EXERCISE KEEPS YOUR BRAIN FIT TOO
The American public continues the ever-increasing trend
of adopting sedentary lifestyles and obesity. Many of our
schools are cutting physical education classes across the
country despite scientists having the strongest evidence in
human history that exercise is critical in supporting human
health. Although we are seemingly not prioritizing fitness and
exercise, most of us recognize and are aware of the fact that
exercise is good for us and should be an important part of a
healthy lifestyle. Something that many of us don’t consider
though is the mental impact of
physical activity.
Evidence is emerging that
exercise can significantly
prevent age related cognitive
decline. New studies continue
to support the belief that both
dementia and Alzheimer’s
can, to some extent, be
prevented or the progression
curtailed with an appropriate
exercise regime. One study
suggests that after one year
of mid-life aerobic exercise
there were significant changes in associated brain volume
of the affected brain structures as well as improved spatial
memory. There is even evidence to suggest that it works as a
preventative measure too. Just one hour of exercise a week
can reduce your risk of dementia by as much as 50%. Not
only does exercise help with cognitive and memory decline,
but also has an effect in depression. When you exercise, your
body releases endorphins which interact with your brain and
reduce your perception of pain as well as provide a positive
feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. For example,
the feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as
“euphoric.” That feeling, known as a “runner’s high,” can be
accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life.
BUTTER IN YOUR COFFEE??? Have you ever wondered why there’s so many
people talking about putting butter in your coffee?
Well there’s actually a point to it that might make
a big difference in your energy levels or waist
line. When people
consume coffee in
the morning with a
high fat source like
butter, coconut oil,
heavy whipping
cream (or I’ve even
heard of a raw egg)
it takes the place of their breakfast and leaves
them feeling satisfied and not hungry. The lack of
sugar that these offerings provide have the body
(and brain) operating off of a different energy
source (different than the normal sugar based
energy) which could lead to increased energy and
believe it or not, increased fat burning throughout
your morning. The next time you’re in our office,
ask us about our favorite choice of coffee!

THE CORPORATE CHIROPRACTOR®
Research and experience has revealed that chiropractic care reduces healthcare utilization and cost, and increase patient satisfaction. Further evidence has shown that corporate on-site chiropractic clinics have improved those param-eters even more significantly. The Corporate Chiropractor® program will fully implement a chiropractic physician into your corporation to provide chiropractic care, soft tissue therapy, ergonomics/work sta-tion consultations and strain/sprain preventative pro-grams. Our on-site care program reduces recordable rates and worker’s compensation claims by focusing on soft tissue discomforts and injury preven-tion. In 2006, OSHA provided a ruling and documentation
stating that Active Release Techniques® (A.R.T.) is a form of movement-based massage. OSHA deems massage tech-niques to be a form of First-Aid and not a medical treat-ment. If the employee has a discomfort, or if administered in a prevention format, A.R.T. is considered First Aid, not a recordable treatment. If the employee also receives med-ical treatment, a job transfer, restricted work activity, or days away from work, it would then be considered a recordable injury. The A.R.T. provider and the safety manager/human resources department work in conjunction to follow the correct care path for each em-ployee. This will decrease the company’s worker’s compensa-tion costs considerably.

SITTING: WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS
Over the past year, you may have read an article or
watched a news clip on how sitting is the new smoking.
While it may seem like sensational reporting meant to
draw you in, the truth is that we
are sitting down more than ever
before in history and an abundance
of research has shown that it is
detrimental to our health. Sitting
has become so prevalent and
so pervasive that we don’t even
question how much we’re doing it.
And, everyone else is doing it, so it
doesn’t even occur to us that it’s not okay. In that sense,
sitting has become the smoking of our generation. We now
spend more time sitting throughout the day than we spend
sleeping. This type of sedentary lifestyle is literally killing us.
Studies have shown that sitting shortens life expectancy,
and is associated with increased incidence of heart
disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Research
has also shown that sitting is an independent risk factor for
these conditions; meaning exercise alone will not decrease
your risks. What does make a difference is nonexercise
activity. There’s a difference between official exercise
activity like running, biking, or lifting weights, and so-called
nonexercise activity, like walking to your car, mowing your
lawn, or simply standing. In other words, you need to take
every opportunity you have, throughout the day, to get out
of your chair.
Here are a few simple suggestions you can do at work and at home:• Take active micro-breaks. Getting up for a minute or
two at least once an hour can make a huge difference.
Studies have also shown that it increases productivity.
• Stand while talking on the phone or during a conference call.
• Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
• Walk or ride your bike to work. If you do drive, park farther
away.
• Consider getting a standing desk and change your
working position throughout the day.
