Health Reporter Allison Coggan finds out more H:221.91pt H is face lights up as Mark McGuire shows off photographs of his fam- ily and a beloved pet dog. With Down’s Syndrome and a heart con- dition, the tablet Mark carries everywhere with him is much more than a way of dis- playing happy family photographs. Instead, it provides him with a vital way of communicating with the people who support him. Mark, 33, is one of 200 people with learn- ing disabilities who have become the first in the UK to try out a new app called My Health Guide. “I like it,” says Mark. My Health Guide, developed by software firm Maldaba and part of a trial with Hum- ber NHS Foundation Trust, picked up the Innovative Health and Social Care Techno- logy Award at the Health Expo this month. Installed on iPads and Android tablets, it allows people to record video and voice mes- sages, display photographs of their lives and the people important to them to new people coming into their lives. However, it also records vital information about their healthcare, ensuring new carers have all the information they need to look after people safely. Humber became the first in the country to introduce the app for people with mild to moderate learning disabilities after a sim- ilar app was developed for people with more profound health needs. Known as Matthew’s Book, the original iPad guide was developed by Ken Pugh of Miller’s Day Centre in Beverley to help Mat- thew Prosser, a young man with profound and complex health conditions who was unable to communicate. Trish Bailey, clinical care director at the trust, wondered if similar technology could be used to help people with such severe disabilities, could it be useful for helping people with less severe needs who still found it difficult to communicate. “We thought if we can do this for people with complex care needs, what could we do Lorenzo Gordon, who developed My Health Guide, was given a brief to develop a way which allowed users to communicate better with carers. It was also developed to ease the burden on staff, relieving them of the and someone was showcasing an A5 book used for similar purposes and I thought how far advanced we were compared to that. “We are at the forefront and leading the way on this.” As well as helping the users and staff, My Health Guide will also help families by removing the burden of having to explain to every new carer about their loved one’s needs, their likes and their dislikes. Sarah Hockley, a project worker at Miller’s, said they had been involved in the trial of Matthew’s Book and were now hopeful of similar success with My Health Guide. She said: “Everybody has a written sup- port plan but the more profound someone’s needs, the more pieces of paper you have to read through and the information is only as good as the day it is written. “I feel people are more likely to take the information using a tablet and when someone needs to refresh their memory about someone and a specific part of the care plan, the information is right there. “This should make it a lot easier to keep up-to-date and although people are just learning to use it, we can see lots of poten- tial with it.” Across the room, Mark swipes through his tablet, displaying his love of swimming and how one family member is about to have a baby. His father David, of Beverley, said My Health Guide was already making it easier for Mark to communicate with the people in his life. He said: “We’ve only had it a few weeks but he’s got family details on it as well as stuff about his health. But the main thing for us is that it could help his commu- nication skills. “We think it will be a good tool for him.” for people with mild or moderate learning disabilities?” she said. The trust secured grants from NHS Eng- land and SBRI Healthcare and teamed up with Maldaba to develop My Health Guide. task of wading through numerous files on their clients to find information which is instantly available on screen. Mr Gordon said: “It allows adults with learning difficulties to record and commu- nicate what is important to them about their health care and about their lives. “It allows them to record information which can then be communicated to health care professionals. “If a person has literacy problems, they can set up boxes and give them a picture around a range of topics like medication, hobbies or activities they enjoy.” He said people can record their thoughts and feelings, which can then be shared with professionals if they feel unable to verbalise them during meetings. “Say one woman was frightened of the dentist but felt unable to communicate that within the surgery, this allows them to pro- duce audio which can then be played to the dentist so they can tailor the best possible care, appropriate to the woman’s needs,” he said. “It gives people a voice and a sense of empowerment and involvement in their own health care.” As well as becoming the first trust in the country to trial My Health Guide, Ms Bailey said she was now considering the app’s potential in helping people with dementia or young people using children’s mental health services (CAMHS), allowing them to communicate in a format they are comfortable with at a time of their choosing.
