SERVICE LEARNING CLUB There is no doubt that anyone with an All Souls St Gabriels connection is aware of the importance the school places on servant leader-ship. Helping others

This exciting development will al-low students to live out our school motto Servire Regnare.

The school would like to thank Mr John Butcher and the Lions Club of Charters Towers (Host) who have agreed to be our host club and Mrs Toni Lanphier from The Cathedral School who has given generously of her time to assist us in the de-velopment phase.

Senior students explained how the club works to the students in House meetings last week and “sign ons” will follow shortly.

I am excited by formation of the club which will further strengthen the importance of servant leader-ship in the school community and in wider life.

STUDENTS

Scholarships Over the holidays, Jesse Whiting (Year 12) travelled to Melbourne to attend the “Murrup Barak” Indige-nous Leadership camp at Mel-bourne University. Jesse was the recipient of a scholarship which covered all her transport and ac-commodation costs. Congratula-tions to Jesse and thank you to Melbourne University for providing the opportunity for our young in-digenous leaders to come together from all over Australia.

Charters Towers Show The school had a strong represen-tation at the Show again this year. At the end of last term, students spent time at the showgrounds as-sisting the Show Society with the set- up which was certainly appre-ciated. Entries were strong again this year in art/craft & cooking, and our Junior School display was a vibrant expression of all that happens at the school. Cattle Club and the Equestrian team per-formed well and the Stage Band provided musical entertainment. Congratulations to the students in-volved and thank you to the staff that offered their support and as-sistance.

Queensland Music Festival “On Song” On Friday 21 July, we held a music concert in the Chapel, which fea-tured Kasey O' Donoghue (Year 10) who performed with singer/songwriter Jack Carty, as a part of the Qld Music Festival 'On Song' program. Kasey was one of the five finalists from regional Queensland. Her prize was to workshop with a professional musician, both on Skype and in person at the school. The workshops culminated in a concert where they performed Ka-sey’s original composition. The concert also included ASSG choirs and band. It was a very enjoyable evening which showcased our mu-sical talent.

We were thrilled to find out that Kasey was consequently flown to Brisbane by the Queensland Music Festival to perform with Jack at Green Jam at QPAC on 28 July.

STAFFING UPDATE Over the holidays, Mr Mike Ed-monds finished up at the school. We thank Mike for helping us out when we expanded from two to three streams of Year 9 at the start of the year.

Mr Jay Chetty returned for the start of the term but became unwell and has been on leave.

Mrs Claire Bowley is currently wait-ing for her visa to be approved be-fore she moves from England to commence teaching science.

EVENTS

Whole School Breakfast There are not many opportunities for the entire school to get togeth-er but on Friday 28 July was one of those occasions. Students from Pre Prep to Year 12 and all our staff, both teaching and non-teaching, came together this morning and had breakfast. What a sight to be-hold.

For some of our junior students, this is the first time they have been up to Halse Hall. By the big vegemite smiles, I think it is safe to say it was a success. Thanks to Deb and her team for cooking for us all.

Thanks to Year 3 for their poem about the breakfast.

SPORT Congratulations to both the Con-fraternity Football and QISSN Net-ball teams who competed in Bris-bane during the break. Once again, they were fine ambassadors for the school. Well done also to the boys who travelled out to Win-ton to play the curtain raiser against BTC prior to the Black-hawks vs Jets game. It was great to come away with a win that capped off a successful season. Good luck to the girls as they ap-proach finals.

Ski Trip to New Zealand In the last week of the holidays, Senior students travelled to New Zealand on an adventure trip which was based in the snow fields. This was an addition to our already busy schedule and I thank Mr Dietrich for organising the trip. From my understanding, there were some fine skiing and snow-boarding skills on display. There were also some students who en-joyed the snow so much they spent quite a bit of time in it rather than travelling on it.

Welcome back for another jam-packed semester of learning and living at All Souls St Gabriels School.

Members of our senior school community were very proud to witness the presentation of awards to students for their achievements in the classroom in Semester 1. Headmaster’s Award and Academic Achievement Award recipients are listed in this edition of our newsletter. As well as con-gratulating our award recipients on the presentation day, I also took the opportunity to challenge the entire senior school to strive to be an award recipient for Semes-ter 2. The Headmaster’s Award recognises student’s effort level within the classroom. This is something that we can all strive to achieve and, in turn, reap the re-wards of improved academic standards.

Congratulations to all award recipi-ents!

2018 Year 11 Subject Selections Subject Selection forms have been received. All Year 10 students will be individually interviewed by ei-ther Mrs Fleming or myself in the

PAGE 3 ISSUE NO 7/2017 4 AUGUST 2017

coming weeks regarding their sub-ject selections and career path-ways.

QCS Test Preparation Students sitting the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test this year are continuing with a preparation pro-gram targeting specific skills they have studied in various subjects in their 12-13 years of schooling. Bringing these skills explicitly to the front of their minds, allows students to enter the test room with confi-dence. The actual test is adminis-tered in Week 7 this term and we feel our Year 12 students are well prepared to demonstrate their best work.

Term 3 Reports Families will receive an academic progress report at the end of this term. It will be in the same format as the Term 1 Report. This progress report contains valuable information and helps to keep the lines of com-munication open between home and school.

Semester 2 Homework Setting Schedule With the many extra-curricular events and opportunities planned for this term, I encourage families to impress upon their children the importance of keeping up with their academic work. This includes prep (homework activities), assessment work (draft ing) and study

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT LIST – SEMESTER 2, 2017

Students in Years 7—10 who receive an Academic Achievement Certificate have received an A in the majority of their academic core subjects, and no achievement level of less than a C in non-core subjects (only one C allowed).

Students in Years 11 & 12 who receive an Academic Achievement Certificate have received an achievement of either an A or B in all of their academic core subjects, and no achievement level of less than a B.

(additional reading and re-reading of class work). A Homework Set-ting Schedule has been provided to students in Years 7 to 10 this week – email and paper copy. An electronic copy will also be sent to families. This document assists with the planning for work to be completed in prep time for day and residential students.

Term 3 Assessment Schedule Students have received both a pa-per and pdf copy of their year lev-el’s Term 3 Assessment Schedule this week. Time was set aside in a ‘Dean of Students’ (DOS) lesson for Tutor Teachers to assist stu-dents to enter assessment dates into their diaries. This will help students prepare their assessment and study loads. Forward planning for drafting and study is the key to reducing the academic stress of end of term. An electronic copy of these documents will also be sent to families.

With all of the administrative sup-port programs, structures and documents listed above, students, staff and families should be able to effectively plan for a smooth ac-ademic term.

I look forward to catching-up with many of our school community as we gather for events this term. Safe travels.

A flurry of activity for the beginning of Term In just 10 days since the begin-ning of Term 3, we have man-aged to fit in the Combined Schools Formal, the ICAS Mathe-matics Competition, Charters Tow-ers Netball Carnival, 1st Rugby League trip to Winton, Athletics Training, Charters Towers Show preparation, a Softball clinic, the beginning of Touch Football fix-tures and the final week of regu-lar netball fixtures, the Dalrymple Trade Training Centre Expo, wel-coming two of our three new GAP staff, presentation of Academic and Headmasters’ Awards, Horse and Cattle Club, a round of Inter-School Debating, Queensland Mu-sic Festival ‘On Song’ concert, the

Whole School Breakfast and of course some teaching and learn-ing. It is no wonder, when you look at the list of happenings above, that some of the students and staff feel like they have not had a holiday. It is therefore, ex-tremely timely that we will all en-joy a day off on Tuesday for the Charters Towers Show holiday.

Uniforms On Friday Mrs Akers wrote to Jun-ior School parents about the myri-ad of non-uniform items that have crept into the Junior School since the holidays. While we have not yet written to secondary parents regarding the same issue that is not because our uniforms always look immaculate; quite the contra-ry. In fact, on Friday at the whole school breakfast I observed a massive number of uniform in-fringements. This has led me to the conclusion that either students

don’t care about how they pre-sent, they are too lazy or disor-ganised to ensure they are wear-ing the correct uniform correctly

Parent Teacher interviews At the beginning of the term we trialled a second timeslot for par-ent-teacher interviews in the hope that it would allow more parents to participate to assist with further developing links be-tween parents and teaching staff. It was pleasing to see some par-ents take the opportunity to meet with their children’s teachers, however, unfortunately numbers of attendees were significantly lower than at the beginning of Term 2. This could be due to the end of semester report being much more detailed than the Term 1 report, or it could be to do with the timing. Unless parents inform us which is the case we are only guessing. If you would

like to provide feedback regarding the scheduling of parent-teacher interview timeslots please contact either myself, Jon Teichmann or Flo King via the School office.

Within the next week you should receive contact from each of your child’s teachers (either via email or phone call) to update you with what is happening in their classes this term. You can also check their assessment requirements for the term in the assessment schedules which will be placed on the website this week. Please do not hesitate to contact your chil-dren’s teachers should you have any queries regarding content or their progress in any subject.

Enjoy the term.

Dean of Students Shannon Lee

Welcome back! I hope all students, staff and par-ents were able to spend some time with family and friends over the break to rest and recharge. I had the opportunity to watch both the Rugby League and Netball Confraternity Teams in Brisbane during the first week of the holi-days. As always these two teams represented the school with pride and competitive spirit. Unfortu-nately the netball game I watched the girls went down to the school my mum teaches, no bragging rights for me at the dinner table, until next year. Congratulations to all involved.

Inter-House Academics It’s only week three and already we have had the second annual Inter-House Academics competi-tion, the brain child of 2016 Aca-demic Prefect Dylan McKenna. Meg Burge (Academic Prefect), supported by Julia Keough did an outstanding job as the students look to make this one of the tradi-tional Inter-House events. A cou-ple of new events this year, the program kicked off with a scaven-ger hunt across the entire second-ary campus, Br Nathan’s tutor group celebrating first place, it was a great way to ensure every student was involved! The follow-ing week was filled with hot seat questions on the Quad in the lead up to the finale, the Academic Re-lay. The two brightest from each year level up to represent their house, with questions from a vari-

PAGE 6 ISSUE NO 7/2017 4 AUGUST 2017

ety of catagories; Mathematics, English, Science, The Arts and His-tory. The supporters erupting with elation at the sight of a white flag, success and whimpering with des-pair at the sight of a red flag, in-correct. While some houses moved more quickly through the ques-tions the sight of the red flag was frequent, perhaps it will be the team who took their time who wins in the end. We will have to wait until the next Headmaster’s Assembly for the announcement of the victors. Congratulations to Meg, Julia and all the competitors, it was a great way to start the term.

Change of Student Protection Officers Student Protection Officers are members of our staff who have a specific responsibility for Child Pro-tection. Their role is to support staff, students and parents with matters relating to child protec-tion. This Term we have had a couple of changes, Br Nathan will no longer be taking on this re-sponsibility. We thank Nathan for his hard work in this area. He will continue to be an integral member of the Pastoral Care Team. Wendy Fleming and Josie Stainkey as Year Level Co-ordinators will instead take on this responsibility. Please see the school website for contact details of all our Student Protec-tion Officers.

Some leave during this term On a personal level this is an excit-ing term for Bec and I as we are expecting the birth of our first child. Therefore, at some point during the term I will be on leave for a period. During this time most

behaviour matters will be dealt with by Wendy Fleming (Year 10–12 Co-ordinator) and Josie Stain-key (Year 7–9 Co-ordinator). For major behaviour or well-being concerns please contact either of these two ladies. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank both Wendy and Josie for picking up the slack in my absence, and Darren, his flexibility in allowing me to spend time with Bec and our new baby when the time comes, we really appreciate the support of the school.

Hope to see you at a school event soon.

Confirmation Classes Reminder Confirmation classes will be com-mencing soon. Confirmation is an opportunity for candidates to af-firm their faith and their decision to look to Jesus as the model for spiritual, ethical and moral living. At Baptism parents and god par-ents are asked to raise children and support and nurture them in their faith, and the community of the church, until the child is old enough to make the decision for themselves. At Confirmation a young person stands with their sponsor and affirms that they wish to take on the promises made for them at baptism. The Bishop then lays hand on them and prays for them; anointing them with chrism oil. The laying on of hands and anointing with chrism dates back millennia as a sign of setting apart a person for the service of God. Chrism is used at Baptism, Confirmation, Ordina-tions, and the anointing of Kings and Queens. The purpose is to pray for the influence of the Holy Spirit on the person’s life; to stir up in them the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, wisdom, understand-ing, counsel, knowledge, forti-tude, devotion, and reverence for God. Students and parents are asked to discuss the student’s in-terest in being Confirmed. Typical-ly, students are in Years 9 – 12. However, students in Years 7 and 8 may be considered depending on their individual circumstances.

Year 8 Philosophy and Reason This semester our Year 8 students are undertaking a new subject; Philosophy and Reason. I am very excited to be teaching this sub-ject. Students are learning to “Think for themselves” and to “Think with others”. They are learning how to ask big questions. Students are using inquiry and reasoning skills to form and dis-

PAGE 7 ISSUE NO 7/2017 4 AUGUST 2017

cuss questions about life. Each week they are presented with a stimulus to think about. For exam-ple, last week they explored big questions arising thinking about a scene from the movie Goodbye Mr Chips that depicted a person being bullied and the responses from dif-ferent people on seeing or hearing about the event. From this they asked; “why it is so important to have a mother figure”; “what is the point of bullying someone”; “Is it the bully’s fault for starting bul-lying in the first place (i.e. are people born bullies or do they learn to become one)”; “does cor-poral punishment ever change a person’s ways”. Whilst the idea of sitting and thinking deeply with others and expressing their thoughts and feelings among friends has been daunting, to many of the students are taking on the challenge. They have also been looking at deep questions raised by a scene between Pooh and Piglet, asking questions such as; “what is friendship”; “can any-thing be forever”; “can anything be more than forever”. Students are practicing to Think, Commit, Justify and Reflect. That is, they are developing skills of listening, forming responses, justifying their reasons using examples or chal-lenging another’s reasoning using counter – examples. Students are also learning to detect and chal-lenge generalisations and assump-tions in reasoning. 8C have been the first students to take Philoso-phy and Reason. They have re-sponded well to it. Indeed, I would say I underestimated the deep lev-el of insight and thinking we have seen in the class. Each week stu-dents have to complete a reflec-tion journal and their entries show developing ability to reflect on their learning and the learning of others as well as their insights into ideas and concepts explored. I look forward to their continued contributions and to see the growth of their thinking and rea-soning.

QMF at Souls Recently, thanks to one of our tal-ented students, Kasey O'Dono-ghue, the chapel was host to a visit by the Queensland Music Fes-tival. It was a great opportunity for Kasey to work with QMF devel-op and showcase her extraordi-nary talent; performing some of her original compositions. It was also a great opportunity to see performances by our band stu-dents and our 3 – 4 and 5 – 6 choirs. The chapel provided a wonderful space for these talent-ed musicians to share their love and passion for music. It was an inspiring concert and I am looking forward to seeing how we can continue to strengthen the links between our talented musicians and our chapel services.

THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who completed the MindMatters surveys that were sent out to students, parents and staff at the end of Term 2. Your feedback helps us identify which areas we need to focus on to improve the mental health and wellbeing of young people at ASSG.

MindMatters is a framework designed around key principles. It is flexible and adaptable, allowing schools to build capacity to meet their unique needs. It’s like a support scaffold that schools can use to create their own mental health strategy – choosing the parts that they wish to implement and keeping the best of what they already have in place. The information gathered in the surveys helps us to identify the areas where we can improve the mental health and wellbeing of our school community. Surveys will be conducted twice yearly so we can identify new ar-eas for improvement and track our progress towards areas already identified.

The four key components of MindMatters are: * Positive school community * Student skills for resilience* Parents and families * Support for students experiencing mental health difficulties

The Pastoral Care Team will be making regular contributions to the Phoenix Rising to keep you up-to-date on how we are working towards developing these areas of our school community. We will also be including other tips and information about supporting the development of mental health and wellbeing in young people.

If you have any questions or concerns about mental health or wellbeing issues please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the Pastoral Care Team.

On Wednesday the 2nd of August, the year 9 students had the privilege of meeting Michael Vuthy Sarunn and hearing his power-ful story which links closely to the novel we are studying, Little Brother by Allan Baillie. Michael is a Cambodian man who fled his country during the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s, attempting to escape the horrors of violence and conflict. He lost many of his family members and spent most his childhood working in rice farms under the supervision of Khmer Rouge soldiers, or in a refugee camp around the border between Cambodia and Thailand. At the age of 13, he and his remaining family immigrated to Australia and began a new life, and he now has multiple university degrees. Michael's story has helped our year 9 students, who are currently exploring the topic of refugees and the Khmer Rouge regime, understand the context of the novel and this time period. The students were very pleased to have the opportunity to meet such a cheerful man with such an inspiring story.

Australian Geography Competition In May, 12 of our HASS students volunteered to enter the Australian Geography Competition. This was a test of their analysis of maps, graphs and statistics. We have some excellent results to announce.

Credits have been awarded to Georgie Jonsson (Year 7), Kevin Mutton (Year 8) and Sean Smith (Year 10). Of spe-cial note, Grace Newnham (Year 8) achieved an outstanding result, scoring in the top 1% of entrants. This is a re-markable achievement, considering that over 70,000 students from 743 schools across Australia sat the test.

Historians hear from the experts Earlier in the term, the Senior Modern History class participated in the QHTA (Queensland History Teachers Association) student seminar in Townsville. Two experts in their fields gave our stu-dents the results of their latest studies. Associate Professor An-drew Bonnell of the University of Queensland presented infor-mation on life in Nazi Germany, and Dr Brian Hoepper, who advis-es on the Australian Curriculum, spoke on the history of terror-ism. The students appreciated hearing from such eminent histori-ans.

Our thanks go to Calvary Christian College for hosting this event.

LEO’s Club Lance Shephard Service Prefect

As a school, we already do quite a lot of service related activities, for example just recently we helped set up for the Charters Towers Show, the school sends people to clean ups after the races and Campdrafts etc.

However, there is nothing to monitor these or give them a formal structure. So, this is why the school is creating a LEOs Club (LEO = Leadership, Experience, Opportunity) to fulfil our school’s motto (Servire Regnare = to serve is to reign). So basically, this club will be an excellent opportunity to give back to the school and wider community through a wide range of activities that will be both fun and helpful to the individual and the community. For ex-ample, it could be something as simple as running a food stall at an event to raise money for a certain charity. Or it could be something as big as having your very own club day event with raffles and activities to organise. This club will be open to all secondary students and will form the framework around how we approach our service learning whilst providing opportunities for leadership development.

The LEOs Club will work alongside the existing ZONTA Club and will provide anyone in secondary school an op-portunity to develop leadership skills; as there is leadership roles (President, Project Organisers, Treasurers, etc.) in the club that need to be fulfilled, these will be elected by people within the club and will change on a biannual basis. If this sounds like something that you would like to participate in, then keep an ear out for more infor-mation and meeting times.

If you have any questions come and see myself (Lance Shephard) or email me at: [email protected] and I will do my best to answer any questions that you may have.

Whole School Breakfast PoemBy The Year 3 Rock Stars

Stomp! Stomp! Go the stampede of feet.

Chitter! Chatter! Go the ASSG students.

Slurp! Slurp! Goes the fresh sweet OJ.

Chomp! Chomp! Go the munching mouths.

Clang! Clang! Goes the stacking of plates.

BURP! Go the full tummies.

Guess what? It’s Whole School Breakfast time!

Instrumental Music Leslie Croker Instrumental Music Co-ordinator

Term three is off to a busy start for our Instrumental Music students, and will continue to be busy until the end!

Foyer Recital During the last week of holidays, ASSG was asked to provide an instrumen-tal ensemble to perform at a foyer recital held at the World Theatre. Harry Kempster, Kurtis West, Kuage Koglkia, and CTSHS student Jordan Dietrich made up the ensemble and were well received by a full audience!

QMF On-Song Concert Rehearsals for bands and choirs started in week one, to ensure we were prepared for the Queensland Music Festival concert held in the chapel on the first Friday of term. Stage Band, Year 5/6 Choir, and Year 3/4 Choir all did a fantastic job in their performances, and were followed by exceptional performances from Kasey O’Donoghue and Jack Carty.

CT Show Next up for Stage Band was the Charters Towers Show, in week three. ASSG was invited to be part of the entertainment provided throughout the afternoon. The band played a half hour set in the main arena of the show-ground, and received lots of great feedback from the crowd. Thanks must go to Mr Ron Sellars for providing his sound equipment and tech expertise for the evening!

Eisteddfod and AMEB Coming up very soon are the CT Eisteddfod and AMEB exams. Hopefully students are doing lots of practice at home so they are well prepared – if not, please encourage them to start practising. One of the best things to combat performance nerves is knowing one’s music well.

P & F News Annette Hall P & F Secretary

At the recent All Souls Saint Gabriels School P & F meeting held on 20 July, a new president was elected in the form of the enthusiastic and ever-smiling, Sarlina Teti. Sarlina was thankful for the nomination and looks forward to serving the All Souls school community along with the other dedicated members of our association. P & F gratefully welcomes Sarlina to her role and appreciates the efforts of Vice-President, Kylee West, who has been the interim Chair and ship-steerer during this changeover period. Special thanks, also, to ones such as Joanne Shadforth who was able to offer more than three hours of her time in helping Sarlina become acquainted with the contents of the P & F shed.

If you are looking for ways to contribute to P & F operations, we are currently calling for volunteers to help with two upcoming events - working behind the bar for the Local Government Conference Dinner due to be held in Halse Hall on Thursday 10 August and helping with catering for the Inter-School Athletics to be hosted by All Souls on Thursday 17 & Friday 18 August. If you are able to volunteer your time or resources to assist with either of these functions, please contact our new President, Sarlina Teti, on 0417 718 974 or email Tracy Maff via [email protected]. Any time or assistance you can offer would be both helpful and appreciated.

Our P & F continues to call for expressions of interest from businesses interested in sponsoring our proposed 2018 Calendar. If you would like to purchase a $125 advertising strip to be placed at the bottom of each month of the calendar, please forward your expression of interest either by email to: [email protected] or via mail to: PO Box 235, Charters Towers Q 4820. A tax receipt will be issued to contributors for tax purposes and priority for advertising placements will be given to businesses with a current or past link to All Souls Saint Gabriels School (current or past student or family), however businesses do not need to be operating solely within the Charters Towers region.

The next meeting of the ASSG P & F Association is due to take place on Tuesday, 15 August, at 5:30 pm in the All Souls Library. Please note that All Souls parents, past students and staff are all automatic members of the ASSG P & F Association and so there is no formal registration or membership fee required to join. If you are a parent or friend of All Souls Saint Gabriels School, we invite you whole-heartedly to attend our meetings and welcome you to jump in and assist us with functions whenever you are able.

Sport News Sport News Natasha Johnson Secondary Sports Co-ordinator

Welcome back to Term 3. It is already shaping up to be a very hectic term and the Boy’s Tennis and Girl’s Softball season is still 5 weeks away. I am sure you have read elsewhere in the Phoenix about the success of both our Confraternity Netball and Rugby League teams so I won’t waste paper providing a second recount. I would like, however, to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of the students and coaching staff who travelled away to the Confraternity carnivals as ultimately they get 5 days of glory for a year (or in many cases, 2 or 3) of train-ing, hard work and preparation, the vast majority of which happens outside School hours. So, to all students in the Confraternity Netball and Rugby League teams and the staff who have been responsible for their success, Congratulations on a job very well done!

The annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival was held in the last week of Term 2, taking advantage of some glorious weather. Under near perfect conditions the carnival quickly proved it would be an amazing day. Congratulations to all the students who attended competed and broke personal best records on the day. A lot of time and effort goes into the smooth running of an Athletics Carnival. Thank you very much to all our staff who ran their events effi-ciently and effectively, allowing students the opportunity to compete and also to spectators who were involved in making the carnival one of wonderful sportsmanship and athletic excellence.

The Spirit of the Carnival Award is an inaugural award that was introduced at last year’s carnival. This honour was and will be honoured to an athlete who may not necessarily be the strongest, fittest or fastest on the day. But rather they display a level of commitment towards their house and encompass the essence of partici-pation and having a go and giving it your all. The 2017 Spirit of the Carnival award was presented to Meg Burge for her tremendous efforts over the two days and the way in which she always competed with a smile.

The results are below.

Welcome back to Term 3 Welcome back everyone. On behalf of the JS staff, I would like to say what a pleasure it is to be back at school and see the enthusiasm and happy faces of our students after their holiday break. It looks like we have all settled well and the enthu-siastic, positive buzz of learning around the school, makes for a great start to the term.

Welcome our New Staff This term we welcome Mrs Debbie Weston (JS Admin), Mrs McGuire (JS Music) and Ms Francis (JS Li-brary & Learning Support) to the JS team. I know you will all make them feel very welcome.

We also welcome 3 new Gap Staff to the School. We are looking for-ward to Thilo, Lukas (German) and Mateo (Ecuadorian) support-ing the teaching and learning in classrooms, helping out on the sports field and joining us in many extra-curricular activities we offer across the School. We hope to make their stay in Charters Towers an enjoyable and memorable one.

Doing our personal best Giving our best is central to every-thing we do at All Souls St Gabri-els. This couldn’t ring more true than when we see the effort and enthusiasm the students applied during the Inter-House Athletics Carnival last term and the pride and enjoyment that has gone into preparing individual and class work for the School displays at the Char-ters Towers Show.

Inter-House Athletics Carnival At ASSG we value ‘striving for suc-cess’ and the Athletics Carnival is one of the many events in our School calendar where we recog-nise our students for their outstand-ing athletic endeavour and great sportsmanship. It was great to see the team spirit shown by students from all Houses during the JS Inter-House Athletics Carnival last term.

Confraternity Rugby League

Kade Banset 1st XII Captain

The 2017 ASSG First XIII Rugby League team travelled to Brisbane for the Confraternity Carnival. The preparations began with a couple of sharp training sessions with Gully making sure we were in the right mind set. A highlight of one of these sessions was Jake Diery beating Ky Banset in a hotly contested 100m race. After spending the night in the dormitory, the boys packed the bus and headed to Townsville to hop on the plane to Brisbane. As we got to the airport we played a prank on Sam Coffison saying that we didn’t have his ticket; he was shattered until we got to Brisbane when he realised it was a joke. The next day we had a sleep in followed by a delicious breakfast prepared by Dale and the crew from the Albion Manor, then we travelled out to the ovals and had a light training session, followed by a lunch at the shopping centres.

Day 1 saw the games begin. We were all keen to play. The first school we versed was Shalom Bundaberg. With a promising start this game became the year that we could break the curse and finally beat them. Kade Banset scored the first try followed by his second rower Noel Bridges hitting a perfect B line and scoring a 40m try untouched. The end score being 10-6 to All Souls. Kade was Man of the Match.

Later on Monday we were up against Clairvax Mackillop College, Upper Mt Gravatt, who weren’t new faces with us playing them last year and defeating them. Unfortunately the same could not be said for this year with the end score being 26-4 to Clairvax. Kade Banset was again Man of the Match.

Tuesday morning saw us having it out with St Michaels College Merrimac. It was an extremely tough game that started off well for us but unfortunately we were unable to come away with a win. This was mainly due to the loss of our beloved fullback Duncan Elliot to a collision with hard headed winger Joe bode, who reportedly claimed that he was shoved by incoming opposition. However, a late night team investigation of the match video revealed that no such shoving occurred and that it was all actually part of Joe’s elaborate plan to try and steal Duncan’s famed fullback position. Due to this incident Duncan was unable to play in any of the remaining games and it’s pretty safe to say that we as a team missed having him on the field as much as he hated being off the field. The end score for the game was 28-4 in favour of St Michaels with the only All Souls try and Man of the Match going to Kade Banset.

Tuesday afternoon we went up against St John’s School, Roma. It was an absolutely wonderful game with everyone working hard as a team. The All Souls men stepped it up a notch with some outstanding defence against St John’s who were unable to break our line despite us defending within the 5 metre line for 6 sets in a row. A big shout out must go to Casey Rankine and Darcy Meehan for getting us out of our own half and making some exceptional 50m line breaks in the process. We went to half time with not too much to say about the nil-all scoreboard but that was soon to be changed when Sam Coffison decided to make a blinding 20m line break from the kick off to offload to the ever-ready Kade Banset to score beneath the sticks in the the first set of the second half. A later try by a fiery ginger known as Clay Piece saw us end the game 12-nil in favour of All Souls with Man of the Match yet again going to the man himself Kade Banset. A further special mention must once again go to Joe Bode who decided mid-game to have a run it straight challenge with the opposition’s front rower which earned him a sledging from the boys after he got laid out on his back.

Day 3 was our rest day which meant we got a sleep in. We also went down and supported our netball girls playing Columba in a game that was a really good effort and resulted in them tying. After that we went to Chermside Shopping Sentre where we thought we had lost Sesoni within the first ten minutes. After much looking around we eventually found him then we split up some going to watch the new Transformers movie and some to watch Cars 3. Day 4 was a very tough game against our rival school Columba. We played with real Souls spirt and came away winning 22-6 with Darcy Meehan getting Man of the Match. Later that night we had our awards night with Gully handing out our player of the day over the 3 days we played. For Monday it was awarded to Kade Banset. Tuesday’s award went to Tim Ievers and on Thursday it was given to both Darby Godfrey and Darcy Meehan.

Day 5 was the Confraternity Bowl Grand Final against a combined school St Joseph’s Stanthorpe and Assumption College team. The first half was tough and we found ourselves going into half time down 18-4. After getting a talk from Gully we stepped up a level, getting the lead with 10 minutes to go, the score being 22-18. With just 2 minutes left they scored a really good try and kicked the conversion, unfortunately for us giving St Joseph’s/Assumption the match and winning the Confraternity Bowl. Noel Bridges received the Man of the Match award.

Special congratulations must be awarded to Sam Coffison for ‘the spirt of the carnival’ and Kade Banset for receiving the team’s Best and Fairest Award. The team would like to thank Gully, Bear and Jake for looking after us for a week. We would also like to thank all the families and friends that came to Brisbane to support us and to the netball girls for coming to watch us. We would also like to say a big thank you to Mrs and Mr Fleming for supporting both the boys and girls throughout the week.

Good luck to next year’s Confro team playing here in Charters Towers; we wish you well.

QISSN Netball 2017 Sarah Santo & Danielle Milton 1st Netball Captains

On Saturday 24 June the 1st Netball girls headed off to Brisbane for a week of playing netball. It started off with a bus ride that was filled with voices that Mrs Fleming would be proud of. After we arrived and got settled in we had a relaxing night, preparing for training next day. After training the next day we then headed off to the Toombul Shopping Centre for a couple of hours of retail therapy before attending the opening ceremony.

On the first day of competition we found that we weren’t mentally ready for the first couple of games. We were nervous, especially for our first game. Playing against ‘Our Lady Of The Southern Cross’, Dalby, we went down with a loss 10-15. Game two we were up against local competition BTC, having a hard fought draw 14-all. On our third game we had a loss to St Thomas Moore College, 17-24. Just as we were all tired and exhausted we still had one more game for the day. Thankfully, we ended up having our first win against St Mary’s College Maryborough, 13-4.

Tuesday started off with a neck and neck game against ‘St James Lutheran College’, losing by one shot on the buzzer making it 16-17. We then versed ‘Holy Spirit College’ going down with a loss 10-16. Game 7, we took on Mr Lee’s Mum’s school, ‘St Augustines College’, unfortunately going down 12-20 (sorry for not letting you have bragging rights at the table that night Mr Lee). Later that night we went and watched the new ‘Wonder Woman’ movie, which we highly recommend you watch. Most of the girls had tears coming down their face by the end of the film and deep down inside Breanne Peace is still crying.

On Wednesday, we came up against our other local competition, Columba Catholic College. With our firsts boys to cheer us on we had a draw 15-15. We would also like to let the boys and Gully know that we really appreciate you all coming and supporting us on your rest day. We love the atmosphere you guys bring to our court!

After that, our last game of the day was against St Mary’s Catholic College having a somewhat comfortable win 15-10. Later that day, we had enough time to, yet again, go shopping. As we were strolling around the shopping centre we received a call from Mrs Johnson saying that she had LOST THE CAR KEYS! She was panicking but felt somewhat relieved when she discovered the saviours who ‘found the keys’ actually had them the whole time.

On Thursday morning we played the qualifying final, versing St Mary’s Catholic College Cairns. It was a very ‘body on body’ game, with us winning, 13-12. That then took us up the ladder to verse St Marys College, Kingaroyin the semi-final. By the end of the game we were tied out at full time, which meant we had to go into overtime time; two five minute halves.

Before the extra time began we huddled up with no managers or coaches and had our own team talk. The determination of the girls paid off winning 25-20. That then took us into the grand final of our division versing friendly competition, BTC. Although the girls did their best we went down 7-11 in the final. This placed us Runners-Up in Div. 6.

We would like to thank everyone, especially our coaches, managers and family, who put in their time and effort into helping us throughout the week and the months leading up to QISSN.

We wish the girls playing in Townsville in 2018 the best of luck.

Head of Boarding Darren Guldbransen

Welcome back for term 3 We have had a great start to the term and as I am writing this col-umn our kids are getting ready to go to the annual Charters Towers Show. It is certainly one of the highlights of the year for all our kids and they all love the thrill side show alley brings, even if it does make them sick in the process. It is also a very exciting time for our cattle club students and staff who get to participate in the ring events. I wish them all the very best and hope all their hard work and dedication pays off and they come home with lots of ribbons and awards.

Footy trip On the first weekend of this term our First Rugby League team trav-elled to Winton to play an exhibi-tion game against BTC as part of the Intrust Super Cup Country round. Our boys played probably their best footy of the season and the game itself was a great result for our guys winning 44-16. We have a number of local Winton

boys in our team, so for us to be part of this event was great and it was very special for those guys the play in front of their family and home crowd. We would like to thank the Winton Senior and Junior Rugby League Clubs and the town as a whole, the hospitality we re-ceived over the two days we were there was amazing. Hopefully we can be involved again in the future.

Netball On the same weekend as the footy trip to Winton, our girls were com-peting at the Charters Towers net-ball carnival. We had 7 teams en-tered in the carnival and some teams played as many as eleven games over the two days which is unbelievably tough. We often talk about how much our boy’s love their footy but it never ceases to amaze me how passionate our girls are about their netball and how hard they play. Well done la-dies.

Formal Our year 11 and 12 students went from showing their tough, compet-itive sporty side one weekend to showing their soft well-groomed side the next when they all got dressed in their finest for the an-nual combined inter-school formal. They all looked terrific with the boys in their suits and the girls in their gowns with their hair and makeup done. When you see them all dressed up like that it makes you realise just how fast they grow up.

That’s it for now

Term 3 is now in full swing and as I write this we are hastily prepar-ing for the annual Charters Tow-ers Show. Our students have had a number of things to do since their return this semester and Ramsay has been right amongst it.

Cattle Club Ramsay has a large number of students involved with Cattle Club and so we notice the amount of work they do at this time of year. As I am writing this Harrison Fin-ger, Tom Morris, Robert Lawrence, Brandon Finger, Camden Finger, Casey Hopf and Aiden Powell are all at the show competing in the cattle judging and leading compe-titions. We have seen the work and know full well that they will do themselves proud as they do every year. Hopefully in my next article I will be writing about a great success.

Winton Rugby League Last weekend I was lucky enough to take the 1st Rugby League team on a trip out to Winton to play a one off game of footy against BTC as a curtain raiser to the Townsville Blackhawks and Ipswich Jets Intrust Super Cup match. The weekend was a great success, with our Winton students in particular enjoying the oppor-tunity to play on their home field in front of friends and family. The behaviour of the students who participated was exceptional and they all deserve a massive thank you for the way the represented the school. The weekend was capped off by a convincing victory in our final game of the year. Ramsay boarders Cody Sibson, Dan Rabuka and Sesoni Koroi were all involved so we thank and congratulate them.

Air Conditioning All the new Air conditioning has now been installed in the Dormito-ry and we are ready for use when the weather inevitably heats up. The boys are very excited and are understandably eager to fire them up, but as it is still quite cool here in the Towers we are waiting for more appropriate conditions. However, we are very happy with the upgrades and thank everyone involved with the installation.

That’s all for now, as always if any parents have queries in regards to their sons, please feel free to con-tact me via phone or email.

I hope everyone had a great holi-day and enjoyed having the boy’s home for a well deserved few weeks.

Over the holidays I was lucky enough to go down to Brisbane with the Confro boys. It was a very enjoyable week and the boys played very well and nearly won the bowl. It was good to see blokes like Tim Ievers, Darcy Meehan and Toby Rankine really stand up and work hard for their team mates. As they are Year 11

they will get to go back next year and have another shot at it.

Our Year 12 boys really stood up and led the way, out on the field and I can’t give them big enough wraps. I would also like to thank Ky Banset for trying his best in a 100m sprint he had with me, you can’t win them all Ky. To all the Confro boys thank you and well done. To the parents that came along a big thank you to you guys for your support and help on the trip. To Bear and Adrian Guldbran-sen a massive thank you to you guys without you two the boys don’t get to have the fun that they had on this trip.

We also had a trip out to Winton to play a curtain raiser for the black hawks. I’m happy to say we had a great win over BTC. I know the boys really enjoyed them-selves; the only thing they didn’t like was the water. Thank you to the Winton leagues club for all you done for us while we were out there.

We are starting our 2nd week which means we are starting to get back into full swing with Ath-letics, Bulls and Miners training happening just about every day at the moment. The boys will also have a lot of school work coming up.

We have the show this week and I know the boys will be keen to go out and spend some money on rides and other junk. But with the show also means flu time. So boys remember wash your hands. Last-ly guys I would like to remind eve-ryone about leave, I need emails sent to me to let me know when they’re going and who they are going with and what time they will be back.

My email is : [email protected] and my phone number is: 0419 471 433

We are already into the third week of term 3 and many of our seniors are seeing the end in sight. The rest of their schooling lives will be over before they know it and they are busy applying for apprentice-ships and jobs for next year. These are exciting times for them.

We have a new boarder in Page Year 11 from Winton. Kent Tanks has joined us and we welcome him into our boarding community. We wish him a smooth transition into boarding life and hope he has an enjoyable time here.

Our 1sts Rugby League team trav-elled to Winton on the first week-end of term to play a curtain raiser against BTC, for the Blackhawk vs Ipswich Jets game. Our Rugby Un-ion boys had to play a game on Friday night and then jump on the bus Saturday morning after a cooked breakfast laid on by Bear and Jake. They made the journey and then laid on some of the best footy they have played this year, defeating BTC 44 points to 18. They boys who participated came back raving about what a great time they had and how much they enjoyed the experience. Their con-duct, as always, is a great adver-tisement for our school.

The boys in the Inter-School ath-letics team are busily into training for their events and it is great to see so many from Page Dorm in-volved. The carnival is only 3 weeks away and it will be upon us before we know it. It is a great day and well worth coming to watch if you are able to get here.

The dormitory is running well and the behaviour of our boys has been great. We have introduced a rule that any swearing that I hear is punished by having to do 10 push-ups. It is a bit of fun but it is having the intended effect of re-

ducing the amount of bad lan-guage around the dorm. Its not only the boys who have been caught out.

As always please contact me if your son has raised any concerns with you about boarding life. They will often tell their parents about things they won’t tell me so any feedback is appreciated.

Welcome back to term 3, although by the time this is published we will be into week three. What a very busy first two weeks we have had. Training for the Inter– School Athletics has started in the after-noon for some, Mixed Touch every Thursday night, and Netball on a Wednesday night.

The first weekend was the Charters Towers Netball Carnival with some of the Becket girls up early Satur-day and Sunday morning.

We also have Eisteddfod this term and a few of our girls have parts in drama, good luck girls.

It’s show time. Our Horse and Cat-tle Club have been busy preparing for the Charters Towers Show. Good luck to all the children who will be competing on the Monday and Tuesday.

The boarders are off to the Show Monday night with the Tuesday be-ing a public holiday a sleep in will be much needed.

Last Friday morning was the big breakfast which all the girls en-joyed, a fine time was had by all.

Friday night was the combined schools formal for Year 11 and 12 students. Makeup, nails, tans, hair and beautiful dresses, the girls just looked beautiful, some very tired girls back in dorm on the Saturday.

Reflecting on the busy holidays is now a distant memory. Over the holidays, the dorm was a hive of activity with the installation of air conditioners in every room and visits from two separate school groups who made use of our dorm in the girls’ absence. Leaving this chaos behind, I was excited to welcome back the normality of the school term and the return of my wonderful Alban boarders.

With the term back in full swing, we have been busy with Birthdays, preparations for formal celebra-tions and the Charters Towers Show. This term we welcome a new Alban Boarder and Family to ASSG. Alana has taken to boarding life very quickly and our girls have welcomed her with open arms.
