THE POSITION OF HEAD MASTER OF

TRINITY GRAMMAR SCHOOL

THE SCHOOL

Trinity Grammar School is an Anglican school governed by a Council pursuant to an Ordinance of the Diocese of Sydney. The Archbishop of Sydney is the Council’s President.

The School is one of the original members of the Combined Associated Schools in New South Wales. The other members in the Association are Barker College, Cranbrook School, Knox Grammar School, St Aloysius’ College and Waverley College. The Head Master is a member of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (A.H.I.S.A.) and of the Head Masters’ Conference (U.K.).

The Right Reverend G.A. Chambers, O.B.E., D.D., subsequently Bishop of Central Tanganyika, founded the School in 1913 at Dulwich Hill, of which Parish – the Parish of Holy Trinity – he was then Rector.

The school at Summer Hill, set on eight hectares of land, was purchased in 1926 and a property at Strathfield shortly afterwards. The School consists of several separate but closely-linked establishments. A Senior and Middle School (Years 7 to 12), for day and boarding students and

the Junior School (K to Year 6) are located at the Summer Hill Campus. The Preparatory School (Pre-K to Year 6) is located at the Strathfield Campus, on The Boulevarde. The Field Studies Centre is located at Huskisson, 20 minutes south-east from Nowra.

Day boys are received from the age of four years (Pre-K) and Boarders from Year 10.

Enrolment is comprehensive and present enrolment is in excess of 2,150 students. The School employs 293 teaching staff along with 150 administrative and other non-teaching support staff.

THE SCHOOL COUNCIL

The Council operates under an Ordinance of the Synod of the Diocese of Sydney and is empowered to carry on the School. It is comprised of 17 persons. Of these, six clergy and six lay nominees are elected by the Synod of the Diocese. Three members are elected by the Old Trinitarians Union and two by the Council itself. The Archbishop of Sydney is ex officio its President, but regular meetings are under the control of the Chairman of Council. The Head Master is not a member of the Council.

The Council is committed to maintaining an Anglican tradition and to upholding the teaching of the Anglican Church of Australia.

The Council functions with the following standing committees and all members participate in one or more of them:

Audit Committee | Reviews the School’s financial information, systems and processes to manage significant financial risk, integrity and quality of financial statements, disclosures, auditing, accounting and financial reporting processes.

Building and Grounds Committee | Overseas the plant and buildings and the annual maintenance programme.

Education Committee | Investigates matters of educational policy referred to it by the Council.

Executive Committee | Conducts the business of the Council between meetings and generally overseas the payment of authorised expenditure.

Finance Committee | Supervises the preparation of the annual budget and ten-year planning documents, investigates the financial feasibility of aspects of the Master Plan and all Council projects.

Industrial and WH&S Committee | Informs the Council on policy considerations which arise in industrial matters.

Governance Committee | Deals with matters relating to Council governance referred to it from time to time and reports on those matters to the Council through the Executive Committee. It also oversees the implementation of the risk management framework and strategic direction on the management of material business risk.

Other commitees are formed and meet on an ad hoc basis as necessary.

THE ROLE OF THE HEAD MASTER

As Chief Executive of the School, the Head Master is, in general terms, responsible for implementation of the Council’s policies, and for making recommendations for the development and overall management of the School on each campus. He attends all Council and sub-committee meetings and chairs weekly meetings with his Staff Executive. It is expected that the energies of the new Head Master will be directed to the continuation of a cheerful climate and that an atmosphere of hope will continue to be generated. As a result, the Head’s duties include:

1. As its principal education adviser, keeping the Council acquainted with current issues of educational thought and practice.

2. As the sole formal channel of communication from staff to the Council (with the exception of the Bursar in relation to finance and property), bringing all matters to the Council necessary for the efficient shaping of policy and furnishing those reports which the Council may require.

3. The enrolment, welfare, conduct and dismissal of students.

4. The appointment, care, professional development and dismissal of staff. The selection of Bursar, Deputy Head Master, Senior Master and the Chaplain must be agreed upon between the Chairman of Council and the Head, who will make the formal appointment.

5. Ensuring that Trinity Grammar School continues to provide a lead in educational policy and practice.

6. The School’s relations with the media.

7. The support of all other bodies within the Trinity family, including fundraisers and donors to the School.

8. Participation in the relevant professional bodies and in the wider field of education.
