Introduction The Waterford Early Reading Program is a comprehensive early intervention curriculum, arranged into five instructional strands. The five instructional strands are then grouped by level: Level One, emergent readers; Level Two, beginning readers; and Level Three, fluent readers. The five instructional strands are:

Phonological awareness – teaches how to hear, distinguish, and manipulate sounds in words.

Phonics – teaches alphabet recognition, letter sound correspondences, decoding, and word recognition skills.

Comprehension and vocabulary – teaches word meanings explicitly and strategies for comprehending or deriving meaning from text.

Language concepts – teaches print concepts, grammar, mechanics of written and spoken language, reading readiness skills, and writing.

Fluency – teaches how to read text accurately and quickly with appropriate expression. Instruction in this area begins in Level Three once the student has a sufficient grasp of reading running text.

Reading placement – assesses students to determine where they should be placed in Waterford Early Reading Program. The tool measures students’ ability, and then automatically places them at an appropriate starting point in each instructional strand. Waterford School Manager assigns the placement tool to run before the first session of Waterford Early Reading Program.

The interest in books and their characteristics, and the ability to understand and get meaning from stories and information from books and other texts. Level One: All Sing a Rhyme and Read with Me books are age-appropriate and are about topics important to kids, such as family, animals, and nature. They are simply written with colorful illustrations, and are often silly, repetitive, or provoke curiosity. The Read with Me books are introduced with questions to pique interest and suggest things to think about while the book is being read. For example, Level One uses an assortment of traditional and modern nursery rhymes in the Sing a Rhyme books. Read with Me Books consist of books with an array of interesting topics, applicable to students in the early grades. Level Two’s Traditional Tales include American

All Aa-Zz Read with Me Book: Discover with Me – Music and Movement activities provide opportunities for students to join in singing, finger plays, chanting, and retelling stories. Many Aa-Zz Read with Me Book: Discover with Me – Drama activities suggest students retell information from the stories. For example, Mother, Mother (p. 128) suggests students dress up like the five main characters in the rhyme and act it out. The Aa-Zz Puppet Activity lessons involve students in simple and repetitive scripted or spontaneous story telling. All Lessons and Resources Level One, Aa-Zz Read with Me Book: Discover with Me – Advanced Writing activities provide practice in creative writing. Ideas to develop writing skills can be found in the Resources section, Teaching Writing pp. 374-377. Creating a Writing Corner (pp. 378-381) includes suggestions for writing experiences which focus on exploration. All Write with Me activities provide the opportunity for students to write for a purpose. These writing experiences can be shared with others to reinforce the concept that authors write for a purpose. For example, Sign Studio can be used to make a persuasive sign, Me by Me can be used to share information, and ABC Book can be used to write an entertaining story.

Level One: Many activities in the Waterford Early Reading Program motivate students to experiment and convey meanings in a variety of ways. For example, Coloring Box allows students to explore and create with a variety of colors, drawing tools, stamps, and shapes. Letter Picture Writing requires students to use their finger to trace letters on the screen, and What’s Your Name? teaches students how to spell their name. All Write with Me activities provide students with the opportunity to explore with writing conventions in an easy, fun, and non-threatening way. In addition, Lessons and Resources Level One, Creating a Writing Corner includes suggestions for encouraging students to write, draw, and explore. These activities include writing letters, shopping lists, messages, thank-you letters, birthday cards, banners, stories, as well as filling out forms, using puppets, drawing on the sidewalk with chalk, and using mailboxes to share messages.

Level One: Following directions, responding to requests, and listening for specific purposes are incorporated throughout the software. Animation accompanies all activities to provide clues to language and text. All “Comprehension” activities tests students understanding of concepts using language from the songs and books. All “Readiness” activities require students to follow directions while improving basic language comprehension. For example, Look at Details requires students to observe details in order to compare similarities and differences, and Red, Yellow, and Blue requires students to click on the indicated color. “Play and Practice” activities present a variety of fun, interactive activities to review previous lessons, and Play and Practice Tutorial guides students in






following the directions. Some activities require students to follow directions, but allow personal preference. For example, Choose a Friend (Play & Practice) allows students to select the details for the story, including the setting and the main character. As students work through the individualized program, understanding is improved as they receive positive reinforcement to support them in the learning process. Assessment activities monitor and record progress and remedial activities are automatically programmed to play until mastery is achieved. Level One: The Waterford Early Reading Program includes a range of vocabulary-rich songs and books to provide in-context language experiences. All Sing a Rhyme and Read with Me Books are age-appropriate and are about topics important to kids, such as family, animals, and nature. They are simply written with colorful illustrations and are often silly, repetitive, or provoke curiosity. These factors contribute to the engaging nature of the books and the ability for students to relate them to their own lives. For example, Sing a Rhyme - I Touch My Nose Like This includes words and illustrations for facial features. Along with the books, several activities develop vocabulary. For example, Vocabulary Introduction & Assessment (Read with Me) and Vocabulary Introduction & Assessment (Sing a Rhyme) review definitions of words that will appear in the books. Students click on the “colored” word to see a picture and hear a definition. Many songs such Sound Songs are designed to encourage vocal participation and are programmed to play repeatedly. All “Readiness” activities help prepare students for conversations and academic discussions. For example, Numbers 1-5 teaches basic counting skills; Over, Under, and Through and Top, Beside, and Bottom teach preposition skills necessary for group play and interaction; and Parts of the Face (Body Parts) teaches names for common body parts. Level One: Many activities in the Waterford Early Reading Program support students in sharing experiences. Many “Readiness” activities help prepare students for conversations. For example, First, Next, and Last reviews sequencing language helpful in relating the beginning, middle, and end of a book or experience; Over, Under, and Through as well as Top, Beside, and Bottom teach preposition skills necessary for communicating personal experiences and retelling stories; and Parts of the Face (Body Parts) teaches names for common body parts. Introduction Waterford Early Math & Science is comprised of three levels. All three levels are designed to provide a full year of daily instruction. Students receive daily instruction from all four instructional strands: Daily Activities, Number Sense, Abstract Math and Reasoning, and Science Concepts.

Based on five years of research into how children learn math, the developers of Waterford Early Math & Science concluded that the key to a successful math program is a balance between a conceptual approach and one that stresses basic skills. Waterford researchers examined current science practices and theories and reviewed national standards to design a full, research-based curriculum encompassing state core guidelines as well as those recommended by the National Science Education Standards (NSES) and the National Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).

Each level includes four essential components: Yearlong On-line Curriculum. A

full year of daily research-based instruction.

Teacher Materials. Teacher guides, songbook, masters, worksheets, and multimedia materials to aid teachers in delivering a comprehensive Mathematics and Science curriculum.

Student Materials. Personal sets of books covering numbers, math concepts and science. Music videos and experiment videos.

Teacher Training. Ongoing support for teachers in using each Waterford component to create a balanced curriculum.
