Health bars are becoming popular products to buy online, especially since they are typically meal-replacements that are shelf-stable. Online health bar sales totaled $80 million during the first seven months of 2017, which is 60% greater than last year. Whey health bars generated the most sales during this period, but health bars from the other category are growing the fastest. 80% of the Other category is comprised by RxBar, which is the fastest growing health bar brand, focusing on simple ingredients.

Quest Nutrition bars lead the health bar category with a quarter of all online sales. Rxbar, which launched in 2013, already ranks second among top brands for market share in this category online. While more than half of the top brands fall into the whey health bar category, a couple of plant-based bars make the list, like CLIF Bar and Lenny & Larry’s. Julian Bakery, a small, locally-owned business, is on par with health industry giants like Power Crunch and MusclePharm.

Rxbar is the fastest growing brand online, with sales up 5x year over year. The brand promotes a ’No B.S.’ product and labels all the ingredients on the front of the packaging. Rise Bar, which doubled sales since last year, also promotes the number of ingredients used. Meanwhile, Gatorade’s NFL-approved recover bars are experiencing tremendous growth online. Brands that promote low-calories, like Atkins, ThinkThin and Simply Protein, are also experiencing healthy growth.

Isagenix has the highest conversion rate of any health bar brand online. This means that 15% of consumers that look at Isagenix bars online end up buying the product. Isagenix promotes a diet for weight loss, similar to Atkins, which has an online conversion rate of 9%. Gatorade and CLIF Bar, two mainstream brands, also have high conversion rates. High conversion rate can indicate strong advertising and product pricing.

Bulk retailers like Costco and Jet.com sell as many health bars as category-specific retailer, GNC.

The top search terms that lead to health bar purchases are ‘quest bars’ and ‘protein bars’. This means that brands looking to boost share in this category might consider including the word ‘protein’ in their products’ names.
