IntroductionThis Folder of Evidence of Learning is an integral part of Promoting the Prevention and Control ofInfection through the Health Care Associated Champions education programme. The folder, whencompleted, will contain a record of your learning as you progress through the programme. It will be kept and developed by you. It will be the means by which you can demonstrate learning and the achievement of learning outcomes and competencies for each of the Units. There is no formal assessment or exam.

What do we mean by competence?

It might be useful at this stage to think about what competence means. Much has been written aboutcompetence but for the purpose of this programme, competence is the ability to perform to arecognised or agreed standard. You will note that as you progress through the Units and theircompetencies that they set standards for knowledge, skills and attitudes in promoting the prevention and control of infection. Successful achievement of these will confi rm your role as Champion as refl ected in this programme. Each Unit with its specifi c competencies will allow you to demonstrate your ability to perform to the set standards.

Through the programme we will be asking you to participate in a range of workplace activities. Yourmentor/supervisor will be able to assist you towards confi rming your competence in these activities. These core competencies will enable you to promote the prevention and control of infection within the scope of your role as a Health Care Associated infection Champion, ‘hereafter referred to as Champion’. The core competencies relate to:

• Knowing risks;• Risk assessment;• Breaking the chain of infection (taking actions);• Awareness and familiarity with local and national policies;• Audit knowledge and skills;• Accountability and responsibility within the scope of the role; and• Compliance.

Whilst these core competencies are visited and revisited within the Units, each Unit will have specifi ccompetencies. These competencies are listed in your Folder of Evidence of Learning for each Unit.

Your Folder of Evidence of Learning is your record of your learning journey during the programme and will become the record of your completion of the programme, which you will present to your employer. You can also use it as a vehicle to plan and infl uence your future learning.

What should you include in your Folder of Evidence ofLearning?

As you progress through the Units we would expect you to be collecting evidence to indicate that you are completing both the workplace activities and achieving the specifi c Unit competencies. This willdemonstrate that you are thinking about and developing the Champion role. You may wish to keep anadditional folder or portfolio of ALL your activities and your learning as you go. However, what you will be required to do is to select from your total collection, relevant pieces of ‘best’ evidence which willdemonstrate that you have met the Unit(s) learning outcomes and that you have achieved thecompetencies for the Champion role. These then should be kept within your Folder of Evidence ofLearning. We have specifi ed at the end of each Unit what you should include in your folder.

How your Folder of Evidence of Learning is structured

The wallet allows you to fi le results of your workplace or online activities e.g. audits, thoughts, action plans.

Your Personal Introduction allows you to set the scene for your evidence and should include:

• A paragraph about the type of post you hold e.g. porter, doctor, ambulance personnel, physiotherapist, nurse;• A paragraph about where you work e.g. acute hospital setting, mental health setting, primary care setting, Welsh Ambulance Service;• A paragraph about the team of staff you work with; and• Any other brief information you feel would be helpful to set the scene for your evidence.

This is followed by a template for you to record your achievements. These Records of Achievement relate to each learning Unit. Each Unit Record of Achievement has headings that will help you document your progress and guide you in selecting the materials you should include in your Folder of Evidence of Learning. Within the template we have included details of:

1. Unit learning outcomes2. Unit competencies3. Evidence of learning to be included in the folder

This section contains a checklist of all the evidence required to demonstrate the achievement of your Unit learning outcomes and specifi c competencies. Ensure that you include all the evidence required. You may include additional evidence, which you feel refl ects your personal learning journey but be selective to ensure you provide the best evidence. We are interested in the quality of the evidence rather than the quantity.

It is important that you and your mentor/supervisor confi rm the achievement of 1-3 which includeslearning outcomes, competencies and production of evidence of learning. Your joint signatures at the end of each Unit’s Record of Achievement will indicate this.

The Record of Achievement has 2 other sections.

4. Refl ective AccountThis is an opportunity for you to record any learning you feel took place as a result of undertaking the workplace activities and content of the programme. It is important that you do not use up the spacedescribing what you did but rather the learning, which resulted from what you actually did.

5. Mentor/Supervisor commentsThis gives your mentor/supervisor an opportunity to comment on your progress and learning as well as your development into the Champion role. Comments on your role modelling abilities should also be in-cluded. This is your formal feedback from the mentor/supervisor and it should be a summary of the discus-sions, which have taken place during each Unit, highlighting your strengthsand development needs. You are now ready to start on your learning journey.
