Healing  the  Gut

The  medical  approach  to  trea4ng  H.  pylori  (and  any  other  chronic  diges4ve  infec4on)  is  to  simply  remove  the  offending  organism  using  an4bio4cs,

and  in  some  people  this  works  very  well.

Their  symptoms  disappear  and  they  feel  great.

Healing  the  Gut

However,  in  other  people,  trea4ng  the  infec4on  makes  no  difference  to  symptoms,  and  may  even

cause  them  to  feel  worse.

Why  is  this?

•  There  are  several  reasons,  over  and  above  side-‐effects  caused  by  an4bio4cs.

•  Let’s  take  a  look  at  those  reasons.

Splinter  Analogy

•  If  you  have  a  splinter  in  your  finger,  pulling  out  the  splinter  doesn’t  mean  the  wound  heals  right  away.

•  Similarly,  removing  H.  pylori  doesn’t  necessarily  undo  the  damage  caused  by  the  bacteria.

•  It  can  take  4me  for  the  gut  lining  to  recover.

Other  Bad  Bugs

•  It’s  very,  very  common  to  find  other  bad  bugs  alongside  H.  pylori.

•  These  are  rarely  –  if  ever  –  considered  in  the  medical  seMng.

•  They  can  jointly  cause  –  or  even  be  the  SOLE  cause  of  symptoms  in  some  people.

Yeast  and  Fungal  Overgrowth

•  Candida,  Geotrichum,  Penicillum,  Saccharomyces,  etc.

•  They  coat  the  inside  of  the  mouth,  esophagus,  stomach,  intes4ne.

•  Cause  allergic  responses,  are  toxic,  disturb  diges4on  and  can  cause  any  and  every  symptom.

Oral  Yeast  /  Fungi

Tonsil  /  Esophageal  Fungi

Gut  Overgrowth

•  Imagine  that  white  coa4ng  in  your  stomach  and  on  the  lining  of  your  intes4ne.

•  You  won’t  digest  food  properly,  and  the  fungi  will  create  toxicity  in  your  body,  as  well  as  allergic  reac4ons  (in  some  people).

•  External  signs  of  yeast  and  fungal  overgrowth  are  shown  next:

Fungal  Infec4ons

Athlete’s  foot,  skin  boils,  dandruff  and  jock  itch

Parasites

•  There  are  many  different  parasites.

•  They  range  from  4ny,  microscopic  ones  (oWen  the  most  dangerous)  to  large  worms.

•  I’ve  seen  them  all  show  up  in  client  lab  tests.

Microscopic  Parasites

•  Can  cause  the  same,  or  similar  symptoms  as  H.  pylori.

•  Bloa4ng,  gas,  gurgles,  pain,  cons4pa4on,  diarrhea.

Microscopic  Parasites

•  Blastocys)s  hominis

•  Giardia  lamblia  •  Cryptosporidium  •  Entameba  histoly)ca

•  Dientameba  fragilis  •  Endolimax  nana

…and  more

•  They’re  only  recognized  by  doctors  if  you  have  severe  diarrhea,  vomi4ng  and  fever.

•  You  likely  won’t  get  tes4ng  for  them  unless  you  have  those  symptoms.

Giardia  –  an  example

Worms

•  Can  cause  the  same,  or  similar  symptoms  as  H.  pylori.

•  Bloa4ng,  gas,  gurgles,  pain,  cons4pa4on,  diarrhea.

Worms,  cont.

•  Pinworm  –  very  common  •  Hookworm  •  Threadworm  (not  the  same  as  pinworm  –  “oWen  mistaken  for  pep4c  ulcer  disease”)

•  Whipworm    •  Tapeworm  •  Roundworm  (Ascaris)

•  Flatworms/flukes  –  look  like  slugs  (seriously!)

Collateral  Damage

•  Parasites  can  cause  or  contribute  to:  – Diges4ve  issues  – Aches  and  pains  in  the  body  – Energy  problems  – Mood  problems

– Sleep  issues  – Skin  problems  – Hormonal  /  reproductuve  problems

Bacteria

•  H.  pylori  is  not  the  only  trouble-‐causing  bacterium.

•  Clostridium  difficile,  E.  coli,  Campylobacter,  Citrobacter,  Yersinia,  Klebsiella,  Vibrio  and  others  can  all  cause  significant  problems.

•  Diarrhea,  cons4pa4on,  bloa4ng,  skin  problems,  mood,  energy,  etc.  can  all  be  affected.

Why  Am  I  Teaching  You  This?

•  All  these  bad  bugs  are  like  splinters  in  your  finger.

•  The  gut  can’t  heal  ‘4l  you  get  rid  of  them,  just  like  the  finger  can’t  heal  ‘4l  the  splinter’s  gone.

•  The  only  way  to  know  you  have  them  is  to  run  the  appropriate  tests.

Reduced  Stomach  Acid

•  H.  pylori  is  known  to  REDUCE  stomach  acid  levels  in  many  people  by  damaging  the  cells  that  produce  hydrochloric  acid.

•  This  is  one  way  in  which  the  other  bad  bugs  can  get  into  your  intes4ne.

•  Acid  is  supposed  to  kill  the  bad  bugs,  but  they  can  pass  through  the  stomach  undamaged  when  acid  levels  are  low.

Atrophic  Gastri4s

•  This  is  a  condi4on  in  which  the  stomach  lining  is  severely  damaged  over  4me.

•  Can  only  be  Dx  by  a  doctor.

•  It  takes  a  long  4me  to  fix  this,  just  like  it  can  take  a  long  4me  for  the  small  intes4ne  of  a  celiac  pa4ent  to  heal  (several  years,  in  fact).

Diges4ve  Enzyme  Levels

•  Your  pancreas  and  liver  make  enzymes  and  bile,  respec4vely,  which  are  both  squirted  into  your  intes4ne  to  con4nue  the  diges4ve  process.

•  These  func4ons  don’t  operate  properly  when  stomach  acid  levels  are  low  (it’s  like  a  domino  effect).

•  In  the  end,  it  creates  a  nice,  hospitable  environment  for  parasites  and  fungi  to  live.

Get  to  the  Point!

•  The  point  I’m  making  is  that  trea4ng  H.  pylori  with  pharmaceu4cals  doesn’t  address  any  of  this.

•  Here’s  where  we  can  add  a  lot  of  value.

Nutri4on

•  The  Home  Recovery  Plan  nutri4on  recommenda4ons  help  remove  other  gut  irritants:

–  Gluten  –  Grains  –  Soy  –  PUFA  – Milk

–  Addi4ves  –  Alcohol  –  Excessive  sugar

Nutri4on,  cont.

•  Consuming  non-‐inflammatory  protein  in  egg,  fish,  seafood,  gela4n,  etc.  helps  to  heal  the  gut  lining.

•  Coconut  oil  and  animal  fats  can  help  protect  the  gut  lining.

•  Bone  broth  can  be  very  healing  to  for  the  gut.

•  Drinking  plenty  of  clean  water  provides  hydra4on  for  the  protec4ve  mucosal  barrier  to  be  maintained.

Specific  Gut  Healing  Nutrients

A  number  of  excellent  healing  nutrients  and  herbs  can  be  used  to  accelerate  and  support  the  recovery  and  health  of  your  diges4ve  system.

L-‐glutamine

•  L-‐Glutamine  is  an  amino  acid,  which  is  essen4al  for  the  health  of  the  immune  system  and  diges4ve  tract.

•  It  is  very  repara4ve  and  healing  in  the  gut  where  it  strengthens  the  mucosal  cells  and  in  turn  helps  leaky  gut  .

•  May  not  be  a  good  choice  if  you  have  yeast/fungal  overgrowth.  GET  TESTED.

Colostrum

“One  of  the  primary  func)ons,  if  not  THE  primary  func)on  of  colostrum  is  gut  health.  ”

 -‐  Pep4de  Immunotherapy  –  A  Physician’s  Guide

•  Colostrum  in  mother’s  milk,  along  with  other  compounds,  quickly  reduces  the  permeability  of  the  baby’s  GI  tract.

Colostrum,  cont.

“Research  has  shown  that  colostrum  is  the  single  most  effec)ve  agent  for  correc)ng  leaky  gut  syndrome…  Colostrum  also  promotes  re-‐

coloniza)on  of  the  bowel  by  the  friendly  flora.”

 -‐  Pep4de  Immunotherapy  –  A  Physician’s  Guide

Probio4cs

•  Reduce  inflamma4on  •  Support  immune  func4on  •  Produce  vitamins  •  Prevent  bad  bugs  taking  hold  •  May  affect  mood  •  Provide  food  for  the

…see  the  separate  lesson  (coming  up)  as  you  can’t  just  “shotgun”  probio4cs.

Zinc-‐L-‐Carnosine

•  Zinc-‐carnosine  (PepZin-‐GI)  has  exci4ng  new  literature  showing  the  impressive  an4-‐H.  pylori  and  mucosal  protec4ve  and  an4-‐ulcera4ve  proper4es  this  compound,  including  the  ability  to  protect  the  intes4nal  lining  against  damage.

Turmeric  /  Curcumin

•  Research  consistently  shows  an4-‐inflammatory  benefits  (at  least  300  references).

•  The  benefits  can  even  be  seen  in  advanced  disorders  such  as  coli4s.

Vitamin  D

•  Vitamin  D  affects  the  gut  lining!

•  Research  shows  vitamin  D,  when  improved,  helps  the  integrity  of  the  gut.

•  Vitamin  D  helps  reduce  inflamma4on

…and  many  other  benefits

•  Nearly  EVERYONE  I  test  is  deficient  in  vitamin  D.

Specific  Recommenda4ons

•  I  don’t  actually  like  giving  specific  recommenda4ons  without  knowing  more  about  you.

•  I  really  need  to  know  what’s  going  on  in  your  system  before  making  recommenda4ons,  otherwise  you  may  spend  money  on  something  that  either  doesn’t  work,  or  makes  you  feel  worse.

General  Product  Recommenda4ons

•  L-‐Glutamine

•  It’s  available  in  capsules  or  powder.

•  Begin  with  3-‐5grams  per  day.

•  Note:  gela4n  also  has  plenty  of  glutamine  and  other  healing  amino  acids.

General  Product  Recommenda4ons

•  Colostrum

•  Tegricel  Colostrum  by  Designs  For  Health  is  high  quality.

•  1-‐2  capsules  per  day,  or  more.

General  Product  Recommenda4ons

•  Probio-cs

•  Must  be  high  quality

•  I  recommend  Adult  Formula  CP-‐1  from  Custom  Probio4cs.

General  Product  Recommenda4ons

•  Zinc  L-‐Carnosine

•  It’s  in  Gastromend-‐HP  (which  contains  mas4c,  vitamin  U,  MSM,  vitamin  C)

•  Another  product  is  “Nature’s  Lining”  by  Lane  Labs.

General  Product  Recommenda4ons

•  Curcumin

•  C3  curcumin  by  Designs  For  Health  is  excellent.

•  Also  the  DaVinci  Labs  product.

Vitamin  D

•  First,  it’s  important  to  test  vitamin  D  levels  (contact  us  if  you’d  like  help  –  do  not  go  above  2000IU/day  unless  you’ve  tested)

–  30-‐75lbs  =  up  to  1000IU/day  –  76-‐125lb  =  up  to  2000IU/day  –  >125lb  =  up  to  5000IU/day

•  Check  levels  again  in  8  weeks  •  Check  serum  calcium  levels  (calcium  can  go  too  high  with  higher  vitamin  D  doses)

Emulsi-‐D3

•  A  liquid  vitamin  D  is  helpful  as  it  can  be  absorbed  through  skin  and/or  under  the  tongue.

•  It  won’t  be  absorbed  through  the  gut  properly  when  the  gut  is  compromised.

•  Apply  to  skin  on  inside  of  wrists  or  underside  of  feet.

Stool  Tes4ng

•  The  stool  tes4ng  we  use  to  help  with  our  work  is  not  just  about  finding  bad  bugs.

•  See  the  separate  lesson  on  the  benefits  (and  drawbacks)  of  stool  tes4ng  (coming  up).

Stool  Tes4ng

•  Predominant  bacteria  levels    – Which  specific  ones  do  you  need?

•  Opportunis-c  bacteria  –  Yersinia,  Vibrio,  Klebsiella,  Salmonella,  etc.

•  Pathogenic  bacteria  •  H.  pylori,  C.  diff,  E.  coli,

Campylobacter

•  Yeast  and  fungal  overgrowth  –  Candida,  Geotrichum,  etc.

•  Parasites  – Worms,  protozoans,  etc.

•  Drug  resistance  •  Adiposity  index  –  How  the  bacterial  popula4on  can  cause  weight  gain

Stool  Tes4ng

•  Beneficial  short  chain  faDy  acids  –  Protect  against  inflamma4on  and  cancer

•  Inflamma-on  – White  blood  cells,  lactoferrin  –  IBD  or  IBS?

•  Immune  strength  –  Front  line  immune  defence

•  pH  •  Diges-on  –  Vegetable  fibers,  proteins  and  fats

•  Absorp-on  –  fats

Summary

•  Trea4ng  H  pylori  (or  any  other  chronic  “bad  bug”,  for  that  maser)  doesn’t  mean  the  gut  is  going  to  heal.

•  Specific  strategies  placed  on  top  of  the  Home  Recovery  Plan  nutri4on  plan  can  accelerate  the  healing  process.

Summary

•  A  protocol  using  glutamine  (or  gela4n),  probio4cs,  colostrum,  vitamin  D,  curcumin  and  zinc-‐carnosine  can  accelerate  healing.

•  BUT,  I  s4ll  recommend  running  a  stool  test  first,  otherwise  you  may  s4ll  have  splinters  in  your  finger  that  can  compromise  even  the  finest  supplements.

Thank  You!

•  Thanks  for  tuning  in.

•  I  hope  you  found  this  session  helpful.

•  Look  out  for  the  bonus  sessions  coming  soon  on  several  other  important  areas  of  health,  including  stool  tes4ng,  stress,  hormones  and  detoxifica4on!
