Section II. DESCRIPTION AND DATA

1-4. Purpose and UseHeadset-Microphones H-161/U and H-161A/Uprovide facilities for transmission and reception ofvoice-frequency speech signals. They can be usedwith portable and vehicular radio sets in areaswhere background noise is medium to high. Theycan be worn under the M1 infantry helmet. Bothmodels are similar, except that the H-161A/Ueliminates more background noise.

1-5. Technical Characteristics

Frequency response . . . . . . . . . . .. 300 to 3,500cps.Headset impedance . . . . . . . . . . .. 500 ohms.Normal headset input level . . . . 56 dbm at 1,000 cps.

1-6. Table of ComponentsThe components of Headset-Microphones H-161/Uand H-161A/U are listed in the basic issue itemslist (appx III), and are illustrated in figures 1-1and 1-2.

1-6.1. Items Comprising an OperableEquipmentHeadset-Microphone H-161/U (FSN 5965-825-4871)and Headset-Microphone H-161A/U (FSN 5965-082-4037) each comprises an operable equipment.

1-7. Description o f Headse t -Microphones H-161/U and H-161A/U

(figs. 1-1 and 1-2)Both units consist of two earphone cup assemblies,a headband assembly, microphone and boomassembly, neck strap-suspended chest set assembly(switch), retractile cable assembly, and a head-setcard assembly. These assemblies are describedbelow.

a. Earcup Assembly. The earcup assembly con-sists of an earphone, earphone retainer, trans-former, earcup plate, and earcup cushion. Theearcup and earcup plate are made of lightweighthigh impact plastic.

b. Microphone and Boom Assembly. Themicrophone and boom assembly holds themicrophone close to the operator’s lips, and helpseliminate background noise. The boom microphonecase is made of lightweight high impact plastic.

c. Chest Switch Assembly. The chest switchassembly employs a three-position switch to selectthe circuit over which the user wishes to talk andlisten.1-8. Differences Between Models

(figs. 5-1 and 5-2)

Headset-Microphone H-161A/U is interchangeablewith the H-161/U, but the H-161/U cannot be sub-stituted for the H-161A/U. Connector, Plug, Elec-trical U-182/U on the H-161A/U interphone cordhas been rewired to include a ground wire to pin A(fig. 5-2). This change was made to help eliminatebackground noise. The H-161A/U uses a cheststrap, instead of the clothing clip used on the H-161/U (figs. 1-1 and 1-2), to hold the chest switchassembly close to the user’s chest.

3-3. Preventive MaintenancePreventive maintenance is the systematic care,

servicing, and inspection of equipment to preventthe occurrence of trouble, to reduce downtime, andto assure that the equipment is serviceable.

a. Systematic Care. The procedures given inparagraphs 3-4, 3-5, and 3-6 cover routine system-atic care and cleaning essential to proper upkeepand operation of the equipment.

b. Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services. The preventive maintenance checks and serviceschart (para 3-5) outlines functions to be per-formed at specific intervals. These checks andservices are to maintain Army electronic equip-ment in a combat serviceable condition; that is ingood general (physical) condition and in goodoperating condition. To assist operators in main-taining combat serviceability, the chart indicateswhat to check and the normal conditions; theReferences column lists the illustration, para-graph, or appendix that contains detailed repair orreplacement procedures. If the defect cannot beremedied by the operator, higher level mainte-nance or repair is required. Records and reportsof these checks and services must be made in ac-cordance with the requirements set forth in TM38-750.

3-4. Preventive Maintenance Checks andServices Periods

Paragraph 3-5 specifies checks and services thatmust be accomplished daily or under the specialconditions listed below:

a. Before the H–161/U or H–161A/U is putinto operation.

b. When the H-161/U or H-161A/U is initiallyinstalled.

MAINTENANCE ALLOCATION

Section I. INTRODUCTION

A3-1. Generala. This appendix assigns maintenance functions

to be performed on components, assemblies, andsubassemblies by the lowest appropriate mainte-nance category.

b. Columns in the maintenance allocation chartare as follows:

(1) Part or Component. This column showsonly the nomenclature or standard itemname. Additional descriptive data areincluded only where clarification is neces-sary to identify the component. Compo-nents, assemblies, and subassemblies arelisted in top-down order. That is, theassemblies which are part of a componentare listed immediately below that compo-nent, and subassemblies which are partof an assembly are listed immediately be-low that assembly. Each generationbreakdown (components, assemblies, orsubassemblies) are listed in disassemblyorder or alphabetical order.

This function includes but is notlimited to welding, grinding, riveting, straightening, and replacement of partsother than the trial and error replace-ment of running spare type items suchfuses, lamps, or electron tubes.Align. To adjust two or more com-ponents of an electrical system sothat their functions are properly syn-chronized.Calibrate. To determine, check, or rec-tify the graduation of an instrument, weapon, or weapons system, or com-ponents of a weapons system.Overhaul. To restore an item to com-pletely serviceable condition as pre-scribed by serviceability standards. This is accomplished through employ-ment of the technique of “inspect andrepair only as necessary” (IROAN).Maximum utilization of diagnostic andtest equipment is combined with mini-mum disassembly of the item duringthe overhaul process.Rebuild. To restore an item to a stand-ard as near as possible to original ornew condition in appearance, perform-ance, and life expectancy. This is ac-complished through the maintenancetechnique of complete disassembly ofthe item, inspection of all parts or com-ponents, repair or replacement of wornor unserviceable elements using originalmanufacturing tolerances and/or speci-fications and subsequent reassembly ofthe item.

index (sec VII) to be used to locate a repair partwhen either the Federal stock number or refer-ence number (manufacturer’s part number) isknown. The first column in the index is preparedin numerical or alphanumeric sequence in ascend-ing order. The reference numbers (manufactur-er’s part numbers) are listed immediately follow-

ing the last listed Federal stock number in theindex of Federal stock numbers.

b. When the Federal stock number or referencenumber is known, follow the procedures given in(1) and (2) below.

(1) Refer to the index of Federal stocknumbers (sec VII), and locate the Federal stocknumber or reference number. The FSN andreference number are cross-referenced to theapplicable figure and item number or referencedesignation.

(2) Refer to the repair parts list (sec III and V)and locate the figure number (col 7a — 20P,10a — 34P) and item number or reference desig-nation (col 7b — 20P, 10b — 34P) as noted in theFSN index.

c. When the figure and item number orreference designation are known, scrutinize col-umns 7a and 7b — 20P and 10a and 10b — 34P, ofthe repair parts list (sec III and V) until the item islocated.

d. When the FSN, reference number, figurenumber, and item number are not known, scrutinize column 3 of the repair parts list (sec IIIand V), which is arranged in alphabetical order.
