As spring arrives, I am excited to share with you several new happenings within our organization as we continue our steadfast focus to better serve you, your family members, and our community.

We continue to develop and expand our clinical affiliation with Lahey Health, and I invite you to learn more about our partnership and our shared commitment of providing the best medical care close to home, when patients need it most. In this edition, you will learn how our clinical teams worked together to diagnose and treat a local woman in her fight against uterine cancer. Kathleen Rogers learned firsthand the benefits of having access to highly specialized, coordinated cancer care and treatment, right here in Nashua.

St. Joseph Hospital Orthopedics, in affiliation with Lahey Health, now has three fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons and a certified adult nurse practitioner to provide care for all your orthopedic needs. The practice is conveniently located on the St. Joseph Hospital campus, near the emergency department, with onsite imaging in close proximity. Our expert team of orthopedic specialists is focused on helping patients improve health and restore function so they may return to doing the things they enjoy. To find out more about our providers and their sub-specialty expertise, visit our website at ortho.stjosephhospital.com.

We have recently added a new gastroenterology practice to our network of specialty services. Fellowship-trained gastroenterologist Prasanna Gulur, MD, joined St. Joseph Hospital Gastroenterology at the beginning of March. Many of you may already know Dr. Gulur as he has been practicing in the local community for several years. Dr. Gulur offers consultation, evaluation, and treatment for all aspects of gastrointestinal and digestive disorders.

To learn more about our dedicated clinical teams and expanded specialty services, please visit stjosephhospital.com.

HEALTHY CHOICES • SPRING 2016 1

Kathleen Rodgers, 66, recently learned she could receive medical care from some of the best doctors in the Northeast without ever having to leave Nashua. When Kathleen was diagnosed with breast cancer 14 years ago, she sought treatment with oncologist Mary Voltz, MD, at the Cancer Center at St. Joseph Hospital. Recently, she met with her primary care doctor, Nicola Kernan, MD, at St. Joseph Hospital Family Medicine in Merrimack because she was experiencing post-menopausal bleeding. She was immediately referred to OB/GYN Denise Poulin, MD, at St. Joseph Hospital OB/GYN, who performed a hysteroscopy that revealed a precancerous polyp.

Dr. Poulin then referred Kathleen to Valena Wright, MD, a gynecological oncologist (GYN/ONC) with Lahey Health who was able to see her at the Lahey Gynecological Oncology Clinic at St. Joseph Hospital. “The Lahey doctors got involved very early on,” Kathleen stated. “I saw Dr. Wright about a week after my biopsy results came back. The clinic staff made the appointment for me, and I thought it was great that Dr. Wright came to me and I never had to go down to Burlington to see her. She already had my medical records at our first meeting, but she still spent a lot of time talking to me and listening to my medical history.”

After discussing Kathleen’s personal and family medical history, Dr. Wright referred her to Mary Schmitt, APRN, at the Cancer Center at St. Joseph Hospital for hereditary cancer risk assessment and further testing. Timely genetic testing revealed a predisposition to breast, ovarian, and other cancers. Kathleen’s health care team used this information to plan the best surgery and course of treatment for managing her increased risk of developing a new cancer.

A hysterectomy, performed at St. Joseph Hospital by Dr. Wright, showed early uterine cancer, which was completely removed. “It was a very good thing that I had the hysterectomy,” Kathleen said. “My team of doctors worked together so well; they really covered all the bases and made sure I was taken care of.” She notes how the entire staff provided

constant guidance through the medical process, and was especially happy to have the assistance of St. Joseph Hospital Nurse Navigator Kelly McAllister, RN. “Kelly was fantastic; so nice and caring. She’d say, ‘Call me anytime,’ and you could tell she really meant it and wanted to help. I knew if I called Kelly, she’d make sure the doctor got back to me right away.”

Once her treatment was complete, Kathleen and her husband moved to Virginia to be closer to family. Mary Schmitt, APRN, located a local hospital that offers specialized follow-up care. Although she now sees doctors in Virginia, Kathleen always recommends St. Joseph Hospital and its Lahey Health affiliated doctors to everyone she knows back in New Hampshire.

“The process went so smoothly for me,” she explained. “I would have driven to Burlington to see these specialists, but not having to make the trip took that pressure off my husband and me. I think for other women, who maybe have jobs and children and lots of responsibilities, having these Lahey doctors right in their hometown is just so convenient. It’s great to know they’re nearby, even if it’s just for a second opinion.”

St. Joseph Hospital’s clinical affiliation with Lahey Health brings top-quality care to the greater Nashua region, blending expert medicine with the finest local, familiar community health care. Patients and families now have access to the best practices, new treatments, cutting-edge technologies, and clinical trials from Lahey Hospital & Medical Center close to home. Lahey Health’s Academic Medical Center, which is affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine, was named one of the country’s 100 Top Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics™ in 2014. With easy, direct, and constant communication between St. Joseph Hospital and Lahey Health care teams, patients are supported by a broad range of medical and surgical expertise and have direct local access to Lahey specialists in cancer care, orthopedics, trauma services, and urology.

Lahey Health and St. Joseph Hospital share the same philosophy and commitment to providing the best medical care, close to home, when patients need it most. St. Joseph Hospital is accredited by DNV GL Healthcare, and our clinical collaboration with Lahey Health is further evidence of a commitment to bringing unparalleled quality care to patients and families in southern New Hampshire.
