Harris is head honcho of family’s businessBY LORYLL NICOLAISENGOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

Kathleen Harris isstrong like steel.

As president of HarrisIndustrial Gases, thereare a lot of ways she hasto exercise that strength.

“Over the years, I’vehad to fight to have amale customer willing tospeak with me on thephone — they allassumed all I did wasbookkeeping,” Harrissaid. “I had to learn thecylinder business fromthe ground up to be ableto work the sales counterand help customers.”

Harris has been prov-ing and improving herselffor the more than 30years she’s been workingfor the family businessstarted by her grandfa-ther, Harold Harris, in1936.

“I’m the oldest employ-ee here, and I’ve beenhere longer than anyoneelse, and no employeedoes anything here that Ihaven’t done myself, soI’m proud of that,” shesaid. “When I startedworking here full time in1978, I wore overalls andsteel-toed boots. I rolledcylinders, drove a deliverytruck, cleaned the bath-rooms — I still do that, cut steel, and washed thewindows. The managerwho worked for my daddidn’t want to have anyfamily employees work-ing there, so he tried todiscourage me. Obviouslythat didn’t work.”

Harris’ dedication, onand off the clock, to herbusiness and communityat large are what helpedher be chosen as thisyear’s Women in BusinessWoman of the Year.

“Kathleen Harris exem-

plifies the successfulwoman in businesstoday,” said Auburn Jour-nal Publisher Tony Hazar-ian. “She runs one ofAuburn’s most enduringand innovative compa-nies, she’s fiercely loyalabout Auburn and shesupports communityevents and concernsthrough her business.”

Kent Harris, Kathleen’sfather, bought the busi-ness from Harold Harrisin 1954. When Kent Harrisdied in 1974, the compa-ny went to his wife andKathleen’s mother, NormaHarris, who later split thebusiness among her four

children. “Of the four kids, I’m

the only one who cameback to the family busi-ness,” Kathleen Harrissaid.

The company hasgrown from a two-manwelding shop to one ofthe area’s largest inde-pendent providers ofindustrial gases and weld-ing supplies.

Harris, a Colfax HighSchool alumna, didn’talways plan on staying inthe foothills. She lived inthe Bay Area for about fiveyears, working in criminaljustice, before four deter-rents — crime, anonymi-

ty, smog and traffic —made Harris head backup the hill.

“The town I couldn’twait to get out of becamethe town I couldn’t wait toget back to,” she said. “Itfelt right because I wasvery close to my dad and Icouldn’t imagine selling.”

Harris gets a kick out ofinteracting with cus-tomers. She said it’s fairlycommon for someone tocome in and ask if anyonefrom the Harris family stillworks for the company.

“The employees pointto me, and a conversationensues, with the cus-tomer telling me they

remember my father ormy grandfather, and howwell they were treatedback then,” she said. “It’smy job to make surethey’re still treated thatwell today. Our competi-tors can always cutprices, but they can nevermatch our personal cus-tomer service.”

The family business isjust one way Harris keepsstrong connections withthe community.

“I’m one of those peo-ple who doesn’t just com-plain without havingsome kind of idea how towork on a problem, sothat’s basically how I’vegotten involved in thecommunity,” she said.

Here’s just a samplingof Harris’ current andpast community connec-tions — she’s a longtimemember of the Soropti-mist International ofAuburn, an Auburn 49erLion, was the first femalepresident of the NorthFork Lions Club, an activemember of the AuburnArea Chamber Chamberof Commerce, served fiveyears on the Placer SPCAexecutive board, and cur-rently serves on the boardfor Save Auburn RavineSalmon & Steelhead.

“I have these little Post-it notes that say, ‘Stop mebefore I volunteer again,’”she said. “I try to givethem out, but it doesn’twork.”

One of Harris’ proudestcontributions to Auburncomes in the form of theAshley Memorial DogPark, which she and Lau-ra Pinnick founded inmemory of her daughter,Ashley Harris Haupt, whopassed away in 2003.

“That project was diffi-cult and controversial andtook four years to com-plete, but now we havethis little slice of heavenfor our best friends,” Har-ris said.

Harris has overhauledher life in the wake ofAshley’s passing.

“Losing her made mereinvent myself and mylife, and every situation Iencounter, I try to find thepositive,” she said.

It’s not always easy, butit’s an exercise in strength,Harris said.

When asked whatadvice she has for womeninterested in a similarcareer path, Harris saiddetermination is key.

“You’ll have to worktwice as hard to get recog-nized in this traditionallymale-dominated indus-try,” she said. “However, once you’ve proved youhave the technical knowl-edge, you can concen-trate on moving forward.”

When not on the job —“I’m working almost twiceas many hours as I didbefore the economyturned upside down,” shesaid — Harris enjoysspending time hikingwith her boyfriend MarkMiller and her dogs.

“I absolutely love tohike — it’s very therapeu-tic,” she said. “My fatheralways preferred to beaway from the crowds, enjoying what nature pro-vides instead, and I got alot of that from him.”

BY GLORIA YOUNGGOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

If Cindy Edwards hasone message for herclients, it is “be pre-pared.”

For two decades as anadvance-planning spe-cialist for funerals, she’sdealt with families ingood times and intragedy. For the past yearand a half, she’s been withChapel of the Hills inAuburn.

“I think educating fam-ilies in the benefits ofdoing pre-planning ifthey have not gonethrough a death in thefamily is the biggest chal-lenge,” she said. “Some-times they don’t under-stand how much theirfamily would benefitfrom having these pre-arrangements done. For alot of families I work with,it’s after a death occursthat they understandthose benefits.”

Edwards, 46, got intothe funeral business byaccident.

“I was working forcruise-only travel agencythat was going out ofbusiness,” she said. “Ikept seeing an ad in thepaper that said, “Me sellfor a cemetery?”

The job noticeintrigued her.

“I thought I’d check itout just to practice myinterview skills,” she said.“And here I am 21 yearslater.”

These days, Edwardssees a growing interest inpre-planning.

“Especially now thatthe economy is morechallenging, people don’twant to put their familiesthrough the financial bur-den of having to pay forthe funeral or cremation

when a death occurs,” shesaid.

Her favorite part of thejob is meeting people.

“Especially if we’redoing pre-arrangementswhen no one has an ill-ness and everyone ishealthy,” she said. “Wecan be a littler sillier and(be more relaxed) with itthan when someone hasto come in and do

arrangements whenthey’re sick. We get tolaugh a little more. Whena family says to me, ‘youmade this so much easi-er,’ that is the best com-pliment I can get.”

Along the way, therehave been a number of“proudest” moments.

“I think being namedthe top family servicecounselor in Northern

California for three yearsin a row (has to be at thetop of the list),” she said.

Although it is an unusu-al profession, Edwardssees it as good careerchoice for women, whotend to be moreapproachable and empa-thetic, she said.

When she’s not work-ing, Edwards enjoysspending time at homewith her husband. Theyhave no children — “justthe four-legged kind,” shesaid.

“I love just hanging outat home and being with

my husband and my ani-mals,” she said. “I enjoysimple things like going tothe movies. I enjoy cook-ing and I do a lot of read-ing. I like a lot of theinspirational books andself-help books.”

And her secret to main-taining her passion andcommitment to the job?

“I think after being inthis business so long, Irecognize when I need togive myself a break andwhen I need to pushmyself. That really helps alot so I don’t get burnedout.”

Edwards grew up in theBay Area and then lived inPlacerville prior to mov-ing to Colfax five yearsago. She worked for manyyears in Sacramento priorto taking the job inAuburn.

“I love not having acommute,” she said aboutworking in Auburn. “I alsolove being in my localcommunity and helpingfamilies I see in the gro-cery store, people I seedowntown — getting toknow them better fromliving in the same com-munity where I work.”

Several years ago, I was struggling with my weight and with finding a balance between taking care of my family and taking care of myself.

A friend invited me to a start taking group fitness classes with her at a local gym. Not only did I make new friends but I lost weight

and I learned to make myself and my health a priority. This also made me better able to take care of my family. It was a win-win. Studio Z Dance & Fitness has been operating successfully in the Colfax area for almost two years.

With the closing of Auburn Nissan in April 2008, I was left unemployed for the first time in my life. I had a solid job offer from my previous employer, Future Nissan, but it had always been a dream of mine to open my own shop. The safe choice was to take the old job back but Becki knew that this would not satisfy me. With her encouragement we made the choice to open Autovantage Service Center here in Auburn. Becki immediately took the ball and began running with it and at times dragging me along. She spear headed the entire project that would become Autovantage - from finding the location to setting up the financing we needed and everything else in between. All the while balancing her other jobs as a Human Resource Manager and mother to our three children. From the moment we opened, Becki joined the Auburn Chamber of Commerce and is now an Ambassador for the Chamber. She is also part of the Auburn Leadership Class of 2010. I am excited that she is now here with us full time while still juggling our children. To see her with our customers is amazing because you can see that she truly does care about each person that walks through our doors. If you have met her you know what I am talking about and if you haven’t met her I believe you’re missing out. Being an automotive technician all my adult life and trying on the new hats of owner and manager has been a challenge and scary at times. What Becki has brought to the table has calmed my nerves and brought solutions to things I have no clue about. My wife is the glue that bonds the whole puzzle of what I call my life. I can whole heartedly say that there is no way that Autovanatge Service Center would be where it is or even in existence without the efforts of my beautiful wife. I just want to acknowledge the amazing businesswoman that my wife is. Thanks honey for all of your support!

Why are both of these women in the Automotive Business? Both of these women hold positions usually filled by men in the past years. Dianne & Stacy are

doing an incredible job and showing other women that they too can learn!

Dianne Bingen - Administrative Assistant Dianne has been an employee of mine for 6 1/2 years now. Initially she was hired as a phone receptionist and filing person. I quickly recognized her desire to learn more about my business. At Master Technicians, Inc., it is an asset to be able to wear more than one hat and she can wear many at once. Her computer and organizational skills have definitely allowed her to excell to where she is today. She is a very appreciated asset to my business and has built a great relationship with our customer base. Sincerely,

Jimmy Mullenix, President/CEO

Stacy Pedersen - Service Manager/Managing Partner Stacy has been an employee for 14 years. Like Dianne, Stacy was hired as a receptionist. After less than a year, Stacy began her rise to where she is today. Her insatiable desire to not only understand the way I ran my business, but the approach I took to maintenance and repair was a challenge at first to satisfy. I began giving her training tools and literature to answer her questions. Her ability to understand the mechanical functions of vehicles is a quality she has mastered. She is even ASE Certified. Her ability to communicate with a great deal of clarity and knowledge to our customers is incredible. Sincerely,

Jimmy Mullenix, President/CEO

1936, the Harris Company specializes in Industrial, Medical, and Specialty Gases, Cryogenic Liquids, and Welding Equipment and

traditionally male-dominated industry, Norma Marani Harris and Kathleen Harris have seen the business not only succeed, but thrive,

S OME FACTS ABOUT E-Z W AY : ★ All our instructors have completed a comprehensive training program, underwent

extensive background investigations, and passed the state’s licensing requirements. ★ We employ long-term instructors (vs. independent contractors) who have collective

experience in the education, military, law enforcement and business fields. ★ We own our cars, and they are regularly serviced and professionally maintained. ★ Services to assist senior drivers also offered! ★ Classroom Driver Education can be completed in just 4 days!

E-Z Way Driving School was founded in 1984 by Laurine Johnson and her husband J.B. They relocated to Auburn over 20 years ago, in 1989. When Mr. Johnson passed away in 2002, Laurine continued to run the business they opened together. A retired school teacher and active member of the community, Laurine is also very proactive in the business, serving as the Driving School Association of Califor nia’s North Vice-President. The association, whose member schools must be voted in, ensures that their driving schools are held to the highest standards. Being a family-owned business, Laurine’s daughter Shelley Collins is the Operator of E-Z Way, as well as the Treasurer of the Driving School Associati on of California. Our school currently employs eleven instructors, five of whom are women. Our office staff is always friendly and helpful in assisting you as you and your student begin the Driver Educa tion and Training process.

The foundation of our program here at E-Z Way is to advocate that teens take their Driver’s Educatio n in a classroom rather than online, in an effort to produce safer drivers on the road. Let us tell yo u about the benefits of Classroom Driver Education versus Online!

She and her husband,Mark, have been marriedfor 25 years. They havetwo daughters, Sydney,19, Taylor, 18, and a son,Skyler, 15.

Leftridge said her job isnot routine in nature.

“I think the best way todescribe it is to say thereis no typical (day),because we are dealingwith a people job, younever know what’s goingto happen,” she said.“That is part of whatmakes it exciting. It’s justproblem solving differentthings. Sometimes it‘sworking as a counselorbetween two studentswho are almost at blows.Sometimes it’s schedul-ing, scheduling is huge

thing. It’s just very varied. It’s a lot of fun though, alot of fun. The kids have aton of energy, so it’s justcontagious.”

Leftridge said herbiggest challenge is mak-

ing sure she doesn’t worktoo many hours.

“This is a job you canbury yourself in,” shesaid. “The biggest chal-lenge is to say, ‘OK, it’sbeen a 12-hour day, and I

know I could do morethings, but I think enoughhas been done.”

The biggest reward isthe success of her stu-dents, Leftridge said.

Her proudest profes-

sional moment camewhen the youngest ofthree children of a familywho was struggling athome graduated fromhigh school.

“That one was such astruggle, and there was somuch working againstthat child succeeding,”Leftridge said. “We didn’teven know if he was goingto make it out of eighthgrade.”

In her free time Left-

ridge enjoys playingmusic with her husband. Her primary instrumentis the piano. They playvarious gigs and alwaysplay with the Sierra Com-munity Chorus at itsannual holiday concert.

Leftridge said heradvice for women inter-ested in working in herfield is to keep workingtoward your goal, gainexperience and never letanyone tell you no.

1. What are your biggestchallenges and successes?

My biggest challengewas getting open. I didn’treally have enough mon-ey and half way throughmy equipment loan fellthrough due to the econ-omy. I really wasn’t surehow I was going to makeit happen. I was lucky withsome great local business-es who took a chance onme and arranged pay-ment plans and I waseventually able to getcredit for the rest. I cried alot during that time but itwas worth it. Every time Idrive by and see all thepeople out in CentralSquare enjoying them-selves, it makes me feelgreat to have contributedto that. That is success tome.

2. What advice wouldyou give to women inter-ested in your field?

Anyone interested instarting a business I thinkneeds to be passionateabout it. Get involved inyour community, lovewhat you doing andwhere you are. Thingshappen for a reason, howand when they are sup-posed to, keep workinghard, believe in yourself

and in your dreams evenwhen others don’t.

3. How do you balancecareer and family?

That one has been atough one, especially inmy first year. There werecountless 12- to 16-hourdays, seven days a weekin the beginning when Icouldn’t afford muchhelp. I am hoping to workmore on time for myselfand my family in the com-ing year.

4. What is your favoritepart of your job?

I really enjoy seeing allthe people enjoyingthemselves when thecome here, working with

my mom and my greatstaff and just being down-town with all of my greatbusiness neighbors andfriends.

5. What do you do forfun?

Well, not a lot of per-sonal fun lately — I alsohope to work on that in

the coming year. I do real-ly enjoy being downtownfor all the events like theArt Walk when there is aband and so many people

are out. Other than that, getting out for dinner anda Placer High footballgame tops the list rightnow.

BY ANDREW DILUCCIAGOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

In Betty Martin’s 19 years inthe automotive repair businessshe’s heard it all.

“I had a woman that used tocall me John’s secretary,” saidMartin, who co-owns StrictlyToy-ondas with her husband,John Martin.

But during her nearly twodecades in the world of autorepair, dealing mostly withHondas and Toyotas, Betty Mar-tin has seen a shift in attitudestoward women working in anindustry dominated by men.

“I’ve seen a lot of changes —even a lot of changes in cars,”she said in the front office of herAuburn shop. “I’ve seen moreacceptance by people (forwomen in the auto industry).”

The Martins have backed upthat trend by bringing TonyaSweat on as a service adviser.Sweat also brings a lengthyautomotive background to theoffice and has taken over manyof the duties Martin has man-aged — from service writingand setting car appointments toprocessing billing and helpingwith the books.

Throughout her professionallife Betty Martin’s customershave gotten to know her andher husband. And that familiar-ity, along with quality work, hasbuilt a trust and brought cus-tomers back, year after year.

“Our customers are morethan just a customer,” BettyMartin said. “And I like that. Inever want to have to hidewhen I go to the grocery store.”

The 50-year-old mother oftwo and grandmother has start-ed to take a reduced role at Toy-ondas, but it’s been a well-earned reduction. Along withrunning the front office, BettyMartin is a veteran of auto rac-ing, too. Her husband, John, hasbeen a passionate car builderfor decades, and almost everyweekend until recently, theMartins were somewhere rac-

ing — a passion that has beenpassed on to their son ThomasMartin, who’s been racing forseveral years.

Being a mother of two Martinalso knows what it’s like to raisea family and work in a businessthat stays open from the earlymorning into the evening.

“It’s hard, yes. The kids put upwith a lot,” Betty Martin said.“Café D was one of our favoritehangouts. Lunch was the onlytime of day that John and Iknew we could see each other.”

That understanding of whatit takes has benefited Sweat, who has found support in Mar-tin when it comes to having acareer, and taking care of herson, who has Type 1 diabetes.

“Betty’s been easy to work for.My son was diagnosed (withdiabetes) my third day (at Toy-ondas),” Sweat said. “Betty wasreally supportive … she’s beenthere, she’s had kids. “

For the women of Toy-ondas,taking care of customers andhelping them in what can be adire time for some, is a reward-ing part of the job.

“We’ve had people comingthrough (town) with theirgrandkids and the techs havestayed extra to replace a timingbelt,” Betty Martin said.“There’s been some crying inthis place, and not just women.Their cars are their lives, andwhen they don’t have them, they’re stranded.”

For young women who thinka career in the auto world issomething they want, BettyMartin has a bit of advice — getyour hands dirty.

“Start with auto shop inschool. Also, take a weldingcourse, different types ofhands-on programs,” BettyMartin said. “ROP programs arevery good.”

As for Betty Martin, withSweat on board, she’s gettingher hands dirty another way.

“I’m liking my backyard a lot, lately,” she said.

LaBarre, who has nevermarried, said she consid-ers the clinic her family.

“It’s been a wonderfuljourney,” she said. “It gaveme independence andthe chance to be of use tothe community. It’s reallyenjoyable to me.”

While the clinicremains a big part ofLaBarre’s life, she alsofinds time for her ownanimals, a miniature Aus-tralian shepherd, a lahsaapso named Dali Lahsaand an Arabian horsenamed Katie.

Katie has proved to be afun diversion from therigors of the animal med-ical world.

“It’s a second childhood

for me because I rode as achild,” LaBarre said. “Nowit’s mostly trail riding.”

LaBarre said herfavorite part of the jobcontinues to be the dailydiscoveries as she works.

“You learn a little moreabout the medicine eachday — what can go wrongand how to assist to helpan animal regain itshealth,” she said. “It’s amatter of learning how tolisten to pets. They can’tput it into words but theyare trying to communi-cate and they’re muchmore intelligent than wegive them credit for.”

Over the past years,LaBarre has been votedby the public the AuburnJournal Best of the Bestveterinarian and Com-panion has been voted

Sadler built her collec-tion over the years bybuying costumes fromantique stores and cos-tume shops, as well asmaking her own. Sheacquired so many cos-tumes, wigs, hats, shoesand accessories that shemoved her store fromtheir original 2,400-square-foot building totheir current 6,000-square -foot location inDowntown Auburn.

“We’ve got zillions ofcostumes,” Sadler said.“We’re one of the largestcostume shops in thecountry.”

Melinda Stuart, aseamstress at The MadHatters, said Sadler is awonderful person to

work with.“She’s fabulous. She’s a

Sadler said being anexpert on costumescame naturally to her.

“I thought everyoneknew what Carol and Iknew about costumes,”Sadler said. “We were justgood at history and weboth knew what peoplewore.”

Although Sadler saidrunning her own busi-ness is hard work, shestill enjoys helping peo-ple find the perfect cos-tume.

Margareta Swann lovesjewelry.

She loves putting it allin the display case whenshe opens her shop in themorning — right after shefeeds the cat, that is.

“I marvel at the gem-stones God has created,”said Swann, owner ofGolden Swann Jewelerson Lincoln Way. “I am sograteful to be surroundedby all of these pretty cre-ations.”

Swann moved to theUnited States fromGrossostheim, Germanyin 1968.

She hunted roughturquoise for a friendwho sold jewelry.

“My mother lovedturquoise,” she said.

She found out about aturquoise mine in Neva-da. Her first time thereshe couldn’t get over thebeauty of the stone as shewatched them work withit. The owners becamelike second parents to herhere in the U.S.

Swann and her hus-band Ben Asgharzadehstarted the GoldenSwann’s retail business 30years ago.

Their shop has becomelike a second home formany.

“Our store is our livingroom for friends andclients. We’ll laugh withyou, cry with you, partywith you. And we alwaysserve lunch on Saturday,”Swann said.

In her spare time,Swann is a member of the49er Lions, serves on theSutter Faith Hospital

Board and the DowntownBusiness Association, helps out with the RidingHigh Equestrian Programand is active in her

church, Auburn GraceCommunity.

She loves to knit — shejust finished four scarvesfor her granddaughters —

and garden with her hus-band.

“Ben and I are together24/7,” Swann said, whenasked how she balances

her work and family life.“We’re still alive. You cansay we’ve found balance— I haven’t killed him andhe hasn’t killed me.”

Like many businessesthese days, the shopstruggles with the econo-my, and Swann feels over-taxed, over regulated and“legally robbed by ourgovernment.”

But in the end, the hap-py customers make it all

worthwhile.“So many people enjoy

what we carry. I’m justhappy to see people walkout of here with a smile,”Swann said.

Her advice to womenwho may be consideringthe retail jewelry businessis quite simple.

“Be honest andstraightforward, and youwill succeed,” Swannadvises.

Meet Betty Windsor. She has graced the editorial department of the Auburn Journal for forty one years. As a typesetter, she has seen the paper grow from one publication day a week in 1969 to

the current daily publication. Betty loves what she does here at the Journal and finds that “learnin g as I type” is one of her greatest joys. Betty has a daughter Janet and three fabulous grandsons: Darrin, Skyler and Travis. She is involved in her church, including the choir, and loves to attend Auburn Symphony performances. Betty brings grace to this newspaper every day, endeared by her love for Auburn. “Please thank all our advertisers and faithful readers, because without them, there would be no Auburn Journal,” she says.

Thank you, Betty for all your wonderful years of service and dedication!

Meet Marilyn Leveskis. A graphic artist for the Auburn Journal for 34 years, she makes every day fun! Working closely with her department, Marilyn loves engaging with her co-workers and the advertising representatives as well as the fast pace of a daily newspaper. While she looks forward to someday visiting her Italian family in Sicily, right now she spends time with her husband of 34 years, Bob, their grown children and 4-year old grand daughter, Breezy.

Marilyn loves to spend time riding the motorcycle with Bob, watching Breezy play soccer, dancing and swimming. She is also a cat lover….. a total cat lover. Although it is hard to find time to be involved more in the community, Marilyn likes to study “nature based” religion and loves the spiritual aspects it brings. She truly enjoys Halloween, also known as Samhain, and all the spirituality surrounding this holiday. Her motto: “Live life to your fullest and don’t judge anyone, even if they talk to trees!”

Meet Nancy Neathery. She moved to this area in 1988 from Palo Alto where she had worked as a graphic artist/tech illustrator for many years. She was fortunate to land a graphics position at the Auburn Journal and has experienced many dramatic changes over the years, from cutting and pasting to using the computer.

In her spare time, she loves to scrapbook in the old-fashioned way. Hiking the area’s beautiful trai ls and gardening are some of her other interests. As a result, she has learned much about drought-

tolerant and deer-resistant plants. Nancy enjoys sitting on the deck with hubby Truett and her two orange cats while watching the foothill wildlife go by her Applegate home!

BY ANNE PAPINEAU GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

It’s seldom stated in businessmanuals but friendship canplay a vital role in career build-ing.

Patty Bailey knew she had afriend in the ceramics businesswhen she was asked to joinAuburn’s N2 Pottery when itlaunched eight years ago. She’dattended Bella Vista HighSchool in Orangevale with thewife of N2 owner ShannonRogers, and they’d remainedfriends. Rogers asked her tomanage the family business, and she’s blossomed in the role.

N2 serves the region’s ceram-ics and pottery community, andaccording to Bailey, it’s a largeone. There are students andhobbyists who purchase theirfirst clay and tools at N2, andthere are professionals who usethis local resource for rawmaterials and the hardware ofclay artistry: kilns, wheels, glazes, slab rollers and more.

Bailey’s background draws onher business wisdom.

“I started at LumberjacksBuilding Materials in Sacra-mento at age 19, and workedthere about 25 years. I wasworking on the wholesale sideof things when Shannonapproached me,” she said. “I’vealso taken a few courses in retailmanagement at American Riv-er College.”

No business has beenuntouched by the currentlyclouded economy, but Baileyhas risen to the challenge.

“We are a small entity,” shesaid. “Sometimes the biggerpeople in the Bay Area are ourcompetition. Our challenge isbeing able to get people thingsat a good price and on time. Itry a lot of personal attention. The other thing we do, becausewe don’t have the overheadsome have, is we just don’tmake as much profit as they dosometimes. And we’re really

supported well by the locals.”N2 Pottery supplies all the

clay used at Sierra College aswell as for many local highschools and intermediateschools.

Bailey’s typical day is a cre-ative mix of accepting claydeliveries, designing windowdisplays, ordering ads, oversee-ing the budget and placingorders. Her background is notprecisely artistic, but she hasexperience in making slip-castceramics. And like herself, N2 isalways widening its horizons.

“We’re just now starting somebisque painting classes; wehaven’t done that in the past,”she said.

Over the decades Bailey hasrefined her customer serviceapproach.

“I like to deal with customersand make people happy. In oth-er retail establishments if youhave bosses or corporationsover you, you’re not necessari-ly free to do what you want todo,” she observed.

Bailey resides in East Sacra-mento with her husband, whois disabled. He helps her in thestore and is invaluable in help-ing their granddaughter,Shyann, who’s deeply involvedin activities at her school, Townand County Lutheran.

“He frees me up a lot,” Baileysaid.

Bailey has introducedShyann to crafty projects. Whennot working, she and her hus-band enjoy having family overto the house, as their childrenlive conveniently close by.

“We have a pool at the house, and we like to swim. I’m takingballroom dance lessons,” shesaid.

Still, Bailey remains a dedi-cated customer service natural.

“The proudest moment Ihave is when someone says tome, ‘I’m coming back becauseyou’ve been so helpful,’” shesaid.
