing brings out new chemical

elements in the leaves, which change their taste as well as their

properties, and so each family of tea has its own specific qualities.

THE PROPERTIES OF WHITE TEARefreshing and thirst quenching, in China, white tea is

consumed mainly in the summer. According to Chinese

medicine, it helps to counteract excessive heat and alleviates

the symptoms of menopause.

THE PROPERTIES OF GREEN TEAAccording to recent studies, green tea appears to

contain a higher number of polyphenols than other tea

families, making it increasingly popular in the West

over the last few years. Thanks to its antioxidant

properties, green tea could prevent certain forms of

cancer. Also said to enhance intellectual performance,

green tea contains more iron, vitamins and catechins than

black tea. The dehydration method used in the

processing of green tea produces a higher polyphenol

content in the leaves.

THE PROPERTIES OF WULONG TEARegular consumption of wulong tea (just over ¼ ounce/ 8

grams per day) is said to have a slimming effect by stimulating

the metabolizing of lipids. Its relaxing, antistress, even

euphoric effect is said to be due to the high concentration of

aromatic oils, which are drawn out from the leaves during

rolling.

THE PROPERTIES OF BLACK TEAThe enzymatic oxidation undergone by the leaves during

the processing of black tea converts some of the catechins into

theaflavins and thearubigins and destroys some of the

vitamins. On the other hand, the caffeine in black tea is

released more rapidly into the bloodstream over a shorter

period compared to green tea, as oxidation partially separates

it from the tannins. This means that black tea is more effective

as a physical stimulant than green tea.

THE PROPERTIES OF PU ER TEABecause of its specific properties, Pu er tea has long been

used as a dietary supplement by many nomadic tribes and

ethnic groups living in regions of Asia. As these people ate

mostly very fatty yak meat, tea allowed them to balance their

diet, counteracting the fat. Today the purging qualities of Pu er

teas are recognized as helping specifically to regulate the body

and stimulate digestion. Pu er also helps eliminate cholesterol

from the body.

BEEF IN WULONG TEAIn our grandmothers’ time it was

customary to deglaze a pan with tea, often a strong black tea, and so this is anaffectionate nod to our ancestors andtheir traditional knowledge.

INGREDIENTS2 (10-ounce/300 g) pieces of sirloinSalt and pepper, to taste2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil6 to 7 tablespoons butter1 cup (250 ml) water2 tablespoons (30 ml) wulong tea (such as Shui Xian, Mi Lan Xiangor Qi Lan Xiang)

DIRECTIONSSeason the pieces of beef with salt

and pepper to taste. Heat a cast-ironskillet over high heat until it smokes. Addthe olive oil and 4 tablespoons of butter.

Place the pieces of beef in the skilletand cook until a crust forms, around 3 or4 minutes on each side, depending on thethickness of the beef. Place the beef in acold oven for 2 to 3 minutes, dependingon the desired degree of doneness.Remove the beef from the skillet. Setaside.

Wipe excess fat from the skillet. Melt2 or 3 tablespoons (30 to 45 ml) of butterand cook until it turns hazelnut brown.Deglaze with water, scraping the bottomof the skillet to recover any browned bitsof the meat. Reduce the liquid by half andadd the wulong tea. Leave to infuse for 2to 3 minutes, then pour through a finestrainer. Bring the mixture back to a boiland whisk.

Slice the beef and serve with thewulong-flavored drippings.

Serve the meat with a vegetablepuree and seasonal onions.

TOMATO COULIS WITH SENCHAINGREDIENTS10 large ripe plum tomatoesIce cubes4 tablespoons (60 ml) olive oil10 sprigs thyme1 head garlic, separated into unpeeled cloves cut in half1 cup (250 ml) water8 teaspoons (40 ml) Sencha Haruno1½ teaspoons (7 ml) sugar1½ teaspoons (7 ml) salt

DIRECTIONSIt is important to choose very ripe tomatoes, as they will be easier to

peel. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C) and bring a large saucepan ofwater to a boil. Remove the tomato stems and, using a small paring knife, score the base of each tomato in the shape of a cross to facilitate peeling.Fill a large mixing bowl with ice and water.

Plunge the tomatoes into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, pullthem out then immediately plunge them into the bowl of ice water. Using aparing knife, peel the tomatoes starting at the scored base. They shouldpeel very easily.

Line a baking sheet with well-oiled parchment paper. Slice thetomatoes in half lengthwise and place them facedown on the lined bakingsheet. Arrange the garlic cloves and the sprigs of thyme on top of thetomatoes. Salt and pepper to taste. Bake in the oven for 3½ hours, untilthe tomatoes are soft to the touch and slightly dry.

Bring 1 cup water to a boil and infuse the tea for 3 minutes. Do notpress the leaves during infusion because the liquid will become too bitter.Remove the leaves and set aside.

Blend the still-hot tomatoes in a blender to obtain a smooth puree. With the blender still running, add the tea, sugar and a little salt andcombine well. Strain the coulis through a fine strainer. Add pepper to taste.Serve hot or at room temperature with poultry, white meat or lobster.

Passion flower, valerian and hops are among the most widely

used sedative botanicals. Their track record of efficacy is well

known and long standing. But are these botanicals popular because

they are the only options? As it turns out, the answer to that question

is a resounding “No!” Here, then, is a short introduction to some

other calming herbs with which you may not be familiar.

The Chinese jujube or red date Ziziphus jujube, also known

simply as jujube, is a staple in Asian medicine for soothing nerves

and reducing stress. Current research suggests that its action may

result from the modification of levels of the neurohormone

serotonin, which is known to affect mood and sleep.

Albizia kalkora – also known as silk tree or Albizia julibrissin,

is a medium sized tree that is common in Asia. Although silk tree has

a long history of use in traditional medicine, our understanding of

how it works is limited. Research has shown that the seeds of silk

tree contain a biologically active substance, albizziin, which is an

analog of the amino acid glutamine. Glutamine has many

physiological functions, including regulation of moods. While there

is no direct evidence so far, it may be that albizziin exerts a calming

effect by mimicking the action of glutamine in the brain.

Biota orientalis - also known as Biota, is another plant that is

used extensively in Asian medicine. It has many traditional uses and

is known to be sedating. Biota appears to exert its effect by partially

engaging a brain receptor for the neurohormone GABA (gamma

aminobutyric acid) . It has been reported that the actions of biota can

be compared to some sedative/anxiolytic drugs.

You may have noticed a trend with respect to the actions of

these herbs; they all act on brain receptors for neurotransmitters.

Hops, passion flower and valerian do this too. Hops contains a

constituent, 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol, which is believed to act on

GABA receptors. Valerian extracts have several neurologically

active constituents, including GABA; valerian has been shown to act

on GABA receptors, and may also act on receptors for serotonin,

dopamine and noradrenaline . Finally, passion flower seems to exert

its action on GABA receptors as well.

When dealing with a condition like insomnia which can have

many possible causes, it is important for treatment purposes to

distinguish occasional insomnia from chronic. Each of the herbs

above is traditionally used for the short-term treatment of occasional

insomnia. The fact that some of them have different but

complimentary methods of action means that they may act more

effectively in combination then singly, and this would be a common

approach used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, for example.

There may be contraindications to taking any of these herbs,

and one should consult a naturopathic doctor or licensed herbalist

before taking them. Use them with caution until you know how they

affect you, and do not use them at times when you need to be alert,

especially when driving.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

We are bombarded by environmental estrogens, also called xenoestrogens or

estrogen mimickers. These man-made chemicals act exactly like estrogen in the body.

Estrogen-mimickers are found in everything from plastics, cosmetics and pesticides to

dry cleaning chemicals, dairy products and more. Too much estrogen upsets the body’s

delicate balance of hormones. Some of the most common female estrogen-dominant

conditions are PMS, endometriosis, abnormal PAP tests, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids,

cystic breasts, heavy periods, low thyroid, hormonal acne, severe menopausal

symptoms, breast cancer and the list goes on. Too much estrogen can block the uptake

of thyroid hormone, promoting low thyroid. Over 23 percent of Canadians take thyroid

medication for low thyroid and an estimated 30 percent have undiagnosed low thyroid

with symptoms that include hair loss, weight gain, feeling cold, constipation, night

sweats, recurring miscarriage, heavy periods, high cholesterol and so much more.

Women need estrogen but not the toxic type found in the environment.

Women are supplied with estrogen from their ovaries, adrenal glands and fat

cells. When the ovaries take a much-needed rest at menopause, or if the

ovaries are surgically removed during a hysterectomy, the adrenal glands

become the main source of estrogen. The adrenal glands sit atop the

kidneys and they also help us deal with stress and control water balance in

the body. When our adrenal glands become exhausted from too much

stress, hormone havoc ensues. Classic symptoms include insomnia where

you fall asleep fine but wake up several hours later and can’t fall back to

sleep, caffeine and salt cravings, no energy, difficulty handling stress and

weight gain around the middle.

The liver is the key organ for detoxifying excess hormones, breaks

down and distributes estrogen and other hormones. Your liver decides if

your estrogen is going to stay in the healthy form or be converted into

cancer-causing estrogens. Our liver becomes sluggish due to a diet of too

many bad fats (from lard, margarine and refined oils), sugars and artificial

sweeteners, fried foods, and not enough vegetables and good protein.

Regular alcohol consumption also negatively affects the liver’s ability to

maintain hormone balance.

HORMONE HARMONYThe liver, thyroid and the adrenal glands must operate at peak

performance to ensure hormone harmony. The basis of a healthy hormone

program is a diet full of cruciferous vegetables and lean protein from wild,

free-range sources. There are also key herbs and nutrients researched to

support the adrenals, liver and thyroid.

ADRENAL SUPPORTEight hours of deep restful sleep will reverse adrenal exhaustion

quickly. At bedtime, take a natural sleep aid containing melatonin,

chamomile, hops, valerian and passionflower to help with sleep. The

following herbs should be taken in combination to nourish the adrenals

and help reduce the effects of stress:

Hormonal Harmony

Page 15: Healthy Directions Oct/Nov 2012 Alberta Edition

Rhodiola increases the body’s resistance to all types

of stress; enhances mental and physical performance;

and regulates the heart by increasing oxygen utilization.

Suma is called "para todo" which means "for

everything.” It is considered a regenerative tonic for the

nervous, reproductive and digestive systems and is used

to treat hormonal disorders, sexual dysfunction, fatigue,

and stress.

Schizandra berry is a general tonic that promotes

liver health and counters the effects of stress and fatigue.

It is also used for insomnia associated with changing

hormones.

Ashwagandha increases energy to improve overall

health and longevity. Studies have proven powerful anti-

stress effects as well as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory,

anti-tumour and immune-modulating properties.

Ashwagandha not only supports the adrenals but has

also been found to improve thyroid function too.

SUPPORT A LOW THYROIDThe adrenal glands and the thyroid are directly

linked so once the adrenals become exhausted, the

thyroid goes low. The following nutrients have been

found to help support the thyroid. These nutrients can be

safely taken along with thyroid medicines. Never stop

your thyroid hormone drug without your doctor’s

recommendation.

Tyrosine is an amino acid necessary for the

manufacture of thyroid hormones. Tyrosine assists a

sluggish thyroid and can aid the loss of those unwanted

pounds. Ashwagandha supports the thyroid gland.

Studies show that it enhances thyroid function and

produces a significant increase in T4 thyroid hormone.

Guggal extract supports complete thyroid health

while enhancing the conversion of T4 hormone to the

more potent T3 hormone. Guggal extract and

ashwagandha should be used together to support thyroid

health.

Potassium iodide is essential for the manufacture of

thyroid hormones, and was initially added to salt to

combat the epidemic of low thyroid in Canadians. Since

many people now avoid salt for fear of high blood

pressure, low thyroid and goitres are on the rise in

Canada.

ENVIRONMENTAL ESTROGEN PROTECTIONWe must avoid products containing environmental

estrogens such as cosmetics containing parabens, plastics with

BPA, synthetic hormones in dairy and meat, to name a few.

Detoxification of these estrogens using saunas and dry

brushing the skin will help to eliminate excess estrogens, as

does eating organic broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower,

cabbage and kale. Supplementing with the following nutrients

can help protect you from the dangerous effects of

environmental estrogens and balance hormones. If you have

any of the estrogen-dominant conditions mentioned earlier,

you need the following food-based nutrients every day. They

can be purchased separately or in combo.

Indole-3-carbinol (I-3-C) is powerful plant nutrient from

cruciferous vegetables. I-3-C prevents the conversion of good

estrogens to cancer-causing estrogens. I-3-C maintains a

healthy cervix, protects against HPV cervical lesions and

controls abnormal cell growth found in those with uterine

fibroids, breast lumps and endometriosis. It is very effective

for heavy periods caused by a thickened uterine lining.

D-glucarate is a powerful detoxifier of excess estrogens

via the liver. It helps to maintain healthy hormone balance.

Green tea extract contains polyphenols, catechins and

flavonoids shown to be protective against estrogen-related

cancers and it stops abnormal cell growth.

Curcumin is the yellow pigment of turmeric. This

powerful anti-inflammatory agent works to inhibit all steps of

cancer formation: initiation, promotion and progression.

Curcumin also supports the liver. Sulforaphane, has been

shown to stimulate the body’s production of detoxification

enzymes that eliminate environmental estrogens.

Sulforaphane is a powerful antioxidant and anti-cancer age.

GLUTEN-FREEThe Smart Way

By Kathy Smart

It seems that going gluten free is the entire craze right now!

I asked some of my clients and Facebook Fans why they went

gluten free. The responses? Well amazing . . . here take a look.

• Lupus and Thyroid Disease

• Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis

• Extreme Fatigue and Low Iron

• Having a child with ASD and ADD

• Lyme disease.

• Terrible eczema and psoriasis

• Celiac disease

• Migraines

• Irritable Bowel Disease

• Stubborn Belly Fat

• Constant stomach aches and frequent runs to the bathroom

• Extreme bloating, hives, major gas, diarrhea and depression

The list went on and on . . . so going gluten free can help all

of these issues and so much more but how do you go gluten free –

the smart way?

1. STICK TO THE BASICSI tell my clients to eat as close to nature as possible. Fresh

fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, fresh meats, eggs and gluten-free

whole grains like quinoa, buckwheat, amaranth, brown rice and

teff are all naturally gluten-free.

2. STAY AWAY FROM PACKAGED FOODSMany companies have jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon

and are simply switching out high glycemic, low nutrition white

rice flour and white sugar ingredients and then slapping the gluten-

free label on it. It may still be a processed food – gluten or not.

3. THINK TO YOURSELFIs this a food that is as close to nature as possible? Gluten-free

foods can be healthy when you stick to food in its most natural state

as possible. But what about bread and pasta? This is the question so

many ask. And I say, what about it? You can make delicious low

glycemic gluten-free bread out of bean flours, quinoa flours, brown

rice flours and more. There are so many amazing gluten-free

choices! The amount of gluten in wheat has sky rocketed. Our

bodies weren’t designed to digest so much gluten. So removing it

and replacing it with whole foods = health!

Kathy Smart is known as North America’s gluten free expert, is a TVshow host, chef, nutritionist, cookbook author and a gluten free celebrity. When not cooking up gluten free goodness in her kitchen she can be seenon CTV, Rogers TV, CBC and traveling across Canada spreading thegluten free good news! FOOD FOR THOUGHT

It seems that everyday there is another hot new novel functional

food that captures our attention and offers the fountain of youth or is

the next panacea for all of our woes. It is often a question of weeding

out the hype from the nutritional truth. There are a few new

superfoods that stand out to be truly exceptional and will surely

make their mark in the growing category of superfood nutrition.

SPROUTED CHIA POWDER, A NEW TWIST Most people have by now heard of chia. The Aztec running food

has become a staple for many and rightly so. This humble little seed

is one of the highest vegetarian sources of Omega-3. It is one of the

most balanced superfoods providing protein, noteworthy vitamin

and mineral profiles as well as both soluble and insoluble fibre and

thereby can increase satiety, curb hunger cravings and balance out

blood sugar levels when combined with a high glycemic meal. It is

an indispensable staple superfood for those on any weight

management program, for those with blood sugar issues or high

cholesterol.

What could be considered a new superfood however is

sprouted chia” sold in a cold milled powder form. Yes, it is still chia,

but it has undergone a very necessary transformation. Chia seeds are

notoriously mucilaginous and so are quite difficult to germinate

successfully. They require constant agitation and just the right

amount of moisture and temperature to fully germinate into a living

plant. It is this living plant form of chia known as ”sprouted chia”

that is the true superfood for there has been an actual chemical shift

in its nutritional makeup. Vitamins C and E go up by 900%, the

antioxidant score doubles and vital enzymes are dramatically

increased. It is also incredibly convenient to have a ready to go

stable powder that you can add to everything you eat with double the

nutrients of regular chia!

AUSTRIAN PUMPKIN SEEDSAlso new on the horizon are Austrian pumpkin seeds, known as

Styrian pumpkin seeds from the famous region of Styria, the

southeast state in Austria known as Steiermark. They are thick, dark

green and have a rich nutty flavour. These seeds come from the

heirloom Styrian pumpkin, which was introduced to Europe over

9,000 years ago from Peru and Mexico. The seeds contain

magnesium, iron, zinc, fibre, phytosterols, chlorophyll and

carotenoids, such as lutein. These pumpkin seeds are unlike anything

you have ever tried in North America and make an incredible

superfood snack, seed butter, milk, trail mix and are great for

smoothies.

LONGAN BERRIESLastly, keep an eye out for dried longan berries. This succulent

exotic fruit from Southeast Asia has been compared to the lychee

fruit and has an exquisite flavour with notes of citrus, melon and

mango. It is an excellent source of vitamin C and fibre. Longan has

been used in Traditional Asian Medicine for strengthening the heart

and spleen meridians providing increased vitality and energy ,as well

as used to calm the Shen, thereby decreasing stress and increasing

one’s life force and radiance. They are an exciting new superfruit

easily incorporated in the daily diet in smoothies, trail mixes or

simply enjoyed on its own.

We are all searching for strategies for prevention and optimal

wellbeing. Many of these superfoods surpass the nutritional profiles

of many of the foods that frequent our daily dinner plates. They

exhibit an impressive array of vitamins and minerals, high amounts

of fibre and a range of unique phytonutrients that offer antioxidants,

anti-inflammatory and anti-aging compounds.

20 HEALTHY DIRECTIONS October/November 2012

Five or six years ago most of us were using refillable plastic

bottles to keep up our daily hydration needs. A large percentage of

the population really had no idea many of the vessels we were

drinking from contained a chemical called BPA. Bisphenol A or

BPA as it is commonly know acts as an environmental estrogen and

once it is ingested it can disrupt proper hormone functioning, alter

genes and interferes with normal physical and behavioural

development.

Once the news of BPA hit the headlines it was like an over night

change and the eliminate the BPA fight began. Many companies

came to aid of concerned consumers by creating bottles of all sizes

and shapes made of stainless steel and glass. However, many

consumers did not like the fact the outside of their steel bottle would

get very cold, making it uncomfortable to hold on to. With all these

cold bottles came condensation and this was wreaking havoc on our

hands, clothes, bags and desks. Everything in the bottles path was

getting soaked. Some companies came up with a cover to help

remedy the cold issue but they could not solve the condensation

issue. Consumers were still left looking for the perfect solution.

Since then, a few companies have developed a stainless steel

double wall, vacuum insulated bottle that does away with the cold

hands and wet everything. In fact these bottles can even be used for

hot beverages, from tea and coffee to every cold beverage on the

planet. Regardless of temperature of the bottles contents you can not

tell on the outside weather it is hot or cold. Even on the hottest

summer day the contents will stay cold all day long, which is

something no single wall bottle can do.

We had our bottle on vacation with us in the Caribbean, we

were on the beach in full sun all day and our bottle still had ice inside

after 8 hours! On the flip side the contents won’t freeze either, leave

these types of bottles in your car on a cold winters night and the

beverage will not freeze.

Some even have included tea and ice strainers so the ice and

loose tea stay in the bottle not in your mouth or the nozzle. The next

time you are in the market for a new bottle visit your local health

food store or go online and look for an insulated solution.

Herbal teas are well recognized to have an active effect on

the human body. Depending on the plants used, their properties

can be digestive, diuretic, soothing, antiseptic, circulatory and

much more. Some herbal teas are the result of researched

formulas from wild and organically grown plants to provide

flavourful, health benefits. These herbal teas boast active

ingredients that improve on our quality of life and help maintain

a balanced body.

SYNERGY OF PLANTS FOR BETTER RESULTSHerbal formulas are designed to combine the synergy of

plants. Some of them have special properties which can help

reduce many discomforts. For instance, whorled mallow is

known to help regulate the intestine. Its properties come from its

mucilage which facilitates bowel movements without irritating

the intestinal mucosa. Combined with other plants, whorled

mallow can help us in different ways: it stimulates natural

drainage and elimination of toxins; it eliminates substances that

could contribute to the development of urinary system problems;

it cleans the intestinal tract by its laxative action and it can be a

remarkable ally for any weight-loss program.

MENOPAUSE AND HERBAL TEASMoreover, infusions can contribute to our well-being during

a key period of our life. Thus, the symptoms brought on by

menopause are usually the same for everyone: hot flashes,

profuse sweating, insomnia and anxiety. No matter how serious

the case, there are ways to help reduce those effects by using

herbal teas. Sipping a hot beverage isn’t usually what comes into

mind when dealing with those symptoms. Yet, plant infusion

allows us to extract its active substances. Once extracted, it can

be taken cold or mixed with fruit juice, while still retaining all of

its great natural properties.

Soothing and Healing

Herbal Teas

In order to ease the symptoms occurring within this life-changing

transition, some plants are especially recommended. Lemon balm and

skullcap are renowned for their appeasing qualities. They help reduce

anxiety and insomnia, thanks to their combined components. Sage

works great on diaphoresis: it reduces profuse sweating. Its use could

even result in memory enhancement according to some scientific

researches. Peony, on the other hand, reduces those unbearable hot

flashes. Finally, motherwort acts on palpitations by soothing the

nervous system.

DURATION AND FREQUENCY OF USESome plants can act upon ingestion (e.g. whorled mallow). But

others are recommended to be taken on a regular basis to help reduce

recurrent symptoms. Indeed, if you need to find a better sleep, for

example, it will be more helpful to take an herbal tea on a regular basis.

Herbal teas are also an important source of vitamins and minerals. So,

they can contribute to improve your energy and your over-all health

and well-being.

LETTING GO!

People are experiencing burnout like no other time in our

history for reasons unlike any we would ever expect. Between cell

phones, job demands, family responsibilities and our non-stop

commitments it is easy to see why. Stress can be defined as any

circumstance or experience that causes physical, and/or

psychological strain. Your brain responds to stress by sending a

signal to your adrenal glands. Your adrenals respond by releasing

adrenalin and then cortisol. This hormone cascade gives you that

extra burst of energy and the ability to maintain it so that you can

fight or run away from perceived threats. This was a helpful

response for us in earlier times, when we were running from a bear

or fighting in a battle. Nowadays, though, more and more of our

threats are mental or emotional and this response to stress isn't

always necessary, or even helpful.

With chronic stress serious health problems may develop. These

stress-influenced conditions include, but are not limited to:

• depression/anxiety

• diabetes/ hypoglycemia

• hair loss

• heart disease

• obesity especially around the middle

• fatigue

• ulcers

• reduced brain function

I would estimate that as many as 80% of the people coming to

see me are for symptoms that are at least partially stress-related!

So what can you do about it? I often say to my clients that you

must address the situation. For example if you have relationship

stress, take steps to improve communication and use resources such

as counsellors or coaches. If your job is not working for you create

a plan that will improve your working conditions or help you to find

a new position. Letting things stew is never helpful and often having

a simple step by step plan for change is very empowering.

SCHEDULE EXERCISE AND TIME FOR DEEPER RELAXATION

Be proactive on a daily basis by having a good program that

works for you; such as, cardiovascular exercise, tai chi, yoga,

meditation, prayer, relaxation techniques including visualization and

sound therapy.

IMPROVE SLEEP AND DO THINGS YOU ENJOYKeep regular sleeping hours and try to have 7-8 hours of sleep

every twenty-four hours. What works for one person will not work

for another. Make sure you find time for fun!

EAT A BALANCED DIETHaving a balanced diet high in vegetables and fruit, lean

and kamut helps to repair any damage caused by chronic stress.

Everyone has unique dietary requirements; some do better

vegetarian, while others have higher protein requirements. Find

a qualified health professional if you are unsure of what is

optimal for you. For everyone, it is essential to limit coffee,

refined sugars, processed and high sodium foods.

SUPPLEMENTS FOR THE ALARM PHASESometimes, I need to give supplements to treat the effects

of long term stress. The adrenal glands in the early stages of

stress release too much cortisol for extended periods of time.

We term this the “alarm phase”. Often the symptoms are feeling

wired but tired, memory loss, headaches, digestive complaints,

insomnia and reduced immunity. Herbs useful during this phase

are l-theanine and rhodiola. L-theanine has been shown to

reduce cortisol production and rhodiola is considered an

adaptogenic herb, increasing or decreasing adrenal output as

required. The goal during the alarm phase is to reduce and

regulate the cortisol being released.

AN APPROACH FOR LONG-TERM STRESSIf an individual experiences long-term stress the adrenal

glands start to become fatigued and stop producing enough

cortisol to manage daily activities. The symptoms of this stage

are fatigue, stress-intolerance, weight gain, anxiety, and

depression.

Many people tell me they feel like they cannot manage the

simple things in life without feeling overwhelmed and

scattered. The supplements I usually recommend are a b-

complex, vitamin C, rhodiola, licorice, as well as Siberian and

panax ginseng. Licorice supports the production of cortisol and

is a natural immune booster and anti-inflammatory. Siberian

ginseng is an adaptogen that works very well for women;

improving endurance, energy and the immune system. Panax

ginseng is very similar to siberian ginseng but can interfere

with women’s hormones; so, I tend to use it with men. A simple

four-point salivary test can be run to determine which phase of

adrenal dysfunction a person is in.

There are many natural options available that have been

proven to alleviate the symptoms of stress but remember to live

in the moment and most importantly find the joy available to

you right now.

I’ll get straight to the point – breast cancer, for the most

part, is a preventable disease. Yes, you heard it right – surprised?

How do we know this? Well, let’s take a look at the following

statistics. Breast cancer rates in North America are twice as high

as in South America, according to the American Institute for

Cancer Research. In fact, AICR scientists estimate about 4 out

of every 10 breast cancer cases in the US and Canada could be

prevented by maintaining a healthy weight, drinking less alcohol

and being more physically active. There is also convincing

evidence breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast cancer.

OBESITY RATES & ALCOHOL CONSUMPTIONARE HIGHER IN NORTH AMERICA

Obesity rates throughout South America are considerably

lower than in North America. In fact, according to WHO

statistics, 55% of Brazilians, for example, are within the Body

Mass Index “healthy” range of 18-24. Only 36 percent of North

Americans are within this range.

WHO figures also show the average adult in Brazil

consumes about 1.2 gallons (5.3 liters) of pure alcohol per year.

The average American adult consumes 2.1 gallons (8.1 liters) per

year.

WE EXERCISE AND BREASTFEED LESSWhen it comes to physical activity, the difference gets a bit

more startling. The percentage of Brazilians who are highly

active is 9 times the number of Americans -37% vs. just 4%.

And finally, according to La Leche League, 93 percent of

Brazilian mothers breastfeed their children, compared to 74

percent of American mothers.

The fact breast cancer rates in South American countries

such as Brazil are nearly half that of the US and Canada is a clear

reminder the everyday choices we make about our diet and level

of physical activity are completely relevant.

A FOCUS ON MORE PREVENTION NEEDEDWe have spent decades creating awareness about breast

cancer, including billions of dollars promoting screening and

early detection – yet cancer incidence has continued to rise

every year. Perhaps we should focus our resources on promoting

prevention. We could get the message out that a better

prevention prescription looks like this: women can reduce the

risk of breast cancer by making basic lifestyle changes such as

eating healthy, moving about more, staying lean, and drinking

less alcohol.

The question heard by most couples

after they get married is “When are you

going to have a baby?” For some, the road to

parenthood is easy and for others, there can

be a few bumps along the way. It becomes

even more frustrating when you hear that

people with poor habits (ie drinking,

smoking and eating poorly) get pregnant on

the notorious “first try” while you might be

a healthy person who watches everything

that goes into your body, yet cannot seem to

conceive. From irregular periods, difficult

PMS, heavy periods, fertility and

menopause the answer found in most

doctors offices is some form of “one size fits

all” pill in the form of synthetic hormones

that either suppress the natural rhythm of our

bodies or supercharges it.

My personal feeling is that most

“conditions” that relate to our menstrual

cycles are hormone imbalances that can be

regulated by balancing and supporting our

neuroendocrine system which consists of

our hypothalamus, pituitary, adrenal glands,

thyroid gland and ovaries. Each of these

glands produce hormones that affect the

other and it is the intricate dance of balance

between our “master glands” (ie pituitary

and hypothalamus), adrenal hormones

(cortisol and DHEA), “female” hormones

(FSH, LH, the estrogens and progesterone)

and our thyroid gland that affect whether we

will conceive. The other key organs that

need to be supported to be hormonally

healthy are the primary organs of

detoxification (ie liver, kidneys, colon, lungs

and skin). This is especially important in

recent years with the increase of chemical,

emotional and physical stress bombarding

our bodies – these influences are

contributing to declining fertility rates and

need to be addressed in couples.

USE PROFESSIONAL QUALITYSUPPLEMENTS

It is important to be on a good quality prenatal

vitamin with folic acid and essential fatty acids. It

is best to seek a professional opinion, as there are

many poor quality products on the market.

BE ASSESSED FOR HORMONAL BALANCE

I always run hormone testing on patients if

they have been trying for over 3 months.

Conventional blood work (estrogen and LH: FSH

ratio on Day 3 and progesterone on Day 21) is

combined with salivary hormone testing. If levels

are low, I use diet, herbs, supplements, acupuncture

and homeopathic remedies to balance the levels. It

is also important to assess the basics in women’s

health such as: folic acid, B12, thyroid function,

and vitamin/ mineral status in iron, zinc, calcium,

magnesium, iodine and selenium.

SPERM QUALITY & QUANTITYSperm quality is essential – zinc, coenzyme

Q10 and a good quality fish oil is key. Keep these

guys cool, so avoid hot tubs and laptops on your

lap!

Whether you have been “labeled” with

endometriosis, PCOS, low sperm counts, hormonal

imbalances, irregular menstrual cycles, and other

unexplained fertility concerns, naturopathic

medicine can help you. Patients who are preparing

for IVF, IUI or other fertility treatments are

encouraged to combine naturopathic support for

increased success. Trying to conceive can be an

emotional roller coaster that takes its toll on a

person psychologically and physically, and can be

a huge burden financially. Consulting with a

naturopathic doctor who is dedicated to helping

individuals and couples improve their health and

fertility can be the piece that solves the fertility

puzzle.

Christina Bjorndal has a thriving practice in Edmonton,Alberta. She loves helping couples conceive and shebelieves in a holistic approach to health with nutritionand lifestyle counseling as the foundation in maintainingan optimum balance in our overall well-being. Naturopath Listing Guide

A naturopathic approach to

fertility is based on the principle

of bringing a couple’s health back

in balance. With naturopathic

care, your entire health history is

assessed. I help my patients get in

tune with their body and

menstrual cycle. It is amazing

how many patients aren’t sure if

they ovulate and/or don’t even

know the length of their

menstrual cycle. In naturopathic

medicine, it is our philosophy to

treat the cause, to figure out what

is going on, and correct any

underlying hormonal imbalances.

From there, we use the healing

powers of nature to balance the

body by optimizing nutrition,

eliminating stressors in one’s

lifestyle, learning about your

cycle and treating underlying

health conditions.

GET IN TUNE WITH YOUR BODY

Find out when you are

ovulating. Many women think

this is on Day 14 (with Day 1

being the first day of flow);

however, often it is not.

Depending on the length of your

cycle it could be much sooner or

much later. Watch cervical flow

to be like egg whites, this is when

you are the most fertile. Check

your body temperature for a

slight elevation (a.k.a. basal body

temperature), and pay attention to

cramping.

HEALTHY DIET AND LIFESTYLE

Eat a healthy diet consisting

of 5 vegetable servings, 2-3

servings of fruit, nuts and seeds,

and adequate protein for your

weight. Avoid alcohol, sugar,

fried food and junk food. Get lots

of sleep and deal with stress -

practice healthy lifestyle

techniques such as exercise,

yoga, relaxation exercises, deep

breathing etc.

GHR

From the landmark book Grow Young withHGH comes the most powerful, over-the-counter health supplement in the history ofman. Human growth hormone was first discovered in 1920 and has long been thoughtby the medical community to be necessaryonly to stimulate the body to full adult sizeand therefore unnecessary past the age of 20.Recent studies, however, have overturned thisnotion completely, discovering instead that thenatural decline of Human Growth Hormone(HGH), from ages 21 to 61 (the average age atwhich there is only a trace left in the body)and is the reason why the body ages and failsto regenerate itself to its 25 year-old biological age.

Like a picked flower cut from the source, wegradually wilt physically and mentally andbecome vulnerable to a host of degenerativediseases, that we simply weren’t susceptible to in our early adult years.

Modern medical science now regards aging asa disease that is treatable and preventableand that “aging”, the disease, is actually a compilation of variousdiseases and pathologies, like a risein blood glucose and pressure todiabetes, skin wrinkling and so on.

There is a receptor site in almost every cell in the human body for HGH, so its regenerative and healing effects are verycomprehensive.

Growth Hormone first synthesized in 1985under the Reagan Orphan drug act, to treatdwarfism, was quickly recognized to stopaging in its tracks and reverse it to a remarkable degree. Since then, only the lucky and the rich have had access to it at the cost of $10,000 US per year.

The next big breakthrough was to come in 1997 when a group of doctors and scientists, developed an all-natural source product whichwould cause your own natural HGH to bereleased again and do all the remarkablethings it did for you in your 20’s. Now available to every adult for about the price of a coffee and donut a day.

The new HGH releasers are winning convertsfrom the synthetic HGH users as well, sinceGHR is just as effective (for anti-aging) is oral instead of self-injectable and is veryaffordable.

GHR is a natural releaser, has no known sideeffects, unlike the synthetic version and has noknown drug interactions. Progressive doctors admit that this is thedirection medicine is going, to get the body toheal itself instead of employing drugs. GHR is truly a revolutionary paradigm shift inmedicine and, like any modern leapfrogadvance, many others will be left in the dustholding their limited, or useless drugs andremedies.

It is now thought that HGH is so comprehen-sive in its healing and regenerative powersthat it is today, where the computer industrywas twenty years ago, that it will displace somany prescription and non-prescription drugsand health remedies that it is staggering tothink of.

The president of BIE Health Products, statedin a recent interview,“I’ve been waiting forthese products since the 70’s”. We knew theywould come, if only we could stay healthy and live long enough to see them! If you wantto stay on top of your game, physically andmentally as you age, this product is a boon, especially for the highly skilled professionalswho have made large investments in their education, and experience. Also with the stateof the health care system in Canada whichappears to be going into serious decline, it’smore important than ever to take pro-activesteps to safeguard your health. Continued useof GHR will make a radical difference in yourhealth. HGH is particularly helpful to theelderly who, given a choice, would rather stayindependent in their own home, strong, healthyand alert enough to manage their own affairs, exercise and stay involved in their communi-ties. Frank, age 85, walks two miles a day, plays golf, belongs to a dance club for seniors, had a girl friend again and doesn’t need Viagara, passed his drivers test and is hardly ever home when we call - GHR delivers.

Winter is on its way, and you know what that means. No, not

family, presents, big meals and skiing – though those are around,

too. The winter is a time when your body is under attack from

outside forces. It is a time when you are often outdoors, cold, or

wet. It’s also the time when most colds and flus are spreading

through your office or school.

Luckily, you have a defender: the body’s immune function.

Immunity is defined as “a biological term that describes a state of

having sufficient biological defenses to avoid infection, disease,

or other unwanted biological invasion.” Unwanted biological

invasion. Sounds scary. So doctor, doctor, give us the news. What

are we supposed to do to keep our immunity huge?

“About a hundred years ago, when pollution in its many

forms and various chemical toxins were not present, we could get

all that we needed nutritionally from our food,” says Wayne

Diamond, ND and owner of Diamond-Herpanacine Associates.

“But as the twentieth century brought thousands of pollutants into

our environment, no longer is good food pure enough to supply

what our bodies need to live. Quite simply, the human body

cannot fully absorb nutrients that are continually intermingled

with the vast amount of pollutants, toxins and pesticides that we

face on a daily basis.”

VITAMINS, MINERALS AND HERBS FOR THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

To counter-act nutritional deficiencies and to support the

immune system Diamond recommends specific vitamins,

minerals and herbs.

Vitamin A-beta-carotene stimulates overall immune function

by increasing the number of infection fighting cells in the body

and fighting off free radicals. It is also helpful in fighting off

infections and the harmful effects of stress.

Astragalus, ligustrum and echinacea are strong supporters of

immune function by increasing antibodies and white blood cell

while positively affecting interferon, one of the body’s natural

viral-fighting substances.

Zinc is also essential for a healthy immune system by

helping to build infection-fighting cells. Vitamin E is an

important antioxidant and immune builder. It works in the body

to stimulate the production of good cells that help fight off

bacteria as well as increase important proteins that help to destroy

viruses and bacteria.

Selenium boosts your immunity with its powerful

antioxidant effect and protects the integrity of the cells.

Last, but definitely not least, vitamin C is an extremely

important immune booster for many reasons. When taken daily,

studies prove this water-soluble vitamin can protect cells, fight

free radicals with its antioxidant properties, and increase the

COLD & FLU

production of white blood cells and antibodies. “Many of these

wonderful ingredients have been used worldwide for thousands of

years to heal and bring desired health results,” Diamond said. “I have

been a strong proponent of their safe and successful results for many

years.”

When taken in a formula, all of those proven ingredients will work

synergistically to help boost immunity and improve resilience against

colds and illness during the winter months.

Other fall and winter immune boosting tips are – get a lot of rest

(that means stop surfing YouTube until two in the morning), avoid bad

habits (smoking, excessive alcohol, excess spending), drink plenty of

water (Chug! Chug!), try to eat healthy (no, low-fat Oreos don’t count),

wash your hands regularly with soap and water and though baby, it’s

cold outside, don’t forget to exercise!

Wayne Diamond, ND created the award winning Herpanacine formula. Forover 22 years, Herpanacine has offered clear outbreak-free skin as an addedbonus to a healthy immune system. www.diamondformulas.com

ANTI-AGING

Live to be 200 years old? Impossible you say! Did you know,

that thousands of scientists, doctors, movie stars, athletes, politicians

and wealthy business people are taking a rare extract of an age-old

chinese herb and they are betting it will allow them to live to be 200

years-old and beyond. So, what do they know that we don’t?

In Dec 2010, Ronald De Pinho a researcher at Harvard gave

aged mice (the equivalent of 80 human years) a natural substance

and within a month those same aged, and on their last legs, mice

were running around like 40 year-olds. They had put on muscle,

grew back hair and were starting to reproduce.

In the August edition of Elle Magazine, the headline on one of

its featured articles reads, “Wanna Live to Be 200?” And in the

same month, Popular Science magazine writes about an anti-aging

scientist, Bill Andrews, Ph.D. in Molecular and Population Genetics

and CEO of Sierra Sciences, who runs mega marathons (50 to 100

mile runs) and comes in the top third of the finishers. Andrews is 59

and fully believes he will run a 7 minute mile at 130 years old.

Along with Andrews, thousands of people have been

regrowing their telomeres for about 5 years, and they are finding

their bodies getting younger and stronger, and their minds more

agile. They sleep better, feel better, have fewer colds and flus and

just generally are healthier. A new branch of biological science is

studying the DNA of the cell and more specifically the shortening of

telomeres as the cause of aging.

NOBEL PRIZE TECHNOLOGYIn 1984 Elizabeth Blackburn and her assistant Carol Greider of

the U of C, at Berkeley discovered the telomerase enzyme that

causes telomeres in the chromosomes in the nucleus of the cell to

lengthen. In 1999, Ms. Blackburn and Greider along with Jack

Slozak were awarded the Nobel Prize in Biology.

Move ahead to 1999 and we find Ph.D Bill Andrews, the mega

marathoner, has led his research team at Geron, a US based biotech

research company, in finding the gene that turns on the telomerase

enzyme, which allows the telomeres to regrow. About that time,

while searching for substances that would turn on the telomerase,

they tested an ancient herb from Inner Mongolia. In a ground

breaking manner they devised a patented method of extraction and

testing of a single rare molecule, which has resulted in the world’s

only available substance that will regrow telomeres.

By 2002, a major investor in Geron licenced the patented

molecule from them and commenced with 5 years of extensive

testing. Double-blind testing showed the molecule not only grew

telomeres in the chromosomes of everyone who took it but proved

its safety beyond any doubt. The resulting nutraceutical is a natural

extract form the herb astragalus.

Age related diseases start at about age 25 but don’t manifest

themselves until about age 40. Arthritis, cancer, heart and

cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stomach and bowel disorders,

erectile dysfunction, bone loss, failing eyesight, liver and kidney

malfunction . . . you name it are for the most part linked to the aging

of the body. Allopathic, conventional, medical doctors treat these

diseases with an array of prescription drugs, surgery and radiation.

Naturopaths, homeopaths and other natural health practitioners use

vitamins herbs, special supplements, massage and other modalities to

also control and bring relief to the human body. But, the clock keeps

ticking. And, our cells continue to make their inevitable way to the day

when they can’t divide anymore.

Users of telomerase activator report improved eyesight with

many having to have their prescriptions changed to a lesser power.

One of the first experiences people feel is increased energy and

stamina. They feel stronger, happier, and experience fewer colds and

flu. Erectile dysfunction in men and osteoporosis in women are two

age related diseases where great improvement has been reported.

Not all astragalus extracts are the same. Telomerase activator

(molecule #) 65 is a very rare occurrence in nature and does not exist

in most astragalus species. After its introduction in 2007, a number

of companies tried to jump on the bandwagon with claims of

telomere lengthening at a much lower cost. They did not do the

testing and verification of the molecule (or even find another source

of the telomerase activator) but have tried to associate themselves

with the result of the Geron technology.

TA Sciences, the company that is the sole company licenced by

Geron to make telomerase activator, tested 4 of the leading brands of

astragalus extracts and found that there was absolutely no molecule 65

in any of the brands. Astragalus and its extracts do have many life

enhancing benefits but growing your cell’s telomeres is not one of

them. As Andrews says, the only telomerase activator he takes is

telomerase activator (molecule#) 65. The reason is it works, is safe

and is the only tested, proven, approved and commercially available

telomerase activator in the world.

So will we live to be 200 years and beyond? The verdict is still

out and time will tell. What we do know is that those regrowing their

telomeres report amazing regression of their age related diseases far

beyond what any placebo could accomplish.

TA-65 is available in Canada through licenced doctors, clinics and betternatural health (food) stores. Core Natural Limited is the Canadian distributorfor TA-65. For more information and the list of studies, news articles andwhere to buy, go to www.corenatural.ca or phone 289-217-3004.
