“The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.” Abraham Lincoln

We were most fortunate with the weather for Family and Old Boys and Girls Day. As a result we had a wonderful day and a big “Thank You” to all who supported the day. The Class of ’61 turned out for a day of reminiscing and reconnecting with their school friends, some of whom they had not seen in over 40 years.

The Old Boys were delighted that we still allow children to play in the mud, have conker and acorn fights and catch snakes. They were equally disappointed that cold showers, rat hunting and 3 meals a day of lumpy porridge had fallen by the way. Their overall impression of Clifton was that it remains as happy a school as when they were here, despite the cold showers and lumpy porridge!

Children Jessica Britton was awarded her Silver Certificate for continuous academic progress.

Michaela Strong and Demi Bade-Aluko were appointed Media Centre Monitors

Ashleigh Beddow successfully passed the Royal School of Music Grade 2 Piano exam.

Congratulations to all the above girls!

Staff Mrs Megan Fourie has been appointed as locum tenens while Mrs Combrinck is away on maternity leave. Mrs Fourie qualified with a Bachelor of Education through Edgewood and is a certified teacher with the Core Standards authority in the UK.

Mrs Fourie has taught Grades 1 and 2 at Bisley Park Primary and Prestbury Primary in Pietermaritzburg and Years 1 and 2 at Eveline Day School and Grove Park Primary in London. A certified SmartBoard teacher, Mrs Fourie is trained in teaching using learning styles and received the highest possible award that a teacher can be awarded by OFSTED (the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s services and Skills) in the UK.

We look forward to welcoming Megan to Clifton.

Both our Unit Manager and our Assistant Catering Manager received awards at the Capitol Caterers Awards dinner last week. Ms Long received a Merit Award for her management of Clifton’s auxiliary services and Mr Gumede received the Director’s Choice Award for the quality of his work at Clifton. Congratulations to both Ms Long and Mr Gumede, both awards are fully deserved.

Culture

Grade 5 and 6 Cultural Showcase – Thursday 23 June Grade 5 and 6 parents please remember to book your tickets for “Miranda and the Magic Sponge” through Mrs Coetzer in reception. Please also check the play practice times carefully for when your child is required to be at a late play practice session.

Grade 5 and 6 boarder parents may take their children home after the Cultural Showcase on Thursday evening. Please let Mrs Coetzer know before 12pm Wednesday 22 June in order for us to prepare your child’s report. Semester reports of those children leaving after the show will be available for collection from Mr Shaw.

Grade 2 Mrs Karssing reports that the response from the SPCA appeal has been fantastic. “Thank you to all who have supported this cause. I hope to fill two trailers with the food, which the first and second winners will take down to Howick soon. Please pop into my store room to have a look, if you wish!”

Thanks to all parents and friends of Clifton who have supported this appeal.

JP Reading Room Mrs Oldfield has undertaken the refurbishment of the newly-renovated JP reading room. Phase one includes an underwater cave and Narnia. To outfit the cave and Narnia, we are looking for any of the following:

Leftover paint – blues and white mainly but anything else too.

Fish theme material (perhaps old bathroom curtains)

Old coat – fur if possible

Inflatable dolphin or shark

Fisherman’s style net

Faux fur material

Snowflake material

If you are able to donate any of the above, please see Mrs Oldfield. All donations are very gratefully received.

Boarders End-of-Term travel arrangements Mr Majola would like to remind parents that all travel arrangement details should have been in to Mrs Coetzer by Friday last week. If you have not yet confirmed arrangements with Cheryl, please do so before Tuesday 21 June.

Sport Two children were regrettably omitted from the SANEF team announcements in last week’s e-news. They are Paige Collier (Level 3) and Matthew Green (Level 1) who have both been selected to represent KZN at the annual inter-schools in Johannesburg. Congratulations to Paige and Matthew!

Congratulations to the 1st XV on their win against Cordwalles on Saturday in the 50th Cup game.
