HAMSCI is an integrated Health and Medical Sciences program that is designed to expand

course options for students who are interested in robust Health and Medical Sciences

pathways in Loudoun County Public Schools.

This program will be delivered through comprehensive courses of study that prepare

students for successful transition to postsecondary education and careers.

HAMSCI will be offered via a cohort and will start in Grades 9 - Grade 12 at Park View High

School.

HAMSCI will focus on Therapeutic Services, Diagnostic Services, Health Informatics, Support

Services and Biotechnology Research and Development pathways.

What is HAMSCI?

STM and PVH students (n = 566) were surveyed via email in early 2020 based upon their interest in taking one of the following three options:

- Option #1: Construction Technology / Materials & Processes- 34.45% of students said they would be interested (YES)- 65.55% of students said they would not be interested (NO)

- Option #2: Electronic Systems / Energy & Power- 42.23% of students said they would be interested (YES)- 57.77% of students said they would not be interested (NO)

- Option #3: Building Management I and II- 34.28% of students said they would be interested (YES)- 65.72% of students said they would not be interested (NO)

Why offer HAMSCI?

Some students suggested an interest in a Health and Medical Sciences course with the following qualitative responses:

“More HEALTH options for Career because we already have a decent enough of STEM. We do have teacher cadets, broadcast journalism, and AP-Arts but we fall apart with the more diverse and specific courses”

“I would like to see more medical courses”

“Medical related classes”

“A career courses that i would like to see offered at Park View HIgh School would be something in the medical department”

“Labs that have to do with medicine and chemicals”

“Law careers or medical courses”

Why offer HAMSCI?

● Improve academic achievement of students in the cohort;

● Increase completion of dual-enrollment and honors-based courses;

● Provide work-based experiences for students through strong partnerships with businesses;

● Increase high school graduation rates;

● Reduce dropout rates;

● Increase enrollment and retention in postsecondary education;

● Increase the proportion of students completing a college and career ready curriculum in high school;

● Reduce the proportion of students requiring remediation in college;

● Increase the number of industry certifications awarded to high school students; and

● Increase the number of graduates employed in high-wage, high-demand and high-skill health science careers.

HAMSCI Outcomes

Graduates of the Health and Medical Sciences Career Institute (HAMSCI) must achieve one or

more of the following benchmarks:

1) industry certifications Examples: Certified Physical Therapy Aide (CPTA) Examination, AAPC Medical Coding

Examinations, Certified Optometric Assistant (COA) Examination, etc.

2) collaboratively designed or mutually approved end-of-course tests

3) college placement tests

4) student portfolios reviewed by a team of high school, college faculty and/or

business professionals

All rising Grade 9 students in Loudoun County Public Schools may express interest in attending HAMSCI.

Students must commit to attend PVH as a matriculated student from grade 9 through 12.

Eligible students will express interest during a defined window. Offers would be determined via a random lottery each spring before the next school year.

Students will learn how to manage office activities, enhance communication and employability skills, identify legal and ethical issues in healthcare practices, and manage financial activities. Course Description: In this course, students explore concepts of biology and medicine as they take on roles of different medical professionals to solve real-world problems. Over the course of the year, students are challenged in various scenarios including investigating a crime scene to solve a mystery, diagnosing and proposing treatment to patients in a family medical practice, to tracking down and containing a medical outbreak at a local hospital, stabilizing a patient during an emergency, and collaborating with others to design solutions to local and global medical problems.

Course Description: This course introduces the student to a variety of healthcare careers and develops basic skills required in all health and medical sciences. Students identify the key elements of the U.S. healthcare system and explore basic healthcare terminology, anatomy and physiology for each body system, pathologies, diagnostic and clinical procedures, therapeutic interventions, and the fundamentals of traumatic and medical emergency care. Instruction emphasizes safety, cleanliness, asepsis, professionalism, accountability, and efficiency within the healthcare environment. Students also begin gaining job-seeking skills for entry into the health and medical sciences field.

Course Description: Students examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis in the body. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal Maniken®; use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration; and take on the roles of biomedical professionals to solve real-world medical cases.

Course Description: Students follow the life of a fictitious family as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Students explore how to detect and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; evaluate cancer treatment options; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Through real-world cases, students are exposed to a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics.

Prerequisite: HAMSCI Introduction to Health and Medical Sciences DE or HAMSCI Biomedical Science II Honors

Course Description: The course is designed to provide an introduction to the professions of physical and occupational therapy. Students explore the principles and practices of therapists in the healthcare industry and participate in clinical observation under the direct supervision of a licensed physical and/or occupational therapist. Clinical skills in the areas of physical therapy and occupational therapy enable students to gain understanding of rehabilitative care, which is practiced throughout the continuum of care and across the life span of individuals. After successful completion of this course, students may seek higher education for specific degrees/licensure in a variety of fields such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, sports medicine, athletic training, chiropractic medicine, biology, or exercise science.

Course Description: In this course, students earn a certification in First Aid/CPR/AED. The course introduces students to topics such as human anatomy and physiology, nutrition, biomechanics, medical terminology, injuries and illnesses, and legal and ethical issues in sports medicine. Students also examine prospective careers in the sports medicine field. Upon successful completion of this course, students are eligible to take Sports Medicine II and pursue certification as a personal trainer.

Course Description: This course is one of two courses that prepare students to be Vision Care Assistants. Students participating in this entry-level course will acquire the knowledge and assisting-level skills to function in association with a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist. Course Description: Students will be introduced to healthcare systems, how to manage an office, and the electronic medical record as it pertains to the field of medical coding and billing. Course Description: In the final course of the PLTW Biomedical Science sequence, students build on the knowledge and skills gained from previous courses to design innovative solutions for the most pressing health challenges of the 21st century. Students address topics ranging from public health and biomedical engineering to clinical medicine and physiology. They have the opportunity to work on an independent project with a mentor or advisor from a university, medical facility, or research institution.

Course Description: This course is designed to provide a fundamental understanding of kinesiology and anatomy from a clinical perspective, to include the anatomical basis of common pathological conditions seen by physical/occupational therapists. Instruction is reinforced with hands-on activity labs and 3 practical experiences. Students continue to explore principles and practices of therapists learned in the HAMSCI Physical/Occupational Therapy I Honors class and participate in clinical observation under the direct supervision of a licensed physical and/or occupational therapist. Clinical skills in the areas of physical therapy and occupational therapy enable students to gain an understanding of rehabilitative care, which is practiced throughout the continuum of care and across the life span of individuals. HAMSCI Vision Care Technician II HonorsGrade: 12 Credit: 1.0

Prerequisite: HAMSCI Vision Care Technician I Honors

Course Description: This certificate program is designed to provide students with the basic skills and knowledge to begin work as an ophthalmic/optometric assistant. The coursework will fulfill the requirements of the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) and prepare students to take the national examination administered by JCAHPO. Trained, experienced ophthalmic assistants who can demonstrate the right skills and knowledge should be able to pursue many exciting and respected career options or postsecondary study within the ophthalmic industry. Students will complete 1,000 hours of clinical experience, under the supervision of a licensed practitioner within 36 months of expected examination.
