Components of Course Evaluation
Multiple measures of evaluation are used in the course, allowing students opportunities to demonstrate their learning in
more than one way and giving consideration to individual learning styles. There are assignments that are due in each
week.
UOR Plagiarism Policy Plagiarism Students agree to produce all the work assigned in every course as their individual work, unless collaboration is required
or expressly permitted by the instructor. Plagiarism includes the use of the student’s own previously published work (in
whole or in part) or work previously submitted (in whole or in part) in any course, including within the same course,
without proper citation in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the Sixth Edition Publication Manual of the
American Psychological Association.
Students must obtain specific, written permission from their instructor, prior to the inclusion in course assignments, to
submit work the student previously submitted (in the same course or any other course) or work the student previously
published, in whole or in part.
Students will avoid all forms of plagiarism and will not submit as their own work material obtained from persons (with or
without that person’s knowledge), or from other sources such as term paper companies or the Internet. Students will give
credit (proper APA citations) for all the sources of their ideas, whether written or oral, formal or informal, published or
unpublished. Plagiarism may be grounds for dismissal from the University.
Avoiding Plagiarism Address any questions regarding plagiarism to the course instructor. Students should be aware that University of the
Rockies’ instructors utilize anti-plagiarism resources to determine the originality of submitted written work. These tools
compare students’ work with texts available in internal databases and through Internet searches.
Academic Research Academic research and papers must meet certain standards of quality recognized by the academic community. What
constitutes quality, academic research?
Primary sources written by experts in the field of study
Secondary sources supported by research in primary sources
Credible sources (experts in the area of study)
Relevant research (materials are pertinent to the area of study)
In graduate work, the use of peer-reviewed journal articles (journal articles reviewed by recognized experts in
the relevant field of study) is required
Educational websites may be appropriate in some cases but should be evaluated carefully
What sources are not acceptable for academic research and referencing?
Encyclopedias

Discussion Forums Each week you will be required to participate in topic-related conversations with your classmates in discussion forums.
These discussion forums replace the interactive activities that occur during face-to-face interaction in a classroom
environment. Within each week, your initial discussion post is due by midnight on Day 3 (Thursday). You then have until
midnight on Day 7 (the following Monday) to make the required minimum number of response posts to your
classmates. (Please note that midnight refers to the time zone in which you reside.) The Discussion Forums will
contribute 31% to the course grade.
Written Assignments There are weekly written assignments in this course. Each written assignment needs to be in APA style formatting and
include a title page and reference page. The major written assignment is the Final Paper due in Week Six and is worth
30% of your course grade. The written assignments combined will constitute 69% of your final grade. They must
reflect graduate level writing and thinking.

Week Two To be completed during the second week of class
Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this week, students will be able to:
1. Differentiate between production, operations management, and quality management (aligns with course outcomes
1, 3, 4).
2. Describe the importance of aligning operations strategy with operations activities and strategic diversity (aligns
with course outcomes 1, 2, 3, 5).
3. Compare quality management systems including Just-In-Time, Six Sigma, Baldrige, and ISO standards from a
functional diversity perspective (aligns with course outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4).
4. Critique historical management theories (Taylor, Mayo, Maslow, McGregor, Ouchi, etc.) from an operations
strategy and functional diversity perspective (aligns with course outcomes 2, 3, 4, 5).
Introduction Operations strategy: Operations management and quality management . Week Two focuses on the operations
strategy of an organization. Operations strategy is part of the strategic plan that deals with the operations and quality
assurance of an organization. Depending on the type of business (manufacturer, distributor, service, professional, etc.) the
specific operations of a firm can be very different. The strategies, however for operations management and quality
management, can be applied across these varied lines, and the functional diversity issues are the same. The readings and
multimedia for this week examine operations strategy, historical management theories, operations activities, and quality
management systems. Students consider topics in the written assignments from the perspective of functional diversity.

Week Three To be completed during the third week of class
Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this week, students will be able to:
1. Examine the importance of HRM functions in the strategic planning process of an organization (aligns with
course outcomes 1, 4, 5).
2. Explain how legislation affects HRM in the hiring and retention of key employees and in support of strategic
diversity goals (aligns with course outcomes 1, 2, 4, 5).
3. Illustrate the benefits of ongoing employee surveys and assessments to internal communication and the cultural

4. Explore the use cross-functional teams to improve organizational communication and to promote the benefits of
workforce diversity (aligns with course outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).
Introduction Human resource management. Week Three continues the exploration of cross-functional diversity with an examination
of the human resource function. Employees are the most valuable asset of any organization and, as such, human resource
management (HRM) has become a crucial function in organizational sustainability. The complexity of this area has
grown immensely due to the increasing volume of the laws and regulations governing hiring, firing, equal opportunity,
diversity, confidentiality, etc. With all of these specific regulations, the language of HRM has become complicated. The
readings this week focus on current HRM issues and practices, cross-functional teams, workforce diversity, and
communication. Students will consider workforce assessments, using teams to enhance workforce diversity, and other
significant issues related to HRM.

Week Four To be completed during the fourth week of class
Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this week, students will be able to:
1. Explore the four Ps of marketing: product, price, place, and promotion in relation to marketplace diversity (aligns
with course outcomes 1, 2, 4, 5).
2. Explain how marketing departments use segmentation, customer relationship management, and consumer
behavior to identify target markets in an increasingly diverse marketplace (aligns with course outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4).
3. Describe the role of public relations and publicity in establishing the corporate citizenship image of an
organization (aligns with course outcomes 1, 3, 4, 5).
4. Explore how doing good and being a good corporate citizen affects the organizational culture (aligns with course
outcomes 1, 3, 4, 5).
Introduction Marketing, public relations, and corporate citizenship Week Four examines marketing, public relations, and corporate
citizenship from the view of marketplace diversity, organizational culture, and social responsibility. Billions of dollars are
spent each year to convince us to buy certain goods or services, to vote for specific candidates, to request specific drugs
for illnesses we may or may not have, and to believe in the honesty and ethical nature of the message. These are some of
the goals of marketing and public relations. Depending on the type of organization, this functional area can be a
significant portion of the annual budget with the power to influence millions of consumers. With this power comes
responsibility. The readings this week consider the fundamentals of marketing, promotions, and public relations; and the
ethical responsibility for using these tools. Students will consider who’s responsible for unhealthy behavior; the
relationship of corporate citizenship and organizational culture; and offer suggestions to enhance the marketing, public
relations, and corporate citizenship of an organization.

Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this week, students will be able to:
1. Explain the roles of accounting and finance in measuring organizational performance (aligns with course
outcomes 1, 2, 4, 5).
2. Illustrate how workforce performance management systems can engage employees, support high-performance
work, and promote cross-functional diversity (aligns with course outcomes 1, 2, 4).
3. Evaluate the human resource, security, privacy, and stability issues affected by information technology and
transparency (aligns with course outcomes 1, 3, 3, 4, 5).

needs, knowledge transfer, and strategic diversity (aligns with course outcomes 1, 2, 4, 5).
Introduction Principles of measuring organizational performance and strategic diversity. Week Six examines the principles of
measuring organizational performance with a focus on strategic diversity. Measuring and monitoring performance is part
of the controlling function of management. The more astute we are as managers to establish systems that monitor specific
elements of our organization to maintain the focus on our strategic goals, the more successful we and our organizations
will become. The technological advancements prevalent in our daily lives add complexity to this function. The readings
this week explore accounting and finance, technology, organizational transparency, and strategic alignment using the
balanced scorecard. Students consider transparency and organizational performance, the BSC and strategic diversity, and
the development of an organizational diversity strategy.
