The Faculty is organised into three schools plus a new AviationAcademy, which will have a branch campus in Dubai South from 2018.

• Computing and Mathematics• Engineering• Applied Sciences • Aviation Academy

TeachingA large proportion of our courses are professionally accredited bybodies such as the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, RoyalInstitution of Chartered Surveyors, the British Computer Society,Society of Biology, the Forensic Science Society and the Royal Societyof Chemistry. Together with our close links with highly-regardedindustry players such as British Airways, IBM, Orange, Microsoft,Costain and Stradform, this ensures that our courses reflect the latestrequirements of industry.

FacilitiesThe University has an ongoing multi-million pound investmentprogramme from which the Faculty of Computing Engineering andScience has benefited in the form of a £1.5 million AircraftMaintenance Centre including our very own commercial jet onCampus, in Treforest. This has added to our aerospace provision, following the addition of our flight simulator, gas turbine engineand wind tunnel. A 1,000 m2 extension to the centre wascompleted in September 2015. A £3m development, also atTreforest, created a new, modern Centre for Automotive & PowerSystem Engineering (CAPSE). This was completed in July 2015.CAPSE has been part-sponsored by the Welsh Government’sflagship A4B programme under the European Development Fund. The Centre is home to Wales’s only four-wheel drive ‘rolling road’,which allows experts to test next-generation vehicles by accuratelysimulating driving conditions without going out on the road. Thesedevelopments are in addition to the existing industry-standardfacilities the Faculty operates, including civil and mechanicalengineering testing labs, lighting design studios, and electronicssignal and communications labs. Forensic Science facilities includea Crime Scene Investigation House, which allows students toexperience a range of crime scene simulations from burglaries tohomicides and fatal fires.

Research

Some of the highlights of our research and engagement include:

• The Information Security Research Group, which has developed aservice for the forensic recovery and analysis of data. The University of South Wales has the only government-approved high-security computer forensics laboratory in a UK university. The laboratory carries out training and consultancy work for policeand government, and is a recognised Centre of Excellence.

• With support from the Welsh Government, we have invested in the Hydrogen Research Centre at Baglan as a platform for experimental research into the development of renewable hydrogen production systems, novel hydrogen energy-storage technologies, and wider issues in the implementation of hydrogenenergy systems. The Hydrogen Centre and its researchers has placed Wales as a world-leading centre for the development of biochemical, chemical and systems engineering for the research and delivery of sustainable hydrogen low-Carbon technologies within the UK and further afield.

• The Sustainable Environment Research Centre (SERC) is a ground-breaking research centre bringing together leaders from biology, engineering, chemistry, and physics united in a single academic team which combines their resources and skills to meet the energysecurity and environmental challenges of the new millennium. Bydissolving the boundaries between disparate academic divisions, SERC has already established itself as one of the most forward-looking institutions in Europe by achieving large grants in many key areas.

• The Centre of Excellence in Mobile and Emerging Technologies (CEMET) is leading a new revolution in mobile applications technology, researched, designed and developed here in Wales. Eligible beneficiaries from this European-funded project include small and medium-sized enterprises. The Integrated Communications Research Centre (ICRC), linked to CEMET, has an exceptional track record in collaborative research with major industries such as Orange, Panasonic and General Dynamics UK.

Research at the University of South Wales is focused on providing solutions to problems that affect society andthe economy. The Faculty contributes to this with research across all its subject areas and submitted in the REF2014 under B10 (Mathematical Sciences), B11 (Computer Science and Informatics), and B15 (GeneralEngineering).
