HEAD MASTER'S BULLETIN | FRIDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 2018 NEWS & NOTIFICATIONS From the Head Master During the course of this week I have had reason to reflect on the fact that life often fails to follow the script that we expect. Sometimes this happens on a relatively small scale. Our Year 9 camp at the Field Studies Centre, which started on Monday, has had to be shut down until late next week because of an outbreak of gastroenteritis. This event, which is unprecedented in the operation of the Field Studies Centre, was the consequence of a virus and was not food-related. However, the consequence of the outbreak is that the camp, which had been much anticipated by the boys as one of the great experiences of life at Trinity, has not unfolded as anyone expected. The camp will resume, but it will be truncated. Consequently, I have no doubt that there is disappointment amongst the boys who are affected and their families. Sometimes the deviation from our expectations is much more significant. During the course of this week I had cause to visit a member of our extended school community in an oncology ward. The story that is unfolding for that family is not one that they had hoped for, expected or welcomed, yet it is, nonetheless, their reality. Other examples abound. A student receives results are not as strong as he had hoped. A staff member experiences illness that frustrates his desire to be up and about. A parent has to make space in a busy week to get panel-beating done because the L-plate driver had an ‘incident’. The time set aside for one task that gets eaten up by another, the season of anticipated sporting triumph that is cut short by injury, and the list could go on and on. All these examples sit at different points along the continuum of significance, but they all present challenges to those of us who are affected. What do we do when life disappoints us? Of course, it depends. It depends on the event, it depends on our personal resources and circumstances, it depends on our habits of mind and patterns of behaviour. Sometimes we complain. Sometimes we rage. Sometimes we despair. Some of us are volatile and some of us are even-keeled. Some of us move on quickly, and others find themselves unable to do so. Some of us are disposed to forensic dissection of events to apportion responsibility or blame, while others shrug. Sitting where I do in this community, I see examples of every kind of response to disappointment. I would like to make three observations, arising from my reflections this week. The first one is to note that young people learn their responses from older people, particularly their parents. Your response to disappointment is a powerful example and formative influence for your son. You are his most powerful teachers; your influence in these years will be carried forward into the years of his adulthood, and passed on to his children in time. The second observation is that our experience of disappointment is closely tied to the strength of our expectations. The more we hold onto our expectations, the greater our disappointment when events unfold differently. It is wise to maintain a sense of proportion, so that we can weigh the real significance of any one circumstance. Not every disappointment is a catastrophe. The third observation is that we do well to maintain a sense of humility about the future. The reality is that we do not know what tomorrow will bring. Whether or not you have Christian faith, it makes good sense to think about the future as conditional; this helps us to cope with the reality of the unpredictable script of life. However, an additional blessing that accompanies Christian faith is the conviction that, even in life’s vagaries and disappointments, God’s fatherly face is turned towards us in love. We will all experience disappointment in the weeks and months ahead. This will be true both for boys and for their parents. Things will not happen as we might have hoped or expected. We will face circumstances that we did not expect. That is the reality of life. How will we respond? Uniform Shop Changes Elsewhere in this Bulletin you will read of changes in the School’s uniform shop. From the start of next term, the Uniform Shop will be outsourced and relocated to newly fitted out premises on the ground floor of the Centenary Centre. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the School, to thank our long-serving staff in the Uniform Shop. Michele De Silva and Jennifer Francis have been with us since 2008, and Judy Martin has been at Trinity in this role since 2010. We thank them for their service to our community over the years and we wish them God’s blessings in the next chapter. Tim Bowden Head Master Copyright Trinity Grammar School 2018. NEWS & NOTIFICATIONS

From the Head MasterDuring the course of this week I have had reason to reflect on the fact that life often fails to follow the script that we expect.

Sometimes this happens on a relatively small scale. Our Year 9 camp at the Field Studies Centre, which started on Monday, has had to be shut downuntil late next week because of an outbreak of gastroenteritis. This event, which is unprecedented in the operation of the Field Studies Centre, was theconsequence of a virus and was not food-related. However, the consequence of the outbreak is that the camp, which had been much anticipated by theboys as one of the great experiences of life at Trinity, has not unfolded as anyone expected. The camp will resume, but it will be truncated.Consequently, I have no doubt that there is disappointment amongst the boys who are affected and their families.

Sometimes the deviation from our expectations is much more significant. During the course of this week I had cause to visit a member of our extendedschool community in an oncology ward. The story that is unfolding for that family is not one that they had hoped for, expected or welcomed, yet it is,nonetheless, their reality.

Other examples abound. A student receives results are not as strong as he had hoped. A staff member experiences illness that frustrates his desire to beup and about. A parent has to make space in a busy week to get panel-beating done because the L-plate driver had an ‘incident’. The time set aside forone task that gets eaten up by another, the season of anticipated sporting triumph that is cut short by injury, and the list could go on and on.

All these examples sit at different points along the continuum of significance, but they all present challenges to those of us who are affected. What dowe do when life disappoints us?

Of course, it depends. It depends on the event, it depends on our personal resources and circumstances, it depends on our habits of mind and patternsof behaviour. Sometimes we complain. Sometimes we rage. Sometimes we despair. Some of us are volatile and some of us are even-keeled. Some of usmove on quickly, and others find themselves unable to do so. Some of us are disposed to forensic dissection of events to apportion responsibility orblame, while others shrug. Sitting where I do in this community, I see examples of every kind of response to disappointment.

I would like to make three observations, arising from my reflections this week. The first one is to note that young people learn their responses from olderpeople, particularly their parents. Your response to disappointment is a powerful example and formative influence for your son. You are his mostpowerful teachers; your influence in these years will be carried forward into the years of his adulthood, and passed on to his children in time.

The second observation is that our experience of disappointment is closely tied to the strength of our expectations. The more we hold onto ourexpectations, the greater our disappointment when events unfold differently. It is wise to maintain a sense of proportion, so that we can weigh the realsignificance of any one circumstance. Not every disappointment is a catastrophe.

The third observation is that we do well to maintain a sense of humility about the future. The reality is that we do not know what tomorrow will bring.Whether or not you have Christian faith, it makes good sense to think about the future as conditional; this helps us to cope with the reality of theunpredictable script of life. However, an additional blessing that accompanies Christian faith is the conviction that, even in life’s vagaries anddisappointments, God’s fatherly face is turned towards us in love.

We will all experience disappointment in the weeks and months ahead. This will be true both for boys and for their parents. Things will not happen as wemight have hoped or expected. We will face circumstances that we did not expect. That is the reality of life. How will we respond?

ACADEMIC

Academic Focus | Assessment and feedback as a catalyst for learnerdevelopment

Last Friday and Saturday I attended, along with colleagues from Trinity, the annual symposium of the Australian Curriculum Studies Association (ACSA).The focus this year was on assessment and feedback as a catalyst for learner and development. Amongst an outstanding series of speakers, provocations and evidence based directions, a few ideas stood out to me.

First, Trinity is well placed in articulating that the main purpose of assessment is to identify where students are in their learning so we can show theirgrowth and achievement and design future learning. One of the key themes of the conference, however, was the importance of student involvement inassessment: ensuring they understand the criteria upon which they will be assessed, can self-assess and can set personal assessment goals. In this wayassessment drives future learning rather than only measuring past learning.

Second, the most important question in any classroom is about the quality of student thinking. Assessing the clarity, precision, relevance and breadth ofstudent thinking is our prime task. From this perspective rigour is about the complexity and range of thinking processes with which students engage.Mastering content is imperative … because it empowers students to think in creative and critical ways.

Third, assessment and feedback is deeply personal. When boys can focus upon their own emerging strengths, without worrying about comparison toothers, assessment is about opportunity. Research presented at the conference highlighted the most effective feedback to students as dialogue – a backand forth conversation focussed upon specific individual targets.

As Trinity scrutinises its own assessment practices, our goal remains as it always has: rigorous and growth focussed education empowering academicsuccess for all learners. It is exciting to join with national and international efforts to improve outcomes for all students, sharing our own emergingpractices with others, and in turn learning from them.

News from the Arthur Holt LibraryPOWERFUL RECOMMENDATIONS

This week we have had a very special display curated by none other than our graduating student leadership team. We asked the prefects which booksthey would recommend to the rest of the school community, and they came up with excellent suggestions!

Research shows that peer-recommendations play a significant role in guiding reading behaviours in teenagers. Who better to get recommendationsfrom than our student leaders who have had no less than six years to explore the collection, whose taste in reading is cultivated, and who have alreadysecured the admiration and respect of younger students?

We encourage students and teachers to pop by the library and see what our senior leaders love to read!

THE MOVIE SOCIETY

Dive deep into 80’s and 90’s classics on the Blog

The Movie Society is a newly founded Co-Curricular. We are always thrilled to feature student writing on the AHL blog and right now the site is teemingwith movie reviews that focus on late Twentieth Century nostalgia.

Use the reviews to plan a family movie-night, or relive your youth by reading how our students have responded to the slumber-party and rainy-dayfavourites of yesteryear.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 12 canvoluntarily attend by collecting a permission note from the Sportmaster’s office and returning the signed permission slip to thestudent services office by Wednesday 19th September.

The Championships will finish at approximately 8.15pm. The buses will be leaving as soon as possible thereafter and will return all students back to theSummer Hill Campus.

Any student wishing to be picked up by his parents from SOPAC after the Championships must supply a note to Student Services byWednesday 19th September notifying the School of these arrangements. Students not returning to Trinity must be collected by their Parentsor Guardian as students are NOT to use public transport to make their way home.

Parents who collect their sons from SOPAC will have to park in one of the car parks while waiting for their sons to leave the Centre in the evening, asthere will not be any room for cars to park outside the Athletics Centre.

Parents will not be able to collect their sons before the end of the CAS Track and Field Championships as it is grossly discourteous for boys to leavebefore the end of the meeting. All boys should support their School Track and Field Team right to the very end.

Boys must wear their winter uniform including coats to the Championships. Boys should also be ready to be actively involved in cheering, thussupporting our Athletes. All iPods, iPads, computers, MP3s, tennis balls, reading material, etc. will be confiscated. Boys may take their mobile phonesbut must ensure they are switched off during the Championships. The phones may be kept in the student’s pocket.

Boys will be able to purchase food and drink at the Centre. However, it would be an advantage to bring food and drink, as the lines atthe kiosk can be very long. No school bags should be taken to the Championships and definitely no glass bottles.

If there is a legitimate reason for your son not to attend the Championships, parents are encouraged to write a letter to the Master ofthe Middle School (Year 9) or Master of the Senior School (Years 10 and 11) requesting permission. Boys in Years 9 to 11 who areunable to attend the Championships will be expected to attend and give support to an alternate non-compulsory School event at alater date.

Debating NewsThe last two rounds of CAS Debating saw Trinity debaters up against formidable teams from two of the competition’s strongest performing schools: StAloysius' College and Barker College. Trinity won five of its eleven debates against St Aloysius', with both of our Year 7 teams recording victories.Unfortunately, the evening also marked the first (and only) loss for our very strong IIIs team. The following week, Trinity had one of its toughest eveningson record as Barker, in a formidable showing, won all debates with the exception of the IIIs.

Overall, Trinity had a mixed CAS debating season, although there were some clear highlights. Both our IIIs and IVs won four out of five debates, and theYear 8Bs also recorded a solid showing, winning three out of five debates. One of the most impressive achievements of the season was the selection ofAlexander Maloof (12Hi) in the CAS Representative Debating team. This team is comprised of the strongest debaters from CAS schools, soAlexander’s selection is truly something to be recognised and celebrated.

We would like to thank our dedicated coaches for their dedication and support throughout the season, and look forward to the next season with renewedvigour and the desire to record even stronger results.

Australian Jobs 2018

Australian Jobs is one of the country’s foremost jobs publications. It provides an easy-to-read overview of industry and occupation trends in the labourmarket, and is designed to meet the needs of students, career advisers, people looking for work and those involved in the national employment service, jobactive.

This year’s edition has identified four key trends:

Labour market conditions are strong — employment is up by a robust 403,300 over the year to January 2018.Young people are benefiting from the strong labour market conditions — industries with large numbers of young workers include Retail Trade(around 386,000), Accommodation and Food Services (385,000) and Construction (175,000).Australia’s industry structure is changing — today, more than three in every four Australian workers are employed in a serviceindustry, with much of the growth driven by Health Care and Social Assistance. There are now more jobs for higher skilled workers — the majority of employment growth over the past five years has been in occupationsthat generally require post-school qualifications, and this trend is likely to continue.
