Shri J P NaddaUnion Minister forHealth and Family Welfare, GoI, At FICCI HEAL 2018

There is an urgent need to develop a forum for healthcare providers and professionals to engage in meaningful and interactive discussions with the government entities to enable the transformation and re-engineering of the Indian healthcare industry.

Healthcare has become an important cornerstone in India’s development plan, with various initiatives including Ayushman Bharat- Health and Wellness Centers (HWCs) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), Swachh Bharat, Digital India, Skill India, Start-up India, Make in India etc. In synergy, these initiatives will comprehensively address the healthcare challenges of India, such as reducing overall burden of diseases, lowering out-of-pocket expenditure, augmenting healthcare infrastructure and promoting access to quality care.

However, to provide assurance of healthcare for all, the government must recognize and address the rising concerns and sustainability of the private healthcare providers, which account for 70% of bed capacity expansion over the past decade and cater to 60% of in-patient care demands of the country.

As healthcare services and coverage expand, successful implementation will require a parallel concerted push towards quality assurance, appropriate governance and regulation, improving referral pathways as well as leveraging appropriate technologies and innovations at all levels. This will be possible only with effective collaborations between all the stakeholders, including the private sector.

FICCI HEAL 2019 is an endeavor to bring together all the relevant stakeholders to deliberate on tackling immediate as well as long-term challenges and create a comprehensive roadmap to help accelerate India’s progress towards building a truly healthy nation. The Conference would be a conglomeration of CEO’s, policy makers, national and international leaders from healthcare and allied industries.

Healthcare has become an important cornerstone in India’s development plan with the government focussing on several programmes aimed to improve health holistically. But, the healthcare industry is struggling with multi-faceted challenges related to governance and regulation, lack of quality standards, financial viability, inadequate reimbursement rates for services, irrational price caps, rising costs of human resources and other requisites for delivering care, constant advancements in science demanding investment in upgraded technology for best possible patient care and a rising trust deficit.

CEOs Plenary Session will bring together seasoned CEOs from across the healthcare industry to deliberate on the way forward to ensure sustainable growth of the industry in the country.

2:30 Pm – 4:00 Pm Panel Discussion i – “rE-ENgiNEEriNg BuSiNESS mODELS iN HEALtHCArE”

Access to health services is a basic need for all individuals. Given India’s huge population and highly skewed distribution of wealth and resources, its healthcare sector faces an additional challenge of reshaping itself to expand its reach across geographies and economies, increase affordability in the face of rising costs of input and limited manpower, without compromising on quality. The government and the healthcare sector now need to work together to make this initiative operationally and financially sustainable and effective.Panellists in this session will discussthe unique position of Indian healthcare sector and deliberate on the required innovative outlook and business models to develop tailored effective solutions.

Innovations, with the advent of disruptive technologies in healthcare delivery, constantly create evolved patient-focused and efficient platforms for care delivery. Innovations have also demonstrated potential to reach a cross-section of patient population, enhancing patient outcomes, quality of care, patient safety as well as cost efficiency. Further, mobile- and internet-based information solutions and care models have significantly changed the terms of engagement between individuals and the healthcare system. This new order is emerging as the foundations of Heath 4.0. Immediately following discussion on emerging business models that can transform the health industry, panelists of this session will deliberate on strategic scale-up and widespread adoption of path-breaking innovative healthcare delivery models, to help correct the current imbalances in healthcare delivery in India.

In India, healthcare sector is the fifth largest employer- both in terms of direct and indirect employment. With a rise in ageing population and growing disease burden, coupled with nation-wide implementation of Ayushman Bharat, the demand for healthcare services is expected to surge further, hence creating more opportunities for employment generation. FICCI estimates that we need additional 10 lakh MBBS doctors, 1.2 lakh Specialists, 20 lakh nurses and 30 lakh paramedics and healthcare technicians on an immediate basis.

The session will involve discussions on critical role of the healthcare in employment generation as well as what innovative measures can be taken up for new job creation, skill development, talent management and retention in the sector.
