Kirwan continued, ASurrealist (Aus) is one of the mostvaluable mares in Australia, and this colt is a full-brother to a champion miler in Racing to Win (Aus) andhalf-brother to a group-winning stallion prospect inPurrealist (Aus) (Tale of the Cat), so if he can match hislooks with the racing performance of his siblings he willbe a very commercial prospect. He is arguably the bestyearling we have ever taken to the Magic Millions.@

Luck of the Irish... Adrian Nicoll of BBA Ireland has enjoyed considerablesuccess purchasing at the Gold Coast, and he signedfor the day=s second-highest priced youngster, hip 171,a Redoute=s Choice (Aus) colt out of stakes-placedTwist My Heart (Dayjur), a half-sister to Attire (Aus),the dam of champion two-year-old Fashions Afield(Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}). Nicoll said that the coltwould be trained by Flemington based David Hayes, and would be owned by a syndicate that included inter-national owners. AHe is going to be syndicated and hewill go to David, and we have already sold a good fewshares in him already,@ said Nicoll. AI thought he wasone of the nicest horses here. He is a magnificent indi-vidual.@ Waterhouse was leading purchaser, securing 12horses for $4,845,000, while the Hong Kong JockeyClub was typically active, purchasing eight forA$940,000.

Six Out of Ten... Activity at the top end of the market and steadyparticipation by international purchasers for 29 horsesin total ensured the first session closed on a pleasingnote, with an average of A$150,158, but Magic Mil-lions managing director David Chester is taking a cau-tious approach. The sale took a while to find its foot-ing, with 17 of the first 50 through the ring boughtback. At that point, the average was running atA$127,916 and 50 lots later the average dropped an-other 24 percent to A$119,179 before the impact ofWaterhouse and Nicoll=s purchases boosted the figures.Last year=s first session had only 110 catalogued and84 sold so comparisons are limited. The average wasultimately down just 3.4 percent on last year=s overallaverage of A$157,321, but Chester was circumspect, rating the sale Asix out of 10.@ He said the first day wasAa tough one for vendors but a goldmine for buyers.@ Hecommented, AThose [average] figures are distorted bythe $2-million horse and the other two that made amillion dollars,@ Chester said. AWe've probably only gota couple of others that will make the million over thenext few days, and the average will go down on Thurs-day and continue to fall. There was some great buying, and this is the first sale in 12 years where it's in thebuyers' favour. From a vendor's point of view I wouldbe disappointed. From a buyer's point of view I wouldbe over the moon.@ Cont. p3

AThere were quite a few horses I thought would makemore money,@ Chester continued. AVendors early onwere very realistic. I think the sale started too well--soup the reserves went and they had to re-adjust throughthe day,@ he said. Chester expressed significant concernover the clearance rate. AThe buyers this year havebecome much more picky and choosy... [and] theremay have been a few horses this year that didn=t comeup and improve into the sale from the initial inspection,@he offered. ABut let=s not forget that most of theseyearlings are only 13, 14 and 15 months old when theyget here.@ Magic Millions= co-owner John Singleton, saidhe was pleasantly surprised by the strength of theday's trade. "I can't remember being happy about a 20-percent drop in the past, but given some people wereexpecting prices to be down anywhere between 50 and70 percent, I think a 20-percent drop is okay," he said.

New Faces... A positive trend to emerge is activity by new faceson the buying bench, with purchases by individualsfrom Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Japan, SouthAfrica, New Zealand and the U.S. Shadai Farm's TeruyaYoshida, on his first visit to Magic Millions, gave A$700,000 for a Redoute's Choice filly from G1 Flight S. winner Unearthly (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}). JohnBrocklebank's Melbourne-based pinhooking companyBC3 Australia signed for two yearlings. The very firsthorse through the ring, hip 1, a Flying Spur (Aus) coltout of Radio Song (Unbridled=s Song) offered by BrianMarheine=s Stratheden Stud, was knocked down to BC3for A$210,000, and the same outfit signed for thesecond last horse through the ring hip 194, a colt byWidden=s popular first season sire Stratum (Aus) out ofWhirligig (Aus) (Brief Truce), for A$175,000, a greatresult off a A$30,250 service fee. Utah nativeBrocklebank launched BC3 Thoroughbreds stateside in2003 before extending to Australia last year, purchas-ing 13 horses at Magic Millions last March and declar-ing the horses were Afirst class@ and the people Aincredi-ble@. "We are sellers and we prepare horses a littledifferently to what is conventional here," Brocklebanksaid. "We take an open mind and a very scientific ap-proach. Our belief is to expose the horse to a fairamount of racing stress. There is only one way to pre-pare race density in the bone, that is to expose thehorses to that [race conditions]. I would rather havesold to someone a Kentucky Derby winner than toactually own one," he continued. "Because that is whatI do and enjoy. Look I still put on a cheerleading outfitwhen one of our horses run, because they will alwaysbe part our family."

AWith the expected downturn domestically and theAustralian dollar being as low as it is, it's a half-pricesale. That's how we've marketed it to the Asian re-gion,@ B Magic Millions managing director David Ches-ter.

"This is the first southern hemisphere sale since thedownturn and the correction that has come has been soswift it will prove quite brutal for some breeders ...sales in England, Ireland and the US since the world-wide economic downturn have been down 30 to 35percent and there is no reason why that won't be thecase here." What They=re Saying cont.

AThere is a really nice group of horses here. Theyalways assemble a good catalogue at the Millions andthis year is not different. If prices are down you wouldthink there would be some bargains out there. But theyare only a bargain if they turn out to be winners,"BFlemington trainer Danny O=Brien.

"It looks like the average is down 25 percent. If wecan hold that over the next three days, I'd say that is apretty good result in this climate," --Magic Millions principal Gerry Harvey.

AI picked out three colts at this sale and now I havetwo of them. The sale is strong given the climate. There is some good value here," B Randwick trainer GaiWaterhouse.

"The global forces are such that everyone wouldexpect a correction. I think in real terms the marketcould be down 15-20 percent. But the quality is herefrom what we've seen, so that's going to help every-body,@ B Mark Player, HKJC

ACoolmore is in a very fortunate position coming intothe Magic Millions Yearling Sale in that we are standingAustralia=s leading sire of Group 1 winners in Encostade Lago (Aus), Australia=s leading juvenile stallion inDanehill Dancer (Ire) and Australia=s leading freshmansire by winners in Fastnet Rock (Aus). Our other twoyoung stallions are off to flying starts as well with LionHeart already having a stakes winner and Magic MillionsClassic chance in Double Heart (Aus) and Antonius Pius(Ire) with a dominant Brisbane winner before December.Throw in Oratorio whose weanlings topped A$300,000more than once this year and Choisir (Aus) who ishaving a super season and hopefully our clients andourselves will have successful sales ,@ --Coolmore Australia General Manager Michael Kirwan.

TDN Feature PresentationGRADE 3 LECOMTE STAKES

CITY ZIP - SIRE OF 11 STAKES WINNERS IN 2008“Clearly a very effective sire of precocious horses.”

-Bill Oppenheim, TDN 12/31/08

2009 STUD FEE: $12,500 STANDS & NURSES

GOLDEN FAMILY FOR SIKURA BROTHERS When the three-year-old colt Patena (Seeking theGold) steps into the starting gate in Saturday=s GIII Lecomte S. at Fair Grounds, he=ll represent the third

generation of afamily that hasbeen very goodto brothers Johnand GlennSikura. He=ll alsorepresent thepower of a wantad. The story ofPatena, winnerof the $150,000Display S. atWoodbine

Dec. 6 and the 4-1 second choice in Lecomte, datesback to roughly 1989. Around that time, John andGlenn=s father John Sikura Jr. purchased a majority ofthe Thoroughbred holdings of Nelson Bunker Hunt, whowas fighting through bankruptcy. Included among therace horses, mares and foals were several stallionshares. Sikura and his sons figured they didn=t have themare inventory to support all the stallion shares, and sothey did the next logical thing. AWe put an advertisement in the Daily Racing Formlooking to do some foal shares with somebody,@ ex-plained Glenn, who now owns and operates Hill >n= DaleFarms Canada while his brother runs the Kentuckydivision. AAnd we were contacted at some point byHoltsinger, who had the mare Passing Mood.@ PassingMood, a burgeoning star in the breeding shed, wouldeventually become the dam of two Classic winners, aswell as the third dam of Patena. Holtsinger Inc., the operation founded by George M.Holtsinger and run by his daughter Joan Turner, pur-chased Passing Mood from Kinghaven Farms for$300,000 at the Keeneland November Sale in 1987. Atthe time, the nine-year-old stakes-winning daughter ofBuckpasser was in foal to Raise a Native and had al-ready produced the GSP Launch Key (Roberto).

In the summer of 1989, Passing Mood=s son by Caro(Ire), With Approval, swept Canada=s Triple Crown forKinghaven, and a year later was runner-up to In theWings (GB) in the GI Breeders= Cup Turf. Passing Moodwas named Canada=s Broodmare of the Year in 1989. The Sikuras and Holtsinger came to an agreement.Hill >n> Dale paid the stud fee on, and became the co-breeder of, the Saratoga Six filly Passing Mood wascarrying, Bar U Mood. A foal of 1990, Bar U Mood wassold as a yearling and went on to be a multiple stakeswinner for Frank Stronach. Passing Mood didn=t catch after foaling Bar U Mood, but Hill >n= Dale provided a Deputy Minister season forPassing Mood=s next mating in 1991. That matingresulted in the filly Daijin--Patena=s second dam--whowas sent through the 1992 Keeneland November saleas a weanling. John and Glenn liked the filly, andbought out their partners for $160,000 and put her intraining in Canada. Daijin developed into one of the bestthree-year-old fillies in the country in 1995, winning theStar Shoot S. and Selene S. (then a Canadian Grade I)before shipping down to finish third behind ChaposaSprings in the GI Test S. at Saratoga. Daijin made one more start after the Test, then wasretired to the Hill >n= Dale broodmare band in Kentucky. Her value as a broodmare soon soared when her full-brother, Touch Gold, won the GI Belmont S. and GIHaskell Invitational. Daijin was sent to Mr. Prospector in her first threeyears at stud and produced three modest winners. Shewould later go on to produce the unraced Gone Westfilly Speed Succeeds, who was knocked down to LiveOak Plantation for $1.45 million as a yearling, as wellas the A.P. Indy filly Serenading, a homebred who wonlast year=s Listed Belle Mahone S. at Woodbine. ButDaijin=s most accomplished runner is Handpainted, afoal of 2000. Like her mother, Handpainted was sentthrough the ring, and like her mother, was bought backby John and Glenn. John signed the ticket for$300,000 at the 2001 Keeneland September sale. Trained by Josie Carroll in Canada, Handpainted gotoff to an auspicious start at two, reeling off threestraight wins, including the Ontario Debutante S. Hand-painted lost her unbeaten record when she finishedsecond in the GII Mazarine BC S., but the defeat camewith a valid excuse. AShe was the likely champion in Canada, but she hurtherself in [the Mazarine],@ explained Glenn. AWhen theyopened the gates, she pushed off and got her footcaught under a support bar in the starting gate and toreit up pretty severely. But she still ran on well to besecond that day. I think she lost by one vote as cham-pion two-year-old filly.@ Handpainted returned at three to be second in therace her mother had won eight years earlier, the GISelene S., and added stakes wins at Fair Grounds andDelta Downs.

GRADE 3 LECOMTE STAKES

Retired alongside her dam at Hill >n= Dale, Handpaint-ed was bred to Seeking the Gold in the spring of 2005and produced her first foal, Patena, a year later. Follow-ing the theme of the family, Patena was offered atauction, but was bought back by John and Glenn for$250,000 at the 2007 Keeneland September event. AHe=s a beautifully bodied horse, but at that time hewas at a bit of an awkward stage,@ said Glenn. ASo wetook him back and decided to race him.@ Shortly after the sale Dominic Dilalla, a client of Hill>n= Dale Bloodstock Director Donato Lanni, purchasedan interest in Patena. Patena debuted with Josie Carroll in August at Wood-bine, running second in a six-furlong dash on the turf.Stretched out to two turns on the main track next out,he tired to be fourth Sept. 6 before breaking throughwith a 5-length romp in a seven-furlong maiden Nov. 9.Given a 9-2 shot in an 11-horse strong Display S.,Patena settled off the leaders, forged to the lead in thestretch and showed good resolve to hold on for the win(video). Patena now steps up against markedly better compe-tition, and does so on a new surface. Glenn is confidenthe=ll handle the switch from Woodbine=s Polytrack toconventional dirt. AThere=s no pressure to run him, and he wouldn=t rununless the trainer felt everything is okay,@ he said. AHeworked well down there.@ Patena has two recorded works at Fair Grounds. Hewent four panels in :49 3/5 (31/104) Dec. 21 andbreezed six furlongs in 1:15 3/5 (4/8) Dec. 28. Looking back at the original partnership between Hill>n= Dale and Holtsinger that 19 years later has led toPatena, Glenn reflects, AFor whatever reason, every-thing went so well with our partnership. We bred fourstakes winners together, including Touch Gold, and weprobably only bred six or seven foals together.@ On Saturday, the Sikura brothers will see if Patenahas the stuff to follow in the hoofsteps of Touch Golddown the Classics trail. -L Marquardt

WRITERS UP

EDITOR=S NOTE: Owner/breeder Jim Sapara wrote thefollowing open letter to Kentucky Governor SteveBeshear and the citizens of the state, and has provideda copy to the TDN for inclusion in today=s paper.

January 5th, 2009Honourable Steve BeshearGovernorCommonwealth of KentuckyCapitol BuildingFrankfort, Kentucky 40601

Dear Governor Beshear:

On December 15th, the Governor=s Task Force onthe Future of Horse Racing published their findings. Inthe report=s Executive Summary, the following statisticsare reported: between 80,000-100,000 Kentucky jobsare created by the horse industry, it has an annualeconomic impact of $4-billion, over $127-million inhorses are exported from Kentucky annually--not tomention the huge tourism generated by people visitingKentucky, and the goodwill the state accrues. This isbig business. I am Canadian, and I can tell you anystate or province on the continent would be proud tohave these kinds of figures.

Yet, while you are now in at least your seventhyear of indecision, your neighbors--one of them yournext-door neighbor, Indiana--have seized the initiativeand are using VLTs and what the report calls Aalterna-tive gaming revenue@ to boost purses to the pointwhere next year both Hoosier Park and Indiana Downswill be offering daily purses one-third higher than EllisPark, whose owner, Ron Geary, has referred to that asa Adeath knell@ for Ellis Park--and he=s not kidding.Horses, trainers, veterinarians, gamblers--they all followpurses; the bigger the purses, the better the horses.Nobody disputes that. The task force=s subcommitteeon Industry Financial Matters found that: Apurses havegrown nationwide at tracks that have alternate gamingrevenue. Currently, 15 of the nation=s top 20 tracks intotal purses are now or will soon have purses subsi-dized with alternate gaming revenue.@ The subcommit-tee went on to say: ARacetracks with alternative gamingare projected to see a combined increase in annualpurses of 45.5 percent by 2013. This compares to ananticipated decline of 11.9 percent at tracks withoutsuch gaming revenues.@ Even Churchill Downs wasforced to cut purses in its 2008 Fall meet.

Kentuckians, wake up and smell the coffee. Thereis competition out there--Indiana, Pennsylvania, noweven Maryland. The competition is moving forward, andyou are standing still. Take action before it is too late.

This is my 26th year in this Industry and I havebeen to Kentucky once or twice every year, thoughhave missed two occasions because of health reasons.

I have always made purchases there--even thoughsomewhat conservative compared to some buyers.

The point I am trying to make is that it was alwaysthe only place to go when you wanted to purchaseworld-class thoroughbreds and it was one place whereany Ablue collar Joe@, a Sheikh, or whoever, could cometo dream that one of these fine animals could give thema Ahigh@ which couldn=t be reached in any other way. Iknow because I have been there.

The part is not about money. It is about beautifulhorses, great people, great companies like Fasig-Tiptonand Keeneland. They draw to their markets peoplefrom all over the world, be it plumbers, princes; CEO=s,doctors, lawyers, pipefitters, nurses, mothers,grandmothers--they all assemble several times a year atsale time in Kentucky to be part of the magic of thisIndustry so maybe, just maybe, they can grab a pieceof it. So to you, Governor, and the Citizens of Ken-tucky, I am just a neighbour who has been there andwants part of this magic to continue. Nowhere in theworld have I seen people from so many countries anddenominations gather and get along so well.

So, I hope, Kentucky and its Citizens become lead-ers instead of followers. You have a large stake in thisindustry--please realize it and do what you can to help itsurvive and prosper in Kentucky.
