The Eldercare Workforce Alliance, a group of 28 national organizations joined together to address the immediate and future workforce crisis in caring for an aging America, is grateful for your work to strengthen the workforce caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD).
As you know, the Institute of Medicine, in its critical report Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce, called for immediate investments in preparing our health care system to care for older Americans and their families. In response, we formed the national Eldercare Workforce Alliance – representing consumers, family caregivers, the direct-care workforce, and healthcare professionals – to propose practical solutions to strengthen our eldercare workforce and improve the quality of care.
We are committed to addressing the workforce shortage and applaud work of the Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Research, Care, and Services, especially the attention paid to supporting a well-trained workforce. The panel is critical in meeting the needs of individuals and caregivers coping with the consequences of Alzheimer’s disease.
Despite the critical role of services and supports, we know that the workforce is not able to meet the demands of our growing older adult population, especially given the challenges and projected surge of older Americans with ADRD. Lead the world’s largest Alzheimer’s organization, with revenues of more than $280
million, more than 80 Chapters and nearly 300 offices nationwide. Responsible and
accountable for all organizational strategy, operations and outcomes, including: mission
delivery through advocacy and public policy, care and support for persons with dementia
and their families, information, communications, research and other medical-scientific
endeavors as well as revenue development. Report to the Alzheimer's Association Board
of Directors.
Led nationwide organizational discussion, planning and implementation of significant
organizational changes to advance internal coordination and maximize revenue
development for the organization, facilitating increased reach of programs and
focusing attention on Alzheimer's disease externally like never before. The changes
were adopted with strong consensus and have positively altered the strategic pursuits
and operational success of the Alzheimer’s Association.
Led changes across the organization, including Alzheimer’s Association chapters,
that have aligned the entire organization on the basis of a single nationwide strategic

advance the mission. Plan goals and primary activities include raising attention to
Alzheimer's, increasing reach of care and support to people with the disease, their

Oversee the broadest and deepest set of program offerings for persons with dementia,
their caregivers and families in the United States and the development of new
programs to better meet the needs of constituents through an Association-wide
common program plan and the multi-year strategic plan. Programs provided by the
Association range from those for individuals with early stage Alzheimer's to
programs designed to support caregivers of loved ones at a late stage of disease.
They also include online communities and programs as well as a one-of-its-kind free
24/365 helpline serving 250,000 Americans per year, care consultation, wandering
support, and many other services for those facing the effects of dementia.
Oversee management of the largest private non-profit research program in
Alzheimer's disease, operating internationally to provide direct grant funding to
researchers, to convene researchers from all sectors in a variety of forums to advance
outcomes through sharing of data, to develop collaborations among researchers both
domestically and internationally, to develop tools to facilitate the Alzheimer's disease
research community in achieving more rapid outcomes and to identify and address
gaps in research functions that would otherwise not be filled.
Initiated and continue to oversee the first ever nationwide paid and earned media
campaign to raise public understanding of the realities of Alzheimer’s disease and the
consequences of inaction, as well as communicate the nationwide availability of best
in class support from the Alzheimer's Association. The campaign has made
significant gains in media coverage and has quantifiably increased both public
attention to Alzheimer's disease and reach, including more than 1.3 million monthly
visitors to the Association's award-winning website, alz.org, and demand for services
from Alzheimer's Association chapters nationwide.
Led changes in what is now the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference,
with the Association taking on full leadership, converting from a biannual to an
annual format to advance the exchange of Alzheimer science more rapidly and to
solidify the meeting as the leading science platform for media reporting of
Alzheimer's advances. Participation in this world's largest Alzheimer's research
gathering now annually includes approximately 5,000 researchers and others from
across sectors, supported by government, private industry and non-governmental
organizations from more than 60 countries.
Initiated a new emphasis on the importance of public policy to change the course of
Alzheimer's disease. Through this emphasis, the organization successfully led public
efforts to work with federal leaders to include Alzheimer's treatments in the Medicare
Part D formulary, to have early onset Alzheimer's included in the Compassionate
Allowance Initiative of the Social Security Administration and to enact the National
Alzheimer's Project Act.
With the National Institute on Aging, spearheaded the creation of the first new criteria

Carol Steinberg Carol Steinberg is currently serving as acting chief executive officer of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing optimal care to individuals with dementia and their families. Prior to this appointment in January 2013, she was executive vice president of AFA since the organization’s founding in February 2002, contributing significantly to its growth and helping to guide the development of its programs and initiatives over the past decade. Ms. Steinberg oversees all foundation operations, including executive and administrative functions, staff oversight, advocacy, programs and services and communication strategies. Michael Wasserman, MD, is a Geriatrician and former co-founder of Senior Care of
Colorado. In addition to caring for many patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, he has actively
spoken on the topic for many years and has participated in clinical research. He has also
been active for many years lecturing to caregivers on behalf of the Colorado Alzheimer’s
Association. In 2008, Dr. Wasserman was instrumental in developing the MESA project
(Medicare Experts/Senior Access) which brought expertise to physicians in rural
Colorado in regards to caring for the elderly with Alzheimer’s Disease. He served as
Co-Chair of the Colorado Alzheimer’s Coordinating Council, which developed a state plan
for addressing the growing number of people with the disease. Dr. Wasserman is also a
member of the State of Colorado’s Long Term Care Advisory Committee, which focuses on a
population in the state that includes a large number of people with Alzheimer’s Disease. He
also served as Colorado’s lead delegate to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging.
In 2001, Dr. Wasserman co-founded Senior Care of Colorado, which became the
largest privately owned primary care geriatric practice in the country. He previously was
President and Chief Medical Officer for GeriMed of America, a Geriatric Medical
Management Company located in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Wasserman is a graduate of the
University of Texas, Medical Branch. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at UCLA. He spent five
years with Kaiser-Permanente in Southern California where he developed a Consultative
Geriatric Medical model. He is past chair of the American Geriatric Society’s Managed Care
Task Force and presently serves on the Public Policy Committee. He was formerly a Public
Commissioner for the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission. Dr. Wasserman remains
active in the community and has served on the Board of Directors for Denver Hospice for
the past 13 years.

GRANTS:2008-20012, $1.6 million in two awards for The Colorado M.E.S.A. (Medicare Experts/Senior Access) Initiative. This grant project, funded by the Colorado Health Foundation, was an innovative collaboration between Senior Care of Colorado and the Alzheimer's Association Colorado Chapter. The project's goals were to increase the quality and accessibility of healthcare for seniors under the Medicare program and to increase the confidence and satisfaction of primary care physicians in treating seniors with some of the most difficult and co-existing health conditions throughout the state of Colorado.

BIOSKETCH FOR MICHAEL R. WASSERMAN, M.D.
Doctor Michael Wasserman is a Geriatrician in Woodland Hills, California. In 2001 he co-founded Senior Care of Colorado, which became the largest privately owned primary care geriatric practice in the country, before selling it to IPC in 2010. He previously was President and Chief Medical Officer for GeriMed of America, a Geriatric Medical Management Company located in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Wasserman is a graduate of the University of Texas, Medical Branch. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at UCLA. He spent five years with Kaiser-Permanente in Southern California where he developed a Consultative Geriatric Medical model. He is past chair of the American Geriatric Society’s Managed Care Task Force and presently serves on the Public Policy Committee. He was formerly a Public Commissioner for the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission. Dr. Wasserman actively supports the Wish of a Lifetime Foundation and previously served on the Board of The Denver Hospice. He has spoken extensively and been published on a variety of topics involving Geriatrics, Alzheimer’s Disease, Practice Management and Managed Care.
