The legislation that changed the landscape of occu-pational health and safety is 35 years old. This highly personal look at the beginning of the Act, resulting from Elliot Lake miners going on strike in 1974 and the resulting Ham Report, will leave you with a refreshed appreciation of the Act. The law is trending towards holding employers in-creasingly responsible for providing a psychologically safe workplace. On March 28, 2014, the Government of Canada tabled new legislation intended, among other things, to start the introduction of the Globally Harmonized System for Classifi cation and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). This legislation, included in Bill C-31, proposes amend-ments to the Hazardous Products Act which will even-tually allow Health Canada to replace the Controlled Product Regulations (CPR) with a new regulation, the Hazardous Products Regulation (HPR). Learn how the transition to GHS will impact your existing WHMIS programs, the timelines for the transition and key steps you can take now to prepare for GHS arrival.

Herb Schmidt will demonstrate effective containment and clean-up of exposed body fluids in the workplace. He will emphasize the proper utilization of safe chemi-cals and procedures to avoid cross-contamination and to ensure proper containment of associated health hazards. He will also expose products committing “green washing” – a trend for manufacturers to claim environmental friendliness through subversion and exaggeration.

Asleep at the Wheel: Learning From Fatigue-Related Tragediesivan szlapetis, B.Sc., CCPE, CEP, Ergonomist, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS)

Examine recent and historic tragedies in which shift-work, sleep disorders and fatigue were contributing factors. Although everyone experiences an occasional sleepless night, some people may be chronically sleep-deprived and not realize it. This session reviews some common causes of fatigue in the workplace and presents useful evidence-based tips and resources that may improve sleep quality and increase alertness on the job.

Do your workers understand how to calculate the fall window to ensure they have enough space below to safely be arrested from a fall? Learn what the current regulations are regarding equipment and your work-ers’ weight. Learn about the difference in force that a worker is subjected to depending on the equipment chosen. Rescue and suspension trauma will also be discussed. Live drop tests with different types of connecting devices will also be included.
