Hazards & Risks•A Hazard is something that may cause harm to yourself and others.
“Something that could happen”
•A Risk is the likelihood of the Hazards potential being realised.
“It actually does Happen”
•Almost anything can be a hazard, but it may not become a risk.
Example of a risk and Hazard.•A Trailing
electrical wire from a piece of equipment is a hazard!!
• If it is trailing across a walk way it is a risk!!
•It is less of a risk if placed around the edge ..
C.O.S.H.H•Stands For??•Control of Substances Hazardous to
Health
•This Law requires employers to control exposure to hazardous substances in the workplace.
•Provide a risk assessment for substances•Train and make employees aware of how
to use and store products used at work.•Think of at least 5 examples of potential
hazardous substances.........
Electricity at work act 1989•This act is concerned with the general
safety of the use of electricity:•It covers the use & maintenance of
electrical tools & equipment in the salon.
•Can you name the test required for equipment every 6 months??
•What would you do if you found electrical equipment to be faulty??
P.P.E•Personal Protective Equipment at work Regulations 1992
•You are required to use & wear the appropriate protective equipment or clothing, during chemical treatments in conjunction with the COSHH regs.
Work place policies•All salons have their own individual
rules and procedures laid down for their staff members to follow.
In pairs try and list as many as you can!!
•Smoking , eating, drugs •Personal presentation•What to do in the event of an emergency•Customer service/ client care•Salon etiquette•The use of chemicals•The use of equipment
Health & Safety @ Work act 1974•This act require all employers to
provide guidance and systems of work that are safe, practical and without risk to health
•It is your responsibility under the act to use the correct procedures and systems and report any problems within the system .
Industry Codes of Practice/Ethics• The correct procedures and
how we practice our trades are dictated to us by our institution, a governing body or a professional body.
• These are associations which an individual stylist/student/ salon owner chooses to join.
• The cost involved depends on level of entry, student membership is normally available and with your joining pack you will be given A code of Ethics or A Code of Practice.

Fire Extinguishers
•There are four types of fire extinguishers
•Water•Powder •Foam•Carbon Dioxide
Current fire extinguisher colour codes/uses...
• Water = Red= paper, wood, textiles, fabric etc
• Co2 = Black= electrical, flammable liquids
• Fire Blankets= For Wrapping around a person on fire
Accidents at work•It is very important to report and record any accidents at when at work this ensures that any patterns and causes of accidents can be identified.
•It is also a safeguard against any investigations or insurance claims which may arise.
