Spartans Rugby Carnival

Over the holidays our Under 12A and Under 13A teams attended the inaugural Spartans Cup Rugby Carnival which was hosted by Ipswich

Grammar School. Our Under 13 boys played against Ipswich Grammar A and B teams in what could be described as a ‘character building expe-

rience’. To our boys, credit against a much stronger opposition that

continued to turn up for their mates, supporting each other, playing

their best and playing good footy in patches. I was really proud of

the grit shown by these boys in the face of a very dominant opposi-

tion and am confident that it was a good learning experience for the

start of the season.

Our Under 12 boys were a very different story! After beating Too-

woomba Grammar School on Monday morning they were beaten

convincingly by a very strong Gregory Terrace team. On Tuesday

morning the boys played outstanding 15 man rugby against Ipswich

Grammar School to defeat them and secure a place in the finals

against Gregory Terrace. Off the back of a strong win against IGS,

the boys came into the final and played from my point of view the

best game of rugby that the team has played this season and de-

feated Gregory Terrace 19-12 to claim the Cup. It was a great mo-

ment for the boys and with one win each for ATC and GT in the 12A

team we are looking forward to a great third encounter olater in the

term. Congratulations to Jonte Roberts and Charlie Neumann for

captaining the boys to a great win and to the individual players who all put in outstanding performances, particular against IGS and GT. The

two war cries following the game were amongst the best I have heard this year! Thanks to IGS for hosting and to GT in particular for two great

games of rugby in particular.

AFL Camp and Holiday Games

On the holidays we held our first ever AFL Holiday Camp and by all reports it was a huge success. The camp featured a variety of AFL skill drills,

games, kicking analysis and a video analysis session with former Brisbane Lions player and great club support, Anthony Corrie. Congratulations

to Fiona Kearney, Chris Hoskin and Tim Sparkman in particular for a great camp.

Whilst the younger teams enjoyed a few weeks off footy, our Under 12 and Under 13 teams played games on the last weekend of the holidays.

Under 12 Blue and Green were valiant in defeat and provided many moments of positive footy which bodes well for the final 6 weeks of the

competitive season before finals. The game of the round was the Under 13s game against traditional powerhouse Aspley Hornets. This same

team defeated ATC Under 12 in the final last year, so the boys were keen to get one up on them this year. In a solid team performance in

howling westerlies, our ATC boys proved too strong winning the game by 4 points. This victory has rocketed our boys to the second place in

the division and a chance at the minor premiership. Well done lads!

Rugby and Football vs Scots College

Tomorrow (Friday 17 July) our 12A Rugby and 7A Football teams will be playing Scots College from Sydney. Scots are touring Brisbane and SE

QLD and we look forward to welcoming them to ATC. Games will be played on Jack Bowers at 12.45pm followed by a BBQ for players. All

spectators are welcome.

State Selection—Rugby League

Rugby Union

After a change in scheduling of draws for this weekend, we will be running a rugby skills clinic for all players. Like our Football Festival which launched our soccer season, this is a great opportunity to run a skills clinic to work on position specific and unit skills as well as our target areas of Catch and Pass, Track and Tackle, Dominant Ball Carry, Continuity, Attack, Defence, Unit Work and Game Sense.. All players are to be at ATC at 8.15am on Saturday morning wearing ATC rugby uniform with boots, mouthguard and a water bottle ready to train. We would also like boys to bring another shirt or jersey other than their ATC jersey so we can play games at the end if time permits. Parents are welcome to drop their sons off and collect them at 10.30am or to stay around to watch the boys train. Next Saturday we are looking forward to a great round of games against Nudgee College at Nudgee College to open our season.

Basketball

Trials were held for basketball teams yesterday afternoon and boys have been notified via email of the teams that they have

been placed into. We have also placed a list on the Sports Noticeboard outside the Sport and Activities Office and on the exter-

nal wall of Mr Stewart’s office. Training times, coaches and games times for our trial games against Moreton Bay College are

below. Boys are to arrive at the venue 30 minutes prior to the game.

Boys are to wear ATC Basketball Shorts and ATC Sport Socks which can be purchased from Gentleman Junior and will be provided with a jersey

to wear during games. Boys are to wear their ATC PE shirt to games. Training will be held on the ATC Courts. In the event of rain, training will

be moved to a covered area or classroom.

Footy is back on after a well earned break. Both Youth and Junior teams have games this weekend. Excepting the Under 11’s who have a BYE.

Over the holidays we held our first ATC AFL camp. 48 boys attended over 2 days and enjoyed a variety of activities including some athletic testing such as the vertical leap test, the beep test ,as well as filming each boy kicking off right and left boot. We had the honour of Anthony Corrie (a former professional Australian Rules footballer with a 56 game AFL career ) visit and spend some times in analysing each boys kick , offering valuable feedback for each and every player.

At all times the boys showed great enthusiasm for each and every activity , this included the feeding frenzy at lunch time.

I would like to thank Chris Hoskin, Tim Sparkman and Ben Allen -Anken for their efforts in planning and conducting the camp.

Thanks also to Matthew Snare and Shain Dunkinson who assisted over the two days. A final thanks goes to Justin Hoskin ( Nephew of Chris) for his guest appearance on the second day, a former Port Power rookie who spent much of his time with the boys and was a great role model of what they can aspire to if they stick at their football.

Final thanks goes to our footballers who displayed respect for their coaches and a willingness to engage throughout the 2 days

Results Last weekend the Youth teams returned to play.

Both 12 Greens and 12 Blue showed great courage and determination but were unable to secure a win.

The Under 13s however showed a return to form to defeat an upset Aspley.

Wynnum def 12 Greens –14.15-99/1.0-6

Sherwood def 12 Blues-7.8-50/4.2-26

ATC def Aspley-4.0-24/3.2/20

Youth teams now have 5 more games left to play before the finals series begins. This is when it gets really exciting.

These boys have shown great leadership and demonstrated the qualities of the Irish Warrior– using their head , hands and

heart to lead their team on and off the field. Well Done.

Club BBQ

Tuesday 21st August will be our next Club BBQ—the Under 12’s are running this one so it would be great to get some volunteers

to help run the BBQ . All the supplies will be there ready to go. For those of you still to contribute the $ 5 , please hand this to

your manager this weekend or directly to me next Tuesday afternoon. The boys certainly enjoyed having a sausage and a drink

after training.

COLD WEATHER COMMITMENT—HEATED POOL—NO PROBLEMS

The cold weather has come out to greet us for the first week of term 3 swimming but I have been very im-

pressed with the number of swimmers who have come out into the cold conditions to be involved in swim-

ming for this term. The swimmers are busy preparing for the

first meets of the year. We have a number of winter competi-

tions during the next 8 weeks and then we will quickly move in-

to the summer competition period. Term 3 is the time to start

some swimming sessions if you are thinking of competing this

summer.

The Ambrose Treacy Swimming Club is operating and taking

memberships throughout this term. If you are interested in join-

ing the swimming club, contact us at [email protected] .

There are pathways within swimming club for recreational and

competitive swimmers. Hope to see you getting involved.

The term 3 ‘learn to swim’ program has started this week in our warm heated pool. There are still some

vacancies in lessons. If you are interested in getting a head start on the summer rush, then contact us on

[email protected] .

ADULT SQUADS—It is never too late to become a swimming adult. It is a great way to keep fit without the

impact of other activities. We have programs to suit all levels of swimmers from ‘tadpoles’ through to

‘sharks’. We cater for all standards of swimmers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9am.

Come along and participate in a trial session and see how you go.
