The Decision Making Process
Step 1#Identify the problem The first step in the making a decision is
to identify the problem. When you know. The real problem, you can figure out
what decision to eventually make
Step 2# Consider your values Value are the beliefs that you consider
of great importance Considering your values will guide you
in the right direction as you make decisions
Step 3# list the options Options are different choices you can
make It may be helpful to ask for suggestions
of trusted positive influences Risking your health or the health of
others in NEVER an option
Step4#weigh the consequences What are the possible benefits and risks
for each option you have come up with? When you weigh the consequences of a
possible decision, you compare the benefits and risks of your opinions. Every option will have risks and/or benefits to consider
When considering your choices, you might use the H.E.L.P. Formula
Step 5# decide and act Choose the course that seems the best
and supports your values Make sure you are comfortable with
your decision and how it may affect you and others
If you are unsure about your decision, talk to a trusted adult
Some decisions may take longer to make than others
Step6# Evaluate your decisions After decision is made, these are some
questions you ask yourself to make sure you are making good decisions:
Did I uphold my values? Do my parents approve of my choice? Do I feel good about my actions?
Accountability When you make a decision, you are
responsible for making that choice and the consequences that go with it.
The H.E.L.P. Formula
H=(healthful)
E=(ethical)L=(legal)P=(parent approval)
Will my choice affect my well-being or the well being of others
Will my choice show respect for myself and other people
Will I be breaking the law? Is it legal for someone my age?
Would my parents approve of my decision?
