Glossary• An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races

organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) consisting of a 2.4 miles (3.86 km) swim, a 112 miles (180.25 km) bike and a marathon (26 miles 385 yards, 42.195 km) run, raced in that order and without a break.

• Bruise: to develop or bear a discolored spot on the skin as the result of a blow, fall, etc.

• Concussion: Pathology. injury to the brain or spinal cord due to jarring from a blow, fall, or the like.

• Shivering: to shake or tremble with cold, fear, excitement, etc.• Skin rash: any red eruption of the skin.• Blister: a thin vesicle on the skin, containing watery matter or serum, as from a

burn or other injury.• Frostbite: injury to any part of the body after excessive exposure to extreme

cold, sometimes progressing from initial redness and tingling to gangrene.• Aching: causing physical pain or distress: treatment for an aching back.

Glossary 2 • Life span: the longest period over which the life of any organism or

species may extend, according to the available biological knowledge concerning it.

• Acute: extremely great or serious; crucial; critical.• Smallpox: an acute, highly contagious, febrile disease, caused by the

variola virus, and characterized by a pustular eruption that often leaves permanent pits or scars: eradicated worldwide by vaccination programs.

• Stroke: something likened to a blow in its effect, as in causing pain, injury, or death; an attack of apoplexy or paralysis.

• Halt: to stop; cease moving, operating, etc.
