With the No. 9 ranking on Sept. 22, the previous time KU was ranked in the top 10 of the coaches’ poll was Week 9 of the 2014 season when the Jayhawks checked in at No. 9. KU has been ranked in the coaches’ poll top 10 a total of 11 times since the poll started in 1996.

IN THE BIG 12Kansas is the only undefeated team in the Big 12 at 3-0-0 and the Jayhawks are tied for second in the standings, with West Virginia, with nine points, one behind league leader Oklahoma State who has 10 through four games. KU is tied for first with TCU in goals allowed as both teams have yet to be scored on with three shutouts.

Individually, junior goalkeeper Sarah Peters is tied for first in the conference in save percentage at 1.000, along with TCU’s Emily Alvarado. Peters’ 4.0 saves per game average is sixth in the Big 12.

JAYHAWKS EARN NATIONAL, BIG 12 WEEKLY HONORSThe first two games of the season were rewarding for the Kansas soccer team.

Following a clutch, game-winning performance in the 2020 season-opener at Texas on Sept. 11 a trio of Jayhawks earned national and conference weekly awards Sept. 15. Senior midfielder Ceri Holland was tabbed as the TopDrawerSoccer National Player of the Week as she netted the game-winning goal at UT. Holland was also named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and was joined by junior Sarah Peters, who the league named as its Goalkeeper of the Week. Freshman defender Kate Dreyer also earned honorable mention status for TopDrawerSoccer’s Team of the Week.

After its 1-0 win against Big 12 preseason favorite Texas Tech on Sept. 25, again three Jayhawks earned weekly honors. Dreyer was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, while senior midfielder Kathryn Castro was listed on TopDrawerSoccer.com (TDS) National Team of the Week and Peters was a TDS Team of the Week Honorable Mention selection.

In just her second collegiate career contest, Dreyer anchored the Kansas defense to the shutout victory against the Red Raiders. The Tulsa, Oklahoma, native helped the Jayhawk defense limit Texas Tech to just nine shots, with four on target for the night.

Castro boomed a 30-yard goal that bolted into the upper left corner of the goal in the win against Texas Tech. The Plano, Texas, midfielder scored the lone goal of the contest in the 80th minute, her second career goal while at KU.

Peters recorded her second straight and 22nd career shutout in the win versus Texas Tech. The Lee’s Summit, Missouri, native tallied four saves in the victory.

LATE MATCH MAGICThe Jayhawks have been a clutch bunch over the last few seasons. All three goals of the 2020 campaign have come at the 60-minute mark or later. Dating back to the start of last season, Kansas has now netted 15 goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation or overtime, seven of which were game-winners. Two of those have come this season with senior Ceri Holland’s game winner at Texas (9/11) in the 81st minute and senior Kathryn Castro’s game winner versus Texas Tech (9/25) in the 80th minute.

EXPERIENCE VS. YOUTHThe 2020 edition of the Jayhawks are a youthful bunch, with 17 of the 28-woman roster boasting only one season of collegiate experience or less. There are eight true freshmen on the 2020 roster, who the coaches are leaning on to contribute immediately. Entering 2020, the squad features eight players who have seen action in 39 matches or more during their collegiate careers.

HOME SWEET HOMERock Chalk Park has been a welcome site for the Jayhawks in recent years as KU is enjoying a successful four-year stint playing on its home turf. The Jayhawks went 8-2-1 in Lawrence last season and are 38-16-3 (.693) in matches played at home during the regular season since the 2014 campaign. From 2013-14, Kansas also enjoyed an 11-match home winning streak, the longest in program history. Since moving into Rock Chalk Park, Kansas has built a goal differential of +44 and boasts a goals-against average of 0.90, a number that includes 22 shutouts.

KU PICKED SIXTH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON COACHES’ POLLKansas soccer was predicted to finish sixth in the 2020 league standings according to the Big 12 preseason coaches’ poll. The ranking marks the eighth time in the last nine years that KU has been picked sixth or higher in the conference’s preseason poll. Texas Tech is the preseason favorite for the first time in program history in the 2020 Big 12 soccer preseason poll, as voted by the league’s head coaches. The Red Raiders earned six first-place votes and 72 points while defending regular-season champion Oklahoma State is projected to finish second with three first-place votes and 70 points. TCU, the 2019 Big 12 Championship runner-up, earned third-place with 55 points, followed by West Virginia fourth (54) and Texas in fifth (50). Baylor earned a first-place vote and 38 points for seventh, while Oklahoma (31), Iowa State (16) and K-State (16) round out the poll.

LET’S GET DEFENSIVEThe Jayhawks are already carrying over their reputation as a stout defensive team this season after posting three shutouts to open the 2020 campaign. Last season, Kansas boasted a goals-against average of 0.77 last season, which encompassed 12 shutouts in its 25 outings. The Jayhawks allowed less than five opponent shots on goal per match in 2019.

With three shutouts in three contests this season, dating back to the 2019 season finale, KU has gone 284 minutes without allowing a goal. More impressively, Kansas has not allowed a goal against a Big 12 opponent since last season’s Big 12 Championship semifinal against Oklahoma State. It’s been 449 minutes since KU has allowed a goal against a Big 12 opponent.

KU also put together several impressive shutout streaks last season and finished it by building one of the longest in program history. The Jayhawks went 441 minutes between an opponent finding the back of their net from Nov. 8-24. The mark ranks as the fourth-longest streak in program history. KU has now tallied six opponent scoreless streaks of 300 minutes or more in the last five seasons.

SAVE IT, SARAH!Junior goalkeeper Sarah Peters is already off to a solid start to her third season in Lawrence coming off a stellar first two seasons as a collegiate goalkeeper. The Lee’s Summit, Missouri, native has started between the posts in all 49 of the Jayhawks’ matches over the last two-plus years and the numbers she has put up have her on pace to make a serious impact on the KU record books.

Peters has amassed a career goals-against average of 0.83, which currently has her as the all-time leader among Jayhawk keepers. She has conceded 42 opponent goals in 4,550 minutes in goal.

Peters has also tallied 23 career shutouts, which puts her five behind the program record of 28, held by Meghan Miller. Her win over Texas (9/11) also made her just the fourth KU keeper to tally 30 career wins. Currently sitting tied for third on the Kansas chart with 32 victories, she is 28 away from Miller, who holds the school’s goalkeeper wins record with 60.

FIRST TO SCORE, WINS GALOREDating back to the beginning of the 2012 season, now at 172 games, Kansas has developed an interesting trend when it comes to which team tallies the first goal of the match. During that 172-game span, the Jayhawks were on the losing end only four times in contests which they put in the match’s first goal. Kansas has amassed a record of 82-4-9 in those games (91.1 winning percentage), which included 14 of KU’s wins and one draw last season, as well as its three victories in 2020.

UP NEXTThe Jayhawks will return home to host Oklahoma State, Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m., at Rock Chalk Park. The match will be broadcast live via Big 12 Now on ESPN+. This will be soccer’s ‘Jayhawks for a Cure’ contest supporting breast cancer awareness month and 400 fans will be able to attend. Tickets will go on sale Friday, Oct. 9, via KUAthletics.com.

Oklahoma State holds a 13-10-4 all-time series advantage. KU is 7-2-2 against OSU in matches played in Lawrence, 1-1-1 at Rock Chalk Park which opened in 2014.

22nd SEASON AT KANSAS, 1999-PRESENT

Continuity is an essential part of a successful athletic program, and in his first 21 seasons at the helm of Kansas soccer, head coach Mark Francis has brought just that.

After taking over a program just past its infancy, Francis effectively etched his signature on Kansas soccer by becoming not only the winningest coach in its history, but leading his team to nine NCAA Tournaments, 17 Big 12 Championship Tournaments and helping 77 student-athletes garner all-conference accolades, including seven that went on to earn All-America status.

Since 1999, Francis has amassed a 239-168-37 record, with 15 seasons of at least 10 victories. He is ranked second among active Big 12 coaches in wins at a single school. He also leads the league among active coaches with his 92 career Big 12 victories.

Francis’ résumé is extensive, as he has coached and played at nearly all levels of the game. Francis worked his way up through the head coaching ranks wearing a whistle at the high school, junior college, Division I and professional levels. As a player, Francis was a three-time All-American at SMU and spent 10 seasons playing professionally in the APSL, the NPSL and the USISL.

After moving into its new, state-of-the-art facility at Rock Chalk Park in 2014, Francis’ program took another step forward, elevating itself as one of the top teams in the Big 12 and a perennial top-25 NCAA squad. Now as the tenants of one of the top soccer facilities in the U.S., Francis and his staff are attracting some of the top talent from across the globe to Lawrence and the results over the last five seasons can back up the progress being made. Francis saw his Jayhawk team take the program even further in 2018 as he coached Kansas to its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance and their fifth in the second round of the Big Dance.

Francis saw his Jayhawk team take the program even further in 2019 as he coached Kansas to its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance, its fourth in six years, and its second trip to the Round of 16 of the Big Dance. KU put together a program-record stretch of 11-straight unbeaten results en route to a 17-win season, which was highlighted by the Jayhawks claiming its first-ever Big 12 Tournament Championship in addition to the run to the Sweet 16. Senior forward Katie McClure became the seventh Jayhawk in program history to earn All-America status, claiming a spot on the third team after posting a Big 12-leading 17 goals. Senior Addisyn Merrick also closed her KU career on a high note as she was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the second Jayhawk in three seasons to earn the honor. Both McClure and Merrick heard their name calls in the NWSL Draft shortly after season’s end, marking the first time in program history that two Jayhawks were selected in a single draft.

It was a season to remember for Francis and the Jayhawks in 2014, as he led his squad to one of the best seasons in program history. He picked up his 200th career coaching victory in KU’s 4-1 win over Wake Forest and proceed to see his team reel off eight-straight wins to start the season, the best start in program history. His team ended the year with 15 victories, the third-most ever by a Jayhawk squad and made the program’s sixth NCAA tournament appearance. Junior Liana Salazar also had a breakout season in becoming Kansas’ sixth All-America honoree after she was named to the Third Team.

Francis tallied his 150th KU coaching victory in 2012 and led his squad to its 10th 10-win season during his tenure in Lawrence. Senior Whitney Berry became KU’s all-time assists leader (32) and the program’s 11th player to be named to the All-Big 12 First Team.

The 2008 season was one for the record books as Kansas recorded 13 wins and returned to the NCAA Tournament. The Jayhawks knocked off four nationally-ranked teams en route to their tournament berth, including a pair of wins over long-time nemesis Texas A&M. KU became the first team in three years to defeat the Aggies twice in the same season.

The Jayhawks topped four other ranked teams during the season and capped their remarkable run with a 2-1 triumph over Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Several players received accolades throughout and following the season. Freshman Emily Cressy was named a Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz as well as Soccer America, while teammates Monica Dolinsky and Johnson joined her on the All-Central Region Team. Dolinsky was also named All-Big 12 First Team, while Cressy became KU’s first Big 12 Rookie of the Year.

The 2004 season was a year filled with program firsts as numerous records were broken. The Jayhawks compiled a program-best record of 18-5 on their way to the Big 12 Championship. It was the first for the soccer team and second among KU women’s sports, the first going to basketball in 1997. Francis earned Big 12 Coach of the Year as well as the Central Region Coach of the Year honors. He also won his 100th overall match with a victory against Texas Tech on Oct. 1.

In 2003, Kansas soccer reached new heights under Francis’ leadership. The Jayhawks posted an 18-6-1 mark and advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament. With a 6-3-1 record in the Big 12, KU finished third. Along with the team accomplishments, several players were honored for their efforts during the 2003 campaign, including Caroline Smith being named to several All-America teams as well as Holly Gault being selected as a Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz. With Francis’ help, KU’s players etched their names in the record book, as Smith became the program’s all-time leader in goals, points and game-winning goals and Miller set the school mark in career shutouts and career GAA.

In 2002, Francis led Kansas to an overall record of 11-7-2, including a then-school record six-straight wins and a seven-game unbeaten streak during

MARKFRANCIS

the first half of the season. The Jayhawks opened the season 6-1-1, marking their best start ever. Francis’ team ranked in the Central Region’s Top 10 for 10 consecutive weeks.

In 2001, Francis guided the Jayhawks to a 13-7-0 overall record and a 7-3-0 Big 12 mark. For his efforts, Soccer Buzz named Francis the 2001 Central Region Coach of the Year, as he led his Jayhawks into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Kansas finished the season ranked sixth in the Central Region, marking the ninth-best turnaround in the nation, improving five games from the previous season.

A standout player in his own right, Francis is a 1987 graduate of Southern Methodist University where he was a three-time All-America selection for the Mustangs. As a senior, he was named SMU’s Male Athlete of the Year, the Dallas All-Sports Association College Athlete of the Year and was selected to Soccer America’s All-College MVP Team. In addition, he was a two-time nominee for the Hermann Trophy, given to the nation’s most outstanding soccer player.

Professionally, Francis played 10 seasons as a member of the Dayton Dynamos (NPSL), Mobile Revelers, Dallas Rockets (USISL) and the Orlando Lions (APSL).

After being hired at South Alabama just a few weeks prior to the start of the 1996 season, Francis inherited a depleted roster and finished his first season with a 2-17 record. The following year, he led the Jaguars to an 18-3-1 mark, including an unbeaten regular season in Big South Conference play. The 16-win turnaround is still the biggest in NCAA Division I soccer history.

A native of London, England, Francis resides in Lawrence and has three children: Carlin (27), Hayley (25) and Caleb (23).
