Social Justice Renegades Hackathon: An Innovation Competition

Social Justice Renegades Hackathon is a 3-day long innovation competition to design and build technology tools that respond to specific community needs related to social justice. This interdisciplinary competition will engage students and professionals from various backgrounds in Science Technology Engineering Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) and non-STEAM fields, local centers of higher education, community and industry partners, and the public. The goal is to increase awareness of social justice and use technology tools and collective expertise to address public health issues.

Bakersfield College is hosting this event as an open competition. Event organizers will gather information about technology needs in the local community related to public health and provide this information to competing teams. Competing teams will submit for judging a technical prototype, a community impact report showing the relation of the technology to community need, and a group presentation. The goals of this competition are to increase awareness of public health, augment student learning, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, improve community and industry partnerships, and further develop local talent capable of meeting local needs.

About OrganizersThis will be the second Hackathon at Bakersfield College; however, it is not the first one in Kern County or the nation. This event is a collaborative effort and has a strong planning team working on logistics to ensure that this event is a success. This Hackathon will leverage the resources of the following organizations:

Bakersfield College Social Justice Institute, whose mission is to create a collaborative space for the BC community to engage in conversation and analyze issues of social justice, equity and pedagogy in the community college. They’ll also study the impact of biases -- both intentional and unintentional -- in instruction, as well as other professional teaching and service contexts.

Bakersfield Student Government Association – This event was voted the best event of the year in 2017. It wouldn’t have been possible without engaging student clubs like Student Health and Wellness Advisory Committee Club and STEM Club.

The Bakersfield College Public Health Science, History, and Computer Science faculty will leverage the expertise from the community to act as judges and also assist students. Community partners have been instrumental in providing not only financial resourcesbut also expertise in the areas.

Participants Last and most important, the participants make the event happen! Your participation is what makes the Hackathon a success. Give it your all and we promise you will have a blast. Most importantly have fun too!
