Our pharmacy tries to make patient customers out of

customer-patients.

IT’S AS SIMPLE AS A-B-CA. If you have your prescription with you, go to the ordering window to the left of the pick-up counter.

B. If you want to consult the pharmacist, first go to the privacy consultation window on the right side of the pick-up counter and around the corner of the pharmacy department.

C. Ask when ordering how long it will take to fill your prescription. It usually will have been verified with your physician or refilled and be waiting for you.

IT ALWAYS IS A PLEASURE TO SERVE YOU AS SPEEDILY AND ACCURATELY AS POSSIBLE.

If you decided to keep a sleep diary, what would you write? “I sleep eight hours every

night but I am always tired the next day.”

“My spouse is always complaining that I snore too much and sometimes I stop breathing.”

“I don’t remember part of my drive to work because I was so sleepy.”

“ I wake up multiple times to go to the bathroom.”

“I can’t stand these head-aches anymore.”

“I never wake up feeling refreshed.”

All of these situations are possible symptoms of sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing stops during sleep.

Sleep physicians attempt to solve sleep apnea prob-lems through the use of a CPAP machine, but often times people using a CPAP machine find it very ob-trusive, uncomfortable to wear and are disturbed by the noise it makes. In turn, the machine sits by the bed, untouched, and the apnea continues to invade a good night’s sleep, which takes a toll on your overall health.

Rebecca Taylor, DDS offers a comfortable alternative: a retainer-like device that opens up your airway.

The FDA-approved device, also known as a mandibular appliance, moves the jaw forward slightly to open the airway and allow normal breathing.

“When you treat some-one who is not breathing with CPR, before you give a breath, you tip their head back and tilt their jaw for-ward. WHY? Because this positioning of the head brings the tongue forward and off the back of the throat, thus opening up the airway, ” Dr. Taylor explained.

“The mandibular appli-ance works in much the same way; it holds the jaw in a comfortable forward position, clearing the airway, and helping people breathe easier at night.”

Comparing sleep apnea to the need for CPR may sound extreme, but as Dr. Taylor explains,

“When you stop breathing in your sleep, it’s a huge deal. You can last days without food and

water, but you can only last minutes without oxygen. This is one reason why heart attacks occur at night.”she said.

Consider her statement in terms of sleep apnea: Each time you stop breathing while you sleep, you deprive all of your body systems — includ-ing your heart and brain — of several seconds of oxygen. Over time, your physical condition is affected. You continuously look and feel tired, your physical appear-ance becomes haggard, you may experience a downturn in your mood and thought processes and you may notice negative effects in your work performance andrelation-ships with friends and family.

Additionally, sleep apnea is related to diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, thyroid issues, erectile dysfunction, ADHD, fibromyal-gia, weight gain… the list goes on.

And on the roadways, falling asleep at the wheel can lead to fatal accidents. In fact, more people are injured from sleep deprived accidents than drunk driving.

With this infor-mation and your personal sleep history in mind, the proverbial ball is in your court. Take action? Or continue to sleep poorly and suffer potentially life-altering conse-quences?

“ It is estimated that 80-90% of people with sleep apnea are undi-

agnosed, and are sleeping every night with oxygen de-ficiency. In fact, one of the biggest symptoms of sleep apnea is snoring. But don’t let that fool you, just because you don’t snore doesn’t mean you do not have sleep apnea.” If you’re wondering if you have sleep apnea, Dr. Taylor can provide you with a take-home sleep monitor to record your breathing. The lightweight monitor is easy to use in the comfort of your own bed, it’s affordable, and you simply return it to her office the next day.

Dr. Taylor notes that com-pared to a CPAP machine, her neuromuscular-positioned sleep appliance is not bulky, it does not make noise and can reduce snoring sounds, it does not restrict sleep po-sitioning ( you can sleep on your side, stomach, or back), and it’s easily packed in a suitcase for travel. Because the mandibular appliance works so well and sleep apnea is considered a health con-dition, medical insurances usually cover the cost of the appliance minus any deduct-ibles.

Dr. Taylor encourages anyone interested to visit northwestdentalsleep.com to learn more about this amaz-ing, life-changing device.

PSYCHOTHERAPY & PSYCHOANALYSIS (CONT.)MICHAEL ELDER, LMFTBrief Targeted Psychotherapy. Targeted therapy begins with identifying the target. This is done by answering one of two questions. 1) Is there an event or memory from your past, even if vague or fragmentary, that continues to affect your life in non-productive ways? 2) What do you do (including say or think) in your life that you would like to domore of or less of? If you have an answer to either of these questions, we can develop a treatment plan that includes assessing and consolidating your strengths, exploring the target memory or behavior, and then addressing the target in ways that create the desired change.
