Leo club activities include regular meetings, service projects & social functions. The Leo motto – Leadership, Experi-ence, Opportunity – is fulfilled as members work together in response to the needs of others.” Lions Interna-tional website.

We were delighted when we received strong support from the Lions Club. Consequently, we have spent the year working closely with them putting things in place for this to happen. I would also like to acknowledge the assistance we have received from Mrs Toni Lanphier from The Cathedral School who even travelled from Townsville to meet with the club and myself.

the staff for their dedication in what has been a busy and chal-lenging term. FACILITIES UPGRADES We have achieved a great deal around the grounds this year with air-conditioning the dorms, new bathrooms in Feetham and class-room upgrades. There are a num-ber of projects planned for 2018 including the final bathroom up-grades in Chad and some work in the resource centre. In order to plan for the future and to co-ordinate future infrastructure developments, the school has ap-pointed Tippett Schrock Architects from Townsville to begin a new master planning process. We look forward to working with them in 2018. Year 6, 2018 Throughout this year, Year 5 has been at capacity. We have had ad-ditional interest from families who wish to enrol their child in Year 6 next year, so we have decided to offer an additional class of Year 6 in 2018. This is an exciting devel-opment for the Junior School who not long ago had some multi-age classes. We are fortunate to have two experienced Year 6 teachers to take the classes. Mr Peter Turner will join Mrs Marilyn Toohey as the teachers for 2018. YEAR 12 Year 12 students finished on Fri-day 17 November with the Mass of God Speed and the Valedictory Dinner. Once again, we held the dinner in the Jim Rebgetz Centre, which was transformed from the location of Preliminary Prize Giving into a beautiful function room. Many thanks to Miss Jess Marley and her team of staff and student helpers. Thanks also to Peppers for providing the catering. After the excitement of finishing, students now face the reality of job hunting, getting ready for ap-prenticeships to commence in the

Academic Dean Ian Dietrich The sounds of summer … As this edition of our newsletter is published the sounds of summer are being heard – test cricket, Christmas carols and people talk-ing about holidays. To quote a well-known musical “these are a few of my favourite things”. These are; however, accompanied by the sounds of busy teachers finalising marking and reporting, staff com-pleting end of year paperwork tasks and my sore head ticking away at a timetable for the next calendar year! Staffing for 2018 in the Senior (and Junior) School Teaching ranks is well underway. As more and more of the staffing jig-saw puzzle is known, I am able to at-tempt to do the best I can for our students and staff in the timetable allocations for 2018. Middle and Senior Management staff who have been involved with the re-cruitment process over the past month are excited about the addi-tions to our teaching team. Finalised teacher allocations in the senior school will not be known until the start of the school year in January, as there are often unfore-seen changes to staffing that pop-up over the Christmas break. It was great catching-up with many families during November who travelled to the school for the end of year events and celebra-tions. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your child’s education journey. I wish everyone a blessed, family-filled and relaxing break. Remember the reason for the sea-son.

Dean of School Karen Storey Since I last wrote we have recog-nised many of our high achievers in the academic, cultural and sporting pursuits of our school, farewelled our 2017 senior class and announced our leaders for 2018, completed assessments and sat exams which are being busily marked and factored into report-ing. Congratulations to the worthy prize winners from our Awards Day who are listed elsewhere in the newsletter. For students, par-ents and staff this has been an extremely busy last few weeks. As this is the final newsletter for the year I would like to commend those students who have ‘stuck it out til the end’ and also thank staff for their commitments to the high demand of setting and mark-ing assessments and finalising re-ports. I would like to leave you with a few general reminders in prepara-tion for the 2018 school year.

Classes resume on Tuesday 30th January 2018, with the boarders travel day being Monday 29 Janu-ary. Formal uniforms are required to be worn on the first day of classes and as is traditional, the Prefect Induction has been sched-uled for 1:30 pm on Tuesday 30 January. Parents and friends are invited and more than welcome to attend. Please ensure that stu-dents return to School with all re-quired articles of uniform and equipment required for classes. It is recommended that students just bring a couple of books and their writing equipment for the first day until they receive timeta-bles. Booklists will be emailed early in the coming days. The first Saturday of Term 1 will see students dive into the swim-ming season with our House Swimming trials to be held at the town pool. Details of these trials will be communicated to students in their tutor groups and House meetings on day 1, Term 1, 2018. Until next year, I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

This will be my final entry for the Phoenix Rising and I would like to take the opportunity to thank the staff, students and parents from this great community for making Bec and I feel so welcome in our short time here. We have thor-oughly enjoyed every moment and will be leaving with some great memories.

I would like to make special men-tion of my team, the PCT; Mr Dar-ren Guldbransen–Head of Board-ing, Sr Kate McCartney–School Nurse, Ms Flo King-Student Ser-vices, Sr Bindy Brassington–School Nurse, Mrs Wendy Fleming–Year 10–12 Co-ordinator, Miss Josie Stainkey Year 7–9 Co-ordinator, Br Nathan-James–School Chaplain and Mrs Tania Van Wijk–School Counsellor. This group of profes-sionals have been a fantastic sup-port for all the students at ASSG. We are lucky to have such a pas-sionate, proactive and positive group. I wish them all the best for the future and thank them for their support during my time here.

I would also like to congratulate the Student Leaders elect and Seniors for 2018, Gully and I have worked closely with this cohort over the last few years. It is great to see the mature approach they are now taking to their schooling. I wish them all the best for their final year and leave with the confi-dence they will lead the school well.

Lastly, to the parents, thank you to all the parents who have taken a tough phone call or e-mail from me and responded with support. It is only through this type of part-nership that we can make a differ-ence. Your involvement is essen-tial, you are the student’s first teachers.

So goodbye for now, lucky for Fa-cebook I will be able to keep a

close eye on ASSG in the future. I look forward to hearing about the sporting, academic and cultural successes of students. I’m sure we will see you again soon. Eddies does compete in Confro after all.

On the last day of lessons, the Year 7 HASS classes put their learning into practice. They took over the Old Gym and surrounds, turning it into a business bazaar. Their job was to display the business which they had created to cater to a local market. Students had to complete a design brief which included busi-ness name, logo, card, advertising and products as part of the com-bined HASS/English unit “Business and Economics”.

The public was invited to view, sample and vote on their choice of best business offerings. Dozens of people thronged the stalls and a re-al carnival atmosphere was created. It was great to see theoretical learning put into a real context which the students responded to and enjoyed.

Our thanks go to the Year 7 teach-ers, Josie Stainkey, Om Beacom-Halliday and Kylie Kempster, togeth-er with their band of willing helpers.

You will be thrilled to know that the new improved ver-sion promises to be faster and easier to use. Let’s hope that these promises are met! The old version will close on 11 December and the new version will open on 18 December. The week in between will not allow access to your ORB. To log into the new ORB after 18 December, candidates will need to go to a new address: www.OnlineRecordBook.org If you need help, you can contact the Online Record Book Helpdesk on [email protected] or by phone on 1300 438 537 (then se-lect option 1). Keep on logging Candidates are advised to keep on logging their activities over the holidays. Remember that the Award looks for a regular commit-ment to activities and is guided by the commitment of one hour per week. It may be difficult to play netball or football games over Christmas, but you can log your fitness activities, including walking the dog. Backyard cricket does count. Keep up the adventure!

Mass of Godspeed On Friday 17 November we gath-ered as a community to farewell our Year 12 cohort, along with ours and God’s blessing. The Gos-pel reading was taken from St John and is often referred to as the High Priestly Prayer (part of the farewell discourse). Jesus, knowing his time on earth was soon to end, gave thanks to God for his ministry and prayed for his disciples as he charged them to continue God’s work on earth. Je-sus asked God to bless and pro-tect the disciples and keep them united. In my address to the de-parting Year 12s I said that this was an apt reading for their final service. Jesus had spent many years guiding, teaching, encourag-ing, and where necessary, correct-ing the disciples. Similarly, stu-dents have been guided, taught, encouraged and corrected by sig-nificant people in their school life. Now. Just as the disciples had to continue their lives and work with-out Jesus our Year 12s have to continue their lives and future study or employment, leaving be-hind some of the support struc-tures and people they have been used to. As a School, we have done our part, we trust that we have given our departing students the necessary knowledge, skills and character to now take on a new life journey. The Mass of God-speed then, was our final oppor-tunity to say farewell, to bless our 12s, and wish them Godspeed into the world.

Chapel Prefects: Farewell and Welcome It was with both joy and a bit of sadness that we said farewell to our 2017 Chapel Prefect, Duncan Elliott (Belfast Station, Winton). Duncan embraced the role of Chapel Prefect enthusiastically, continuing the duties and stand-ards set by Sam Meteyard (Milray

PAGE 5 ISSUE NO 12/2017 05 DECEMBER 2017

Station, Pentland) in 2016. Over the last 5 years, the role of the

Chapel Prefect has expanded to a very active one, requiring a great deal of time and commitment. It also means a close association with the Chaplain. I always appre-ciated Duncan’s presence and sense of humour in the sanctuary each week. I also appreciated his leadership of the serving teams and working to ensure we had everyone ready to go. Duncan, a huge thank you and blessings for your future.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome our Chapel Prefect elect for 2108; Connor Rose (Bede Sta-tion, Aramac). Connor has shown commitment to the Chapel since arriving in 2014 when he became part of the voluntary morning chapel services. He is keen to fur-ther explore the role of student in-volvement in chapel and hopes to see an increased student presence in leading the services in 2018.

Chapel Servers: Thank you A big thank you to all our serving teams this year. Unfortunately too many to mention. Each House pro-vides a group of students to take on various roles. This is often a great leadership training opportuni-ty and many servers have gone on to become School leaders; Cap-tains, Vice Captains, Chapel Pre-fect, and Prefects. This reflects the commitment that many of them give; some often filling in at the last moment for an absent student. Others, taking on roles other than they trained for to help fill gaps. As Mr. Fleming mentions now and then, you would be hard pressed finding another school who could match the serving teams that Souls produces. I’d wager that they are also better than some students in theological colleges.

Chapel Musicians: Thank you Under the leadership of Leslie Croker, and Wendy Fleming we have a great music contribution to our Chapel services. Each week Wendy accompanies our students

who sing with gusto. I have been impressed with the significant change in student participation in singing over the last 5 years. Leslie and the music students have also added significantly to our services whether as instrumentalists or vo-calists. Again, too many to men-tion individually. Thank you all for the outstanding gift you share with us. I certainly look forward to your continued contribution and hope to even see others ways we might be able to share in your talents. Thank you to all of you.

Staying Healthy and Connected in the School Holidays Holidays can be a time for fun and relaxation, but it can also be a time of year when students are taken away from friends and their usual social supports. Below is some information from Headspace to help you support young people to stay in a healthy headspace in the school holidays (https://headspace.org.au/). 1. Encourage them to stay connected: Social relationships are important to your young person’s general well-

being. Encourage them to keep in contact with friends over the holidays. Friends can provide both play and sup-port, and spending time with friends is also important for keeping and building on existing friendships.

2. Encourage them to stay involved: Encourage involvement with volunteer work, hobbies, clubs or commit-tees, or sports – these can help young people feel connected to their wider community. Participate with them when you can.

3. Encourage physical activity: Physical activity is important for everyone’s health and wellbeing. Even small activities, like walking around the block, can help relieve stress and frustration, provide a good distraction from worrying thoughts, improve concentration and improve mood. If your young person is struggling to get active, find a physical activity that you both enjoy and can do together (e.g. swimming, playing sports with friends or cycling) and make a plan to do it regularly.

4. Encourage a regular routine: Getting a good night’s sleep helps young people to feel energised, focused and motivated. Adolescence is a time when a number of changes to the “body clock” impact on sleeping pat-terns and young people are more likely to have problems with sleep. Developing a sleeping routine can help. Encourage your young person to wake up around the same time each day, get out of bed when they wake up, and go to bed around the same time each night. Avoiding caffeine after lunchtime, having a quiet, dark and un-cluttered bedroom and shutting down electronic devices before bed can also help them to get a good night’s sleep.

5. Encourage healthy eating habits: Eating well doesn’t only reduce the risk of physical health problems, like heart disease and diabetes, but it can also help with sleeping patterns, energy levels, mood, and general health and wellbeing. A good balanced diet with less junk food/ lots of sugars and more vegies, fruit, whole grains and plenty of water will ensure your young person has all of the vitamins and minerals to help their body and brain function well.

6. Encourage play! Devoting time to just having fun can help to recharge your young person’s battery, revitalise their social networks and reduce stress and anxiety.

For many students social media will be an important way to stay connected with friends over the holidays. Psy-chologists, who are experts in the mind and emotions, recommend these tips have a healthy life online (http://compassforlife.org.au/about-psychology-week/) 1. Build relationships: Psychological research shows real-life social contact gives you the skills you need to use

technology in ways that are good for you. Cultivate relationships offline as well as online.

2. Maintain perspective: Seeing the perfect lives of celebrities or friends can make you feel low. But remember these are just heavily edited highlights, designed to show a certain image to the world. People who keep it real on social media are actually less stressed and feel better connected than those who pretend. Your worth is not dependent on your number of likes, so avoid competing and be genuine online.

3. Check less: “Constant checkers” are people who are always on social media or get notifications pushed to their phone constantly; they are more stressed and get less done. Turn off constant notifications and limit when you check to certain times of day.

4. Connect with your family: The internet can make friendships stronger, but can create a wedge within fami-lies. Switch off the computer and spend time connecting, in person. Really engage with the people around you in the here and now.

5. Switch off to sleep: Screen time is linked with poor sleep. And poor sleep has been linked to problems with physical health, mental health, work and study. Turn off all phones, devices, computers and television an hour or more before going to bed. And remember that face-to-face contact with friends and family has actually been shown to help you sleep better.

6. Choose friends, not bullies: Being trolled or bullied online can be deeply upsetting and hard to ignore. Con-sider reporting, blocking, unfollowing or unfriending any person who repeatedly posts material that offends you.

PAGE 6 ISSUE NO 12/2017 05 DECEMBER 2017

The Pastoral Care Team would also like to take this oppor-

tunity to thank Mr Lee for his role as our Pastoral Care Team

leader, and Mrs Lee for her time as Year Level Coordinator

this year. We wish them the best of luck in their future en-

deavours!

Page 7

Build an online social network that enriches your life.

7. Be a good citizen: Being on the receiving end of negativity online (or even dishing it out) is bad for you. Studies show that these interactions can leave you with social and emotional issues. Help create a positive en-vironment online. If you witness bullying online, consider responding. Research suggests that ‘bystanders’ who witness bad behaviour can discourage online bullies and actually help the victims.

8. Think big picture: Images can spread like wildfire online. Before sending an image or video to anyone, think about what it would be like if your teacher, mother, or future employer saw this image. If you feel uncomforta-ble taking and sharing an image of yourself, better not to. It is your right to say no.

9. Break out of your ‘technococoon’: Spending too much time locked away with technology can lead to poor-er health and fitness and can be a sign you are avoiding real-life problems. Find a supportive friend, family member or school advisor and start talking about what is troubling you. You can then start to solve the prob-lems causing you stress and engage more fully with life.

10.Choose support wisely: Stay well connected with a range of friends to avoid a downward spiral. If you need help, look to a GP, a mental health professional like a psychologist, a headspace centre or trusted family and friends. You can also connect to a moderated forum like those on the ReachOut website.

Instrumental Music Leslie Croker Instrumental Music Co-ordinator Our final few performances for 2017 were at Preliminary Prize-Giving and Awards Day. Kasey O’Donoghue enter-tained the guests as they arrived for Preliminary Prize-Giving, and Concert Band accompanied the National An-them. Awards Day was a busy event for some of our musicians. Stage Band played a half-hour set while our guests were seated, and Concert Band played for the Processional, National Anthem and Recessional. The Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 Choirs in Junior School, along with the Senior Choir, spent several weeks learning their parts for the traditional song, Wade in the Water. Selected students from each of the Junior Choirs joined together with the Senior Choir to perform the song on Awards Day. They all did a fantastic job learning the three-part arrangement, and sang beautifully on stage. The final performance item was our Senior Music class who gave a lovely rendition of Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson. PHEP Kurtis West has returned from his trip to Seattle with the Pacific Honours Ensemble Program (PHEP). Here is a brief recount of the experience by Kurtis: “Last Wednesday was the day I returned from PHEP and landed in Australia. For me the event was definitely dif-ferent to what I expected. It started off with a little sightseeing around Seattle. We went to the hotspots, the space needle and the museum of pop culture. We even got to walk on the Washington Huskies NFL field and play on it. On the third night we had the opportunity to see the Seattle Symphony play Harry Potter live - while we watched the movie, they played the music. It was incredible. But before we knew it the “fun” was over and the music began. We rehearsed with special and well-known American conductors as well as having the pleasure of playing with the incredible Julian Bliss. My favourite conductor was Mr Brian Balmages, who happened to be the one who composed the piece that he conducted. It was certainly an experience. Over in America, most of their music was strongly military and marching band related; none of the Australians were thinking thundering drums and pounding cymbals! Instead, we expected a more classical and orchestral feel to the music, but this meant that we learnt something different to what we were ready for. This allowed us to build on our different playing styles and ways we play to certain genres of music. While it was good over there, it was even better to get back to the nice 30-degree heat of North Queensland!” 2017 has gone by in a flash and I’m incredibly proud of all that our Instrumental Music students have accom-plished. Have a fantastic Christmas and I look forward to doing it all again next year!

Sport News Sport News Natasha Johnson Secondary Sports Co-ordinator Inter-School Sport As the school year draws to a close I would like to offer my thanks to all of the staff, parents, students and mem-bers of the All Souls St Gabriels School Community who have provided not only their assistance but donated their time to our sporting teams this year. It has been a pleasure working with you all and I know that students have appreciated all of your efforts and involvement. 2017 has been a very successful year for All Souls St Gabriel’s with respect to sport. We not only defended the In-ter-School Cross Country School Championship but increased our tight grip on the shield for the 12th year in a row. We hosted Inter-School Athletics and with the home ground advantage took out a clean sweep of all trophies on offer. In team sports, we won the School Championship Shield for Girls Tennis, Cricket, Rugby League and most recently Boys Tennis. Out of the 9 School Championships on offer we won 6 of them. This is a mean feat in its self and all students and coaching personal should be very proud of their efforts. Individually, we also shone with 54 students being selected in Charters Towers representative teams, 17 students in North Queensland teams and one in a Queensland Schools Representative Team. It was lovely to reward many of our high achievers at our Annual Awards Day two weeks ago. A list of the major sporting prize-winners appears elsewhere in this edition. A full ASSG calendar for 2018 will be published on the website in due course; however, please note below our key dates for next year. Junior School Tina Akers Head of Junior School Looking back over the year has given me time to pause and reflect on what we have achieved as a School. Over the last couple of weeks we have acknowledged the academic, sporting and cultural achievements of our students at Preliminary Prize Giving and hon-oured those who have excelled, on Awards Day. The awards, presen-tations and celebrations represent much of what makes All Souls such a wonderful place to be. I would add that this shared sense of excitement and enthusiasm for all that we do, each and every day at All Souls St Gabriels, is more important than any one prize or shield or trophy. Our staff are deeply invested in finding and nurturing the immense potential inside all students, so that they are equipped to explore the boundless possibilities that lie ahead of them. To do this takes determination, hard work and a commitment to the pursuit of ex-cellence. I thank all of our teach-ing, support and ancillary staff who have invested so much of themselves and their tremendous expertise in the pursuit of this vi-sion for the benefit of our students and our School. I am extremely privileged to work with such a dedicated team. As the year comes to a close, I wish the Year 6 students all the very best as they move on into the next phase of their education, Sec-ondary School. We will miss their leadership, cheerful faces, friend-ship and the support they have given to our younger students throughout the year. At All Souls we are a strong, loyal and caring community – this is our greatest strength and it does not happen by accident. We are a re-

silient community. A community who have come together to pro-vide support for our families who have faced great sadness and challenging times. Every individu-al contributes to the strength of our School – in Mind Body and Spirit. I thank each and every one of you for your love, your support and your kindness.

Thank you to the parents who have contributed in small, large and unimaginable ways. Thanks for helping your children in the learning process; the partnership between home and school is greatly valued. Thank you to all members of our School community for the support you have given to our students, the staff and to me personally. It is truly very much appreciated. To those of you who are leaving us for new places, we wish you all the very best. You will contin-ue to be in our thoughts and prayers. We look forward to seeing the children refreshed and ready to share many new experiences, and celebrate their achievements and successes in 2018. On behalf of all the JS staff, I would like to wish everyone a peaceful Christmas and a refresh-ing and safe holiday. I hope that you and your children enjoy many occasions to have fun as a family in the weeks ahead.

Head of Boarding

Darren Guldbransen Head of Boarding

The 2017 school year has come to an end, and we are again thinking where did the year go? It has been a very busy but rewarding year for us all, and as I sat at Awards Day this year and listened to what our students had to say, I felt we are getting a lot of things right.

Year 12s Congratulations to our graduating Year 12 class. Personally, I would like thank all our Year 12 boarders for being a part of our boarding community, and for the contribution they’ve made while they have been here. It is always a very special mo-ment watching them walk out of chapel, all together for the final time as a student group. They don’t even resemble the tiny, quiet little people that got dropped off at the beginning of Year 8. They have cer-tainly grown up and are ready to di-ve into the next part of their lives. I wish them every success for the fu-ture and hope to see them all back here soon, although hopefully not too soon. Some have already picked up jobs or apprenticeships, but I know many are waiting patiently for their OP score to see which courses they will get into at University. For those who are not sure yet of what they want to do, or have secured a job, I say don’t stress, life has a way of working itself out. It always makes me chuckle when our kids come back for a visit after six months or a year and they tell me they wish they were back at school, it was so much easier.

Congratulations to our Year 11 stu-dents who have been given leader-ship positions for next year, they are well deserved. I know they, along with all of your Year 12 class, are going to do a great job leading us forward.

Farewells Unfortunately we are farewelling a couple of our boarding staff again this year, but thankfully for us we

have readymade replacements who will step into the roles at the begin-ning of next year.

Mrs Teneil Smale will step down from her role as Senior Resident of Alban Dormitory to take up a fulltime teaching position at Rich-mond Hill Primary School. Teneil has been a terrific servant for our school, starting here as a teachers aid in Junior School before taking on a fulltime job in boarding. Mrs Vanessa Herring, who is currently our relief supervisor in Alban, will be taking over from Teneil next year which is terrific for us and should be a pretty easy adjustment for the girls.

Brendan Travers is also leaving his role as Senior Resident of Ramsay Dormitory. Bear is moving interstate with his girlfriend to pursue a new career path and he will be greatly missed here. Bear was not only a major cog in our boarding team but he also did a huge amount of work with our rugby league program, and has been the manager of our Con-fraternity Team for the past few years. Rhett Butler will be stepping up from his current relief supervi-sor’s role into the Ramsay position and it too should be an easy transi-tion for our boys and their families.

I want to thank both of these very special people for everything they have done for our school, and es-pecially our boarders.

Thankyou Finally I would like to thank every-one who has had a hand in helping make our boarding machine oper-ate. Everyone from the boarding staff to the kitchen, grounds, clinic, academic, office, cleaning and sup-port staff play a vital role in our school, and in making our boarding operation what it is. Thank you also to all our parents because without your trust in us we would not have the school we have.

That’s it for now. Enjoy your holi-days, Xmas and New Year. I look forward to seeing everyone in 2018.

Davin Marshall Senior Resident

We have officially bid farewell to our 2107 seniors with an emotional God Speed chapel service and a lovely Valedictory dinner on Friday night. For me it is a time of a little sadness but mostly happiness as I watch another group of seniors move onto the next stage of their lives. To watch them develop from homesick young boys into decent and mature young adults, who are well and truly ready to face the challenges ahead, has to be one of the most rewarding transformations to be involved with. So to Ky and Kade, Noel, Duncan, Joe, Caleb, Brayden and Eric, thank you for your leadership in the dormitory this year and all the best in your fu-ture endeavours.

2017 has been a great year for Page Dormitory with success in many areas of the school. We have had great success on the sporting field whether it is the Age Champi-ons or the boys who participate with no chance of winning but give it their best anyway. We have also had many boys rewarded for their academic achievements both at Preliminary Prize giving and also at Awards Day. The general conduct of the Page boys also receives some positive comment and their behav-iour is a credit to them. Well done on a great year boys.

Well done to the Year 11 boys who have received leadership titles for next year. We have been lucky once again in Page dormitory to have a group with several boys worthy of leadership positions. Unfortunately that means some will miss out on a prefect role but they can still be ef-fective leaders within the dormitory and also within the wider school community. Well done to Darby Godfrey who has been named Page House Captain and Connor Rose who has been named Chapel Pre-fect. They now have the job of de-veloping into those roles and mak-ing them their own.

PAGE 18 ISSUE NO 12/2017 05 DECEMBER 2017

I look forward to next year with some excitement as it is always in-teresting to see how the boys come back slightly changed and a bit more grown up. There is also the interest in seeing the new crop of year 7s and the challenges of helping to settle them in and be-come self-sufficient boarders.

Thank you to all of the Page Dor-mitory parents for your trust and confidence in letting us care for your boys. It is always a privilege. Have a great holidays and I will see you next year.

Feetham Dormitory

Jake Diery Senior Resident

Another year done and dusted and Feetham dorm has had yet another great term. The boys can all go home now and enjoy some time for themselves. A few of the boys are not happy about the end of term but, as it means home to work. We have had a very busy end to the year and we decided to have a BBQ a couple of weeks ago to end the Year and to also say goodbye to our Year 12’s in Feetham dorm. I would like to wish Casey Rankine, Clancy Schaefer, Lance Shephard and Darcy Baldwin all the best and they will be missed come next year. It is always a sad time of the year saying goodbye to them but out with the old and in with the new. As we also found out what the leaders for next year will be Feeth-am dorm has ended up with 4 Year 12 leaders for next year. Tim Ievers School Captain, Toby Rankine Vice-Captain, Ben Wilkinson Perfect and House Captain and Darcy Meehan Prefect. I wish you guys all the best and look forward to working with you next year in the dorm.

At the BBQ we had a few awards and a bit of fun to end the year, and we also had the slush machine that has only taken me 18 months to pick up. We all sat down and

talked about the good things that Feetham had achieved and we also talked about the bad things that had happened during the year. The awards that got handed out were the Dormies choice, the Feetham cup, most improved, and the tip-ping awards. The Dormies choice is for that bloke that does whatever it takes to keep the dorm running smoothly. From being a good mate or just making sure that clean-up is always done. This year the award went to Ethan Cowan.

The Feetham cup is a vote from all the boys in the dorm and I think that this is the most special award of all. The cup went to 2 blokes this year, Darcy Meehan and Casey Flanagan. The most improved went to Tom Durkin who I think has had an outstanding year and has shown us who he can be. The tip-ping was won by me but because I felt sorry for Jack Winsper who came 2nd I gave it to him. This is something that we are going to do in Feetham dorm for as long as I’m around. It is a great way to end the year and a good way to look b a c k o n i t . As we all sat and talked about the year I stated to remember a few things that deserve a mention. I noticed how big Patrick Washing-ton’s heart is and how he will not stop trying for his House. That win that the 1st footy team had out at Winton, defeating BTC. Tim Ievers wins the 800m race and goes away to Brisbane to run for the NQ team. Riley Candy pulls the All Souls 1st jersey on for the first time. Feetham and Ramsay do a trip to Townsville and all the boys are well behaved. We had 4 new Year 7’s in boarding for a few days. Then lastly the tears as the boys say goodbye at the graduation. I would like to thank the Feetham boys for another great year and I look forward to hearing all the sto-ries about the holidays next term. Finally, I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I hope your holidays are safe and

see you all next year.

Ramsay Dormitory Brendan Travers Senior Resident Finally the end of the year is upon us! The final few weeks of school followed a similar trend to the rest of the year with a hectic schedule. Ramsay was once again right in the thick of it. Valedictory and Speech Day A few weeks ago we had our an-nual awards season which official-ly wrapped up the year for our Year 12 students. Both the Prelim-inary Prize Giving and Awards Day were fantastic events but the highlight was of course the vale-dictory dinner. Much fun was had at the annual event and our four Ramsay Dorm boarders looked ex-tremely sharp in their outfits. A

big thank you must go to Ram-say’s own Harrison Finger, along with a number of other Year 11 students who worked tirelessly as volunteer servers. Thank you Har-rison. Exam Block and Travel Week 8 was the final exam block for the year meaning a lot of stu-dents headed home on the final weekend. This is always a hectic period for dorm staff as we sort out all our boarders and dorms for the end of year. Thank you to all of the parents who assisted in making it easier for us by giving early travel details, small things like this make our lives so much easier. Final Word Sadly, as many of you would al-ready know, this will be my final article as Ramsay Dormitory Sen-

ior Resident. I was lucky enough to be an All Souls student from 2002-2006 in a vastly different period for the school and jumped at the opportunity to come back as a staff member three years ago. It has been an interesting three years, in which I have learnt an immense amount about myself and life in general, but ul-timately it has been extremely enjoyable and even more re-warding. I would like to thank all of the parents in Ramsay Dorm for allowing me to be a part of your son’s lives. I was happy and excited the day I first walked into the dorm and I was happy and excited the day I walked in for my final shift. To the boys in Ramsay, it has been a pleasure gentleman. Good luck with your final school years and good luck with your lives thereafter.
