Tears of Joy... Jody and Michelle Huckabay, who own and operatethe Kentucky-based Elm Tree Farm, have the tear ductsof daughter Caroline to thank for yesterday=s $250,000session topper. Back in 2000, Jody purchased a strap-ping daughter of Green Dancer as a yearling for$25,000 at the September Sale. Rumba Punch wouldgrow to be nearly 17 hands, but she was injured in herlone start as a two-year-old and had to be retired. TheHuckabays sent Rumba Punch through the 2002 No-vember Sale as a broodmare prospect. That=s whenCaroline, just five years old, turned on the waterworks. AWe had some partners and we had every intention ofselling Rumba Punch,@ explained Jody. ABut Carolinelooks up at me and starts crying and asking me not tosell her horse. So I was a parent that day.@ Huckabay bought out his partners and signed theticket for just $7,000. AWe were like, well, what are we going to do withher now?@ laughed Jody. Fast forward six years, and Rumba Punch is now thedam of four horses. Elm Tree sold the first, Makani(Runaway Groom), for $57,000 as a yearling, thenbought back Better Than Swiss (Tomorrows Cat) as ayearling for $20,000. Rumba Punch=s third foal was theLion Heart colt Lyin= Heart, who sold to Kirk Robinsonfor $100,000 at last year=s Fasig-Tipton July Sale. As atwo-year-old of >08, Lyin= Heart emerged as a solidhorse in the Midwest, winning the T.T.A. Sales Futurityat Lone Star and completing the exacta in the GIIIBashford Manor S. at Churchill.

His success convinced the Huckabays to offer RumbaPunch=s latest foal (she was barren in >07) as aweanling, and yesterday that Tapit colt exceeded allexpectations when Ben Glass, agent for Gary and MaryWest, purchased him for $250,000. AOh, absolutely not,@ Jody replied when asked if heexpected anything in that ballpark. AWe were hoping, ifwe got lucky, that we might get $100,000. We put himin because of Lyin= Heart, then all of a sudden Tapit justcatches on fire. But he is a very nice colt. He vettedwell and we got two racehorse people hooked up, andit was just a very pleasant surprise.@ Tapit, who willstand the 2009 season at Gainesway for $35,000, isthe sire of GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Star-dom Bound. WinStar Farm was the immediate underbidder, withWoods Edge Farm=s Peter O=Callaghan also in the mix, according to Huckabay. Asked to compare yesterday=s session topper withLyin= Heart, Jody offered, AThey were two totally differ-ent horses. This horse looks like he can run a route ofground and is just a very good, long-legged, lanky colt.Lyin= Heart was very muscular and very well put-to-gether, but he was built like a Quarter Horse. I thinkthis will be a bigger, leggier horse, while Lyin= Heart is amore compact horse, like his father.@ Rumba Punch iscurrently in foal to Cherokee Run. On a day when weanlings accounted for the top sixprices, Huckabay said he was surprised at the ongoingstrength of that sector of the market. AWe=ve been trying to buy a few mares, and themares you really want, they=re fairly strong. But theweanlings are unbelievable,@ he said. AI think it=s ex-tremely strong if you have the physical and jumpthrough all the hoops; it=s a very strong sale. But if youdon=t--if you don=t--then it=s another story. And we=vebeen there as well.@ As for the success of the Tapit colt, Huckabay isquick to give credit where credit is due. ACaroline=s theonly reason we have Rumba Punch,@ he said. AIt=s beena blessing in disguise, let me tell you.@ -L Marquardt

Chapman Looking for Smarty Dates... Patricia Chapman and her late husband Roy enjoyedthe thrill of a lifetime when their homebred SmartyJones (Elusive Quality) won two-thirds of the TripleCrown in 2004. Chapman has been able to relive thoseglory days now that Smarty Jones=s offspring are off

and running on the race-track. Chapman was at theKeeneland November salelast week looking to add toher select broodmare band, specifically shopping formares that would work wellwith the champion, who re-tired to Three Chimneys in2005. AWe had two mares and Ijust bought three more, sothat makes five,@ Chapmansaid yesterday. ARight now Ithink that=s a good number. Imay be back next Novemberif something fits real wellwith Smarty Jones. I reeval-

uate each year. I don=t know what I=m doing, but I havegood people advising me in Robert and Case Clay andthe fabulous staff at Three Chimneys.@ One of Chapman=s newest acquisitions was Dynamist(Dynaformer--Arjunand, by Diesis {GB}) (hip 1033). Infoal to Harlan=s Holiday, the six-year-old mare sold atKeeneland Thursday for $360,000. Chapman says she has three basic criteria for pickingout mares. AI look for size, temperament and for a good family,@she explained. AThere were plenty last week that I lovedthe breeding, but they weren=t quite big enough. I lookfor a mare over 15.3 [hands].@ Chapman admits she enjoys attending the auctions. AI love walking around the sales, looking at mares andbidding,@ she commented. AThen when they get over $1million, I say, >Oh, no. I don=t want to go that high.=I could sit there and watch every horse sell. And I loveto walk out back and watch all the important people.@ Smarty Jones and his connections became a nationalphenomena in 2004, winning the Kentucky Derby andPreakness S. and drawing scores of fans to watch himgallop in the mornings at Philadelphia Park. After thehubbub of the Smart Jones days, Chapman finds an-other benefit at the sales. AIt=s like I=m incognito,@ she laughs. ANo one recog-nizes me anymore.@

Chapman keeps busy following Smarty Jones=s firstcrop to hit the track. Now seven, the stallion has eightwinners from 24 starters. His most successful runner todate is the filly Be Smart, second in the GI DarleyAlcibiades S. at Keeneland. AEvery June I go to Lexington on a tour of the farms,@Chapman said. AAnd I get to see maybe 30-40 of hisbabies. And I followthem and watch theirworks and following theirraces. It=s so exciting. Ijust love it.@ Chapman has a son ofSmarty Jones currentlyin training with theDerby winner=s trainerJohn Servis. Ritzy Jonesdebuted Nov. 3 at Dela-ware Park, finishing fifth. Through it all, Chap-man never forgets whereit all started. AI get to Lexington maybe twice a year and I go seeSmarty Jones,@ Chapman said. AHe gave us the time ofour lives and I just go and give him a pat and say>Thank you for giving us such a good time.=@ -JessicaMartini

The Feb. 28-foaled dark bay gave hisconnections a solid profit off that investment.

2916 c, Borrego--Wishful Legacy 175,000B-Mueller Farms (KY)

Consigned by Bluegrass Thor. Services, Inc (J. Stuart),agent for Mueller Farms Inc

Purchased by Blue Sky Stables Way back in 1999, David R. Mueller reached in toclaim the stakes-placed Lyphard=s Wish (Fr) mare Wish-ful Legacy for $50,000. The then-five-year-old madefive starts for Mueller and trainer James Baker, with herbest efforts a pair of consecutive runner-up finishes in$50,000 claimers at Churchill. Wishful Legacy mightnot have paid for that claim on the track, she=s turnedinto a very solid producer for the Mueller Farmsbroodmare band. Yearlings out of the mare have soldfor up to $300,000 (The Mr. Greeley male Authoritativebrought that as a short yearling at the 2004 KeenelandJanuary Sale), and have sold for $75,000 (2x) and$45,000. This weanling colt, from the first crop of dualGrade I hero Borrego (El Prado {Ire}), became hersecond-highest-priced sales horse, however, when BlueSky Stables went to $175,000 for the Feb. 11-foaledgray. John Stuart=s Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, incidently, has consigned all of the Mueller Farms-owned horses out of Wishful Legacy.

Storm Cat may have been pensioned and some of hismore popular sons, such as Hennessy, Forest Wildcatand Storm Boot, may no longer be with us, but thereare still plenty more chapters to be written in the StormCat story, judging by the past few months. Of course it has been Giant=s Causeway who hasbeen Storm Cat=s main standard-bearer in 2008, withan impressive total of 11 Northern Hemispheregraded/group winners. Tale of the Cat and StormyAtlantic--both past holders of the title of champion sireof juveniles--have also done well, each being responsi-ble for the earners of more than $7 million this year. Several cheaper sons of the Overbrook star have also

been drawing attentionto themselves, nonemore so thanBernstein, who hastaken fourth positionamong the sires oftwo-year-olds, thankslargely to his three ju-venile graded winners.Pure Prize, whose feeremains at $12,500 in2009, will surely bevery popular again fol-lowing the exploits ofPure Clan, CowgirlsDon=t Cry and Coronet

of a Baron. And Van Nistelrooy, whose fee has beencut from $25,000 to $15,000, reminded us of hisconsiderable potential when Nistle=s Crunch gained awell-deserved first graded success in the GIII Common-wealth Turf S. at Churchill Downs.

VAN NISTELROOY, h, 2000

Van Nistelrooy (named after one of Holland=s topsoccer players) was the least expensive of Ashford=s 15stallions when he stood his first Northern Hemisphereseason at a fee of $7,500 in 2004. This modest feereflected the fact that his racing career had ultimatelyfailed to fulfil the high hopes raised firstly by his power-ful pedigree and then by his first few racecourse ap-pearances. Bred by Stonerside Stable, Van Nistelrooy was con-signed to Keeneland=s 2001 September Sale. Despitethe terrible gloom which hung over proceedings after9/11, the Storm Cat colt became the second-highest-priced yearling in September Sale history, when DemiO=Byrne went to $6.4 million to secure him for theCoolmore partnership. No doubt the Coolmore team was hoping that theyoungster would develop into another Giant=s Cause-way for them. Giant=s Causeway had retired at the endof 2000 with a 13-9-4-0 career record, and there werea few similarities between the two. Both are chestnutswith a blaze and lengthy white socks (Van Nistelrooyhaving three, compared to Giant=s Causeway=s two),and they were both out of mares with some Hail toReason blood. Van Nistelrooy=s dam, the Halo mareHalory, had already been represented by four gradedwinners, most notably the GI Blue Grass S. winnerHalory Hunter, and another Halo mare had produced theGrade I winner Harlan to Storm Cat. Clearly the young-ster had a lot to live up to. The early signs were encouraging. Van Nistelrooywas ready for action in July 2002 and quickly recordedthree consecutive victories over the Curragh=s sevenfurlongs. Although he=d had to work hard to snatchvictory in a listed race and in the G2 Futurity S., hisrider claimed he was simply lazy and Van Nistelrooystarted a hot favorite to become a Group 1 winner inthe National S. on his fourth start. Although he couldn=twear down Refuse to Bend, there was still plenty ofmerit in this performance, as Refuse to Bend went onto win the 2000 Guineas.

Another defeat followed 13 days later when VanNistelrooy finished third as favourite for the G2 RoyalLodge S., in which he encountered traffic problems. Hethen became one of three Aidan O=Brien challengers forthe Breeders= Cup Juvenile at Arlington and was farfrom disgraced in finishing fifth to Vindication on anunfamiliar surface. The next news we had of Van Nistelrooy came inJuly 2003, when it was announced that he had beenretired due to injury and was heading to New Zealandto stand at Trelawney Stud. That first season in NewZealand was to produce Boundless, winner of the G1 New Zealand Oaks in March this year, but Bound-less was by no means the first to draw attention to VanNistelrooy, as his first American crop earned him atop-five finish among the freshman sires. Although Van Nistelrooy=s stud fee helped him attract186 mares in his first season, for an initial crop of 122named foals, his book of mares was probably morenotable for its quantity than its quality. He has doneoutstandingly well for a $7,500 stallion to sire fivegraded/group winners from this crop. Nistle=s Crunch isthe fifth, and he follows Set Play (GI Del Mar Debu-tante), Strike the Deal (G2 Richmond S. and runner-upin the G1 Middle Park S.), Elusive Lady (GIII TemptedS.) and Raymi Coya (G3 Oh So Sharp S.). WRITERS UP It is worth looking at the mares which have helpedhim make such a bright start. Set Play is out of anon-winning Bold Ruckus mare who made $13,000when carrying her first foal. Strike the Deal is out of anon-winning Mt. Livermore mare which cost $38,000

as a two-year-old. ElusiveLady is out of an unracedUnbridled=s Song mare, while Raymi Coya is out ofan unraced Maria=s Monmare who sold for$30,000 as a yearling.Nistle=s Crunch, for hispart, is the first foal ofSam Eye Am, a minorstakes winner over a mile.I believe he is only the sec-

ond graded winner out of a daughter of the high-classhandicap horse Island Whirl, whose eldest daughtersare 23 years old. And I think Nistle=s Crunch is the firstgraded winner to have a second dam by Henbane, astallion whose main claim to fame was that he was ahalf-brother to the Epsom Derby winner Henbit. In other words, Van Nistelrooy deserves plenty ofcredit for each of his five graded winners. I wonder whether his purchasers considered it a plusor a minus that he is inbred 3x3 to the great NorthernDancer. In retiring him to stud in Kentucky a widerrange of bloodlines was made available to him and noneof his stakes winners has Northern Dancer nearer thanthe fifth generation in the bottom half of its pedigree. The question now is how quickly Van Nistelrooy isgoing to build on his bright start. I think a measure ofpatience is going to be required, as--in common with somany of today=s young stallions--the number of maresvisiting him declined in his second, third and fourthseasons. His second crop is only half as big as his first, and his third and fourth are smaller still (he is creditedwith 44 live foals in his fourth crop, born earlier thisyear). The good news is that he attracted more than170 mares at an increased fee of $25,000 in 2008, sohis two-year-olds of 2011 should be well worth keepingan eye on.

ZENYATTA GREAT, BUT NOT HORSE OF THEYEAR By Bill Finley, special to espn.com

Zenyatta is a magnificent filly who completed a per-fect year with a rousing win in the GI Breeders' CupLadies Classic. Maybe the best filly to race this decade, she's worthy of respect, admiration, platitudes and, ofcourse, the older filly and mare championship. But that's it. She picked the wrong year to be good. Zenyatta is not the Horse of the Year. Curlin is. Historically, fillies have to beat colts to be named

Horse of the Year. Theonly exception iswhen there is the rareyear where nothree-year-old or oldermale does anythingexceptional. That has-n't been the case in2008. While Curlincertainly didn't helphis Horse-of-the-Yearcase with afourth-place finish in

the GI Breeders' Cup Classic, a race he was supposedto win, his overall body of work during the year wasoutstanding. Except for one day at Santa Anita, Curlin was thebest non-turf horse in the world. He conquered Dubai. He won the GI Stephen Foster, the GI Woodward andthe GI Jockey Club Gold Cup. For the second straightyear, he eclipsed $5 million in earnings, and he becamethe first North American-based horse to top $10 millionin career earnings. From the time he burst on the scenewith a huge maiden win at Gulfstream Park, he has hadan historic campaign. The 2008 season has been a bigpart of it. Bill Finley cont. p9

Horse of the Year ordinarily goes to a male horse whohad a special year. Curlin's year, by any definition, wasspecial. The filly Azeri was named Horse of the Year in 2002and did not face the boys, but that was a year when nomale did anything special. War Emblem was named

three-year-old champion andLeft Bank was the older horsechamp. Both had relativelymodest credentials. Since the inception of thecurrent Eclipse Award format, the only other fillies to benamed Horse of the Yearwere All Along (1983) andLady's Secret (1986). Lady'sSecret defeated males in theGI Whitney in 1986 and AllAlong won three North Amer-ican races against males in1983.

The closest thing racing has seen to Zenyatta inrecent years is Personal Ensign. Like Zenyatta, she wasseven-for-seven during her four-year-old season in1988. Like Zenyatta, she capped her year with a win inwhat was then called the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Butshe was passed over for Horse of the Year byAlysheba, the outstanding male horse to race that year. You can't fault trainer John Shirreffs and ownersJerry and Ann Moss for not running Zenyatta in theBreeders' Cup Classic. They put her in the race whereshe belonged and they collected $1,080,000 for win-ning an event where she had the competition at hermercy. But if they truly wanted to take a shot at Horseof the Year, they should have entered her in the Clas-sic. That way, she could have won the title on theracetrack. Zenyatta is a magnificent filly, but there's no prece-dent for her being named Horse of the Year over a coltlike Curlin. Maybe they'll bring her back next year andtry again and, perhaps, aim for the Classic. Until then, they're going to have to settle for being second best.

Let it Ride... There's little doubt that the nature of the Pro-Ridesynthetic surface at Santa Anita had an effect on theoutcome of the Breeders' Cup races. As is so often thecase with synthetic surfaces, front-runners had a miser-able time during the two days of Breeders' Cup racing, something that has been noted just about everywhere. Not a single Breeders' Cup race run over the synthetictrack was won wire-to-wire and deep closers wonmost. But the track also seemed biased toward outsidepaths, something few have noted. Over the course oftwo days, including the non-Breeders' Cup races, onlyone horse won from the one or two post on thePro-Ride track and that was Zenyatta, who spent mostof her race on the outside. All through the Oak Tree meet, inside posts faredpoorly. In sprints, posts one and two were a combined18-for-272 for the meet for a measly winning percent-age of 6.6 percent. Considering how the track played during the Breed-ers' Cup, one of the most impressive horses to raceover the two days was a loser. In the Juvenile, SquareEddie immediately went to the rail under RafaelBejarano, set the early pace, dropped back to third andwas then coming on again at the end to finish second. It remains to be seen how he will handle anon-synthetic surface, but he ran a tremendous raceand deserves to be near the top of anyone's list of2009 Derby contenders.
