INTRO DUCTION U UCL Culture is a multidisciplinary team committed to connecting the world with UCL through innovative programming and engagement activities. We use our assets in the form of collections, museums, theatre and most importantly our people and know how to mobilise the UCL community, inspiring them to engage people with their research and their research with people. We amplify their work through the delivery of compelling and coherent programmes of events, public engagement activities, public art, performance, exhibitions and permanent museum displays to create cutting edge cultural experiences. We collaborate, light sparks, disrupt and provoke. We use our objects, insights and expertise to reframe questions and surface new ideas. We believe in the power of open because open minds see further. The Museums and Cultural Programming team within UCL Culture is responsible for delivering high quality experiences for academics, students and external audiences using UCL’s rich cultural resources and resources and assets. The main objective of this area is to set the standard for using culture as means of interrogating and understanding the world around us. The Museums and Cultural Programmes team is responsible for activities ranging from devising innovative object-based learning experiences for UCL students to producing research-driven events and exhibitions for public audiences to developing public art projects that enhance the public realm and local community. An emphasis will be placed on developing programmes that are topical in nature and engage staff, students and external audiences in new and interesting ways.

UCL Appointment of Head of Petrie Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology Collection

THE ROLE

Main Purpose To lead the sustainable development of Petrie Egyptian and Sudanese Archaeology collection by ensuring it is actively used in research and teaching inside and outside the university and promoting it as a source of inspiration for the broader community. The post holder works alongside the Head of Visitor Services, Head of Public Programming and Head of Collections Management to ensure the collection is intellectually and physically accessible. This is a key advocacy role and the post holder is tasked with articulating the value and potential of the collection to users within UCL and externally.

Key responsibilities and outcomes: Research and teaching services

• Lead, develop and deliver the research and teaching strategy for the collection • Develop the curatorial mission and vision for the collections in line with UCL Culture Strategy • Ensure the collection meets relevant standards required for accreditation and funding bodies, particularly

around documentation and collection development • Develop and manage processes for responding to internal and external research enquiries as well as

requests for collections-based teaching • Work with the collections management team and the curator to develop best practice for providing access

to the collection

• Manage the processes for internal and external reporting related to collections uses, including the capture of teaching data and KPIs

• Work with the UCL Culture programming and engagement teams to develop collaborative opportunities for increasing engagement with the collections by academics

• Deliver museum and collections-based teaching sessions in a responsive dialogue with stakeholders • Engage with Faculty and Departmental Teaching Committees and individual module coordinators across

the faculties

Exhibitions and public engagement

• Work with the Museums and Cultural Programmes team to develop and deliver the UCL Culture exhibitions programme

• Deliver exhibitions, including cross collections exhibitions, in collaboration with curators, researchers, students and artists

• Lead on the negotiation and management of short- and long-term loans, acquisitions and external exhibition partnerships

• Develop the interpretation strategy for the collections and oversee its implementation • Undertake evaluation of exhibitions and related programmes • Develop collaborative research impact exhibition opportunities and contribute to funding bids

Stakeholders

• Contribute to and deliver UCL Culture engagement strategy and audience development plan • Develop and maintain an excellent working relationship with the Institute of Archaeology • Develop audiences/stakeholders for the collections working with UCL Culture colleagues • Develop and manage internal and external stakeholder relationships for the benefit of the collections,

including sector wide organisations, Egyptian and Sudanese Communities, Petrie Museum Friends, members and donors interested in the collections and funding organisations

• Develop and deliver training programmes for staff and students • Build and maintain relationships with academic staff and subject specialists Represent the collections and

the department as required, internally and externally, in conferences, industry events and publications

Operations

• Manage curators, temporary staff and volunteers • Liaise with the Head of Visitor Services around public access to the collection • Work with the Director of Operations to coordinate estates planning • Manage and monitor budgets • Work with Communications and Marketing Manager to develop specialist press contacts and • promote the museum in the media • Identify and pursue funding opportunities related to the collections in accordance with the UCL Culture

fundraising strategy • Develop, oversee and implement policy and processes for image licencing and filming working with

colleagues in UCL Culture Operations • Contribute to the evaluation and dissemination of UCL Culture’s work

• Reports to: Director of Museums and Cultural Programmes • Responsible for: Curator – Collections (Egyptian Archaeology), freelance, project staff and volunteers • Working with: Colleagues across UCL Culture, particularly Head of Visitor Services, Head of Public

Programmes, and Head of Collections Management; colleagues in relevant academic and professional departments across UCL

PERSON SPECIFICATION Knowledge, Education, Qualifications and Training Essential

• A degree in a subject related to Archaeology or equivalent experience • Comprehensive working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook • A sound knowledge of relevant health and safety regulation

Desirable

• A postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as Museum Studies or equivalent Experience

Skills and/or Abilities Essential

• Excellent team working skills, and the ability to work collaboratively as both part of a multidisciplinary team and on own initiative

• Experience of developing and delivering exhibitions and related programmes • Experience of managing a range of collections covering different disciplines and subject areas • Experience of working with and handling a wide range of fragile and valuable artefacts and collections • Experience of managing the development, documentation and use of museum collections • Experience of encouraging the use of collections to advance research, teaching and learning, preferably

supported by evidence of experience in an academic environment. • Experience of fundraising and income generation • Experience of carrying out evaluations and performance reporting
